Paul 'Semtex' Daley vs Martin Kampmann for UFC 103 booked with Mike Swick hurt

A concussion suffered during training on Sept. 3 has forced UFC welterweight Mike Swick to withdraw from his UFC 103 fight against fellow 170-pound contender Martin Kampmann at the "Belfort vs. Franklin" event in Dallas, Texas.
MMAmania.com has confirmed with Swick's camp that the former Ultimate Fighter contestant has indeed been pulled from the line-up following his head injury.
The news was first reported by The Sun , who also pegs Affliction transplant Paul "Semtex" Daley as the last-minute replacement for "Quick" opposite "The Hitman" on Sept. 19.
The Nottingham, England, native was to make his Octagon debut against fellow promotional newcomer Brian Foster after recently inking a four-fight deal with the UFC in late July following the collapse of Affliction MMA.
The status of Foster for UFC 103 is unknown at this time.
Daley is currently enjoying back-to-back wins after dropping two out of three to Nick "The Goat" Thompson and Jake Shields prior to that. He most recently put his stamp on Junior Barata, needing less than three minutes to take care of business.
The hard-hitting Brit will look to do the same against Kampmann; however, he may not get the chance if he can’t stay upright.
The 26-year-old slugger boasts 16 (technical) knockout wins in 21 career bouts (more than 75 percent). However, he is often criticized for his ground game, or lack thereof, for which he apparently makes no excuses (he has lost five times via submission in his eight career losses).
The crafty "Hitman" does have five submission wins to his credit, including a memorable arm-triangle choke over Drew McFedries at UFC 68 in March 2007.
Kampmann last competed at UFC Fight Night 18: "Condit vs. Kampmann," spoiling the Octagon debut of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Welterweight Champion and top-ranked 170-pound fighter Carlos Condit.
He defeated Alexandre Barros via second round technical knockout at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" in his 170-pound debut earlier this year.
This will mark the third time that Kampmann competes at 170 pounds after getting booted from the middleweight division by Nate Marquardt at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" back in September 2008.
And if he is able to perform well like he did on April 1, he'll likely face Georges St. Pierre for the division crown in early 2010.
UFC 103 will feature a main event between Rich "Ace" Franklin and Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort at a 195-pound catchweight. Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE superstar Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos.

Phuck Rampage. Can’t stand that guy any more. How can you take him seriously?

Swick musta got KTFO then, no bueno when you’re getting your @ss kicked that bad in training. Someone either needs to tone it down a notch or it’s just a bad sign for Swicks longevity.

Going into what would most likely have been a stand-up fight with a recent concussion is never a good idea.
If Kos or Fitch is to blame, maybe this will piss Swick off enough to actually fight one of them!

lol McArthur, I hope that was mean to be a joke… Religitimize the strongest LHW division of any organization ever to exist? Had to be a joke.

that was a joke but not the part about not taking Rampage seriously
by McArthur on Sep 4, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I actually don’t think the LHW division is as deep as everyone makes it out to be. The top 10 aside from Machida are all a bunch of strikers who aren’t even that great or technical. This is a division where Keith Jardine was considered top 10 for a great span of time and where Forrest Griffin used to be champ.
by frosnt on Sep 4, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions
He calls Machida “La Cheetah” and then says that he was embarrassed for Forrest after the Silva fight and didn’t even want a rematch after watching it. Rampage is the embarrassment. Dana must be livid right now.

Hey Mac, check out the Fedor/Rogers thread for my tirade, erm, thoughts, on the matter.

by Jeremyjackson on Sep 4, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually in my opinion Rampage won the fight against Griffin and Griffin/Rashad should never have been champs in the first place.
Rampage is deservingly the #2 LHW in the world, and will stay there for a long time, because noone will beat him except maybe Machida when he finally gets his titleshot.
Rashad will look like a fool against Rampage. He will not even last as long as against Machida. Him and Forrest are nothing, and never were more than just a bunch of UFC-overhyped tv show contenders.

would not surprise me if the ATeam producers convinced him to hold off for 2 reasons
1. So that they did not lose money with delays
2. A Page loss would have def hurt the movie…Mr. T never loses a fight and 2 have Page lose one could possibly hurt sales…ie. maybe Shad should have been Mr. T

Semtex for the Upset! Kampman wont be able to take him down and get battered!
by john G on Sep 4, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I honestly think the problem with the UFC is how it is scored.
It amazes me that a guy doing 5 min of lay and pray can win a fight. If the fighter does no reasonable damage then call that an even round, or consider it neutral. You should not get points either for punching once and running like Kenny Florian does.
It blows my mind that they gave Kenny round 2 against BJ. Kenny just holds him against the wall and lands an occassional jab. A quick high school boxer may be able to steal a round from BJ using this strategy, although he wouldn’t hurt him for a second.
by JeremyJackscan on Sep 4, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I am with John here. That was why i mentioned in the Swick thread why my early pick was Semtex. I am not convinced about Martin’s TDs and standing while they’re both technical- Daley packs way more power. I also gotta say that his sub defense on the ground is definitely better than Drew McFedries for those drawing the comparison.
by NameNotRequired on Sep 4, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Come on guys, seriously?
Who has Daley beaten to show he can take out Kampmann? Kampmann was beating good UFC MIDDLEWEIGHTS while Daley fought cans in the UK. It’s one thing looking like Bruce Lee against cans, quite another trying that stuff on elite fighters. He lost to Nick Thompson not long ago. He would be better off cutting to 155. He is getting owned on the 19th.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 4, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
McFedries was absolutely killing Kampmann on the feet. That’s what leads me to believe it. If that fight didn’t go to the ground, he would have been KO’d easy. You saw how bad Nate mugged him. That fight was all power and pressure. If you don’t let up on him then you’ve the fight in the bag. Like i said, this fight is decided in the wrestling and i don’t Martin’s will cut it here.
by NameNotRequired on Sep 4, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions
OK, good logic NNR, but McFedries and Marquardt are HUGE compared to Daley, and Kampmann still came out on top in one of those fights. That’s the big flaw I see in that reasoning. Kampmann will be able to drag Daley to the ground whenever he wants, and I’m not even convinced he has to.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 4, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions
McFedries is one of the absolute best and most explosive standup fighters in the UFC! so no shame in losing a standup battle with him, if nobody took McFedries down his record would have been all victories except for the loss to Cote..
Drew is also alot bigger than Semtex is!
by RoBerto on Sep 4, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions
If Maia didn’t take anyone down he would have lost every fight in the UFC.. that is the worst logic ever..
by RoBerto on Sep 4, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Question then guys – who do you think has better takedowns out of John Alessio and Martin Kampmann? I can’t make up my mind. We saw Daley defend Alessio’s takedowns. I don’t bother with Martin’s takedown game against Condit coz Carlos can’t defend a shot to save his life. This is turning into wrestling math.
by NameNotRequired on Sep 4, 2009 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Alessio is easier to defend because he’s not very dangerous on his feet and you know it’s coming. Kampmann can mix in quick strikes and make things much more unpredictable.
Plus, like I said, Daley has power but Kampmann is a skilled enough kickboxer to use his reach and speed to negate that. I think he will do fine in the stand-up as well.
Do you think Daley would have beaten Condit as well?
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 4, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Ask yourself this – who is the better kickboxer? Kampmann or John Alessio?
Kampmann is tall for the weight class, he can drag him to the ground whenever he wants to, just like Jake Shields did..
by RoBerto on Sep 4, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Same thing with that fight, stylistically i think it favors Daley again even though Condit has shown a ton of grit in his fights. I don’t think condit could take him down and standing again both technical but Daley packs way more power. Maybe if he can outwork daley and gas him out but yea. Great comparison though! I don’t know maybe i am looking at their styles from too general a view. Got any insight on their wrestling styles that makes you think Martin or Condit could put him down?

Daley is much bigger and stronger then Martin. Semtex is instantly the 2nd best striker in the WW division behind Alves. He use dto fight at middleweight so Semtex is HUGE for a WW.
No doubt in my mind that Semtex will pull off the upset!
I hate watching Swick fight and I was pissed that Semtex wasnt going to be televised. Swick getting hurt and Semtex stepping up is a dream come true.

Definitely happens Mac, just found it, BA gives SZ two of his best hooks, no effect, then SZ staggers BA with an open palm strike and a kick then throws him over his shoulder BA style.

This a one of the best replacements i can recall… ever?
Its a real close one to have to call. Each fighter has reason to end this early. Kamp will want to stay out and jab/low kick and attempt the TD when he can. Semtex is looking to get close and throw down and he can wrestle. IMO I think Kamp can weather his storm and be patient enough to wait for the opening.
Seeing Semtex fight in Canada’s MFC I think Kamp is a big step up right now, as a first fight in a UFC arena.

Swick gets no respect from anybody on this site. His only loss was to Yushin Okami at middleweight where he almost came back to win that fight. Swick would kick either one of their asses and give GSP as good a fight as Fitch or Alves did. WAR SWICK!

I agree Adam T. , been a Swick fan for a long time. This absolutely sucks. I would have loved to see him and GSP fight. Truth be told, in the UFC Sak is a LW. The Zaromskis kid who just KO’d Sakurai and and Jason High with savage headkicks to win the Grand Prix is a big WW though, and damn fun to watch.
That said, I can’t see him doing much against the big, dominant wrestlers in the UFC WW division, who would take him down and pound him out.

Juice??? Maybe but maybe not…He handled Mack with ease and could make a statement at 170…WW’s who are 5’9, 5’10" don’t really need the juice as their cutting weight…roids help with injury recovery and aren’t really used by lighter weight class fighters as they ony add weight and make cutting more difficult…Zaromskis is good but its hard to say how he would fair in the UFC

Not going to name drop because A) I will sound like a dick and B) There is always a chance that he will come on here and I will sound like a double dick and C) I doubt he would appriciate me spreading this.
But I asked him a while back what is happening with Zaromskis as I like watching him fight.

but even if the swick/kampmann fight would have still happened it wouldnt really matter niether one of those guys are even close to being on gsp’s level ther is currently NO ONE at welterwieght in the UFC or any other organazation across the globe that can hang with st pierre.
the only choices for gsp are to either dominate ww and break the record for most title defenses and replace hughes as the most dominate ww in history or move up to mw and challenge himself there im not saying against silva because i think silva would kill him but challenge guys like belfort, henderson, maia, leites, all guys I think he could beat.

"Rampage wants to be a movie star. I hope it’s not true (about Jackson getting the role). He’s up for it, and he talked to me, he wants to do this thing, and he’s like, ‘listen, man, this is really important to me…there’s some sentimental value here for me, me and my Dad grew up watching The A-Team together and we loved it.’

He’s not sitting around thinking about him and his mom used to watch the (expletive) ‘Love Boat’ together, and he wants to get the role of ‘Isaac the Bartender’…you know what I mean? Get a (expletive) grip, dude. You’re going to make a lot of money. You ain’t gonna make a lot of money playing B.A. Baracus on the A-Team. Jesus Christ. (Expletive) drives me (expletive) nuts."

riiight
I guess we like to forget UFC 92 which did more than 91: Couture vs. Lesnar with a total of 1.25 mil.
Rampage has always been a huge draw for the UFC and a guy that has stepped up when they needed him to. He fought Henderson in the UK on UFC 75 on just the 2nd ever PPV in the UK when he gets a % of profits. He fought Jardine in March when the UFC called and asked in desperate need of a main event.
He’s easily one of their top 3 draws. All you haters can suck it.
None of this is even confirmed anyways.

Daley is overated and doesn’t stand much of a chance against Kampman. Looks like GSP will defend against Martin on the News years eve card in January. Now that the Rampage card is scrapped, this looks like the Main Event for the Superbowl Card will be him vs Rashad. I have a gut feeling Randy will fight Anderson on this card also.

Off topic but the fight night for September is about as good a fight night card as the UFC has ever put on from top to bottom. Awesome fights.

wow. HUGE break for daley. Even if he doesnt win itll bring his name to the fore front. I see Kampmann taking this pretty easily. But then again. Its mma and daley is legitemate. Not top 10 or anything. But legit.
Sucks for swick. They should make him fight Karo next. Or idk someone. Since most of the top 10 guys in the ww division wont even fight each other.

SCREW THIS BULLSHIT FIGHT!! They should have replaced Swick with WHO??? ANTHONY JOHNSON!!! I would be much more excited to have seen that.
by UFC LOVA on Sep 4, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, AJ is ready for a top opponent. After all, he does hold victories over Tommy Speer, Kevin Burns AND Luigi Fioravanti.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 4, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions
that would be sweet! ’cause right now, AJ is fighting on the worst PPV card in years..
by RoBerto on Sep 4, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions
At least 104 has an epic main revent. UFC 96 was a crap PPV. Rampage/Jardine? Please.

I know, chill bro. lol, forgot about that card.

Anthony Johnson is being protected, he’s showed real promise in his early fights, but is being fed cans of spam.
by Oskarbravo on Sep 4, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions
It was Koscheck’s fault! I knew it… That fu*king guy. Maybe now Swick will actually want to fight him to get his title shot. Sounds like a pretty easy fight for the UFC to sell to the fans.

Kampmann is going to sleep in this fight. Mark my words
by vinrex7 on Sep 4, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions
I marked them with red ink as they are probably incorrect…2 out of 10 times Kamp gets clipped and loses…

the injry bug is out in full force, reportedly Anderson Silva got hurt and will be out several months! I call bullshit! I feel its a ploy from his and his management team to force Nate and Hendo to fight…..its jsut to coincidental considering the fact that Anderson wasnt to keen on fighting hendo again and his mangagement’s requests to have Hendo and Nate fight to determine #1 contendership!!!

I would love to see Daley take this, (just to f**k up the whole WW Titleshot picture) I hate predictable fight scenario’s.
by Oskarbravo on Sep 4, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions
Good replacement for Swick. Have to agree with the majority. Neither Swick, Kampman, or Daley have a chance against GSP.
by jTp on Sep 4, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions
If Swick is getting KO’d by Koscheck in training he’s got no chance against GSP in a tile fight. I still remember him bitching in Season 1 of TUF, give up the ghost and go home.

With so much drama in the UFC its kinda hard being d. Whitee, but he somehow someway keeps coming up with fights like every single day
by Daniel worby on Sep 4, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions
But in all honesty, ya semtex can bang, but I see maynards wrestling being the big key to this, as he muscles Daley down and isn’t able to get back up.
Rampage? Ur not funny anymore, u dish out jokes that insult others, but when they do it back you complain. U couldn’t finish jardine. Now ur cancelling on the fight that u built and hyped like the 2nd coming of Christ?
Class act buddy. I’m a big fan but of what now? Ur not who ya used to be. I wouldn’t even mind if Evans smashes ya now. Teach u to grow up.
Go hump a reporter for an awkward long period of time ya 4 year old

Rumble should have been in there. Scrap his fight. Would be much more entertaining.
I don’t see winner getting GSP now regardless of if its Maynard.
But who? Hardy? Davis? Their marketability is alright but undeserved and they only fight in uk lol.
So what? Move GSP to mw to test the waters til this is resolved? No spider obviously, but maybe maia? Belfort? Wandy?
That may sound dumb, but I’m just throwing out ideas, as I don’t see kampmann/daley winner (still should be Maynard who wins), earning the shot off the vitory.
by Daniel worby on Sep 4, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions
Maynard is a LW and Hardy just beat Davis so why would Davis get a contenders fight? Where does Maynard come into this story ever?
by jay on Sep 5, 2009 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Fuck me I’m embarrassed. Where the hell was Maynard coming from? Why was I thinking that. Lol I even still have semtex/kampmann in part of the post.
What the fuck was that? How the hell did I do that? Ugh forgive me guys. My body went numb from embarrassment when I saw that i’d put that.
Must of had the bully on the brain from a previous thread.
Fuck me

Fitch should of took this fight! then Fitch and GSP could Fight In the Big Show that Rampage bowed out of !!! cause honestly, there could a 100 different number one contender fights in the world ….. but second to GSP is Jon Fitch …. If you argue that fact ….. Grow Up! ahah
by Josh on Sep 5, 2009 8:24 AM EDT reply actions
BJ vs Diego is booked to replace Rampage.
Everyone knows Fitch is number two. GSP vs Fitch1 was one of the most boring one sided beatdowns in living memory. The UFC certainly wont rush to book a rematch between those two and certainly not as a headline bout, as the marketing dept wouldn’t be able to convince anybody the fight would be competitive.
by attakdog on Sep 5, 2009 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions
thanks tips …… listen
Alves broke, GSP broke his will and broke his heart by the third round, Alves realized he has no chance to win, so far, Fitch is the only one to Continue to push the pace and keep moving forward against GSP, Although it was one side, Boring? what are you kidding me, it was a crazy fight, Fitch wouldnt Die! ahah
Im not bashing you attakdog, im just saying, I think Fitch would put a much better fight up then the first fight, and if it gets over with sooner than later, it would give Fitch (if he loses) a chance to move up to 185, where I think he could do real well!
by Josh on Sep 5, 2009 9:39 AM EDT reply actions
I like Fitch a lot and he may well put up a better fight next time but would anyone pay to watch it???? The first fight was just so one sided nobody would buy it that fitch had any chance whatsoever. The only chance that fight ever has is as being a co main event on an end of year show or super bowl show, much like GSP/Alves was second to Brock vs Mir @ 100, as it just wouldn’t do the numbers by itself.
Not sure about Fitch moving up to MW, its rare you get a fighter move up in weight to further a career, they normally do the opposite and go down. If AS’s still knocking around he’d never get a title at MW either.
