Vitor Belfort: Fighting Randy Couture for a fourth time is 'not a bad idea'

Props: Tatame.com
Quoteworthy:
"That’s not a bad idea. Whatever has to happen, will happen … If Dana White and the fans want it, what can I do? I’ll fight (Couture) and try to invert the score. How do I think it’d be? Just put us there, my friend … That’s how we see the things."
Newly re-signed UFC star Vitor Belfort contemplates a future match against one-time arch nemesis Randy Couture. The two met three times inside the Octagon starting all the way back at UFC 15 in 1997 and "The Natural" is ahead on the scorecards 2-1. Since they last met at UFC 49, both Couture and "The Phenom" have juggled weight classes with mixed results. Anyone want to see them hook 'em up one last time as Captain America nears the end of his career? Or was the third time the charm? Opinions please.

I think Vitor needs to stay at 185 after the Franklin fight; he’s had a lot of success at MW and not so much at LHW.

And it’s 2-0, Randy imo; the TKO on a cut like 40 seconds into rd 1 shoulda been a no contest; I don’t see how they ruled that a win for Belfort.

Nor me. I remember them introducing Belfort at Cage Rage as being “a former UFC Champion”, I was thinking technically yes but not really. I wouldn’t ever claim to be a champion if I won on a technicality like that.

he won a ufc tournement that makes him a champ too.

because thems the breaks O Damn.
Like you I have no interest in a 4th with Vitor/Couture.
Vitor better stay at 185 because we want to see him
take a crack at Anderson if he gets by Rich. I’d love to see Vitor vs Nate or Hendo as well. I’d also like to see him completely destroy Belcher and Okami
I haven’t heard or looked myself… is Rich/Vitor at 185?

agreed, o damn!~
vitor needs to stay at 185. imo- he shouldn’t even be fighting in a catch weight next.
randy owns vitor mentally. imo- the fights with randy is what put belfort on the decline for a couple yrs..
vitor training with randy is what brought the phenom back..
he should definitely stay at mw, and randy should stay heavy!~

agreed stink, good assessment on vitor’s fall and rise again. i think couture had a lot to do with his mental state on both occasions also

Randy owned Vitor on both occasions minus the cut eye incident which doesn’t or shouldn’t count as a win for Vitor….having Randy fight Vitor AGAIN, would be like having Chuck fight Tito again….doesn’t make sense for Randy or Chuck to fight someone they beat twice convincingly IMO…
by Chadx23 on Sep 4, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think if Chuck wants to fight again after his stint on DWTS they should feed him Tito so he can go out with a big KO. That maybe what is really behind Dana bringing him back.

I wouldn’t mind it if he loses to Franklin, but if he wins he will be moving in a different direction. I think the first fight was the best. The second was unfortunate, and the third he didn’t really look like himself. Didn’t seem like he trained right for it or was motivated for it. One thing about a Couture Belfort match is that it won’t be a snoozefest!!

Randy will never win another fight again. Trust me, I’m a doctor!

Vitor at middleweight makes sense. Would love to see him battle Silva.
But watching him fight Randy does nothing for me.
Maybe against Dana White in a boxing match.

Thedoctor,
Your not a shrink though are you? So I dont think a Proctologist has any clue about why or how randy would win or lose. I think you’ve been sniffin too much ass. And no I dont want you to check my prostate so stop asking!

If Belfort wins, he should challenge the loser of Hendo/Nate, for a run at 185. If he loses, fight Wand. Just stay at MW.

I know Randy would school Vitor again, but i’m all for it. The 3rd Couture-Belfort fight is one of my all time favorites. Coming right after that weak fluke of a win, that saw Vitor win the 205lb strap by cutting randy’s eyelid with his glove within the 1st minute. Randy came out with something to prove and he gave Vitor a man sized beating in which, if my memory serves me well, Vitor couldn’t answer the bell for the 4th round. It was classic Couture, along with Couture-Ortiz, Couture-Lidell 1,and Couture-Rizzo 1. Those are the matches of Legend.

Didn’t Belfort say that he didn’t even want to face Silva?
by Crackbaby on Sep 4, 2009 11:32 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
he would prefer not to but he would if approached. They need more middleweight contenders

This fourth match-up would stink. It’s just not a fight that people want to see. With all do respect VITOR, YOU NEED TO PROVE YOURSELF BEFORE GETTING A SHOT AT RANDY

Vitor maybe did get lucky in there 2nd fight, bt he through the punch and cut randy causing the bout to be stopped, it wasnt like it ws a clash of heads which caused the cut, it ws a punch
by horndog on Sep 4, 2009 12:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah, i would agree if it was his fist that hit randys eye, but it wasn’t..
the punch vitor through didn’t even hit randy. the seam of the glove graised his eyeball..

I’m like alot of you on here. I’m not interested in seeing Randy fight Vitor again. Randy only has what, 5 or 6 fights remaining on his new contract. I don’t want to see them wasted on someone he has already fought. He destroyed Vitor, it wasn’t even close. Besides, Vitor needs to stay at 185 anyway. He stands a much better chance there, not at lhw. I say give Randy a good match at 205 and if he wins, then we want to see interesting matches and him against Machida or the Spider interests me.
by brandon childers on Sep 4, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree Brandon. I’d like to see him fight Wandy at 205 for his first fight back at 205. It’s a fight we all have been wanting to see for years even though it’s not exciting now as it would have been a few years ago. If Randy wins, then lets give him Machida, or The Spider in a 205 lb. super fight.

I agree Brandon. I’d like to see him fight Wandy first at 205. I know it’s way overdue and not as exciting as it would have been a few years ago, but it still needs to happen and I think this would be a good first fight for Randy back at 205.

Franklin sucks??? Are you nuts?!? In 30 fights Rich’s only losses have been to Anderson, Machida, and Hendo. For those counting, that’s 2 current world champions (and P4P best) and a narrow decision loss against a legendary 2 division PRIDE Champion. Sheesh! Cut him some slack.

A lot of you guys are definitely on some form of medication because if you think Randy can mix it with anyone in the LW division then you need to come and see me, Everyone goes on how a great strategic he is, but to the Doc, he’s very one dimensional, bobbing and weaving like a boxer with no knockout power, and if that don’t work he’ll try and take you down, and even there I don’t think he has the power that he once had, look how easy Nog mounted him – come on?!
Here’s my 5 a day…
Randy v Rampage (Rampage knock out)
Vera, too fast, win by leg kicks.
Machida – forget it!
T,Silva, too hungry,good allrounder, knockout.
Evans, too strong.
As for heavyweight, forget it,he’s way too small.
Remember boys to keep taking those tablets.
by Thedoctor on Sep 4, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Randy would destroy Vera and would have a very good shot against Evans or Thiago. And I think if anybody can beat Machida, sylistically speaking, it’s Randy. He’s got the best takedowns of anybody that size and would give Machida huge problems on the ground or against the wall if he’s able to close the distance. (Admittedly that’s a big “if” but Randy’s got a better chance than anybody else.) But what I really wanna see is Randy welcoming Tito back to the Octogon with another spanking.

if this fight ever happens which it wont it will be on the same card as hughes/gsp 4, liddel/ortiz 3, jacksons/silva 4, and arlovski/sylvia 4.
I cant wait

Vitor vs Couture makes no sense….people don´t wan´t see this fight. Let´s feed Belfort with a rematch with Wanderlei Silva. would be great if the fight happens in Brazil …

anyone feeling a Liddell/Couture 4? It couldn’t be bad for either one.

randy has always been sooooo overrated.

It’s not a bad fight, but I want to see Vitor compete at 185. If he beats Franklin he is in the title hunt from the get go. Also I think it’s hurting the UFCs middleweight division that so many of their top contenders (well Henderson and Franklin at least) as well as their champion seems determined to compete at 205. Don’t get me wrong, I see why Franklin did it allthough it seems a little pointless if ANderson to goes to 205, but the whole middleweight division seems to be playing matchmaker theese days (Except Nate) with Henderson saying he will not fight Nate and Anderson not wanting to fight Henderson again before he potentially beat Marquart. I like seeing Silva at 205 but his first priority needs to be defending his belt. What ever happened to champions not picking there opponents.
by Paul on Sep 5, 2009 6:38 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Amen, Paul!
The reason all the MW are moving to LH is that the top 3 guys at 185 (Franklin, Hendo, Marquart) MW have already lost decisively to the Spider. Franklin already had his rematch so it makes sense for him to go to another division rather than play gatekeeper at 185. But that’s no excuse for Silva to deny Hendo or Marquardt a second shot.
Vitor adds much needed fresh blood to the MW ranks, as will Wandy, and though I don’t think either of them will beat Anderson, they will make for some interesting fights and keep the division from going stale again soon.

Now that’d be a rapid-fire barn burner!

BTW, this is a little off-topic, but for some inconceivable reason Randy continues to lie about his height and claim to be 6’2" I have met him, talked with him, shaken his hand (which was huge) and taken a photo with him. I’m just a hair under 6 feet and Randy is a good inch or so shorter than me. Maybe he was 6’2" in High School and all that wrestling has caused spinal compression like old people get. I dunno, but I can promise you he’s not 6’2" and it’s obvious in all his staredowns.
