UFC 104: 'Machida vs. Shogun' a battle of fighting styles

As part of its media tour in Los Angeles, Calif., Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) held a press conference today for the UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shodun" event to be held at the Staples Center on Oct. 24.
The outdoor presser, which was open to fans, was held at the Nokia Plaza and featured the title fight headliners, UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and top contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, as well as the co-headliners, heavyweights Cain Velasquez and Ben Rothwell.
As the year’s second headlining UFC event that pits two Brazilians up against each other — and which features Mexican-American Cain Velasquez — UFC 104’s bevy of Latin fighters was a fact not lost on the Los Angelenos in attendance.
However, if anyone is looking for good old-fashioned trash talking, you will not find it here.
In fact, Machida and Rua sat beside one another on the plane ride over from Brazil, although they didn’t realize it until they boarded the plane. Having known one another for years, the champion described his relationship with the man who will be the first to challenge for his title as that of "old friends."
The question was posed if there is any rivalry between the two fighters, or even between the cities that they fight out of — Rio de Janeiro for Machida’s Team Blackhouse, and Curitiba for Rua’s Universidade da Luta — similar to the sports rivalries we often see in some American cities or between opposite coasts.
But the true rivalry that exists, and which we will all bear witness to on October 24, is that of fighting styles.
Machida is known for his elusive Shotokan karate style — so elusive in fact that he is one of the least-damaged fighters in mixed martial arts history, and has yet to lose a round or even be knocked down by an opponent in 15 fights … and he’s fought a who’s who of top fighters.
And if "The Dragon" is known for his elusiveness, "Shogun" is known for his aggression. The Muay Thai stylist has earned a very impressive 15 of his 18 victories by way of (T)KO.
It’s a classic matchup that pits the aggressive striker against the pinpoint accurate counter-striker.
Rua says he plans to demonstrate to the world that his style is superb on October 24, as he attempts "to prove … Muay Thai can be efficient against (Machida’s) style."
For his part, the champion doesn’t plan on falling into that trap. As he told the fans in attendance, "I (will) try to push him to my style."
While the event is still eight weeks away — and falls after two upcoming September UFC events in Ultimate Fight Night 19 and UFC 103 — the media tour provided the UFC with the opportunity to reconnect with the Los Angeles market, which hasn’t hosted a UFC event since UFC 60: "Hughes vs. Gracie" back in May 2006, although nearby Anaheim is a consistent destination for the promotion.
The big winners of the day were the UFC fans in attendance. Not only did they get to see four exciting fighters talk about their upcoming opponents, but they received complementary tickets to UFC 104 at the conclusion of the press conference. Not too shabby.

Shogun’s style will play perfectly intp Chida’s…straight forward…not huggin’ or hatin’ cause I’m indifferent but just can’t see how Shogun can beat someone that has never really been hit…imo it’ll be short night for Shogun

It could happen. Machida got caught in a triangle by Tito. I can’t recall Tito ever subbing anyone. Shoguns’ submission game is a little bit better than Tito’s. That was sarcasm by the way.

Yeah, ALMOST got caught just like Silva ALMOST got caught by Lutter, the fact of the matter in either case they are good submission practitioners and should be treated as such.

Machida is a way better grappler than machida but at this point in time i say it’s the best option. Guys better start diving for his legs coz standing both him and andy are just too far ahead of the current MMA world.
John – I just didn’t see the value in shogun. Guessing you got him +370-380?

Anyone picking Shogun needs to pull their heads out of their collective asses and start fighting for some air.
Shogun will win a lot of fights at LHW in the next few years, but this ain’t one of ’em.
Anyway, that’s my limb, and I’m going out on it.

i beg to disagree Mc u failed to realize that Machida’s style also perfectly fits into shogun’s..machida don’t want to be hit that’s why shogun will get in front of him the whole night and punch his face…and by the way if tito can bring machida down and even a close submission..there’s no way in hell shogun can’t…it’ll be so sweet for me Mc and some guys on here!!!
machida’s punches cant hurt shogun..after receiving those baby pats shogun will have zero respect for machida’s stand up just like hendo did to bisping and stalk him to a horrible ko..

LOL, I’m hearing Sadollah/Baroni at 106. I can’t believe the UFC brought this can back, and now they try to pad their TUF winner’s faltering record with his sorry a$$. I bet Baroni talks lame trash for three months about how he’s a top-5 welterweight, then promptly gasses at the weigh-ins.

Shogun simply does not have the tools. But that said, I’m curious to see what happens when someone actually manages to connect with machida. He is certainly not the ‘strongest’ lhw in the division..

LOL @ he gasses at the weigh-ins.
He might actually be capable to get this one! Amir’s chin is kind of suspect right now. If a little Hendricks was able to do it… why not Baloney?

Well JJ – i think they’re trying to kill off anyone who is a draw and a “UFC veteran” at 185 or HW aka the decent divisions in strikeforce. Coker better hope this Dream Alliance bears something because otherwise no one including me wants to see 3-2 Fresno guys and the same stars fighting over and over at the Pavillion.

I think Dana is using Machida to punish the last few men to beat Chuck Liddell. He already killed Rashad, next is Shogun, and after that it looks like Rampage.

Tito is a wrestler, that is why he got Machida down and yeah he almost sunk in a triangle, but he didn’t. Tito has great strong take downs, more then likely much better takedowns then Shogun. Ask Thiago Silva, Rashad Evans, and Rich Franklin(all fighters who had never been KO’d before fighting Machida) about his pitty pat punching style not effecting them. The pity pat sets up the power punch. Overall I think Shoguns style will play into Machida’s then the other way around. Machida already showed that he can be ultra patient untill the other fighter commits. Shogun will eventually fall into this trap just as everyone else does.

NNR: Yeah, I bet money on Shogun because of the high odds I got! At close to +400, I would be forced to bet Shogun against anyone!
I love both Machida and Shogun so its easy for me to be unbiased when discussing this fight. Yes Machida has the advantage in the stand up, but people forget that when Shogun was firing on all cylinders, he was probably the best LHW striker in the world. I have a feeling that we will see PRIDE Shogun show up and make this a fight for the ages. if it hits the ground, Shogun will win this fight, but Machida is rightfully the favorite, ut anyone that agrees that he is a -450 favorite over shogun is out of their focking mind!
The thought of this fight is mouth watering!

I think the key here is exactly what Shogun has said…his muay thai. I don’t think Machida has fought anyone that could kick the way Shogun can. Machida has openly said that he baits his opponents by leaving his leg out so that they will kick and he sits back waiting to counter. I don’t think he will want to eat too many Shogun leg kicks and even if he does…Rua can easily fake the kick with a superman punch or just go for the head. It still remains to be seen what happens to Machida if/once he gets hit a few times. I know it hasn’t really been done yet but a cerebral striker like Rua is going to connect on a few shots. If Shogun can get his clinch game going…I think it will be a short night for Machida.
A win for Rua involves a lot of “ifs” but he does have the tools and the skills to take this fight. I can’t wait for this fight cause it’s gonna be a doozy.

Absolutely cannot wait for this fight. When they first announce it, I thought Shogun was the best possible opponent currently in the LHW division to give Machida a true test. People were dissing Shogun based on his Coleman fight, which I thought was stupid. He looked so crisp against Liddell, but there again… people were dissing Shogun because Liddell hadn’t looks as good in his past few fights. Shogun’s last fight was spectacular, executed almost flawlessly. His aggression and lack of respect for Liddell’s power were just awesome. He stood right in there, never backed down. THAT’s what I want to see against Machida! (Machida’s my favorite; I want to see him tested to the max.)

I am going for Machida, only going by Shoguns last few fights, and as impressive as his knockout of Chuck was, knocking out Chuck doesn’t mean as much as it used to. His fans would like to believe that he is still the same fighter that he was in Pride and is still as dangerous. I’ll believe it when I see it. Silva has proved not to be the same fighter he once was. I doubted John and he proved me wrong about Nog, I haven’t got a problem being proved wrong with Shogun. Lets hope we see fight of the night with this one.

What Shogun needs to do is make like he’s goin for the inside thigh kick and instead kick him/knee him in his sac, then make like he’s all sorry about it. After that he can use that Kevin Burns style open handed jab straight to the eyes; hopefully the ref miss’s at least one of these or it impairs Machida enough for Shogun to finish the fight. If all else fails he can get into the clinch and whisper some homo comments in his ear to throw him off his game. Then as long as they refuse the instant replay it’s smooth sailing from there on out. Shogun, if you’re reading this write down the gameplan and execute. I call it
“Operation: Plan That Cannot Possibly Fail”

I like hwo these to are so professional about one another- But that agreesion in your face style that Rua has is exactly what Machida will be looking for and will trap and counter him. Shogun is good, but really hasn’t show much since entering the UFC he fought Forrest yes knee injury then coleman no condition but due to the knee injury, then he fought chuck who isn’t exactly at the time a elite fighter like he used to be, so really he hasn’t proved nothing… good fight but won’t go down as a historic fight..

Of course Machida could KO Shogun. Machida can put strikes right on a guy’s chin, especially when that guy is swinging away at him like Shogun will. Rashad and Thiago had never been KO’d ’till they ran into Lyoto.
Add the fact that in a five round fight gassing is a very real possibility for Shogun, and that it’s going to be hard to last 25 minutes with the Dragon without being caught badly, and a Machida TKO is a very real possibility IMO.
by Jeremyjackson on Sep 1, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
sorry JJ but machida will not KO shogun..evans and thiago are bound to be koed and i dont think being koed makes any harm to thiago coz it just makes him a better fighter..as for rashad, that guy is hopeless..he will be brutally koed by rashad coz he cant wrestle with him so he will choose to stand and trade, when that happens the inevitable will come..
by gaara on Sep 1, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shogun had one good fight in the UFC and all of a sudden he is the best? Yes the Shogun in Pride would of got in close and created a battle but you can’t possibly think a chuck KO means he’s back to full form and even if he was guarantee a win? Machida will be ready for the best Shogun but I don’t think he needs to even go that far I think this will be a first or second round TKO total domination by Machida. UFC wants to create all the hype they can for Machida and with gun getting a KO over Chuck they know this is the perfect time.

BJ was also thought off as a bada$$ and a favorite to win despite the size difference and Machida did not “barely” win it was a clear decision. He was the first man to hand Rich Franklin a loss so your statement about him “probably not being good back then” is ill-informed.

machida, fought a who’s who, not even close, people like to pick on shogun, who has machida fought, honestly, everyone says rashad is so great because he had a brief interlude with the title, he squeeked out a decision over tito, a way past his prime tito with major back problems, tito pushed machida to a decision win for machida, not really a great accomplishment, rashad ko’ed liddell, so did rua, like everyone likes to say, liddell is way done and past his prime, so really who has rashad or machida beat that they should be considered so high and mighty, machida has beaten a list of nobodies just like rashad, if you discredit any of rua’s victories then you are discrediting machida and rashads victories, shogun has won far more notable victories than either rashad or machida combined, shogun is a completely different animal than anyone machida has ever faced
if shogun and tito were to fight each other tito would get his ass kicked, there would be no going to the judges score cards, tito would get submitted or ko’ed no question, yet tito pushed both rashad and machida to the score cards, for those who want to pick on shogun, look at the facts, machida has fought nobodies, if he beats shogun I will give him his does, until then machida remains just a great fighter

I think this is a bad match up for Rua. His aggresiveness will get him nowhere against Machida… other than knocked out. Machida is too elusive and disciplined to make a silly mistake and get caught. I would put today’s Rua a couple notches ahead of Thiago Silva when it comes to skill and ability.
It’s safe to say that we all know how Machida is going to approach this fight, if Rua comes in trying to take off Machida’s head… Machida ko’s him in the first round. If Rua is smart and tries to pace himself he may last until the 3rd.

He’s beat Chuck and some 45yr old Coleman… two guys past their prime. People need to stop thinking he’s the Shougun of old. That dude isn’t coming back. A fighters abilities either 1. remain the same 2. decline 3. improve. If you look at this 3 fights he’s had in the UFC they aren’t improving, more like a decline. So how does a decline Shougun beat a top of his game Machida???

In the standup I see this fight exactly the same as the Thiago Silva v Machida fight with SHogun coming right after Machida, and Machida gettin on his bike and pickin him apart until he lands a few big shots. I feel shogun’s only way of winning is taking down Machida in every round and using effective gnp, with that said: Machida tko rd 3
by RT on Sep 1, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
no way bro thiago is good but shogun is on another level as far as striking goes, shogun will get machidas timing down then start picking his shots before getting a tko. WAR SHOGUN!

i’m keeping my heart-on for machida..i know that shogun is serious business..but his aggression will be a problem..because it will be used against him..if a guy barely gets hit or knocked down..it’s not by fluke..he has some serious foresight..anticipating your opponent is a skill that is not many fighters posses..i swear the guy goes into a vortex where things are half speed to him and he can aviod trouble…i’m just excited for the fight..should be wicked!

To be honest i think that fight will end up by decision.
I don´t see Shogun Ko Machida. If shogun don´t be pacient he can get Ko. But Shogun will be smart. I hope!!
SHOGUN by decision
War Shogun!!!

Whats up with everyones stupid comments about “Shoguns agression will play to machidas hand”??? Did you guys see Shoguns last fight? Not agressive at all. Please don’t be fooled into thinking that Shogun is going to ram Machida, I assure he won’t. Rua is very patient in his fights and even though he pushes forward in his fights he knows how to retreat and block and the same time. True Thiago rushed in and got Ko’d but did you see him block any shots or move around? Thiago was flat footed the whole fight. Shogun was on his toes when he fought Chuckie. I see this fight being 50/50 and thats a fact. All you Machida fans that think it will be a walk in the park for Machida are delirious. Shogun and Machida both have a weakness, How ever finds each others first and capitalize on it will win.

By Shogun, by. I have been a Shogun fan before the pride days. But this one is all Machida. I firmly believe that he is the only one right now who could beat Silva.

and you want me to believe your a fan of shogun since in pride?? lol
by gaara on Sep 1, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We all know Shogun isn’t the same Shogun of Pride gaara. This is the first time I seen you argue by yourself so I take it your a hardcore Shogun fan? I hope he turns out to his old form but I just can’t see it gaara even if he did he would be in for the battle of his life. I hope your right the gun in Pride was just as ferocious as Wandy and very exciting but even against chuck he seemed to be more relaxed and patient.

Machida will prolly dominate this fight but in his prime shogun was a way more exciting fighting… in his pride day (prime)I hope he can pull out this fight but right now machida is the closest to anderson
by zack on Sep 1, 2009 9:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
seriously? everyone is giving Shogun this much of a chance?
the same Shogun who went life and death with Mark friggin Coleman? Machida has only been improving each fight and has not exposed any weaknesses, I don’t see how he has much of a shot in this one.

I am pulling for Shogun but Machida is making it hard to bet against him. He is looking so good lately and Shogun hasnt really returned to his Pride self IMO.

LOL….LOL Shogun is gunna get his ass kicked. I cant believe so many people actually think he will win.
there are so many people on this site that talk about shogun like he is a God, I havnt quite fiqured it out yet.
He is a great fighter but thats it.

Shogun is hype. TKOing Chuck just doesn’t mean as much as it used to. Machida in Round 2.
by spitforce on Sep 2, 2009 12:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont know where al this talk of machida not being stgrong is coming from? He has out muscled every opponent to date and that includes very strong 205’s such as tito and rashad!!
Its also very easy to say shogun will get in machidas face and punch him, the problem is that its machidas strength to avoid and counter this!!!
machida all the way, this guy just keeps getting better and better, plus he trains with anderson so if he avoids him then shogun has very little!!
by mo on Sep 2, 2009 1:00 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
enough already mania, can you get a different picture of Machida already? He has to be the only fighter that you show the same pic of over and over again.

Shogun is going to man handle the fajita machida… So machida has beaten Evans, Silva, Ortiz, and Sokojuo… All these fighters have not gone through what Shogun has… Machida fans, SHogun was ranked number one for a reason and ranked up there for a long time… Now some dumb fighter TKO’s a couple of fighters and now he is unbeatable… HAHAHA…. Machida fans are real funny… There will never be an undefeated fighter in the UFC… Shogun will show Evans, Silva, Ortiz, and sokojuo that no one in the UFC is unbeatable… Shogun will be the victor in this one fellas… He is a better fighter and demonstrated it in his last fight by being light on his feet, blocking punches, and accurate kicks… Machida is a good fighter, however Shogun is soon to be ranked number one again for a long time… Machida fans, enjoy the knock out with Shogun raising his hand by John Macarthy…
WAR SHOGUN!!!

Shogun will get KO’d in the 1st round you watch….WAR Dragon…!!Machida = Modern day Bruce Lee..just look at status you bump ASS, he never lost a round in the UFC and he trains with Anderson Silver…and he came from a Karate/Samuria family, he whole family is into Karate!! he always focussed and trains hard…

My name is Fedor and I am the current WAMMA and last reigning Pride HW Champion. I am consensus #1 p4p king and the greatest MMA artist of all time. In other words, I am Muhammad Ali of MMA.
The most influential, the most popular, and most dominant.
Before I comment on these two inferior fighters, I would like to state my position. Recently, I’ve been trying to make some money in addition to fighting by branding M-1 Global. I’ve already milked to organizations out of business, Bodog and Affliction. Why the hell would I sign with the UFC and make $500k per fight when I could sign with Strikeforce and milk this company to death? I would love to fight Lesnar. But I love money as well. If I fight Lesnar, UFC might give me at most $1million, while they pocket $20million. But if UFC co-promotes with M-1, then I get $5million per event, since I would put my goons in that night’s card and pocket from their fights as well. You see, I am the only one in the business who could even think about doing something like this. GSP, A.Silva, Nog, Lesnar, Machida, Shogun, BJ, all of them can’t write their own checks. I can. Because I am the best.
Now, before I go off to the Stalin People’s Bank to cash my check and stop by at a buffet, I would like to comment on this fight.
I wanted to see Shogun get a rematch with Forrest or fight Rashad before this fight. I also wanted to see Lyoto beat Rampage before this fight. The timing of this event is a bit off. But, it will be a great fight. Don’t buy the PPV. Go watch it free on justin.tv.

It would be interesting to see the first loss of Machida´s record, but….honestly, I don´t think we´ll see it on October 24. I guess Machida have been improving skills for the ocassion….
by Queloncio on Oct 22, 2009 9:19 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is kinda bizaar. Think about Forrest’s skill level. Now imagine that Forrest ever beat Shogun. Wait! IT HAPPENED! Ok now imagine thinking that Forrests skills is on par with Machida! Wait are we losing our minds? Somethings wrong! Now remember where the fighters skill level is situated in the hiarchy of mma. Did Forrest lose really bad to Silva? I think so. Now know that Silva and Machida are not only friends but both at the same level in their MMA. ahhh now your starting to think proper. Do you really think Shogun is going to outclass/ strike Machida? I can’t see it. If Tito almost had a triangle on Shogun its because it was a good move on Tito’s part. Even I could see that but it didn’t happen. Whether a fighter hits another fighters is nothing its whether it works or not… thats my point. Machida has a higher percentage by many percents for accurate hits. There ya go. Machida will win I see it all the way.

I couldn’t agree more , not only is machida on the same level a silva but better, silva himself even said machida gets the best of him when they spar, but shogun took forrests fight after surgery so that’s one reason why Forrest tool that one, but again silva did kick forrests ass like how a dad beats his child so I give the advantage to machida, but I will be rooting for shogun, in my heart I still believe muy Thai is still the best type of martial arts, that and shaolin monks , but well never see shaolin monks enter the octagon
