UFC Quick Quote: Nate Marquardt 'excited' by his 'highlight reel finish'

"I had watched tape on him and kind of noticed how he telegraphed when he kicks and I have a lot of counters for kicks and stuff. I hurt my ankle a couple of weeks ago and I was working with my buddy Dwayne and I asked him 'How do I counter this if I can't do my normal stuff?' He told me 'Just step in and throw an overhand right as he kicks.' It was crazy how it worked so easily. This was a highlight reel finish and I'm very excited."
--Surging UFC middleweight contender Nate Marquardt talks post-fight about finishing jiu-jitsu phenom Demian Maia just 22 seconds into their 185-pound affair at UFC 102 last Saturday night. "The Great" may have pushed himself to the top of a very short list of potential candidates looking to challenge current division deity Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Does Marquardt go right to the top? Or will he be paired up with Dan Henderson for (yet another) middleweight number-one contender bout? Paging Joe Silva...

Marquardt vs Silva for the title… and Hendo vs Wanderlei 3 for the # 1 contender

Im down with that scenario Ceasar! and have Maia fight either: Okami, Akiyama or the winner of Bisping/Kang!
by john G on Aug 30, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Interestingly, the fight between Bisping and Kang hasn’t been confirmed yet.
When you consider Maia didn’t take too much damage (sure he got shut down but he’ll live) he could deffinately be ready to fight in november.
The UFC backed both Bisping and Maia as (Dana’s words) “The future of the middleweight division” both of them got KO’d by the “old guard” and were shown to be not at there level
A match up between them lets the UFC save at least one of there poster boys as it stands now they both have a long way to go and have a lot to prove before they can be considered contenders again.
If they both fight in november then at least the winner of that match would still be up there.
just sayin’

Damn that I was glad that my boy made you eat crow last night NNR and johnny boy. 1 punch that all what it takes to kill a 1 dimensional fighter. Hope that you guys learn your lesson. I have no interest to see Nate getting shift again of his title shot by fighting Hendo next. I would love to see that fight but not right away. For once they have 2 top contenders in the MW division in a long time, maybe even 4 with Belfort and Wand. So no need to eliminated them right away with fights against each others to have only 1 guy at the end, and put the division with no contenders after the next title defence. That would sux bad.

Flash Ko doesn’t prove anything alpha. It just means that like all fighters he has a bad habits not surprisingly Jackson Camp picked up on it. 1 punch is all it takes to kill all fighters period. Before that he was winning the standup exchanges. I still say he would have subbed him if the fight had gone further than 20 secs.
At least he won’t be too injured or too busy training for Andy to miss ADCC!!!

Wand sucks if he weren’t a big name he’d be cut already. I can honestly say I don’t know if I’d even take him over some1 like McFedries. He’d probably even lose to Bisping.

Man if anyhting they should have marquardt vs wanderlei not henderson vs wandy ,just look what nate did to wanderleis training partner…..and i kjnow that was a sweet ko and everything…..but he wasnt out cold and the bisping ko will never leave my mind EVER….. " if you want sum1 to go kick andersons butt, thats me" anderson makes a funny face and laughes at marquardt great stuff lol

WOW NNR is whining like a little bitch becuase he predicted wrong. man up mate
by Dingo on Aug 30, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions
frosnt1, even against McFedries? McFedries would demolish him… Drew is a very good stand up fighter and that’s were all Wanderlei fights take place
by RoBerto on Aug 30, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, better accept the fact that Maia a.k.a.“Royce Gracie 2.0” hasn’t got any hands in the striking department so a scenario like this really isn’t surprising to us. We all know how big and powerful Nate is, right?
by The Negation on Aug 30, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Depends really on how soon they want Silva to defend the title. After a non-title bout with Forrest, I feel he really should defend the belt in his next fight, and he probably wouldn’t want to sit and wait for Henderson and Marquardt to match up. Between the two, I feel Henderson is more deserving, so Marquardt can either sit and wait for the next shot, or fight someone else in the meantime. Winner of Okami/Sonnen maybe?
by Jase on Aug 30, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions
feed marquardt to the wolves. since he defeated maia so easily, i say give him a match with maia’s striking coach. GIVE WANDERLEI a shot at revenge.
by bradpittfightclub on Aug 30, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
According to mmajunkie, Silva’s camp wants Marquardt/Henderson in a #1 contender’s match and says Silva is willing to wait for that, but that Henderson’s only interested in fighting Anderson at 185, and if he doesn’t get that fight next, he might return to 205.
by Jase on Aug 30, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Damn man I really wanted Maia to pull off a sub , suck how early itended hopefully he learns from that.
I wanna watch Nate againts henderson for number 1 contender the both deserve it but let’s see who wants it more, that’s a war in the making.
by Tower on Aug 30, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions
war nate the great knew he had this fight in the bag, but i figured it would be a lot longer, shows how overated maia was
by Jared on Aug 30, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions
I predicted Nate to win, but wanted to see a war. Actually, that was probably the fight I was most excited for last night and it was over in 1 punch! Anyone else disappointed??
by allamerican on Aug 30, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions
Gutted about Maia, he made a silly mistake and got punished badly by Nate, though full credit to Nate he timed that punch perfectly and then showed great sportsmanship by not attacking his downed opponent, some bigger names could learn a thing or two from Nate in sportsmanship.
Nate-Hendo makes the most sense to me, both are coming off brutal KO wins over top contenders but it’s pointless having Andy rematch both of them so lets see who wants it more and has improved the most since their defeats to Silva. Plus that would allow Andy to have another fight at LHW or even HW whilst the MW title contendership is resolved.
As for Maia I’d like to see him fight Bisping at 105 in the co-main event. Demian has wanted this fight for a while and it would be great to see him submit Bisping in Manchester, he doesn’t havet to worry about Mike’s punching power and he should be able to get the fight to the ground. This would give him a win over a top contender and put him right back in the mix at the top of the 185 division. Hopefully Demain will learn from his mistakes in this fight and come back a better fighter.
However, despite my man Maia getting smashed I was still very happy with the card, other than the Vera-Kris fight all of the fights on the main card were exciting. Randy-Nog is a FOTY contender and it was great to see Big Nog back to his best, Thiago gave Jardine yet another highlight reel KO loss, I did say that he was glass jawed and Leben-Rosholt was decent although I was surprised that the ref didn’t notice the tap and allowed Jake to choke out Chris. Leben is probabaly on his way out now, he looked all at sea in the stand-up, relying completely on his big left hand and doing nothing when he ended up on his back, easily giving Rosholt side control.
One other thing, the mighty Wire have finally won a trophy, as we won the Challenge Cup for the first time in 35 years. Warrington were superb and Saturday ended up being one of the highlights of my life, so having a few celebratory drinks and watching an excellent UFC card were a bonus.

I was very happy to see Nate not deliver a few extra unwarranted shots after he realized Maia was out. Guys should start getting fined and suspended for pummelling guys that are already unconcious. Nate deserves the shot against Anderson more so than Hendo.
by Spyder on Aug 30, 2009 10:52 AM EDT reply actions
I agree. That was presence of mind mixed with pure class.
by split decision on Aug 30, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
Agree, although I’ve seen guys try to do that and end up losing the fight because of how quick some guys recover. Sometimes you have to jump on and finish him. Sometimes it goes overboard with four or five unanswered blows to a guy who is obviously out cold. Definitely shows class on Nate’s part though.
by wAyNe on Aug 30, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Nate is definitely a class act, but I also think he was concerned about hitting Maia in the back of the head, since Maia was facing away from him.
by CL on Aug 30, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
All to often guys recover really fast. It happened at the last WEC. I forgot but who it was the guy let up when he thought Leonard Garcia was asleep, Garcia recovered before the ref saw and lost the fight. If Damien recovered a second earlier Marquardt would have been in a whole other battle. As crappy as it maybe it is the refs job. to stop the fight. A lot of people have great recovery and maybe out on the way down and recovered by the time they hit the mat. Look at Randy, his legs were out completely and he was fine by the time he hit the canvas. It is part of the sport, fihgters know that stepping into the ring. That is why this sport is what it is, if you back off it would be boxing, lets give them an 8 count while we are at it.
by Da Monkey on Aug 30, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I told you so.
I said the Maia hype would die and here we are, he got brutalized by The Great just as i expected.
Marquardt should get the rematch straigh away, he’s got a much better chance than Hendo.
WAR MARQUARDT!
by Lester The Pimp on Aug 30, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions
Maia got smoked. I’d actually love to see the Marquardt/ Hendo fight before they go for the title. They both had their shots so it’d be nice to see a clear cut winner between the two to determine who gets the title shot. In the mean time lets see Silva/Vera.
by tiger_style on Aug 30, 2009 11:31 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah, there’s about zero point for that. At this stage n the game, Silva should only be fighting the top dogs in his 205 fights, and Vera ain’t that. Sure he won his fight against Soszynski, but that’s also his biggest win at LHW to date, which should tell people something.
by Jase on Aug 30, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he was referring to THIAGO Silva vs. Vera.
by pancake head on Aug 30, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Ha, you’re probably right. Can’t say I’m too enthused with that match-up either though.
by Jase on Aug 30, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I was sad to see Demian go down like that, but that definitely was a nice highlight reel KO.
by shitleTOT.com on Aug 30, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions
Nate is just a pure beast and I know im in the Minority here but i have stated in the past that I really think The Great can dethrone Anderson. Yes i know their first bout wasnt all the impressive on Nate’s side. But since that fight his training and how much he has evolved has been insane. He is a huge 185’er and is very well diversed. Im a big Hendo fan too, so if they have to fight that will really be shitty. But I think Nate is the guy to finally beat the cocky spider. Anderson used to be pretty respectful and i used to like him
by See What Had Happend Was !!!! on Aug 30, 2009 11:59 AM EDT reply actions
I’m not big on Hendo/Marquardt, I think Hendo should just get the next shot. But they’re saying Silva’s camp wants to see that fight for #1 contender, and that he’s willing to wait for that to sort itself out.
by Jase on Aug 30, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I think a Hendo/Nate fight would be fun to watch but given the lack of competition for Anderson I don’t want either of these guys to eliminate the other. I don’t care which one gets their shot at Silva first but in the meantime feed the other a can so that when/if Silva defeats them there is still a chance for the other to fight Silva. These are the only two in the division I see having any chance at all against Silva.
by Greggo on Aug 30, 2009 12:16 PM EDT reply actions
Hendo vs nate would definitely show who the number one contender is, but it would also put the middle weight title on hold for a long time. I think they should have ando fight hendo and then nate fight the winner of that one.
by nathan on Aug 30, 2009 2:25 PM EDT reply actions
id rather see hendo vs marquart and let anderson fight another 205er.
