UFC 106: Amir Sadollah vs Phil Baroni under consideration for Nov. 21

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 winner Amir Sadollah (1-1) is under consideration to welcome Phil Baroni (13-11) back into the Octagon in a welterweight clash planned for UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

Inside Fights was the first to float the possible 170-pound match up, and MMAmania.com has since been able to confirm that it is indeed under consideration. Bout agreements, however, have not been signed at this time.

Sadollah suffered a series of injury-related setbacks since a submission win over CB Dolloway at TUF 7 Finale. He was expected to follow up that performance against Nick Catone at UFC 91: "Lesnar vs. Couture" on November 15. However, just four days before fight night he had to withdraw because of a leg infection.

After more than a year on the sidelines, Sadollah finally got back into the cage at UFC 101 last month in his welterweight debut. Unfortunately his return was short lived after Johnny Hendricks put him down in the first round (with a little help from much-maligned referee Dan Miragliotta).

Now the likable and hard-working Sadollah will get a chance to erase those bad memories with a big win over potential opponent and master of self-promotion Phil Baroni.

Star-divide

"The New York Bad Ass" last appeared in St. Louis back in June of this year, dropping a unanimous decision to fellow MMA journeyman Joe "Diesel" Riggs. The loss marked his first defeat in four fights since rebounding from a three fight losing skid, as well as his first loss at 170 pounds.

The 33-year-old Pride FC, Elite XC and Strikeforce veteran recently agreed to return to where his career essentially began with the UFC, likely facilitated by his good relationship with company president, Dana White, and his colorful ability to promote fights.

Baroni competed eight times inside the Octagon between 2001 and 2005, compiling a lackluster record (3-5) during that span. He fought Evan Tanner and Matt Lindland twice (four total fights) and lost all of those middleweight matches. Baroni is perhaps best known for being upset by up-and-comer Pete Sell thanks to a guillotine choke that put the Long Island, N.Y., native to sleep.

How he performs against the up-and-coming Sadollah on November 21 will say a lot about his future in the UFC -- and MMA overall.

UFC 106 will feature a main event heavyweight title bout between two absolute monsters as champion Brock Lesnar will look to defend his gold for the second time against his newest challenger, Shane Carwin. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz is also set to make his return to the Octagon against UFC Hall of Famer, Mark Coleman, after spending nearly a year and a half on the sidelines.

Phil wins, and Amir loses any chance at being relevant in MMA that he once had.

High probability of happening, OD.

Veeeerrry interesting.

yeah, the Forrest wannabe is gonna go to sleep..

by RoBerto on Sep 2, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

No way. Amir is too quick for Baroni. This is where Baroni loses all relevance. Amir looked good despite the long layoff in his last fight. He just got caught. He’s also got a much better camp than Baroni.

by Mahde on Sep 2, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Looked good in his last fight?? How long did it last?

Let me guess, to you Tim Hague looked like the new HW #1 contender in his past match?

by ViolentMike on Sep 2, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

hahahaha vintage VM!

Personally, If I died never seeing Baroni fight again, I would die a happy man!

As for Amir, whats his pro record? 0-1? call me if he ever becomes relevant!

by John G on Sep 2, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

lmmfao nice 1 violentmike….and how did amir look good in that fight lol im laughin so hard right now

by JG on Sep 2, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

pro record of 1-1 Johnny G. CB tapped remember. like, what, 5 years ago at the TUF Finale?

by Synyster on Sep 2, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Just 2 put in perspective people thinking amir will get cut if he losses 1 more……the ufc has only droped 1 ultimate fighter winner and it was travis lutter ( missed weight for his title shot he won on the show)…sum ultimate fighter winners who have lost 2 in a row… kendell grove, matt serra, forrest griffen, nate diaz, mac danzig…and soon 2 be maybe rashad and bisping…..they will NOT cut him if he loses this fight, the guy just had over a year of rehab and they probly didnt exspect him to be a world beater in his first fight back

by JG on Sep 2, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed, veeeery interesting. Amir is gonna be sleepin’ with the fishes with Baroni’s heavy hands…

And doesn’t bAroni look like Luke Wilson in this pic or somethin’? hehehe!

by Syd on Sep 2, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Mac’s lost 3 in a row so has he been cut yet? I haven’t heard anything since the Jim Miller fight.

Don’t care about this fight in the slightest, Baroni is all talk and no talent while Amir doesn’t have the body for professional fighting and won’t do much in the UFC. Hopefully this will be a prelim.

by David W-S on Sep 2, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn it’s a convention of the old timers. Everyone is posting in this thread. Anyways, Sadollah doesn’t pack power standing and he can’t wrestle. Maybe Phil can get an assist from Murgly.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 2, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

(aka Thorazine) D. White I’m gonna’ curse your name if Baroni’s skanks rip off his 80’s jump suit exposing him in a speedo!

by DAVE A on Sep 3, 2009 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I know but he’s got that 6 figure contract…as far as I know all TUF winners have fulfilled their contract obligations but what if Amir loses? Can they just pay him out on the remainder of his contract and let him go??

by McArthur on Sep 2, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought the UFC reserves the right to exterminate a contract IF a fighter loses 2 straight.

by Synyster on Sep 2, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

didn’t know that but I like it AND it makes sense…the big show is reserved for the big dogs

by McArthur on Sep 2, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve heard that before too. 2 Losses and your on the market again.

Why is everyone ready to cut and run on Amir.

I think he’s talented and exciting to watch. He just lost a bad stoppage IMO to a wrecking ball in Hendricks

He does need to prove himself this next time out, but until then he’s training with great guys and he did win TUF which is more then Baloni has done recently.

by Big Zino on Sep 2, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

It should be based off win percentage if anything. If somebody goes 16-3 and happens to take 2 of those 3 in a row they’re cut? That’s bullshit.

by Bryan139 on Sep 2, 2009 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Sadollah is now officially 1-1. He drops this one, then what Mr. Math Fella?

by PW on Sep 2, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

The official rule of the 6 figure contract is that only the first year after winning the ultimate fighter is guaranteed. However, it’s been more than a year since Amir’s ultimate fighter win, so, he can be cut just like any other fighter. Which has a high probability of happening since the UFC isn’t known for marketing a fighter with more losses than wins.

by Mike on Sep 2, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought the UFC can cut you after 1 loss!

by John G on Sep 2, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

just 2 put in perspective people thinking amir will get cut if he losses 1 more……the ufc has only droped 1 ultimate fighter winner and it was travis lutter ( missed weight for his title shot he won on the show)…sum ultimate fighter winners who have lost 2 in a row… kendell grove, matt serra, forrest griffen, nate diaz, mac danzig…and soon 2 be maybe rashad and bisping…..they will NOT cut him if he loses this fight, the guy just had over a year of rehab and they probly didnt exspect him to be a world beater in his first fight back also

by JG on Sep 2, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

The UFC has to fulfill the money requirements though right? Or whatever was agreed upon? They dont HAVE to cut them, its their option. Many a fighter has lost 2 straight and kept fighting. Couture lost 2 straight and went to LHW Interim Championship. Nate Diaz has lost 2 straight and hes a UFN Main Event. So its not like they have to be cut, but I remember reading something that they hold the right to cut after 2.

But John is right too, you can get cut after 1 loss, or just released from a contract altogether. Timmy was dropped after losing to Nog for the belt. And AA left on a decent win streak. Dont forget Babalu getting cut too.

Pretty much, UFC can cut whoever, whenever, however. Theres not really a clear cut way. Just guidelines.

by Synyster on Sep 2, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Think about it… the UFC can cut a fighter at any time. It would only make sense to cut someone with a losing record but I am sure Dana would not find himself stuck with an absolute a$$ and not have a way to get rid of them.

by DJ on Sep 3, 2009 6:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Lol he gets cut form strikeforce and UFC pick him up isnt it suppose to happen the other way around

by Nor Cal Mexican (formely Philicutioner) on Sep 2, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

thats what I thought too…someone said the other day that its possible that Dana is buyin’ up all the talent so that SF cannot…makes sense I guess…Buy em’ up and cut them so they look like damaged goods

by McArthur on Sep 2, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

That actually makes a lot of sense; in the UFC Baroni’s just entertainment, not really a contender. In a smaller show like SF he’s a go to guy when a fighter gets injured or has to pull out of a fight for some other reason.

by O damn he got caught on Sep 2, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

WEAK SAUCE!!!!!!!

This fight BETTER be on the untelevised undercard. Pay money to watch Baroni fight someone?? AND that someone has an MMA record of 1-1???

QUICK QUESTION: At the beginning of Amir’s fight with Hendricks, he was announced as having a pro mma record of 2-0. To my knowledge, he was 1-0 with his one “pro fight” being when he beat CB to win the TUF title. Does anyone know what the UFC is considering Amir’s other win? On the show, he was 0-0. The recorded fights that take place on TUF are not real pro fights because the results are not releases immediately after the fight, hence, they are “exhibitions”.

by ViolentMike on Sep 2, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Baroni’s entrance will probably be worth being televised. And I agree that Sadollah is 1-1. He has to be the worst TUF champ ever.

by PW on Sep 2, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

VM: No doubt in my mind that he is 1-1….Diont know wtf the UFC is smoking!

by John G on Sep 2, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m surprised they would put Amir up against Baroni. Amir has no real experience in the cage against any credible opponents. That alone is enough to mess with him mentally. Baroni may be old news, but, he is somewhat of a veteran to the sport. That’s a big step up for Amir and he’s got a ton of pressure riding on him already.

by allamerican on Sep 2, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

this rumour must be a joke. baroni is on a different level than amir. this is like having tim sylvia fight brock lesnar.

by bradpittfightclub on Sep 2, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I’ll chime in and agree with the regulars
Baroni’s entrance will be longer than this fight
Amir will be going to sleep
Amir will be getting cut
we won’t have to deal with amir thinking he’s funny or relevant again!
Baroni will be the
Is Baroni down to ww? If so he’ll be a gate keeper of sorts for the UFC, strong enough in the fight game to be the guy to beat to advance to the upper echelon of fighters, but not good enough to beat the top (wrestlers) in the WW division. Not because he’s bad, but because his gas tank is never full enough to make it against someone who pushes him

by kevin on Sep 2, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate Baroni so much I have to say, no matter what…‘WAR SADOLLAH’!

by DAVE A on Sep 3, 2009 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I don,t think he ever had a chance, not even on commentating on his bits on Spike.

by neeko on Sep 3, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Baroni has long been irrelevant and the UFC has brought him back.

Amir has had a long lay off on top of the fact that he barely has any MMA experience. I am not going to dump on him for that. Losing to Hendricks was expected, IMO.

If Amir provides an exciting match, win or lose, he stays in the UFC.

That’s a lock.

by OJR on Sep 3, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Weird fight…how did Baroni even make it back to the big show? It’ll be curtains imo if he loses but even worse for Amir if Baroni wins

by McArthur on Sep 2, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

I’m sure they will give him 2 or 3 more fights before to kick him out.

by Alpha Male on Sep 2, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s some good match ups for Phil, stylistically a fight with a brawler like Matt Brown, Chris Lytle, Kevin Burns, rematch with Pete Sell (if he’s not retired due to being punch drunk). Agreed that his rec/history doesn’t indicate he’ll be a serious contender but there’s some entertaining FOTN possibilities in there for him.

by O damn he got caught on Sep 2, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

he’s not punch drunk, he is from NYC ;) j/k

by McArthur on Sep 2, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t see Amir beating Baroni. Not that I think Baroni is much, but Amir sux! It won’t go past the first, but might go longer than Amir’s last fight, LOL!

by BOW on Sep 2, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

So Amir would be like the only person with a losing MMA record in the UFC if he lost? They really shouldn’t have signed some1 with 1 fight just for the sake of appearances—maybe they never expected him to win the show.

by frosnt on Sep 2, 2009 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

Thats exactly it, and his situation contributes a lot to his marketability; everybody loves the underdog that somehow manages to come out on top. I think the interest is fading fast for Amir though.

by O damn he got caught on Sep 2, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

by frosnt on Sep 2, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think much of “the best eva” either but i do think he will smash Amir.

No easy fights for any of the recent tuf guys, i wonder why?

by Lester The Pimp on Sep 2, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

This guy is irritating. He’s trying too hard to be the “next Forrest Griffin”. I called the Hendrix win. He was good on the show, but I see him talking more than fighting.

Why isn’t Handrix being rewarded with a big name fight? I hate politics.

by Stryker on Sep 2, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Baroni sucks, why the fuck is he back in the ufc

by Tank on Sep 2, 2009 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed. He is Barnett Jr. – in that he is a roid freak with a lot less talent than Barnett.

by doubled on Sep 2, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Regarding Amirs record:

The UFC like to include random TUF fights on fighter records from time to time… Diego Sanchez, Rashad Evans and so many others have had their records padded.

Sadollah has a record of 1-1… despite what the UFC says

by Paul on Sep 2, 2009 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

Baroni may have been a roider in the past (I ain’t reading into the soap opera aspects of the story) but he’s looked much better since he started fighting at WW. I think he’ll KO Amir with his hard-hitting fists and Amir will be added to the list of TUF winner who have fizzled out, like Lutter, Serra, Danzig, and Grove.
