I read John’s hatred for mir earlier, and while a fan, I’m a fan of Nog too. I like Mir because he doesn’t make excuses, and if asked a question, he answers it honestly, he doesn’t dance around it. I’m not into the excuse game or the GSP like “stock” answer for every question. He has an opinion and if asked gives it. How can you fault a guy for his OPINION… oh wait, it’s mmamania isn’t it

I agree with everything Mir said. I am one of the few that hoped he would beat Brock the second time also. But when has it ever been brought up ( except on this clip ) that there has been talks about him vs. Silva?

wow, now I actually watched it, John, you are 100% delusional! Mir said NOTHING wrong. he answered questions (as I assumed) and came off really well. actually borderline humble!

by kevin on Sep 1, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t really say humble. He showed the arrogance that every world class athlete has to have (and yes, he is a world-class athlete). But I found it pretty hard to disagree with anything he said.

it’s the mental game, you’re right on PW (as usual). If you don’t have that certain swagger and confidence, you will lose. GSP’s first fight against Hughes is a good example, he said he was fighting an idol and in awe, it’s tough to fight like that. Now look, we have an unstoppable WW champion!

What about his whole “my leg broke in half, i was an alcoholic, i was on drugs, blah blah blah” excuse. They still don’t explain why he was a $hitty fighter who got trashed all over the cage by now M-1 announcer Ian Freeman. Anyways Mir sucks, Kongo of all people will expose him.

Mir is quoted by the paper saying: “In the first fight back, I kind of fooled myself into getting back into shape. For this match, I have been more consistent in the gym and also fixed a few things I felt needed fixing in my game, and I feel I am a better fighter with those changes. Right now, I’m taking my training more serious, my sessions are more successful. My leg did bother me after the injury (from motorcycle accident), but I can’t make any excuses.”

I don’t hate Mir, but I have never been a fan of his and have always thought he was overrated, the beatdown he got from Lesner was no surprise to me and quite a few others. I said he would get a major beatdown and that will be the begining of his losing streak when he fights genuine top level fighters in that division. He beat Lesner the first time because of Lesners inexperience, there was no way it was going to happen again. Expect him to get another beating from Kongo and whoever he fights after that.

I don’t think Kongo has a chance ade outside the octagon Mir is a arrogant dick head that you either like or hate but inside the octagon he has great tools and is a great fighter to many fan’s judge a fighter by what they say and not what they do in all sports. I don’t like who he is outside the ring myself but I like his style in the octagon and one of the fan’s that believe his NOG trashing was no fluke. UFC give us NOG and Mir 2 and let’s see who’s right as this is clearly a debate fan’s want settled with proof.

This is a similar situation to Serra/GSP 1…people kept hounding GSP about what was going wrong prior to that fight so he finally spoke up about the circumstances that were affecting his training coming into the fight and then Serra took offense to it. Nog didn’t say anything about the staph or knee injury until the media started to drill into why he didn’t look like he normally looked in most of his fights and now Mir is taking offense.

Kongo would be in the title picture if not for the fact that he’s a functional retard. He has to know that he has zero ability to wrestle/grapple, yet he chose to go to the ground with both Herring and Brown Pride. He will do the same thing against Mir — knock him down, then go to the ground where Mir will take his arm home.

Funny how Mir never had a problem with Rogan making excuses for HIM. Rogan repeatedly stated during the Mir/Nog fight that Mir wasn’t the same fighter after the motorcycle accident and it affected his performance. Now when the shoe’s on the other foot, Mir cries like a baby.

Kongo is going to smash Mir, and hopefully we won’t have to hear any more self-promotional delusions for Mur the Magnificent.

His skill in fighting aside, i like Mir. He comes across really well in interviews. i really like GSP, but you are right Kev his answers are so boring. People who talk the real talk like Penn and Mir are far more interesting. I do think the tried really hard to nail the point home about Nogs injuries (i think Nog beats Mir 9/10 times btw). The reason could be that they want him to be “worthy” of a title shot and just treat the Mir loss as a freak occurance (which it was i guess, Nog shouldnt have fought though. If he had won, would he go around crowing how sick he was and still won? no.)

I dont care who Mir fights, i wish him the best. i just hope we see more fighters talk the talk like him.

The Silva-on-Silva crime would have been fun, but let’s face it, it’s not a competitve match and a waste of one of Anderson’s last three fights. Plus, Wand would have had to beat a couple of top 185’ers to get there, and that’s by no means a sure thing.

mir gets up every morning and the 1st thing he does is stare at himself in the mirror for at least a half hour! talking about how awesome he, how intellectual and intelligent he is, and how he’s just a headsy fighter, just something special. the world is better because frank mir is in it. no need to thank him, he just is who he is! what a tool. this guy knows about 3-4 big, intelligent sounding words, and every interview u ever see him in, he uses one of his smart-guy words! i cant stand frank mir, he couldn’t even beat fedor’s younger brother, let alone fedor himself. fedor would have frank mir out of the cage in 90 seconds tops!!

by deuce 4 on Sep 1, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin/PW,

I agree with you guys about Mir for the most part. I do however get tired of the “no excuse” policy. As an absolute, it is ridiculous. Some things have a dramatic effect on a fighter’s performance. Sure, you can say, “Well, he should either cancel the fight or fight with no excuses.” But that’s not the real world. Sometimes you’re affected, but you think you can still pull it off. Then you get in the ring and you realize “wow, this was a mistake.” It’s like the zero tolerance policy for fighting in schools. The world’s not black and white so inevitably some kid get’s expelled for defending him/herself. The rule is too extreme. It would be remiss for Rogan not to mention something as extreme as being hospitalized with staph for a week prior to a fight. It absolutely had an effect. And we’re all trying to make accurate determinations about who’s the best and where fighters stack up. How can we do that if we don’t take these things into account. IMO, it’s only a problem if someone consistently makes excuses for his failures. The 100% no excuses thing is silly to me. And I was rooting for Mir in that fight. A better response would have been, “people are questioning if Nog was 100% in that fight. Maybe we could give the fans a rematch to settle that issue.”

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Sep 1, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and when did nog ever spew excuses? its the people that are digging why he performed as poorly as he did against mir..your right punch! the “no excuse policy” is pathetic..fans are always saying things like this, like that, but all we do is watch the fight and that’s it..so much for mir bec he just happens to be in the better end when the situation occurs

by gaara on Sep 1, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Puck Head I am not a major fan of Nog, but when he fought Mir, he was even worse than he was aginst Herring and Sylvia. He was a complete joke and based on that I was having a go at John for ages about how Randy was going to destroy him. We all know what happened in that fight. The Nog in the Randy fight was completely different fighter to the one who fought Mir. Mirs striking was about as impressive as Matt Hamil’s, and Nog was on another planet. As much as I may dislike a fighter, unlike a lot of fans I will give credit where credit is due no matter who it is, but I really cannot give Mir credit for his performance becuase of Nogs zero performance. The only people I can see being truly impressed are his fans and the fans who thought Koschecks win over Sanchez was impressive. Also there are still fans who continue with this UFC v Pride thing who are quite happy that Nog lost wether they like Mir or not. I like MMA period Pride, UFC, Affliction (may they rest in peace) it doesn’t matter to me.

Yea well, it downgrades his victory; so can’t blame him from a business perspective. In reality though, it is what it is, Nog looked 100% better in his fight with Couture and he looked like the walking dead against Frank. Nog wins that fight almost every time imo unless he comes in out of shape and injured. Which is exactly what happened when Frank put him away. As a fighter though, I can understand him wanting to stay positive on his performances and wanting to maintain that confidence. He can’t start downgrading himself either.

God that I hate that Stup!d irrelevant f8ck! John said it perfectly the other day…“Mir is TRASH who is just the ultimate opportunists and he has the ballz to actually have an ego..hahaha KLOWN! The Ultimate oppotunist! He reminds me of a WWE klwon, who runs into the ring and pins an opponent that was just Ko’ed by a steel chair!”
The ultimate opportunists.

whats wrong with that? #1 did he know Nog was hurt? #2 we r all oportunists in one way or another, at least us “alpha males” are.
If you see an opportunity to advance your portfolio, whether it be an illegal tip or a hunch, you take it. If you see a hot piece of ass really drunk at a club (I mean the type you dream of fucking) and she’s all over you, are you gonna say “no sweatie, you’re drunk?” I could go on. I’m a firm believer if you step into the cage, onthe field or on the court, you have no excuse! NO ONE is 100% when in competition, true “warriors” persevere.
That all said, would Nog beat Mir the second time around, maybe, hopefully we will get to see it!

by RoBerto on Sep 1, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

roberto, you’re under the impression that excuse means it’s a lie, thats not accurate. An excuse would be like you slapping your wife (I know you wouldn’t) and then telling her it was because she got home late. You weren’t lying, but justifying your actions.

by kevin on Sep 1, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mir felt like Rogan was making excuses for certain fighters (Nog) when every fighter has an excuse for being unable to perform at 100%. It’s part of being a fighter.

by PW on Sep 1, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

let’s give gsp a break for his boring responses to questions due to language barrier..at least he does not use an interpreter and has gone from almost no english..to almost holding his own in interviews..(albeit a wee bit dull)..but i find that mir contradicts himself in this interview..like..i will take any fight..except randy..or a fight i could easily win…well, if ya don’t fight the person, how are you gonna know you’d beat him..every fighter has his day..
rogan did just state the fact that nog had staff, but yeah excuses are lame..but it was the announcer saying it..
plus..a fighter should fight anyone (hero or not..training partner or not) that’s their job..and what better way to prove yourself over someone you have respect for…or is it he is scared to get his ass handed to him by an old man.

by sarah on Sep 1, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

every fighter could use an excuse, I agree, most don’t. On the flip side of this argument (to appease those who disagree with me), I don’t remember Nog brining this up, only others have, so i don’t feel like Nog ever used it as an excuse. This to me makes it worse, it’s like when BJ had his rib busted while beating hughes, he never brought it up, but others did. why? if a fighter isn’t making the excuse, why do others find it necessary to?

by kevin on Sep 1, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, hey, that’s what I’m saying to drunk chicks “"no sweatie, you’re too drunk”. Damn I’m gonna need to change my screen name now. I’m not the good guy to comment on this kev. I’m a firm believer that you can find more than 1 fish in a pond. Anyway, I kind of agreed with what you’re saying that “NO ONE is 100% when in competition, true "warriors" persevere.” That’s exactly what Nog did. But like RoB said “those weren’t excuses those were facts” So Mr irrelevant got to know deep down that he got luky to capitalize on this opportunity when he had the chance. To go crying to Rogan’s comment prove that this egomaniac is a total garbage. He’s trying to do the same that he was doing before the Lesnar rematch. It’s his only way to bring a little relevancy in his previous win so peoples could say that he’s good. How pathetic.

by Alpha Male on Sep 1, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No one made Nog fight, he fought because he believed he could still beat Mir. So do we hear anything about this staph infection if Nog wins, probably not. If BJ taps GSP does he still file a complaint about GSP greasing, if GSP beats Serra the first time does he tell everyone he didnt take him seriously. I dont care what the reason is, unless its a ref or judge there is only one reason you lose at an individual sport, because the person across from you out performs you.

by Drew on Sep 1, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well we all heard about GSP’s torn muscle in his last dominating performance, but that doesn’t exactly support your argument does it. Easy to leave things out when they’re not to your advantage. I understand what you guys are saying about you shouldn’t make excuses, but I haven’t heard Nog making excuses. I don’t think it’s wrong for the announcer to bring up a fighters illness or injury. How many times did MJ get glorified for playing in the playoffs with the flu? I mean, people play with injuries all the time in sports and you hear about it. This is no different. If Tom Brady is playing with a broken rib in the playoffs and has a sub-par game you’re going to hear about it. If he’s playing against my team I’m not going to say, “Oh, that’s garbage, he shouldn’t have played then.” I’ll just say, “Sweet, glad my team is advancing. Sucks for them.” I mean I can kind of understand Mir being a little upset, but really it happens all the time and is a part of sports. Whining about it doesn’t do him any justice, especially when Helen Keller could tell Nog wasn’t anywhere close to 100%

by Diceman on Sep 1, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I left it out because everyone knew GSP tore his groin because he commented about it in the corner in between rounds. That is why he was asked about it. Do you really think after he won the fight, and with no one knowing he tore his groin he would have said not only did I dominate him, but I also tore my groin in the 3rd round so suck on that WW division, no its time to get on top of my wife and drink some malt liquor.

by Drew on Sep 1, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, GSP doesn’t talk like that in general. That’s obviously not what I was getting at so I don’t know why you’re trying to twist things around. Fact of the matter is, you can’t just simplify everything down to, “You just got outperformed” and say that’s all there is to it. That’s not always the way it is. There are a number of different circumstances that may or may not be in an athlete’s control that handicap’s them in competition. Acting like that’s not something that’s valid to discuss doesn’t make any sense.

by Diceman on Sep 1, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he was too injured to fight he shouldn’t have fought. Im not a Mir fan by anymeans, but I can’t stand people making excuses for fighters losses. When Chuck got Ko’d by Page everyone said Chuck was out partying before the fight and thats why he lost. Nog lost Mir won, no one said anything about Nog’s staph infection until after the fight. I was also kidding about the GSP comment, but he wouldnt have brought up the injury he was asked about it.

by Drew on Sep 1, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alright, partying and being injured are completely different. Being out of shape because you’re partying is your fault, getting a staph infection isn’t. No one said anything about Nog being injured because no one knew about it until he showed up looking like the living dead. Nog fought because he’s a tough SOB and he did what the fans wanted. He hasn’t made excuses about it, and I don’t think anyone is out of line for bringing up the fact that he was injured. It’s nothing to get your panties in a bunch about.

by Diceman on Sep 1, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im not upset about Nog getting his ass beaten by a so called over-rated fighter. All his nuthuggers are, thats why everyone is talking about his staph infection. Why did he look so shitty in the Herring fight. He also looked horrible against Sylvia. Just to play devil’s advocate did any stop to think maybe Couture is just old and thats why Nog looked so good against him. Couture caught Nog flush a few times and didn’t even phase him. Randy’s never been the hardest puncher, but if you look at all his other fights when he hits someone flush it hurts them. My point is when you start making excuses for one fighter doesn’t everyone in turn get the same treatment. If you really wanted to you could make excuse’s for most of your favorite fighters loses and make a reasonable point. Instead I say let the results speak for themselves.

by Drew on Sep 1, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, you’re mad because we’re talking about him having a staph infection. Since when do injuries during athletic competition not get talked about? Why is it out of line to state the obvious, which is that Nog was not anywhere near 100% that night? Your point about the punches he took from Couture just gives more validity to the point that he was in a weakened state. He has never been KO’d or even TKO’d except for that fight. Couture was hitting him just as hard if not harder than Mir. Why do you think that is? Oh yeah, the very reason that this whole conversation is happening in the first place. Joe Rogan stated the obvious, and Mir’s ego couldn’t take it. Tough for Mir, it’s part of sports, get over it. Really he should be thankful because odds are if Nog wasn’t hurt he wouldn’t be close to fighting for a title. Sometimes you need to just be thankful for what you have and keep your mouth shut.

There are many valid arguements to be made about Randy’s health in the Nog fight, but it only continues to feed excuses for poor performance’s. Nog got beat until he beats Mir, Mir will always claim he is better than Nog because he absolutly dominated him. For anyone to say that they know for fact without a doubt that Nog would smash mir or even beat him is just wishful thinking, the bottom-line is we wont know untill they fight again. Here’s to hoping it happens soon, and i would like Mir to win just to shut up all the nog fanboys. I would also like Nog to win so he could fight lesnar, so I’ll just bet on whoever the underdog is.

by Drew on Sep 1, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I haven’t heard anything about Randy’s health but whatever. I mean I would like to hear these “many valid arguments”, but I’m assuming they’re largely imaginary. I haven’t said Mir would get dominated in a rematch or anything like that. All I’m saying is that the fact he had a staph infection that hospitalized him obviously factored into the fight. I like Nog, but am by no means a “Nog fanboy”. I will however be shocked if they rematch and it goes anything like the first match.

I thought they hyped it by saying the accident and substance abuse, then mir said yeah I wasn’t in peak condition, but I don’t remember him saying that was why he lost, just that it was a bad time for him, and again he was asked about it. I may be mistaken, but I don’t remember Mir ever bringing it up. I agree that staph affected Nog and am a nog fan, but I do agree, they harped on it way too much. set up a rematch and we will see who the better man is! I think it is a great fight regardless!

Guess I took it as “Before I was coming off an injury, couldn’t perform at 100% and thats why I lost. Now I’m healthy and performing up to my abilities, so I wouldn’t lose those fights again.”

My point is EVERY fighter that steps into the cage is injured or not at 100%, so in my mind, if you step in there to fight, thats it, the best man THAT NIGHT wins. anything can happen in this great sport, thats what rematches are for, to try to prove it was a fluke!

Lol, Nog’s accident when he was younger was just as bad Kevin, so you gotta respect him just as much. And I’ve definitely heard Mir talk about how he was coming off the injury blah blah blah. And NOW he’s 100%; which is just like saying he wasn’t 100%-in other words an excuse, the EXACT same thing he’s complaining about. Sure, fighters are rarely 100% when they get in the cage, but they’re also rarely at 30% like Zombie Nog was when he fought Mir.

Agreed. That was an excellent interview and nothing wrong with anything Frank said. Saturday night I kept thinking about Mir and how bummed and pissed off he must have felt given that Rogan must have mentioned Nog’s injuries/ailments a dozen times during the fight. Even in the postfight interview he asked about it. During the telecast he used the words anamoly and aberration a couple of times. I can’t blame Frank for feeling a little bitter. Nog got in the cage that night and lost. Period. Quit talking about it.
In the interview Mir is extremely complimentary to Randy calling him an idol and a guy he didn’t want to fight because he didn’t think he could possibly try to hurt him.
He also talks about Fedor, Forrest and Anderson and I think I agreed with everything that he said.

Why do so many people hate Frank Mir? He really is a well-spoken, smart fighter and commentator. People also think he is overrated. he used to be the heavyweight champion of the world and is definitely a top 10 heavyweight in the world. I really sea saw with Mir a lot, sometimes he comes off as intelligent and well spoken like you said. His commentary is decent at the WEC events. But something changes in Frank before fight time; he comes off as pompous and arrogant. I don’t have a hard time rooting for Frank at all. I love his mind set, his personality, just everything he brings to the table.. He speaks the truth 100% of the time and ducks no question. Listening to him in this interview, it’s hard not to agree 100% with him. I mean fighters shouldn’t be embarrassed for stepping into the octagon and giving it their all no matter the outcome. Fuck, their stepping into the octagon for crying out loud! Respect that! And if Fedor thinks he has nothing to prove then wtf is he doing?!

by Anthony on Sep 1, 2009 12:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fighters should be respected for getting in the cage regardless of outcome. Absolutely!!! Agree with Mir on that. It was an A-hole statement immediately after however when he took a shot at those on our couches watching “who don’t understand.” Excuse me Frank, but it is the fans who provide you with the opportunity to make big bucks fighting as your career. While it’s true some fans don’t understand the sacrifices fighters make, it’s equally true Frank Mir does not understand the ways we ALL must put ourselves out there just to survive in this world. This mentality is no different and no better than Lesnar flying the double bird after his win. I’m thumbs down on Mir, as there is always an undercurrent to his remarks that smacks of being hugely insecure, which he unsuccessfully tries to mask with arrogance. I’m also tired of hearing about his references of breaking people’s limbs in fights. Get over it Mir. It’s not real cool, and it again comes off as arrogant.

Mir brings intelligence to the sport. He speaks with words that have more than 2 syllables and stays away from all the cliche verbage most other athletes repeat. Cocky, sure, but he’s earned it. Only thing I disagree with is Fedor having something to prove. Fedor has done enough in his career that he shouldn’t have to prove he’s top of the food chain. But I do agree with Mir in that if Fedor doesn’t feel like proving he’s best in the world by fighting others who are best in the world, he needs to give it up. I’m sure he sapped enough money from Affliction to retire, so maybe he should.

Do you really think Joe would survive one round with Frank Mir? :P

by San Jose Rob on Sep 1, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

From what I understand I think Joe would last a round and possibly more with Frank Mir. He has been studying martial arts since he was 13, was a Full contact Tae Kwon Do Grand Champion at 19(he beat the LW[his division], middleweight, and HW champions at 19 years old) and he has a brown belt belt in BJJ under Eddie Bravo [that maybe a black belt by now]]. He has the stand up game and ground game. He may give up to much on the weight side but I could mos def see Joe holding his own. Eddie Bravo has said on many occasions that Joe could easily compete and stir things up in the 170# division. On that note I believe he is a bit of a stoner and may never pass the drug test!

As far as Mir’s comments go there is some truth in what he says, even though he is a bit of an arrogant prick. But I think that is an important charterstic in being a fighter. You have to think you can compete with anyone at any time, and that you have the best set of tools to do it. 9 out of 10 times Nog beats Mir. Mir caught him on the off day. He was the better man that day. Does anyone believe he is the better fighter, probably not. His comments about Fedor are imo very true. Being a fighter is all about proving! You are testing your skills vs your opponents. If you have nothing to prove, then why fight? If you have nothing to prove why be a proffesional athlete at all. It is all about getting your arm raised, getting the championship ring, the belt around your waist, the gold around your neck. Fighting is one sport that is all about proving who you are in the ring or cage. It is ridiculous to think otherwise.

by Da Monkey on Sep 2, 2009 7:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or maybe some people fight for the same reason you go to work…to make money. Let’s be realistic, this IS a job and a business. These guys aren’t fighting for free just for the sport of it like it’s a Sunday softball league. It’s a big business that they’re getting paid big money for. Rampage just did the same thing by doing another season of TUF which was a monetary decision. Being known as the best fighter ever is something Mir will never have a chance at, so I don’t think he’s in position to tell someone like Fedor what he needs to prove.

by Diceman on Sep 2, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It wasn’t a question of Forrest being a coward losing to Anderson, it was the way he acted after the fact. There was nothing “warrior” about his exit from the octagon.

I agree with everything he said in this video. He is completely honest and humble. He is a bit cocky but he knows when he got he a$$ whooped (brock). He may have a right to be cocky from his past accolades but that will get you nowhere in the MMA world with the fans and growing as a fighter. I really dont know what is in store for him for the rest of his career , but i think he represents the sport of MMA very well.

Did this guy have his answers scripted out to be controversial or is he really this delusional?

Of course he’s upset that Rogan was honest saying Nogueira wasn’t at 100% in his last fight. That was the biggest win of Mir’s career and it’s looked upon by people now as Mir getting Nog when he clearly wasn’t ready to fight.

Listening to him talk about Fedor is really nauseating. Mir is so overrated it’s a complete joke.
Not only is this guy ranked in the top 10 because he fights in the UFC, but if he ever fought Fedor he would be annihilated.

Also not a big surprise he holds Couture in such high regard he’s also had an extremely overrated career and his 16 and 10 record is proof of that.

jump Mir has beat the best fighter Fedor has faced like it or not. He beat NOG who was rated pretty high at the time injured or not that jumps him up in ranking. Anyone can say this guy is better or that guy is, but when every MMA ranking board has Mir as a top five it’s pretty naive to argue. Exactly!

I do not have a problem with Mir’s ranking. He is one of the best HW on the ground period. I feel that people want to diminish Mir’s skill due to his loss to Lesnar as nobody wants to admit Lesnar can beat a good HW. Mir was overrated, Randy was too old etc.

Nog is the best fighter Fedor has every faced and did beat him just as PH said above. There are many times fighters fight hurt, sick etc. If NOG was so sick he should not of fought. His people definitely should of had him postpone as a title shot was on the line.

The only problem I have with Mir is that he is too confident in his own abilities. Fighters need to be self actualized to win. He is a world class BJJ artist and wants to believe he is a world class striker. He should focus on being able to strike effectively enough to get people into position to work his BJJ

I didn’t take that meaning from what he said. I read into it as him saying/meaning that “if” he were to catch Randy in a hold, he wouldn’t want to injure him. So he would probably lose because he would not apply himself as he would against someone who wasn’t his “Hero.” But, he did acknowledge that Randy could beat him. And I thought it was quite humble to be coming from Mir.

To the guys who think Mir gets arrogant right before a fight, do you think that might have something to do with the UFC putting him on-camera and telling him to say some stuff to hype up his upcoming fight?

Like it or not, the pre-fight interview is hardly an indication of the real fighter. That’s when they slip into character and try to sell a few tickets. It’s the post-fight and between-fight interviews where you get a small glimpse of the real person.

Just make sure you let your opponent know your hyping the fight otherwise you might take what you said as an insult especially if he can make you eat all the shit you just spoke LOL.

So, if Fedor signs somewhere for less money he’s a dick. But, athletes who take the most money every time are also dicks? I don’t get it. Frank said a couple months ago that Fedor would kick his ass…now that Fedor signs with the UFC’s #1 competitor Fedor sucks?….get of the UFC’s nuts Frank…we all know Fedor would knock your head off.

“Quit and go home”….lol, that’s funny.

How pitiful that a guy from the UFC with the “best fighter’s in the world” needs to always self-promote until he looks like an idiot. If he were one of the “best in the world”…there’d be no need to self-promote……ala Fedor.

by introvert on Sep 1, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s not what he said Intro. You’re blind hate for some people make you close your mind up to what they’re really saying.

I don’t think Mir said Fedor would beat him, if I remember that interview on MMA Live?? he said he would like to fight Fedor.

How is he self-promoting? He may have chased that girl down, but I think he wasn’t looking for an interview.

by UFC Champ on Sep 1, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He said that Fedor was the best HW in the world and that he didn’t think he could hang with Fedor. It was around the time that Fedor was going to fight AA and the interviewer asked his prediction (Fedor win), and who the best was…his answer was Fedor.

How can you explain Mir’s continual self-promotion, but claim that the UFC HW’s are the “best in the world”? …yet Fedor avoids all talk about himself as much as he can? The answer….Mir is a self-serving, not-so-humble, second class HW….Fedor is the best, knows it, and does need to say it…..period.

by introvert on Sep 1, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor is a great fighter introvert there is no question there but don’t get your panties tied in a knot when others believe he is not the best HW anymore. If Fedor would of signed with the UFC and won every fight there would be no debate same as if he lost you know it and I know it and that’s exactly why the UFC HW is better no would be argueing Rogers is the Best in the world and thats the truth.

Still think he’s a dick. the staph was the only reason he beat Nog because Mir’s boxing is not better than Nog’s. Rogan was merely saying how much better Nog looked and why he was poor last time. Not like Mir hasnt used excuses and stories after his fights to blame poor performances. Fuckin douche!!

Humble? HUMBLE? Are you fucking shitting me? The guy just gave an interview bragging about having STEEL PLATES put into the bodies of the men he dominates in the octagon. Yeah, that shit’s not cocky at all. And until Mir puts together a 30 FIGHT WIN STREAK (with one B.S. loss from a “cut” thrown in) criticizing Fedor’s claim that he has nothing to prove to anyone means fucking zero to me.

Frank Mir is a guy of average intelligence who, in his own delusional mind, thinks he’s way smarter and more interesting than he really is. Honest and to the point? Absolutely. Humble and free of arrogance? I don’t fucking think so.

AH u guys seems like u guys know everything. First mir beat nog fair and square. Is mir better at standup then nog i think so. Nog looked like shit his last 3 fights then he does good against coutore and now he is the almighty one now. Would nog beat mir 9 out of 10 times he might beat him 5 out of 10 times. Everyone here dogs on so many fighters. Why? These are the best fighters in the world right now and they hold my utmost respect. I agree with everything he said including the fedor thing. As long as u one of the best fighter in the world there is always something to prove. Its the challenge and to challenge yourself and push yourself. MMa is evolving and the heavyweight division is evolving. Is fedor skill enough to beat this young genetically gifted fighters I dont know. We seen what happen to torres. Bowles has skill and power and is young and killed him. That is what fedor has to prove that his skills and technique will prevail over genetics and lesser skill.

by desperus on Sep 1, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

how is it evolving? having a fighter that is incredibly huge and a freak of nature without a skill or even a brain as a champ? yeah right! and the so called clear cut contender is a part time mma fighter who just happens to be also big with no quality wins aside from a gonzaga??? i dnt even consider that quality

I agree with Mir that’s it’s gotta be disheartening when you beat someone legit and people make excuses, but it sounds like Nog’s “excuses” were actually valid, and I haven’t actually heard Nog make them for himself yet.

I am not a Frank Mir fan… That being said , I dont know if Big Nog looked any better saturday night.. I was with my buds and we were all talking about how good nog look in the couture fight. I said this may be a dumb question, but did he look good against a top heavyweight contender or did he look good against a 46 year old past contender.. I personally do not think Couture is a top ten heavyweight right now. I have not for a couple of years.. His work as defitnately not showd that as of late..He is 5 and 5 in is last ten fights with 3 losses coming at light heavyweight.. Couture has fought in 14 title fights.. When was the lst time he won 2 in row to earn one of them title shots. His name gets him title shots…That being said.. Frank Mir is very overrated as well. He has lost 3 of his last seven..I personally do not know how good any of the heavyweights are but these three maybe overrated..I said it…I will also say that believe that staph played a part in Nogs Loss to Mir

I never heard Nog bring up the staph thing until after others did.. Truth of the matter I do not see anything wrong with a man who spent seven days in the hospital just a few weeks before a fight using it as an excuse. It shows more guts by going in there and fighting and then making an excuse than it does pulling out of the fight because of a knee twitch or pulled muscles.. Man said I was in a hospital laid up sick and still not scared to fight..If the excuse is the truth is that severe than it really doesnt matter.. It really has Mir wondering how good he is…

by Nick on Sep 1, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Frank’s one of my favorite heavyweights, but he’s contradicting himself a bit here. At first he’s saying he thinks it’s sad and pathetic to say someone isnt fighting at 100% because of multiple injuries (Nog also had a torn ligament), yet at the same time says he wants to dodge a 46 year old Couture out of respect. I’m big on respect, BIG reason why I think Brock is an ass, but that sounds sad and pathetic to me. Rogan was being fair, he said no credit taken away from Mir, but he was telling the truth. One of Mir’s stupid friends must have said that shit.

Oh and Mir would not lose to Fedor, he would pick apart his horrible striking and not get stupid in there Arlovski was so close, he ruined a big oppurtunity for himself but it shows how sloppy Fedor is standing up. Mir would stay as smart and fast as usual.

Mir is butt hurt he will never accomplish anything close to what Fedor has

He talks about Nog and excuses but what is Nog to do when asked why he looked so different from what we are accustomed to? And he always gave Mir his due in that fight (which is unnecessary and simply diplomatic, I am sure Nog is confident he will crush him and that is probably why he didn’t pull out of the fight even in the condition he was in)

And what about Mir’s excuses in the past?

And as for those who sit behind the TV or keyboard? We are the fucking fans who pay their bills, buying product and PPV’s, and I would never say something like Forrest is an embarrasment and agree he has nothing to be embarrased about… but as a 49ers fan I can talk bad all day about the Cowboys and Tony Romo and they don’t cry about it… This isn’t the way to make fans…

fedor beat the crap out of big nog in every fight they had.. mir fought a nog that obviously wasnt the same but even if he was… can u really compare a fight where one fighter gets knocked out against a fight where a fighter just gets dominated from start to finish!! i think they way fedor beat him up for those fights it might of been just as bad. and if that is your best point to make in defense of frank mir being as good as fedor u have a weak argument.

by zack on Sep 1, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Everbody beats the crap out of big Nog that’s why he is a legend, few finish him. Tim Sylvia gave him the worst face pounding of all time and Big Nog took his head in the end. Fedor only has 3 quality wins over top opp. Nog twice and cro Cop. Both have had ups and downs and have not proven anything in the UFC. Get off Fedor’s N uuts and just admit that his fight choices frustrate even his biggest supporters.

fedor beat a bunch of blown up light heavyweights. a big heavyweight like lesner would own fedor.

by Conan the Barbarian on Sep 2, 2009 12:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nope, I hate the decisions Fedor/his team are making but I don’t let that diminish the fact that he’s still the top heavyweight out there due to the quality and quantity of the fighters he’s beaten. Many are not as well respected as they would have been had Fedor not beaten them in the first place!

To say he only beats blown up light heavyweights is retarded – he fights much better against the bigger guys than the smaller ones due to his speed and aggression. I doubt Sylvia, Arlovski, Hong Man Choi (his last 3 opponents), Heath Herring or Semmy Schilt could ever be called anything but heavyweights.

Lesnar is a different animal in many respects, and the best case for a “Super Heavyweight” category since most of the fit 6’3" sized fighters could easily come in at 225-230lb whereas he is simply bigger and stronger than even most of them.

To be honest I still think fighters like him and now even Todd Duffee are the best cases for some kind of HGH testing (if it were reliably available) since their sheer bulk and even facial features show signs of excess growth hormone (like the pituitary gland disorders of “giants” like Hong Man Choi for example) – overgrown jaw/chin/cheekbones and sheer skeletal size. They may be clean now but there’s nothing to say they didn’t spend half their lives on HGH (not the same as roids). Shane Carwin is huge – but his facial features are normal and his bulk obviously comes from weight training and muscle work – he will look small next to Lesnar due to his unnaturally large frame. Of course they could have just grown up on a lot of red meat, which, in America is full of growth hormones anyway… ;)

Just my opinion, but I think there’s something in it.

by Jimrod on Sep 2, 2009 3:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Northstar….you are exactly right and I don’t think Rogan was purposely trying to minimize Mir’s victory over Nog so much as it was to say there was a reason NOG looked like crap against Mir and for all the fans that thought he was done…..look out….he’s still got game. Mind you, NOG wasn’t the one bringing this up (unless asked) but anyone who saw the fight knows that NOG was not your typical NOG performance just like BJ’s performance against GSP wasn’t nearly his best (totally flat in that fight) and Gina was not at her best against Cyborg (choke job due to pressure). Yes, NOG always takes some punishment in his fights but come on….the guy who fought MIR was a corpse.

So Frank’s ego got hurt because it was implied that NOG wasn’t at full force. Not even close Frank. I really wish you would have fought the NOG that just beat Randy. It would have been a TOTALLY different fight I think.

The facts are Mir has no power on the feet and mentally wilts when a opponent starts to ground and pound him. Evidence is the Brandon Vera,Ian Freeman and Brock Lesner matches, all three contest Mir curled up in a ball and waited for a ref stoppage.

I think after Mir said “I didn’t get to see the fight” he should have shut up then. Anytime ‘I didn’t see…..but I heard’ starts a sentence it’s usually followed up with some stupid shit. Having your losses approach double digits isn’t good either. He’s coming down with Charles Barkley syndrome where you have to keep saying stupid shit in the media to keep your name in the forefront otherwise he’d disappear into obscurity. I would never wish it on them, but if one of his kids ever almost dies of staph I’d like to see how pathetic he thinks it is then.
