Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: Fighting Brock Lesnar would be 'awesome'

Props: MMAWeekly
Quoteworthy:
"I like big fights like that. It would be my pleasure, but if they gave me a title shot, it would be awesome. I have more experience than (Lesnar). That's a big advantage I have. A lot of jiu-jitsu and good standing up, make him tired man, move around, move around. When I get his timing, hit him with a good right hand and box him, box him and get him tired. I've been in there a long time. I can see what's going on. If he goes on the top into my guard, I can play with him. Let's see, let's see what is going to happen."
UFC heavyweight contender Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira breaks down a possible future bout against current champion Brock Lesnar. "Minotauro" reinserted himself into the title picture with a thrilling three round victory over Randy Couture at UFC 102 on August 29 in Portland. That victory helped erase the memories of a "half-dead" Nogueira getting trounced by a suddenly pugilistic Frank Mir back at UFC 92. Does a reborn Big Nog still have the ability to finish off the major players in his division? Or will bruising behemoths like Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar turn him into Brazilian confetti?

For sure, Nog would probably get Rocked by a Brock mitt and catch him in a triangle on the way in to pound his face in.
True Ol skool Big Nog is back. Hopefully long enough to clean house fight fedor once more and retire healthy

Brock would do much the same to NOG as he did Mir I was impressed with NOG’s stand up it was alway’s decent but I didn’t think he would get the better of Couture. When it comes to facing Brock though he doesn`t have the size or strength needed to grapple with Brock on the ground or feet he said he would make Brock tired LOL I donèt think so infact the exact opposite would happen if NOG could even last that long Brockès endurance is great and he is about fifty pounds heavier than Couture. On the other hand NOG has the experience and skill to surprise with a JJ move that is just as dangerous as a Carwin punch being the higher rated fighter I would prefer NOG over Carwin as a fight but Im not sure NOG would have much success against a skilled wrestler as athletic and big as Brock.

What? That has to be the most incoherent post I have ever read. Not to be the grammar nazi, but please learn to use punctuation.

Couture started to wear on Brock. The possibilty is there that he could wear on him. Nog is a much stronger BJJ fighter then Mir. Nog is also the ultimate chess player when it comes to his BJJ. At his best he is setting up submissions that are 3 and 4 transitions away. It is all about baiting. Lesnars inexperience can play a huge factor when going in against somebody with Nogs big show experience. His boxing is super crisp, and he also has his black belt in Judo. He is most defintely the best HW BJJ guy and arguably one of the best BJJ guys in MMA period. Could everything I say end up being negated by the evolutionary faux pas that is Brock, maybe-even likely. Nog does have the tools though that could easily end up getting Brock in trouble.

I read his post no problem. Don’t agree with some of it, but it was not incoherent.

I’ve been saying it for a while that NOG and Brock is the only other fight other fight that interests me with Brock other than Carwin and only if Nog looked good against Couture… and he did!!!!! This is going to be sweet!

It would be good but does he deserve it yet? I think he should fight the winner of Kongo and Mir. Yes Mir was getting his ass handed to him in first fight BUT he won. It should set a rubber match should he beat Nog again.
by thetuf75 on Aug 31, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah he focking deserves it! He should still be UFC champion if he wasnt on his death bed when he fought Mir. He deserves an instant title shot or an immediate rematch with Mir!

I want nothing but for Nog to outbox and smash mir then sub Lesnar and retire into the sunset. An all time great and a true MMA Hall of Famer (You all know that in terms of greatness Randy doesn’t come close, sure he fought great fighters and had some success but his legend is solely built on him fighting top guys consistently and winning while underestimated not from consistently beating top guys.)
In my book only Fedor, Nog, Hughes, and Anderson have resumes to be in a true MMA hall of fame with GSP on the cusp.

If Lesnar beats Carwin, I’d prefer Nog get the next shot. Looking at the cast of contenders, and assuming Carwin’s inexperience will be exposed, Nog is the logical choice. While the scenario of a Nog re-match with Mir makes some sense (assuming Mir beats Congo-50/50)…that process takes too much time and Lesnar will need another title defense. If Nog is occupied or unavailable, I don’t see another HW worthy of a title shot just yet. Despite the loss to Mir, Nog’s body of work trumps any other option.

How does a guy with 4-1 record expose a guy with 10-0 record’s inexpierence?
by Bryan139 on Sep 1, 2009 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with John G on this one. Nog shouldn’t have even fought Mir when he did. He was clearly unhealthy, but with it being built up throughout the show, and Nog just being Nog and not wanted to make excuses, he fought him anyway. If it wasn’t the end of the show fight, I think it would have been postponed. That being said. I see Nog defeating Brock by armbar. I think Brock will rock him, come in for the kill, swing them lunchboxes, and Nog will look bloody and out of it right before he swings his legs and has Joe Rogan screaming “That is deep!!! Brock is in big trouble Mike!!”
by getrawbc on Sep 1, 2009 7:04 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Nog should fight winner of Mir and Kongo. The winner of that should get shot at Brock. Mir won the first fight regardless of getting beat up, he won. He deserves rubber match if he can beat Kongo and Nog

Lets not have Brock fighting Murr again before he gets through Carwin and Frank survives Kongo.

And Mir better end up fighting Silva… non of this waiting til it’s 6 years later and hope we can still do it and the fans will look forwad to it horse shat.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 1, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Brock doesn’t need to fight Murr again. He was crushing the first time before Il Moustache handed him that gift. Then Brock crushed him again and finished the job. They have fought for a total of about 10 minutes with Murr controlling about 5 seconds.

I disagree…I say give Nogueira the next shot after Carwin and let Mir (if he can even beat Kongo)fight the winner of Cain Velasquez/Ben Rothwell. The winner of that fight would get the next shot after Carwin and Nogueira.

I find myself doing the very same thing. That is what happened with Bisping. Ohh and when he finally was KO’d by Hendo, I was happier then a pig in shyte! So I could only hope that when the right David comes along, Goliath will fall just as hard, and give me another great mma memory!

I know Nog can beat Lesnar, he would be a better challenge then Randy and Frank.. Nog looked good against Randy, he needs to put in some serious work on his head movement though, Anderson should be able to help him out..

brock dropped randy with a short shot nog rocked him with a big one who got the tko ?? brock did , brock would crush nog,, not taking anything from nog but if brock can survive carwins heavy hands he is gonna be champ for a long long time
by TheDragon on Aug 31, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions
You might be right. It looked like Nog was back last night and if he is, it is very possible that Nog can beat him. A guy that can take punishment to take the submission. And Nog has great submissions. However, in light of what just happened to Frank Mir, it might be the key to get Brock on his back and I think Carwin might be the man to do that. Combine that with Carwins power and its possible to see a TKO. But I could just as easily see Brock taking down Carwin. Hmmm.
by RyanHobbs on Sep 1, 2009 2:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Nog’s taken one too many beatings….not as durable as he used to be. Brock would beat him with his size and ground and pound….shane carwin has the best chance out of anyone to beat him.
by Jakizzle on Aug 31, 2009 8:38 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t think Nog wants to be on bottom with Lesnar. Just like Demian Maia didn’t want to throw a head kick to Nate the Great. Just like Bisping didn’t want to circle to his left. Just like Jardine didn’t want to twist his nipple, the good luck wore off.
by crazyeddie on Aug 31, 2009 8:38 PM EDT reply actions
I think NOG SHOULD GET the next TITLE SHOT after CArwin… with the win over Randy he proved many including me, wrong. he has a lot left and I think A fight with Brock could give him a chance to get the belt back. He has some major skills that could give brock trouble. BUt at this point if Brock doesnt get caught in a submission by his own fault i dont c any one beating him. However a Healthy NOG could Be his strongest test to date. We all know CArwin aint doin shit.. I compare this fight to GSP vs Alves.. both have similar skills but GSP is just better at everything just as brock is better than CArwin at everything ( even punching power) KO and couple cans does not mean anything MR CArwin… when u could generate BROCK LESNAR power from the craziest positions then we can talk EX: frank MIR vs BRock lAst fight. FRANK MIR I DonT WANA C U FIGHT IN THE TOP ANYMORE… JUS FIGHT ANDERSON SO HE CUD PUT U IN UR PLACE u best win was against TIM “THE BIG DOOF” SYLVIA

Nog and Couture fight, one wins, one loses. Now, Nog is looking like a match up for Brock. LOL. Dana better not okay that matchup, or else Dana starts to look like Don King by hyping bs fights. There are plenty of young heavies out there to go after Brock. Against Brock,Couture was kayoed, Nog may have had edge when he was younger, but Brock will probably smash like Mir II.
Dana is protecting Brock with this bs.

by D-RawK on Aug 31, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions
You’re comparing Brock to Bob Sapp?
Nog looked good and all, but Brock could take him down whenever he wanted to, and do to him what he did to Mir. That much of a size difference is hard to overcome.
I will also say I think Mir hits harder than Nog. Give Nog another fight before throwing him to the Lesnar.

by shitleTOT.com on Aug 31, 2009 9:13 PM EDT reply actions
Nog I think should be next I’ll tell u this, UFC 102 sucked accross the board. The only reason where not talking about that is because the main event was so good. I think Lesner will be too much for nog. those hands are so f’ in big.
by peter dilorenzo on Aug 31, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions
Cmon get real…Brock would destroy Nog. Way too much power, speed and size. Plus Nog didn’t earn a shot yet…its not like he KO’d or submitted Couture. I say if Duffee wants a big name, throw him in with Nog…let’s see what happens.
by Slam City on Aug 31, 2009 9:44 PM EDT reply actions
So Nog doesn’t deserve a title shot, but Duffee has earned a fight with Nog? That’s some backwards thinking. Nog knocks off Couture in maybe the fight of the year and the UFC’s going to reward him by giving him a fight with Duffee? Nah…

Everyone saying all that stuff about Big Nog fighting Brock but don´t forget that Carwin is his way.
The most important … It´s time to create a new division. Superheavyweight division.
by ThiagO on Aug 31, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions
nog traded punches with randy for an entire round. i don’t see him doing that with lesner. forget about a takedown. lesner by tko. people need to stop with this creating a superheavyweight division talk. nobody bitched when "big tim sylvia " had to cut to make weight. other fighters don’t seem scared to fight brock, so you guys don’t have to be scared for them either.
by Conan the Barbarian on Aug 31, 2009 10:38 PM EDT reply actions
I agree with you Conan. Not because I think Brock is unstoppable though. I’m a Nog fan but his best days are behind him. Randy tagged him again and again, but just didn’t have the power to drop Nog. Nog looked pretty slow with his standup.
Jiu jitsu wise though he’s still great. But he’s not on the level that he was when he dominated Pride

WEll for me, Minotauro’s boxing looked like he was boxing in Pride. Well, crisper[by a whole lot] than the Mir fight…

If cro cop wins, does a fight with nog and cro cop make sense? I think cro cop winning gives them lots of options since they can match him up with couture, nog, even cain. Also, dos santos is still young and up and coming so a loss woldnt really hurt him super bad.

lesner has room for alot of improvement!!!! nog isn’t going to get any better. lesner has nasty power and nasty wrestling. he will be as dominate as matt hughes was, except he can knock mother fu*#%rs out!!

I dunno about this. Nog took a lot of shots to the face from Sylvia. Those same shots from Brock would rattle the most hardy Nog.
That said I do believe that he (Nog) could pull it off. I’d love to see that fight.

i dont know what you mean lester the moron. nog dominated randy more than brock did. if brock didnt land that shot he would of lost the fight verse randy. his gas tank was practically empty. really i wasnt sure if nog could beat lesnar but after watching lesnar vs. randy, if lesnar could not control randy on his back no way will he be able to nullify nogs jiu jitsu. i dont think he will knock him out either he is going to gas and get submitted.

I’m a big a Nog fan as there is but sorry no way that Nog is going to beat Brock. He is not going to KO him, which Nog says. So his plan is to wear him down. Nog really needs to reconsider this. Brock WILL take him down at will. As Brock showed against Mir II, he now has the skills to neutralise BJJ using positioning and hip control.
Just in case Brock does not TKO, once Brock has Nog pinned up against the cage he will unload with brutal G&P.
This fight might make it past the third round but I see Brock finishing it in the 2nd or 3rd.

I am a huge Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fan. I think he could stand a chance against Lesnar. The only reason Mir lost is because he got cocky (because he beat Lesnar the first time, easily, I will add)he thought he was going to stand their and trade punches with someone that size.LOL. Nogueira is excellent at ju jitsu, he is smarty enough and humble enough to know that he cannot trade punches with Lesnar, he will take it to the ground. My father was a Green Beret in the military, I was always so jealous that my siblings got MMA and all i got is what my father taught me. Do you know, I have never had my ass handed to me in a fight but my siblings have and some of them had black belts. It stand “Never Count Big Nog Out” I have faithin him and if you all were truly fans, neither were you. Just so you know I am five feet nothing and female and have taken on men over 6 feet tall and won. believe me they did not take pity on me, I have a broken nose, broken ribs, and both knees with hyper extended injuries to them. I won and all of that was training by a Green Beret. These were wrestlers that I took on , which I believe is what Lesnar’s training is all about. He has fire power I will give him that but if he gets someone in the ring that is as humble as Nog is, he needs to watch out. The only reason Mir beat Nog is because Nog had a staff infection but would not back ouot of the fight.
