UFC 102 results from last night and post-fight discussion

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) just put a ribbon on its first-ever trip to Portland, Ore., tonight (Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009) from the Rose Garden Arena.

The UFC 102 main event between "legendary" participants Randy "The Natural" Couture and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira was billed as a "battle for the ages."

Couldn't have said it better myself -- what an epic battle!

Couture, 46-years-young, survived an early knockdown and submission scare to throw leather with his Brazilian counterpart for basically three straight minutes. It was a thrilling exchange.

And it was more of the same to start the second, but Couture short-circuited the action with a takedown, followed up by ground and pound.

Nogueira, however, switched things up fast with a quick reversal into full mount. From that point on it appeared that "Big Nog" began to takeover ... much to the chagrin of Couture's hometown crowd.

In the third round, Nogueira scored an early knockdown and appeared to be on his way toward victory by dominating "The Natural" with strikes. The referee in charge of the action had to be itching to stop the bout.

But then then "Captain America" pulled another trick out of his timeless playbook and reversed Nogueira, giving everyone hope that he would once again claim victory from the clutches of defeat.

Not this time.

Nogueira went on to win a unanimous decision; however, it was one hell of an exciting fight. It certainly made the case once again for five-round non-title fights. One for the ages, indeed.

Two more rounds would have made this an instant classic ... if it isn't already.

Star-divide

Keith Jardine and Thiago Silva hooked 'em up in a 205-pound slugfest that both fighters promised would not last long.

They kept that promise.

"The Dean of Mean" came out swinging, landing a heavy leg kick in the opening seconds of the first frame. He appeared to be the aggressor and set a powerful pace.

But Silva stayed calm and waited for an opening. He found it with a left hook as he retreated, which put Jardine on his butt. Silva followed it up with a series of strikes from the top that eventually had Jardine twitching on the canvas.

It was a mirror image of the knockout loss to another Silva, Wanderlei.

Jardine awoke from his early slumber shortly thereafter; however, not before Silva had claimed brutal victory -- trademark throat slash and all.

Silva is on his way back toward re-establishing himself as a top contender in the division. Meanwhile, Jardine has to somehow figure out a way to win ... and keep winning.

Heavy-handed Chris Leben returned from a nine-month suspension to take on world-class collegiate wrestling sensation Jake Rosholt in a middleweight affair. "The Crippler" expressed his disdain for "lay and pray" fighters, preferring instead to keep things upright and bang it out.

So it came as quite a surprise when Leben scored the first takedown of the night.

The trend did not continue for the rest of the fight -- it was up and down up all the way to the third round. Rosholt -- who has demonstrated terrible stand up in the past -- was able to hold his own in all facets of the game, including submission defense, until that time.

Losing on the unofficial MMAmania scorecard, he needed to a strong performance in the final frame to register his first win inside the Octagon. And he did just that, locking-in a surprising arm triangle choke that put Leben to sleep ... literally.

Leben wanted to tap, but appeared to have second thoughts midway through his journey out and instead took a nap. It was typical Leben and atypical Rosholt.

Solid fight with a nice twist.

In a middleweight match up that had potential number one contender implications on the line, Nate Marquardt left little room for controversy when he flattened undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist Demian Maia with a fight-ending punch square on button just 22 seconds into the first round.

It was clear before the fight even started that Marquardt wanted to keep the fight standing and Maia didn't. He made sure it never got that far.

Marquardt -- who already has a loss on his record to reigning champion Anderson Silva on his record -- certainly made a statement tonight that he's on his way back for another bite at the Brazilian apple.

However, with Dan Henderson waiting in the wings, he'll either have to fight another eliminator match against him or keep busy while "Hollywood" gets a crack at Silva first.

We'll see soon enough.

In the meantime, Maia might want to think about testing the waters at welterweight -- he's a small 185-pound fighter. If tonight is any indication, perhaps too small.

Krzysztof "Kimura" Soszynski stepped up on short notice to take a very dangerous fight against former heavyweight Brandon Vera in a light heavyweight attraction in the opening fight of the main card.

He was riding high on a six-fight win streak. It all came to an end tonight.

"The Truth" -- a Muay Thai and kickboxing specialist -- kept the action just where he wanted it (standing) for most of the bout. In fact, despite Soszynski's intermittent efforts, it was Vera who registered the only real takedown during the 15-minute bout.

Vera kept his distance and, for the most part, picked Soszynski apart, switching stances and avoiding the looping punches of the "Polish Experiment." He appeared to be the superior fighter and the judges agreed, awarding him with a unanimous decision win.

Perhaps it was just too much too soon for Soszynski -- it was his third fight in five months. Or, he was simply outclassed by a much more talented Vera. Regardless, Vera continues his rise up the 205-pound ladder and Soszynski heads back to the drawing board.

Only time will tell how long he stays there.

That’s enough from us — now it’s your turn to discuss "Couture vs. Nogueira" in the comments section below. Sound off, Maniacs. Let’s hear what you have to say.

OK here is the day after the event when everyone hops on and off fighters bandwagons (sickening). After 90% of this site wrote Nogueira off, and left him for dead…A legendary performances and by far the best mma fight of 2009 so far. I hope it was as sweet for the 10% of Nog’s Ride or Die fans, as it was for me. We believed in Big nOg and knew what he brought to the table. I feel vindicated after RANTING about how Nog would whoop Randy’s ass and was without a doubt the much better heavyweight legend for about 7 years now….and FINALLY. The Truth has set me free! Nogueira looked good enough to beat anyone last night! I CAN ONLY PRAY THAT THEY SCRATCH THE KONGO?MIR FIGHT AND GIVE NOG A REMATCH AGAINST THAT OVERRATED EGOMANIAC MIR!!!

Randy is one of the most over rated heavyweights in history, but Props to him for coming to fight, but I will say that I feel that the referee gave Randy too many opportunities too recover. I thought he was OUT in the 2nd (i believe)..but whatever, it gave me more minutes to watch a legendary instant classic.

Im almost afraid to scroll down the rest of the thread and read this post because TODAY NOg is EVERYONE’s favorite fighter, but before yesterday he has been completely disrespected by 90% of you! Shame on you guys!!!!!!!

Mother-FOCKIN WAR BIG NOG!!!!!!!!

I agree John. Randy was out!

I agree if by good enough to beat anyone you mean that he looked like Fedor would annihilate him…again. About Couture being overrated tho ya that’s def true.

Truly amazing main event. You couldn’t have asked for more (well maybe a couple more rounds!) as they both put on a truly epic effort that made me take back my opinion that this fight wouldn’t have been as good as if it happened 5 years ago when they should have first faced off. Hats off to both of them and a great win for nog. Although their definitely was no loser in this one.

All round great card. Shame about Maia vs Marquardt. I feel we were cheated out of a potentially awesome fight because of a mistake on Maia’s part. Oh well…sh!t happens and Maia will learn a lot about his striking from it.

P.S. Todd Duffee looks like a beast too. If he carries on we could have some monsters at the top of the HW weight limit in time to come!

by Ca$z on Aug 30, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ya we sure are getting true heavyweights another couple years and they’ll have to make a cruiserweight at around 235 I think would be good!!!!

by Nor Cal Mexican (formely Philicutioner) on Aug 30, 2009 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Loved the whole thing!!! Couldn’t have been happier with Big Nog/Couture, unless Nog would’ve submitted him. But the fact that he pretty much whooped Randy was a rather nice touch anyway. Ca$z, Duffee definitely looked the Beast, but his opponent started off the fight with his guard at his waist…….begged to be KO’ed IMO. Only result that surprised me was Leben getting submitted in the 3rd. Shame on that ref for not recognizing such a ridiculously obvious tap.

Strange things: when they introduced Couture and Nog….I was one of maybe, and I mean maybe, 5 people who even clapped and cheered. They show Lesnar’s face and the place erupted in boos. I walk to my car and listen as a bunch of guys were stunned about Randy as if they had never even considered Nog a threat, much less a favorite in that fight.

by chefdaddy on Aug 30, 2009 2:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Same thing happened at the bar i was watching. I was literally the only person cheering for Nog but that didn’t stop me from gettin loud. Some of the guys had Couture up 2-0 going into the second so i bet them 10 bucks for a clean UD sweep for Nog. I don’t know what was better the looks on their faces or the 10 bucks+my parlay hittin big!

by NameNotRequired on Aug 30, 2009 3:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the weigh in said it all, nog looked in the best shape ever and looked mean… while randy was still the same undersized HW who looked like hes at boy scout camp instead of about to fight one of the best HW’s ever… shoulda bet!

Vera v. Krzys – I’ve never seen anyone win before without knowing exactly what they did to win until Vera. Nevertheless, it was more than what Krzys did…d@mn that was a lame fight.

Rosholt v. Leben – I knew Leben would get tooled. Does he do anything different in his fighting today than what we saw from him on season 1 of TUF?

Marquardt v. Maia – That was classy of Marq to not keep pounding on Maia when he saw he was knocked out (cough…dan henderson…cough). Marq got himself a new fan right here.

Silva v. Jardine – HAHAHAHAHAHA what do you have to say about that title shot now Jardine?? Of course the UFC wants to market you!!! You get knocked out in classic fashion over and over again…that’ll look great on other fighter’s hightlight reel’s!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

Nogueira v. Couture – props to both those guys. Classic fight between two legends. I was actually more interested in the prospect of Nogueira fighting Brock Lesnar (Lesnar’s lack of BJJ could be exploited)than Randy again anyway, so it all worked out.

by RedDog on Aug 30, 2009 4:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

btw, why the fuck was Gabriel Gonzaga not televised????

by RedDog on Aug 30, 2009 4:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear ya Brendan.

I really should have bet. I was so close to going Nog – Vera – Marquardt -Duffy – but like a schmo I got busy with friends and didn’t pull the trigger. Crap.

What a great card though. I loved the whole thing.
Jardine is now officially a gate keeper at LHW.
Time to set up Houston Alexander vs Jardine II. Thiago
and Vera should tie up next. Give Nog the next shot after Lesnar v Carwin – he’s primed up – ready to go.

The only let down was Nate’s KO punch. Not that it wasn’t spectacular I just wanted to see him and Maia go back and forth. I missed the live punch because someone was talking to me.

by Big Zino on Aug 30, 2009 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just shows how overated maia was, his ground game is still probably the best in mma but as everyone knows he has no standup

by Jared on Aug 30, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can’t say Maia has no standup just because he got caught. He got countered and hit right on the button. That’s what happens when you fight a good striker. Pro boxers have been knocked out in the first round; doesn’t mean they aren’t good strikers it just means they got caught.

If he had thrown crap shit strikes and got countered for an entire round or two and then KO’d you could say he’s a terrible striker but he just got caught early (which could happen to anyone).

by Kevin Geary on Aug 30, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually, houston vs jardine 2 would be a great way to keep jardine in the spotlight.

All i now is I won a TON of money last night!
I bet BIg on: NOG, DUFFEE, Vera
Bet Modest on: Russow, Gabe, Silva, Rosholt, Maia

I had a 5 fighter parlay for $10 that would have won me over 500. I had Nog, Silva,Rosholt,Vera, Maia….SO PISSED I DIDNT WIN IT!!!!

i was truly on FIRE LAST NIGHT, and the sweet part was 4 of my friends that dont really know the sport, bet on who I bet, so not ony did I win a nice amount of money, but i put some money in 4 of my good friends pockets…and NOG LOOKED AMAZING> Couldnt have had a better nighth!

by john G on Aug 30, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin G – you’ll see it’s gonna get ridiculous about the maia thing around here. Everyone is either gonna be on the no standup or no chin bandwagon. He got caught literally while standing on one heel flush on the chin. That fight tells us nothing except for setting up Hendo-Marqy. What made it interesting is that if Maia would have won, it would have been someone with a shot at winning the belt and someone who’s never fought for the title. In the cases of hendo and Marqy, they’ll be able to stay in there with him longer simply cause they have more tools and are probly more durable but they won’t win period (no gettin caught, no lnp, etc…).

by NameNotRequired on Aug 30, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

@RedDog:

They didnt televise the Gonzaga fight because the very 1st strike of the fight was Gabe throwing an inside leg kick that missed its mark & ended as a nasty groin kick….and I mean NASTY. Chris Tuscherer (sp?) was hurt so bad he started throwing up. He couldnt even stand afterwards. But Chris is one tough SOB because he managed to pull himself together after the 5 minute rest period and continue the fight. Props to him but Gabe put a good old fashioned azz whuppin on that kid. He shoulda took the DQ win after the groin kick cuz Gabe WALLOPED him and got the TKO win.

Thank you Machine!! I appreciate that. But it also makes me want to see what you just described all that much more!

by RedDog on Aug 30, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vera definitely has talent, but something is still missing. His strikes look good, but they don’t seem to damage his opponents. I can’t see him winning vs the top of the food chain in the division.

Silva made me eat crow. He looked very good. His style continues to be crowd pleasing and high risk. He’s a factor for sure, but his wide open style may make it hard to string together wins vs the top guys. Still, he’s very young, so it’s likely he’ll continue to improve.

I am heartsick about Randy’s loss, but what a fight! It brought the house down where I was at, people loved it. Nog looked good, and his chin was as amazing as ever as he was outboxed but was able to take the blows and knock Randy down. Whoever heard he was getting KO’ed in training definately was talking out of his ass. The legends show what a main event is supposed to look like.

by theCloser on Aug 30, 2009 3:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this fight lived up to all the hype for sure, there were no losers last night between nog and randy. nog couldn’t submit randy and randy couldn’t hold nog and beat on him, the boxing was even but at 46 the only thing letting randy down is his chin. every round was very close nog squeeked out every round but they were all very close. chuck vs wand and now nog vs randy, how can you not love this sh!t.

by Blazy J on Aug 30, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

From where I stand, Randy got out-boxed. What fight were you watching?

Every exchange left Randy stumbling or falling.

by Kevin Geary on Aug 30, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Randy had the crisper boxing in the first round, but Nog took over in the 2nd and 3rd after Randy had taken some good hits.

by PEZ on Aug 30, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly, Nog’s chin is better, but Randy was landing more shots and using better head movement.

Freaking great night off fights Nogurra won me $140 not bad It seemed like i was one of the only ones who thought he would win, dawm he even dropped couture that was nice he took a couple of hard shots and didnt drop, Im a fan of Mir but I think the last fight nog really was in bad shape/health I would love to see a rematch if mir beats Kongo
Dawm Nog looked good great to see silva get back on track I really feel bad for Jardine but he really has a weak jaw and with all those heavy hitters its no good for him, he needs to fight guys with not much punching power like Bonner, Griffin (Jardine vs Bonner) those type of guys to get bak on track all those fights were great seems the fights wheres theres less hype and shyt talking tend to end up being the best fights

Best main event in a while. Nog looked way better then the Mir fight. Randy looked pretty good but his chin seemed to let him down.

I was really shocked that Nog couldnt get a cross and finish that arm triangle. Props to Randy for that.

Great night of fights but I didnt really think the Vera/Sos fight was as one sided as Rogan/Goldberg made it out to be. Vera won but he wasnt as good as they made him out to be.

who doubted me you jackasses. i called minotauro to dominate the standup the only thing that worried me was that kevin said he was getting ko’d regularly in practice. nogueira looked better than even tonite and i think he has a solid chance at lesnar. plus i won 10 bucks off him! woo and thiago silva, oh i jumped on the bandwagon a few days ago and oh how glad i am that i did. and to the maia nuthuggers ha!!! he got laid out !! proves that no matter how good you are in one dimension the well rounded fighters always do better

this definately was card of the year so far!!!! as i had called

You were right about NOg John. His boxing was the difference-speller 2nite[or should I say today]! Randy had no answer for it, and was the main reason why they always ended up on the ground. Randy almost died in there after those rockers!

I was not impressed with Nog. He had some nice combinations, but his hands were down and he was getting tagged the entire fight. Randy just doesn’t have the power to knock down Nog….Randy got a ton of clean shots on him. He was slow to react. If that had been brock or mir or carwin, he’d be on the canvas…

His Jiu Jitsu is still world class though

Unfortunately I think Nog’s best days are behind him. Think about all the wars and punishment he’s taken. Definitely looked better than against Mir, but still looked slow. Definitely not the Nog we saw in Pride

by Bob Lawblah on Aug 30, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

can’t believe that your still towing the “questionable Nog” line after that. He looked like the indomitable Nog of Pride days for sure.

I was excited about this card before it happened and it delivered even better than I had expected. Nog almost got those submissions which was insane to watch, that Marquart knockout was amazing and that beast Duffee breaking that record was incredible. I am suprised he didn’t get knockout of the night. If he shouldn’t have then neither should James Irvin when he knocked out Alexander the same night that Anthony Johnson laid out Tommy Speer. Regardless, I think beating a record with your knockout should result in knockout of the night. Cool to see Leben submitted. I didn’t like seeing Leben lose but its nice to see a submission being as so many cards had been without submissions as of lately. Glad to see Gonzaga win too.

I was more impressed by Randy’s loss, escaping two sub’s and going the distance, than Nog’s win. Randy is the man. I didn’t quite understand his gameplan though. When you’re older, your reaction time suffers. I thought he would stick with his bread and butter dirty boxing against the cage, but he didn’t.

Nog did look good though.

Because Randy is 100 years old. He showed signs of age to me in that fight, but his heart made it competitive. That’s the kind of stuff that makes me jump out my seat and cheer. I just aspire to be a bad ass old man one day so he’s my role model.

Nog was absolutely amazing. I was in a house full of Nog haters and I was the only person on the Nog train. I absolutely loved it. The one thing that kinda bothered me about the end of that fight was Rogan. Maybe I am wrong but when he spoke to Nog he had very litte enthusiasim. When he spoke to Randy, you would have thought Randy won that fight. Rogan sometimes just swings from guys nuts and it gets aggravating. Although during the fight it was great to hear him correct Mike Goldberg, “The Arm in must have saved him!” “No that is what an Anaconda choke is!” LOL! The other thing that got me was the 29-28 judges card. What the hell fight was he watching to even have scored anything like that. Randys only offensive round was the first and he still lost that round.

I had Marquardt winning that fight also, but I didn’t think it was going to be that easy. He got lifted off his feet and spun around…I remember seeing that happen in my high school smoking section after some kid got a running start and sucker punched some kid that was asking me for a light. I would have liked to see more of a fight but thats what happens when a less then average striker stand up with an above average striker. MArquardt has been cutting through the competition. It would be interesting to see how he does in a rematch against Silva. Marquardt maybe the only one with as many tools as Silva in the 185# class.

Poor Jardine! In his last 10 fights 8 have been against top 10 competition, this guy couldn’t catch a break if he was the only guy standing for a title shot. I had my money on Silva but man I feel for this guy. He should accept his role as the LHW top 10 gate keeper, for now. I mean it has got to be hard to know, no matter what you do the title shot won’t get to ya, but he does make some exciting fights. Silva’s back. He is going to be a beast once he comes into his own. A few more big name fights and we can truly see where he stands. I’d like to see him against the winner of Rashad and Rampage, hell even the loser of that fight.

Verra got the win and he looked ok, but he has been very unimppressive to me. He should have been able to light Krzysztof up. krzysztof looked afraid to exchange and semi star struck, am I wrong? Krzysztof didn’t look like he wanted to be in a fight, thats for sure. Man Leben went out like a champ, sleep! He didn’t seem to be himself last night, not quite as exciting as he normaly is. Wondering what that was all about! Holy House of Pain Todd Duffee! 23yrs olds 250 lbs! He should be a fun prospect to watch!

He’s a “legend” b/c he fights for the title like every fight. I thought I heard in the countdown show that he’s fought two three-round fights in the UFC? hahaha. He’ll probably get another title shot after this incredible performance. So much Captain America a$$ kissing it’s incredible.
Probably the most overrated and overpayed fighter in the UFC. Possibly Rampage too—it’s close.

Don’t get the hate for Randy, the guy fought his heart out and gave us a great show. Nog looked great, I was going for Randy the whole time hoping he’d pull something out, but not upset with that fight at all. Both Legends, neither guy went down for the count, it was a great fight. Randy will be back, he still has what it takes to compete with top competition. No clue how you ppl hate on a guy that served in the military, raises money for our troops families, never has anything negative to say about anybody and puts on some of the best fights in MMA.

O damn, personally I still don’t like him from that fiasco with the UFC when he left the belt and all that, lied about what he was getting paid, etc, etc. That’s where that “captain Paycheck” stems from….and while he is an amazing athlete, the guy (IMO) is ridiculously overhyped. He’s now, what……..16-10. And people consider him one of the best ever with a win percentage like that? That’s what I don’t get.

i don’t know why cuz that fight makes a lot of sense….(two really good fighters with power and skill everywhere who haven’t fought before) but for some reason, the idea of that fight doesn’t do anything for me. Not sure why, I bet it would be a great fight and I’d get excited leading up to it. Maybe b/c it’s two guys who have recently lost to the champ at that weight so seems like a 2nd place fight???? Someone sell me on this fight!

by split decision on Aug 30, 2009 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. Henderson and Marquardt are both deserving of a shot. Okami seems to have disappeared, but I’m honestly not interested in a fight between him and Anderson anyway. The guy hasn’t beaten any serious contenders, and a dq win over Anderson doesn’t make me any more eager to see the fight.

by yohnstoppable on Aug 30, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thank you yohn, i’ve been saying this for awhile. The only reason ppl are calling for Okami to get a shot is is “win” over AS. You can tout the UFC record all you want but none of his fights are impressive wins and he just doesn’t pass the eyeball test. we all know he has nothing to offer in a fight with Anderson. Why would you want to waste one of AS’s remaining fights on Okami? Does Okami bring anything to the table that Hendo doesn’t? More importantly, does he even bring as much to the table as Hendo??? He’s a wrestler, but does not have the stand up or punching power that hendo does. Ok, so he’s a Jap and they can give ppl problems sometimes….who fucking cares? An Okami title fight is a total waste of time no matter what his record is. If he beats Maia, Hendo, Marquardt, Franklin, Wandi, Vitor, or Bisping I’d be impressed, but in all honesty, to me he’d have to win more than one of those to be worthy of a title shot.

wow, the Nogueira loss shocked me, Randy’s one of my fav’s but Big Nog’s performance was so good he had me cheering for him half way through the fight :] so much for nog getting ko’ed in sparring? heh. was a bit disappointed with maia and his Arlovski esque loss, but Marquardt showed tons of class by declining to hit Maia again. Maia got too comfortable with a dangerous striker. however i still believe Anderson would pick Marquardt apart. extremely impressed with Thiago Silva’s performance, all i have to say is Silva vs. Vera, make it happen! Jardine’s always hot and cold, but this is 2 losses straight, and I’m afraid his career as a contender may be coming to a close :[ id still pay to see the techno viking entrance :D Leben Rosholt belongs on the undercard, terrible fight imo (maybe because I hate Rosholt) but Chris Leben earned yet another epic fail. his quest to be a gatekeeper has ended in failure :( if Vera Sozynski was a 5 rounder i believe vera would have finished it, but nonetheless im impressed and want him to face Thiago Silva, a fight which would make it hard for me to choose a favorite. all in all i think it’s pretty much clarified that the old Nog is back and that Mir’s standup isn’t as good as some of his fans have probably been raving about, and in a rematch I’d give a decisive edge to Nogueira. great event though!

by bons on Aug 30, 2009 1:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nooooo. If that holds true Randy be close to 50 years old by the time that contract comes to an end. Yes, he has a ton of heart and he held up well against Big Nog, but I think Big Nog’s physically 10 years older than 33 due to all the punishment he’s absorbed from the wars throughout his distinguished career.
Unless Randy can drop to light-heavy and fight guys without too much power, then I fear he’ll get hurt in the octogon by some young and hungry opponent with heavy hands.

by split decision on Aug 30, 2009 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree but realistically hes not ganna fufill all 6 fights no way as soon as he feels he cant compete or train the way he wants. he will retire for good thats just the ufc’s way of compensating him well and making sure he never fights for another promotion

I see randy fighting once or maybee 2 more times at the most

LHWs have plenty of KO power. Only a few people in that division (Forrest, Bonnar) don’t have power. Not to mention Randy’s chin is questionable.

Really? Maybe because they make a ton of money off selling his fights. Why does Chris Leben Fight at 11:30 after some amazing fights? Because he has purple hair and a boatload of tattoos and people love him. Not because hes the best fighter on the card. If you have not figured it out yet…what sells comes first. Clay and Brock beat Kenny and Mir. Randy is cool. We want to watch him fight his way into his fifty’s. It’s way better then watching Greg Jackson fighters count movements on their way to a powerhouse knockout.

Maia blew it, I’m gutted!!! I feared the worse when I heard he’d been training with Wand. It clearly went to his head (like it does with a lot of natural grapplers who learn a bit of standup) and he thought his standup was far better than it was. He forgot what his bread and butter was, the td and a submission. Hope he learns for the future.

One of the most amazing fights I have ever witnessed. Fighting is one of the hardest things a man can do. Physically and emotionally. Anyone who has ever trained and competed in any real combat sport (wrestling, boxing, etc)can really appreciate the heart that Randy Couture showed. If you have to lose a fight this is how it should happen. Forrest Griffin take notes… Nog looked great. Although I cant help but think Randy might have taken him lightly for this fight, Nog was better at every aspect of the fight.

I don’t think so, fellas.

Two of the fights ended in ten seconds or so, the Silva-Jardine fight lasted 90 seconds, the Vera-Soszynski fight was boring as hell. Ed Herman got injured and couldn’t continue after one round. The Rosholt submission was very nice, but honestly, wasn’t that a boring fight before that?

Nate is the only guy at MW that can challenge AS. Hendo just doesn’t have the style for him. But if Nate and Hendo have to fight for the #1 spot I would definitely pay to see that.

Couture did well. Nobody lost that fight, IMO. Nog obviously was the the clear cut winner but Randy showed a ton of heart. He’s too chinny now though to challenge the best in the world. Time to drop to LHW, for maybe one more fight or two. Thiago Silva?

by revjames13 on Aug 30, 2009 4:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hendo doesnt have the style? same old stupid cracks spewing some serious sh*t on here!!

by gaara on Aug 30, 2009 6:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shows what you know. I love Hendo, but a guy that stalks forward looking to throw a huge haymaker is not the guy to beat AS. Hendo has a great clinch takedown, but when he gets AS down his isn’t able to do anything with is because Anderson’s jits totally neutralizes him. Then they get stood up and AS has another chance to light him up. It will be a replay of the first fight if they go at it again— guaranteed.

Nate, on the other hand, has a complete game and is in his prime. Dan is almost 40. I’m fine with Nate vs. Hendo for the #1 contender spot, but it could not be more clear than Nate possesses the better “style” to challenge AS.

You get it gaara? Or do you need another lesson?

What did i tell you guys?

I knew Marquardt would absolutely wreck Maia.

by Lester The Pimp on Aug 30, 2009 7:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Massive maia fan here, but he fought like a tool. Training with wand for a couple of months isn’t suddenly going to make your striking anything like good enough to hang with nate, stupid strategy.

If i was maia with his skills I’d have gone out and out for the td from the get go, no stupid kicks. If he got knocked out trying the td, so what at least he wouldn’t die wondering.

great card. loving all the knockouts.

Once punch knockout power nate the great. what a man. was hopin for another piledriver attempt haha. ah well . couture vs nog was a class match. best nog has been by far since he came to the ufc. a lesser man would have crumbled and tapped for those submission attempts.

Hope nate gets another crack at silva.
couture should now drop to light heavy for one last crack at the title.

Disappointed with the dean of mean. expected better

people stop throwing kicks with your hands down learn from jardine and miai

by hatteras on Aug 30, 2009 9:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Damn, thought Nog would finish Couture, but regardless, I knew he would win. People were just being too quick to throw dirt on the coffin after one lackluster performance.

Called Thiago and Rosholt too, though I’ll admit, Leben was looking pretty good until the sub, better than I thought he would, at least. I think he really needs to go back to Team Quest or something. He needs a change from whatever it is he’s doing. And I felt bad for Jardine since I didn’t want either guy to lose, but I knew once they got to toe-to-toe Thiago would drop him.

And I’ll admit, I underestimated Marquardt and overestimated Maia. I thought Demian would be able to get inside and pull guard before getting hit by any power shots. I agree w/ the above that if he can make the cut, he should seriously consider dropping to 185. I think Nate should still wait in line after Henderson for a title shot though. And if there was any fight I thought I may have called wrong, it was probably Vera/Soszynski, but I stand by the assessment that Vera is fighting subpar to expectations and still has a long way to go to be relevant in the UFC LHW division.

Great card! I would love to see a new weight class at the top. Randy is just to small for some of these new heavyweights. Nog looked great. I am glad he has been working on his standup. However I don’t see what Kristof did to be in the same cage as with Vera, Totally out-classed.

by oldskooljjsu on Aug 30, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Or he could just go back to 205. I just don’t think there are enough tweeners to justify a cruiserweight division without it hurting either the LHW or HW divisions, more likely the latter.

And the only thing Krzysztof did to be in the same cage with Vera was to be someone Vera could beat, though I thought admit I thought he had more of a chance than he did. And even after having him hurt from the first round, Vera couldn’t finish him.

by Jase on Aug 30, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree! I think he was a really popular fighter and Vera needed another win.

i knew that miai was gona get beat bad this is mma i carnt belive people wanted to see him fight silva. I dont think this guy could beat gouvia bisping hendo okami kang never mind silva and sonnen is a fag it took him a while to beat mcdonald at his own game this aint 94.I am now a nate fan because that was pure class he could have hit him another 2 or 3 times and he deserves another shot. Dufee is like a young lesnar and lesnar was cheering for randy to win but i think that its because he would rather not fight nog. ATTACK DOG YOU DONT KNOW SHET yr shet is weak like krystof traitor scum

attack dog you know damn well if you got in the cage with nate or any ufc fighter it would look like kyle maynard with staph infection vs a heard of wild byson

Ed Herman…you are a STUD !…watched the fight in slow-mo after getting home from the live event…Shortfuse got injured four minutes into the first round and battled through the pain to finish the round…Limped out for round two and threw a high kick to Simpsons head that overstressed his already injured knee to end the fight…Ed Herman is Lion Hearted and hopefully the UFC will financially support his rehab time…these fighters give their all and make the UFC a ton of money…absolutely no quit in Ed Herman mindset…good luck in his recovery…BMF

RANDY CAME IN AND LOOKED GOOD WITH HIS BOXING.. HOWEVER BIG NOG LOOKED MILES AHEAD OF HIM IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE FIGHT… HE DOMINATED THIS FIGHT AND THAT IS SCARY FOR ALL OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS.. THE UFC SHUDDA LET CARWIN VS CAIN GO ON AND GIVE THE WINNER OF THIS FIGHT A SHOT AT BROCK!! NOG IS GONNA GIVE BROCK SOME TROUBLE WHEN AND IF THEY MEET IN THE FUTURE.
