Matt Hughes signs multi-fight UFC contract

Looks like former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (43-7) -- much like fellow elder statesmen Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture -- has just signed a multi-fight UFC contract that will likely insure he finishes his career inside the Octagon before hanging up the gloves once and for all.
Following his unanimous decision win over Matt Serra at UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida," the future Hall of Famer revealed his desire to continue fighting, however it’s still unclear at this time where the 35-year-old veteran fits in the grand scheme of things.
From Hughes' official blog :
"Last week I went out to Vegas and I signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC, which is much like my last contract. I also brought up the fact that I wanted to do a hunting show and they thought that would be a good thing. They still have to find out who, where and when my next fight will be and I will try to post that info ASAP. Nothing is decided yet, so anything you might be reading on the internet right now is just rumors and speculation. However, one name the UFC did bring up is a person I’ve never fought before."
While it may still be too early to speculate when and where Hughes will make his first appearance, it's not unfair to wonder if his old school smothering "ground and pound" approach to competition is going to cut it against younger, faster and more versatile talents such as Carlos Condit, Martin Kampmann and Mike Swick, among others.
No question Mr. Country Breakfast has an irrefutable legacy inside the Octagon, but he's a mediocre 3-3 since manhandling Royce Gracie at UFC 60: "Hughes vs. Gracie" way back in May of 2006.
Hughes may not be on the verge of another title run, but it will be interesting to see if this old dog can learn some new tricks and keep up with the new generation of mixed martial arts competitors. Perhaps the H.I.T. Squad founder still has a few tricks up his sleeve?
Time will tell.

You got that right; I guess if he’s still got the fire, he shouldn’t give up, but the only entertaining fights of his in recent memory were his beatdowns courtesy of GSP and his fight with Serra. And Serra was the reason that fight was entertaining, cause all Hughes was interested in doing was dry humping him.
by O damn he got caught on Sep 3, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Dunno about that, the only thing Serra seems to be good at is punching people in the back of the head. Thats how he caught Hughes and GSP in the beginning of their fights.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 3, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I seem to recall Serra and Hughes butting heads early in that fight, which caused Hughes to collapse. I was drunk though, so my memory could be fuzzy.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 3, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea but it’s not like he’s doing that on purpose, he’s swinging at their dome, where the fist lands isn’t entirely his fault when their movin around anyway. But throughout the fight, overall, Serra was workin the jits, he was swingin for the fences, he was tryin to make something happen. Just didn’t seem like Hughes was tryin to win that one, he was just holdin on for dear life.

I know but I’m a Hughes fan and I always come down hard on Serra. Just kinda lame how much crap he gets for losing to GSP and Thiago, to be honest Hughes was never dominate. If you go back and look at his fights he a lot of times was losing the fight and pulled off a great win, thats what I always look forward to. Him getting the crap kicked out of him but still sticking in there until the bitter end, I have never seen Hughes quit in the middle of a fight.

I’ll give you that, I don’t like the guy but his fight with Trigg was pretty awesome. I also noted that Penn in the 2nd fight and GSP in his 1st fight were both beating Hughes down and he came back. Just doesn’t seem like he’s the same guy anymore, or maybe the game has just moved too far past him.
by O damn he got caught on Sep 3, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I really believe he has BJ syndrome. So much of his dominance was just natural talent and farmboy strength. Sure he trains, but he is not as explosive and hungry as these young up-and-comers.
by wAyNe on Sep 3, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
lol, Wayne you’re so wrong… Hughes trains like every top fighters trains.
by Alpha Male on Sep 3, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I would say yes and no. yes he trains hard and gets strong and adds great cardio. No, however because he doesnt train smart enough to compete with truly multi-dimensional fighters. Hughes is way to one dimensional and has never really worked to improve his stand-up by bringing in quality coaches. His downfall is that he relies to much on his ground game and makes it easy for fighters to formulate game plans when perparing to fight him. The greats like Anderson are hard to prepare for becasue they can fight effectively everywhere and please no on say Silva is bad on the ground. His ground game isnt as good as his tand-up becasue his stand-up is insane, his ground game is just very good. Having said all that, Hughes will only be a gatekeeper from here on out…..at best. I can’t see im ever being a main event, except if the fighter he is fighting is a bigger name that can draw.

Cantrim, don’t worry, I never said once that Anderson wasn’t well rounded. For Hughes though, you can’t say that “he never really worked to improve his stand-up by bringing in quality coaches.” I don’t know who was the striking coach at Miletich, like I don’t know who’s the one at HIT squad, but Until 3 years ago the Miletich camp was one of the best camp with great strikers (Jens, Drew, Robbie). I agree though, that he’s still a one dimensional wrestler, but he sure did, always had top fighters around him.
by Alpha Male on Sep 3, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Alpha, so does BJ. All these guys pretty much train the same. I’m referring more to the heart, drive, intensity, killer instinct. Whatever you want to call it. Also two guys can go through the same camp and one will come out more improved. Just because he does the same routine as other top guys doesn’t mean he does it with as much intent. He’s just going through the motions. Still working on the farm. Not adjusting his style. I stand by my statement. I don’t think he’s as focused and dedicated on fighting and improving as the younger contenders. Maybe I’m wrong. Glad I gave you a chuckle though.
by wAyNe on Sep 3, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Wayne, I don’t agree with your “BJ syndrome”. BJ wasn’t training at all. He was maybe training 2hrs/day, that’s it. THe best guys that he had in his gym are… Grove, McCully and Lauzon. Nothing to compared with Hughes. Yeah, he doesn’t seems to improve his stand-up but you can’t have the right to say that, this guy doesn’t have the heart, drive, intensity like the youngsters have.
by Alpha Male on Sep 3, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions
If he tried to work on his stand-up through is career then something was really wrong. I say that becasue his stand-up is brutal. His technique and power are almost laughable. Thats the reason why I say he didn’t properly work on his stand-up, becasue it has always sucked. The old excuse that they are wrestlers and new to the stand-up game doesnt hold water anymore becasue there are a ton of wrestlers entering the UFC who are becoming very good stand-up fighers with the proper dedication and training, Matt Hughes..not one of those guys. I think maybe he just paid lip service to training on his stand-up, but it didn’t ever show.
by Cantrim on Sep 3, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
THe problem with HUghes is that he never trains with anyone better then him. Who is his best training partner? Lawler? How can he compete with the best, when the best (gSP) is training with top middle and light heavyweights?
I also think he is lazy. Maybe not azy, but just too damn cocky to work hard. He admitted that he came into his title fight against newton only training the week of the fight cause he was too busy on the farm…NOt the epitomy of hard work if you ask me!
I really have no desire of ever seeing him fight again. I used to be a big fan, but I cant respect a guy that has been in the game forever, and stil cant throw a decent punch…why do you think I hate Tito? I wont accuse Hughes of being a lay n pray guy, cause I always appreciated that as a dominant wrestler, he implemented his ju jitsu…but those days are over! IM getting Fed up with the UFC signing all these big named washed up fighters like hughes, coleman, Baroni….

Anyways, you’re wrong john. Timmeh, Jens, Lawler all are former champs and were champs during their time at Miletich while Matt was there. You can’t say that he never trains with anyone better then him. You know better than that.
by Alpha Male on Sep 4, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions
No doubt everyone just hates these days. As I stated before and a few of you understood, Hughes has never been a dominate fighter. Please go back and look at his tapes, he’s always shown weak stand up game. He’s flat footed people, thats why we say its hard for a wrestler to learn striking. GSP has never been a wrestler so for you to use him is completely apples to oranges. I realize he’s bitter about his losses but the guy never backs down from a challenge, when Serra pulled out due to being a sally Hughes asked for GSP, where he got severly man handled. He wasn’t afraid to go for a second time against Penn, and though he could have tapped to Penn earlier he never did and held out for the win. The man is a cardio machine who takes serious punishment. There are not many fighters who can take the damage he took against GSP in their second fight. Hughes will always be on the main card because he is better than just a gatekeeper. I still believe he has it in him to beat top opponents, I just don’t think he can handle strikers on the level of GSP or Thiago. Try Kos and I bet we’ll be suprised by who wins.

Give him Condit after Condit wins his fight at Fight Night 19. That will give Hughes a great test, AND if Condit wins (which he will) it will propel him into the top-5 of the welterweight division with a win over a big name. The UFC needs new contenders at 170.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 3, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
No doubt about that. Doesn’t Maia look like he could make 170? GSP will put him right where he wants to be.
by BNF on Sep 3, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, Maia looks like he could make 170. I’d say GSP would be much more likely to pick Maia apart on his feet. GSP always has great gameplans, and GSP is a terrific kickboxer. Good gameplans involve taking a guy out of his comfort zone, and I’m sure that’s what Jackson and co would want him to do.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 3, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Maia should definately see if he can make 170. He looked about half the size Nate was in his last fight. I wish we could have seen a round or so to judge what kind of fight it would have been if he wasn’t laid out right away, but he still looked awfully small.
by naturalshadow on Sep 3, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea but Georges likes to use his wrestling a lot now a days; and A. Silva’s got the better stand up of the two. If Maia were gonna roll the dice against one of them I’d say go for GSP. There’s a possibility that Georges takes the fight to the ground where Maia could work jits, and his stand up isn’t as dangerous as Silva’s. I’m almost 100% sure on that one that Maia never gets Georges to the ground though unless GSP decides the fight goes there. Might be screwed either way.
by O damn he got caught on Sep 3, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Your are probably right, but I would still want to see it over, Swick/Kampmann or Condit. It just seems like all those fights are “busy work” for GSP. Seriously, what is he going to do after the next fight. Dana won’t let him fight Anderson, so who is he going to fight?
by BNF on Sep 3, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the jump to 185 is inevitable; he’s going to be in A. Silva’s shoes pretty soon. The division is just about cleared out (if not already) of interesting fights for Georges and he’ll have to move up to 185 just for the sake of competition. I agree with Georges though, if he’s going to go up to 185, give him the 6-8 month lay off to build his body up.
by O damn he got caught on Sep 3, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
lol, calm down with those GSP/Maia talks. GSP would KO Maia just like Nate did. GSP is a strong guy. He knock down Hugues, Fitch, Thiago, all tough guys.Maia would be KO right at the stares down.
by Alpha Male on Sep 3, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
One thing I haven’t heard discussed is that bulking up like that requires doing less cardio. It’s hard to pack on 10 pounds of pure, lean muscle if you’re training four hours a day. Georges would have to bulk up and then he’d need time to get his conditioning back up, which is such a huge part of his game.
Anderson Silva has a frame well-suited to 205. At 6’2, all he needs to do to make 205 is not diet like he does to make 185, where he is very skinny. Bulked-up or not, GSP will be one of the smaller middleweights in the UFC at 5’10. I don’t like it.
GSP can have a few fights at 185, but he belongs at 170 and that’s where he should stay. If he’s so damn good nobody beats him, that’s the rest of the division’s problem,, not his. It’s like guys want to penalize him for his excellence by forcing him into a division where he doesn’t physically belong. New threats will emerge in his division, and Georges has the chance to set new standards for wins and consecutive title defences. Why the hell can’t he do that without the haters demanding he move up and fight guys that are way bigger than him?
I still find it entertaining watching greatness dominate, even if it’s one-sided at times. Tiger Woods is fun to watch. The ’80’s Oilers were fun to watch. the Patriots a couple years ago were fun to watch. Brazil at the World Cup is fun to watch. Just because Tiger Woods is a way better golfer than anyone else in the world, should he have to start with a five-stroke handicap to make the tournaments closer, and therefore more exciting? Of course not, the suggestion is preposterous. So is demanding that GSP fight at a weight class where he steps into the cage for every fight at a clear disadvantage.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 3, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed w/ Alpha. GSP would KO Maia with some sweet looking strikes. And his TD defense would give Maia fits.
Maia would have to propel himself like one of those facehuggers from the Alien movie at about 60 mph and attach himself to GSP’s neck…
Then, I might give him a shot…
by OJR on Sep 3, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Because Swick has no chance. He has very fast hands, but it is highly unlikey he will give GSP the Goulet treatment and no chance of a Swickotine. Maia, on the other hand, strengths play right into what GSP likes to do best lately. He puts everybody on their back now. I have to believe at some point that fight goes to the ground and that is what I want to see. I haven’t totally given up on Maia because he got caught in 20 seconds by Nate. GSP doesn’t have Nate’s power BTW.
by BNF on Sep 3, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea but Georges is too smart and Maia’s striking is too deficient to really hurt GSP enough to absolutley have to take the fight to the ground. I think it’d be interesting if he just did like A. Silva does and takes a non title fight at 185 every now and again. They could match him up with the Bisping/Kang winner just to test the waters or maybe even Akiyama (Though Akiyama could realistically fight at 170 I guess).

That and I wanna see what Georges looks like next to a guy like Bisping or Kang or even Belcher, just to guage his strength at 185. If he’s going to lose on just size to A. Silva he may as well not even make a run at that division.

Fine. Mike Tyson was fun to watch?
I just don’t think GSP should have to move up in weight and fight guys bigger than him for our entertainment. It seems like the guys who are most adamant that he do this are also the guys who have expressed a dislike for GSP and a desire to see him get knocked out.
People talk about P4P, but most of them don’t even understand the definition. P4P implies that you are better at YOUR given weight than any other fighter is at THEIR given weight. Moving up and fighting the best guy in a weight class well above yours establishes nothing.
I’m sure he will fight at 185 sooner or later, and I’m not saying I don’t want to see it. I just think his focus should be on dominating his division and setting new UFC records. And if he never does fight at 185, anyone who criticizes him for it is an idiot.

Its like they have to get knocked out thrice in a row brutally to even consider it.
I don’t care if Hughes and Couture looks “okay” in the octagon they should just quit and keep their legacy intact AND their health.
Same goes for Shamrock, Frye, Coleman etc etc.

Everybody said the same thing about Nog 1 fight ago… Sometimes it works both ways.

Im tired of seeing Matt Hughes fight, he hasnt evolved enough of his game to still be a contender. Mix that with the most boring style in mma and u have a now mediocre fighter that is unbearable to watch. Atleast Militech and Ortiz have a style of inflicting real damage, even if they are “OLD TIMERS” so they’re fights are atleast entertaining. HUGHES PLEASE RETIRE you had your chance with the SERRA fight to come back with a bang but instead you chose to lay on him for the whole fight.

I don’t think losing twice to GSP makes you mediocre. Losing to the best ain’t no shame.

He didn’t just lose to him. He got dominated and finished Scooby Doo. Alves kicked his ass and then he barely eeks out a decision over Serra. There are a dozen welterweights in the UFC that will take Hughes out.

I would say seeing Trigg 3 or Alves if it was somebody he fought before. Maybe pair him up with Fitch or Kos.

I doubt he’ll have any new tricks up his sleeve. Unless there’s some new dry hump technique we don’t know about. Maybe he’s studying the ancient art of Kama Sutra.

Dana: Here’s the contract, Matt. Pretty standard.
Hughes: Sounds good. Did I mention that I was interested in doing a hunting show?
Dana: Yeah… 5 times. Good for you. Just sign the $#@%ing contract.

Dana shouldn’t be so hasty, what if it turns out that it’s not duck/deer hunting; but more like:
“Matt Hughes professional MILF HUNTER”

I think the updated version is Cougar Hunter.

I’m not ashamed to say I bagged a couple of fine cougars in my day. The messed-up thing now is, the chicks I used to look at as Cougs are my age!
Oh, the humanity…

I say welcome back Hughes! I just hope can find that fire and tenasity again. He hasnt been that exciting to watch the last couple years, but you can’t deny that what he’s done for MMA.

Agree with every word. We can enjoy the fights buddy.

Hughes hasn’t been old enough to blame his ass beatings to age. He heard all the criticisms of his one dimensional style. It was a DECISION he made to not travel to other camps, bring in varied trainers, etc. He has the physical gifts, he made the CHOICE to not develop them in the current MMA world

Matt Serra must have gotten a head shot on Hughes and rattled the dude’s brain. Who is he going to fight and be competitive with? GSP made him cry like alittle girl, and he was knocked out in vicious style recently.
Hughes is campaigning to be the next Shamrock
