Randy Couture 'leaning towards dropping down' to 205

Props: Sherdog.com
Quoteworthy:
"I haven’t really looked at the cards and the shows that they have. What’s on the schedule, I don’t know, but I’m especially leaning towards dropping down. I’m pushing in weight. It would be easy for me to make 205 and there’s more interesting fights there right now. I don’t know how realistic it is to think I’m going to be the guy in line to fight Lesnar after dropping the decision [last] Saturday night."
UFC hall-of-famer and five time champion Randy Couture contemplates a future at light heavyweight -- a division he hasn't dabbled in since Chuck Liddell knocked him out of it in February 2006. Since then, Captain America has gone 2-2 in the heavyweight division but after being put on his keister by Brock Lesnar and out-performed by Antonio Nogueira, Couture thinks it's only "Natural" that he goes back down to light heavyweight for a slew of "interesting fights." How 'bout it Maniacs? Anyone at 205 you want to see go toe-to-toe with the living legend?

i love randy but the only thing that could really help him if he could drop a couple of years off his AGE…lol…i just had to throw that out there..i respect the old guy and all.

yeah, he can no longer take a big punch! He recovers well, but was lucky the fight sat. wasn’t stopped when his legs buckled. He can still hang with almost anyone, and the “big” fights are at 205. After Tito beats coleman, maybe Randy/Tiot?

Now that his name is on Nog’s resume, i couldn’t care less about anything handy does. People always made it out like Nog needed to fight him to retain his status in MMA especially when the pride guys weren’t doing so well in the UFC.
He won’t be anything more than a co-main event from now on so make him fight wand or maybe one of the new kids who need a solid name on their ledger. Don’t waste anyone’s time by putting him against silva or chida or rampage. He’ll get clobbered.

NNR: I love it when you talk Big NOg! lol!!!!!
Unfortunatly, Randy will drop down in 205 and get an immediate title shot…that is the story of Randy’s career! Unwarrented title shots based on age and name recognition!

Dana NO MORE FREE TITLE SHOTS! He won’t get one at LHW this time.

Just watch. Methuselah™ will get a fight with Anderson at the New Year’s or Superbowl card. They need some big names for those cards, and Anderson needs a big-name opponent at LHW. The rest of the big-name LHWs are booked.
If this did happen, Methuselah™ would end up looking back with fond nostalgia at the beatings Chuck gave him the last time he fought at this weight.
Remember gang, if this does come to pass, you heard it here foist. ;-)

he will not get an immediate title shot. the only reason he got a shot at timmy was because there was no one in the hw division at that time.

A fight against T.Silva would be a great fight to see if he has what it takes to compete against the best at 205?

they will put him up against tito, someone he could still beat.

If Randy dropped to LHW there is only a few fights I’m intersted in. Randy vs Rampage, Randy vs. Anderson Silva. Randy vs. Tito II Randy vs. Machida.
,
Now I’m not saying he has a chance to win all these fights, but to me they would just be the most marketable and entertaining to watch. I mean
I can’t see the UFC selling a PPV with Randy Couture fighting Thiago Silva or Rashad Evans.
,
But If I really had my way, I’d love to see a fight that was talked about for years as well as even a face off in the UFC octagon way back and that’s Randy vs. Wandy!! Now that would be my dream match for Couture.

interesting guys, nog doesn’t say Randy greased, but does say vaseline hindered the choke a bit. I thought something may be up, that was a tight choke. Not taking away from Randy escaping, but to escape that choke from Nog was crazy!

no, nog says it probably came from gloves or face. Nog is a class act. I know i defended mir’s comments yesterday, but at the same time, i never did hear Nog bring up his staph on his own. I don’t like excuses, but nothing you can do about Rogan making them for you!
by kevin on Sep 2, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I watched the press conference, Noguera even said it could have been vaseline on his own glove from connecting with a good punch. Zzzzzzzzzzzz; but w/e looks like it’s “lets all hate on Couture day” everyone seems to be finding some lame reason to rip on the guy.

who’s ripping on him, I’m posting news, I got a post in moderation and this link specifically says the vaseline comes (probably) from the gloves or face. Just passing along relevant news Odamn. I don’t think Randy even thinks about cheating, but none the less, it’s news!

I think it was good that Rogan brought that up, that’s something that they’re real bad at in the UFC, giving information about the fighters health and stuff like that, at times I think/know they’re just making stuff up to make everything look good so they can hype whoever they want…
by RoBerto on Sep 2, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the boys at 205 will be too quick for Randy. If he fights at 205 he should quit trying to stand and bang because even the heavyweights are starting to be able to drop him. I think it may have reached the point that he may fight Anderson Silva. If Anderson doesn’t go up to heavyweight, then that would probably be his next fight at 205. Randy will likely lose and then retire after 3 straight losses. Which will be unfortunate because if you think about it, Lesnar, Nog, and A. Silva is pretty rough compeition to compete against. I’d like to see Randy vs Rich Franklin.

fighters he has a chance of beating at 205: tito, liddell coleman and jardine! no way he can hang with any top 10, unless jardine is still in the top 10! intresting fights like fighting machidia and silva, give me a fucking break, get with it people! i appreciate what he has done and given to the sport, however i would like to see him against bones just to build a star out of that kid!

It would be a good fight with Tito breaking into the top 10 and Randy re-establishing himself at LHW.

he’s had his time, now he’s just taking air time away from some lhw prospects if hes just going to be fighting top 10 guys, let young guys make a name off him and build the next star!

Truth be told, Randy’s gonna get destroyed at LHW, but i guess it’s the right move anyway… the LHW guys are way faster and more technical than the HW’s

depends on how he fights. If he goes all-out Greco/dirty boxing/GnP, he can do it. If he tests his hands, it will go poorly. His reaction time has slowed.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Sep 2, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree punch, he can hang, but his reaction time (with age) has slowed. I still think in the clinch/wrestling he can beat anyone, he did really well against Lesner. As far as reaction, the Lesner punch proves it, hellen keller saw that punch coming, and randy still got caught!

his record isn’t great, his “legend” comes from winning fights he shouldn’t and being in all those title fights, so worrying about wins and losses at this point isn’t necessary. Win or lose, it’s usually a good close fight until he gets caught!

by brandon on Sep 2, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
While you may think its a good fight (I dont, just my opinion thought) I really doubt that fight would happen. Jonny Bones needs a division Gatekeeper next, and although Randy has lost his last 2, he is way about Bones. Randy will more than likely fight a well known name, I’m thinking maybe Vera, or T.Silva (hope that doesn’t happen, T.Silva would kill him). Cant see them giving him Jardine, since that’d be 3 losses in a row for either guy. Randy vs Forrest would never happen. Some may say Anderson Spider, but that doesn’t make any sense to me. Randy being KO’d twice in his fight with Nog tells me that he wouldnt last any longer than Forrest did with the Spider. I think we’ll wait a few months for the LHW division to straighten itself out a bit and for the matches to happen and everyone is free before they announce Randy’s next opponent.

listen randy is way over hyped. Yeah hes been a warrior of the sport and a 4 or 5 time champ but hes only defended it once.he has a 16 and 10 record and everyone thinks hes god. Granted he does put on good fights but hes getting too old.He has interesting fights at both weight classes. hes never faced mir which people would watch and i think he would dominate velasquez. people would even watch him vs cro cop pending his next fight. At 205 theres a world of possibilities. forrest would be a great money maker and he could also face the winner of tito vs coleman. even him vs hendo would be a great battle of two great wrestlers with very improved stand up. What i wouldnt do is put him against up and comers like carwin, duffee or bones jones or anyone like that. What do you think mma world
by brandon on Sep 2, 2009 11:27 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree that he shouldnt fight any of those younger up and comers. that would be career suicide for randy if he was to lose against one of them. stick to the vets and the money maker fights (hendo, franklin, chuck, forrest, etc.).

Randy isnt a living legend because of his record man, his is a legend for the wars he has had in the octagon, and constantly defying the odds throughout his whole career. I see all of you people bashing him and saying he is overrated but when did anyone say Randy had the best record, or that he was the greatest ever. Having a 30-1 record is great, but the fact Randy is 16-10 doesnt at all xhange the fact that Randy has participated in some of the greatest and most important fights in the history of the business. Go watch the last minute of the Tim Sylvia fight, and that will explain to you why Randy is a legend. So basically what Im saying is that 16-10 may not make you the best ever, but it sure as hell can make you a legend and one of the most beloved fighters ever

The problem for Randy at LHW is the fighters are faster than HW. His problem at HW is they are bigger. He really has enjoyed a wonderful career in MMA and although I am sure there are fighters he could beat, he will never contend again. Father time slows down for no one.
I enjoy MMA and will watch his fights moreso because they are part of a card rather than watching because he is there.

there are less “wrester” based lhw’s so he actually brings more interesting match ups to 205..

vs. Jon Jones

Its funny to me that people hate so much. Its not like he goes out there and just gets his ass kicked without putting up a good fight. I agree enzo, but the argument is about him being overratted. Just because u think someone is overratted, doesn’t mean u are hating or dislike them… The Randy- overratted argument has valid points and I agree. Does that mean we hate or dislike him, not necessarily. I’ve thought he was for overratted for the past couple years. Everyone then said Fedor needed to beat Randy to be the best HW. And well, we all know how that would have panned out. Fedor KILLED Nog twice! And Nog dominated Randy.

“Fedor KILLED Nog twice! And Nog dominated Randy.”
More mma math failure. Nog sat under Fedor looking for a sub; he wasn’t trying to get the fight back to a standing position, he was working from his guard and looking for submissions. Couture stylistically is a completely different fighter. (I’m not going to debate Fedor vs anyone, cause again, it’s pointless). IMO Nog clearly won the fight, but I wouldn’t say he dominated. It was a good back n forth fight. Ppl wanna act like Nog is a chump now; and like Randy just got beat by a nobody. Reading some of these posts makes me nauseos.

I’m not saying I want to see the fight or that Randy would win the fight, I’m pointing out the difference in Nog’s and Randy’s fighting styles and saying that a fight between Fedor and Nog that took place 4-5 years ago, is no indication of how a fight between Randy and Fedor would look today. Two completely different fighters, that take completely different approaches to a fight. And until they actually do fight, no one knows if Couture’s wrestling style would give Fedor more/less trouble, than Nog laying on his back looking for subs the entire fight while eating GnP. My only point was that the statement:
"Fedor KILLED Nog twice! And Nog dominated Randy."
is MMA math FAILURE

It’s not even worth answering gaara odamn, the guy’s not capable of debating, he just snipes at people who dont agree with him without ever contributing anything himself. Here’s what he wrote about Couture the day after the Nog fight.
“randy fights the best? lol, believe your own hype kids..so can u point out his best wins? against sylvia? yeah! right, and by the way if he ever fought in japan years ago? he will be humiliated by the likes of CC, Fedor, Nog, barnett, overeem, bonjasky, kharitonov seeing him lose against sesame street character leaves no doubt in my mind that he will be battered by fujita, zuluzinho and HMC..his record would have been 1-23 with a win only from a japanese takuyaki vendor that starts training for mma hours before they fight..and would still be considered a legend in America..lol”
No wonder he just chirps at other peoples posts when that’s an example of what he writes by himself.

Randys still got it… if he had of had the same gameplan that he did against gonzaga (clinch, push up against fence) he would have won the fight but I think being in his hometown he wanted to go for the big KO finish instead. Randy is and always will be the king.

Good post Mike. I agree with everything except the last sentence haha. O Damn posted up higher how Randy started competing at the age of 34.. that is unheard of to this day. He is the oldest fighter, the most decorated, and he started out fighting at an age that everyone considers to be old anyways. Thats pretty hardcore no matter what anyone says.
Haters are haters I guess

he needs to lean towards retirement. His record is garbage.

randy could fight anyone and have a decent chance. at 205 he is a dominating wrestler. if he gets it to the ground he will be ok. i think he will find out real quick that on his feet, the punches at lhw only come faster.

Would be interesting to see if he can keep up as far as speed goes with the light heavyweights… I can’t imagine Randy’s getting any quicker. I always love to see him fight though.
