Frank Mir would rip Anderson Silva's 'shoulder out of his socket' ...

... if the pair ever fought and if the special heavyweight match up hit the floor, according to Sherdog.com:
"It would be a pleasure [to fight Anderson Silva]. I look at it as a huge honor. I think he feels that out of all the heavyweights, I’d be the least likely to shoot on him before anybody else. Stylistically, it’s to his advantage. If he’s going to fight a heavyweight, standing up and trying to pick him apart is probably his best avenue for victory. Which heavyweight is less likely to take him down? I probably have one of the weaker shots in the heavyweight division.... But why would I want to take him down right off the bat?... I’m curious. I want to see what it feels like. I want to test myself against them.... Why wouldn’t I want it? It’s not like you’re asking me to fight Miguel Torres. If [Silva] shows up at 220 pounds, I’m between 245 and 255 pounds. That’s not an outrageous size difference.... Me and him, we can move around and play a cat and mouse game. I’d be looking to land the heavier, more powerful shots, and he’d be looking to pick me apart, looking for angles. I think it makes for a very exciting, interesting match-up. [If it hit the ground] I’d rip his shoulder out of his socket. I roll with jiu-jitsu guys who are better technically than me in jiu-jitsu, but if I catch something, there’s no getting it back."
Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir accepts middleweight champion Anderson Silva's recent challenge to one day get busy inside the Octagon. "The Spider" -- a 185-pound champion -- has recently gone up in weight to test himself against light heavyweight competition after cleaning out the middleweight division. A move up to heavyweight would be unprecedented, but more than likely wouldn't happen anytime soon -- company president Dana White, naturally, isn't to keen on the idea. But, we can still chat about the possibility, right? Let's hear it in the comments section below.

I agree Frank but Silva could easily pick you apart for 3 rounds

I disagree, Kongo will prove everything i’ve been sayin about Mir. Also Mir doesn’t like to get hit. You only need to land one solid shot and his mind/spirit melts.

NNR, that theory was out the window in the first Brock fight. He got nailed a few times yet didn’t stop attempting a way out or a sub.
You guys don’t give Mir enough credit on here, just wait and see what happens to Kongo.

I agree Champ. Imagine how quickly Silva would crumble after a few hammerfists from Brock….I’d give Anderson about two punches, then it would be lights out. Mir is tougher than people think.
I’m no Mir ‘hugger either…I just think he’d walk through Anderson easily…I really do. So does Dana, or else he’d be willing to make this fight, and he’s not. This fight would ruin the reputation of his best fighter.

LOL. Props to Anderson that we are talking about him fighting 70 lbs out of his weight class. And even Dana is scared for GSP fighting 15 lbs out of his weight class.
Props to Silva for even having the debate.

Dana hasn’t made this fight because Mir is 2 weight classes above Silva.
Regardless of what happened in this hypothecical fight it wouldn’t “ruin” Silva’s rep, well only among idiots perhaps.
I wouldn’t move to heavyweight if i were Ando, it’s just dumb and there are plenty of amazing fights for him at 205 if he wants to continue fighting at that weight.

Brock wasn’t loading up like in the second fight. He was doing those masterbating shots on him which yea puffed him up but nothing serious. Once a solid beast goes through, he quits. Watch his Ian freeman fight for example. Also throwing subs while dazzed or out is just the body’s reaction due to all the drilling of technique done over the years. Watch and listen to Torres talk about the armbar was tried on Bowles even though we could all tell he was gone. Anderson would put a solid one right on Mir’s nose or chin.

Mir’s skill and technique isn’t anywhere near his peak as Silva’s so weight difference shouldn’t be the problem. Mir’s isn’t exactly great at stand-up or wrestling so I don’t see how he expects to win.

Mir’s not a good striker but he does have a lot of power. He def could not strike with AS but could probably take him down at get the sub. I seem to be one of the few who actually likes Mir on this site.

John, don’t worry bro, you know that I’m always on your side when it’s concerning that irrelevant prick. He’s neck to neck with David Heat for the 2009 irrelevance award. Tito and Forrest aren’t nominated b/c Tito was injured and Forrest was stylistically, badly set up to lose.

Here is another great quote from Mir, about fighting people like Brock Lesnar:
"Honestly, I think big guys are easier to fight. They don’t move as fast, they get tired quickly and they’re not as technical…. If I want to sharpen my tools I have to work with somebody who’s not a sitting target like Forrest. Who moves around a lot, he’s extremely conditioned. He’s fast and can throw 300 punches compared to 30 punches a round. Forrest is my worst nightmare. Basically you have to go for broke and knock him out, and if you don’t he’s still going to be standing there coming after you…. There’s so many things going on in the fight. I think his (Brock’s) mind will be paralyzed because he’s having to deal with so many new elements."
Frank Mir is a smart guy.

One other excellent quote by Mir:
"I think that a lot of people realize that he was only 1-1, he had a .500 record in the UFC when he got a title shot…. I know at the end I’m going to be able to get a hold of him. There’s going to be a day of reckoning. So he’ll have to answer to me personally. There’s going to be no reporters or nobody to protect him…. Three or four years from now, if I decide to switch over into full time coaching, I would like to coach Brock. I see a lot of things that he’s done in his last couple of fights that I think are mistakes that are not really his fault, they’re maybe his trainer’s faults. How can he be so talented, an NCAA champion, probably one of the best wrestlers to come out of college in the heavyweight division, and still make some of the real basic balancing and footwork mistakes that he’s making right now?"

Guess what, Brock Lesnar would walk through Miguel Torres.
Oh yeah, and Bobb Sapp would probably beat up Uriah Faber.

Randy by split decision. As sad as it is, NOG IS FINISHED!!! Even if he pulls out a win, his better days are past him. He has just been in to many wars!!! Time has not been good to him like it has to randy. I don’t even like couture, and want to see Nog go out with a win, but I am just being real here. He may still have the heart, but that does not matter if your body cant keep up!

Kev, P-Dud…
Who can really have a good assessment of this fight between two brainless. One think he’s a striker and the other one think he’s a wrestler but both are clearly delusional. I would said that with the athletic abilities of both fighters posess, well I got to go with Kongo. Kongo is stronger than Mir, got better shoots than Mir, better takedown and better striking than Mir. And I can almost say that he got better TD than Mir also. He got Mir completely out class in this fight.

That is silly cocky talk from Mir. Silva hits hard, way harder than Frank hits. Everyone says they wanna stand and trade with Silva, then it happens and people change their minds very quickly. This would be a drubbing and I don’t care what anyone says. Mir is slow and doesnt hit hard, Silva would cut him up like a christmas turkey at an all you can eat buffet. Mir is overrated and I wouldnt bet on him to make it out of one round.

Anderson’s a great fighter, but Mir would be to big and strong for him. Not a big fan of Mir, but I think he’s right on this one. He wouldn’t literally “rip his shoulder out of the socket”, but he’d definately over power Silva and beat his ass.
Forrest Griffin is one thing…but Mir is way more skilled, way more experienced, way bigger, and way more powerful than Forrest.
Mir by sub – 1st round.

by DB on Aug 29, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
no kidding. Anderson is a true 185. I say if Mir can catchweight to 220 then fine. But it is silly for Anderson to fight a guy 70 lbs heavier than his weight class.
by JeremyJackscan on Aug 29, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But it’s about 20 lbs of real difference. If AS actually does walk around at 220 that is and Mir is like 240. People are too obsessed with weight class. There’s less real difference in weight between Mir and AS than there is between Mir and Brock or Couture and Brock. The heavyweight division could easily be like 3-4 weight classes but since the UFC makes it only 1 you have no problem with the gigantic gap in weight that’s possible.
by frosnt1 on Aug 29, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
True. Their natural weights are very similar…this fight is a legit possibility. If Frank could get it to the ground he would win and if it stayed standing anderson would win…simple as that.
by ja434650 on Aug 29, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
this would at least be an intersting matchup with someone even bigger than Forrest. I still think AS would murder him. Thing is Forrest may of been a little bigger than AS on paper but AS had the better reach so it cancelled out his ‘size’
Mir’s striking has improved but his hands are too slow for AS and he doesn’t have the head nor feet movement that it would take to strike with AS.
I wouldn’t be surprised if AS finished out his UFC contract and then went to fight Fedor (name the place) to prove once and for all that he’s the best pound for pound fighter.
by kibbled_bits on Aug 29, 2009 11:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
All Mir would have to do is duck his head, run at Silva, wrap his arms around his waste, pick him up, slam him down, throw 4 or 5 elbows, then grab any limb he wanted….he’d beat Silva easily.
lmao at the Feodr/Silva talk. Wow.

what a huge waste of a fight. spider would DOMINATE mir, regardless of the weight difference. the biggest advantage that heavier guys have is they hit harder and can muscle you around. except in mir’s case, his standup is average (no KO power and slower than griffin) and his wrestling/clinchwork sucks. and his shot is no good, which he admits to. and in terms of bjj, mir has NEVER submitted anyone who had above average bjj skills, and spider has freaking black belt under big nog. this fight would go down exactly like spider/griffin, with mir losing his spirit after eating a couple hard straight punches.

Perfect match-up in the HW division for Silva. Mir has no wrestling and that is one of the keys to beating AS, taking him down.
Silva would tee off on Mir, who’s stand-up has improved just enough so that he thinks he might be able to hang with AS for awhile. He would get KO’d in the first round.
If Silva wants to challenge himself in the HW division he should fight someone that is a threat to take him down (Cain, Carwin, Couture) or someone that can at least strike (Gonzaga, Kongo). But he’s smart, and Mir as a former champ is someone that would add to his legacy. Easy victory for AS, and I like Mir. Just not a match-up that Mir can win.

I hate to rain on the Silva love parade, but I see his comments as a punk move actually. Mir is a strong, talented fighter, and it would be an interesting fight. However, Silva called out a guy that has no head movement, and is slow on his feet. In short, someone he thinks he can beat.
If Silva is so brave, and his manager wants to be condescending to GSP for the size difference, why deosn’t Silva call out a HW that he thinks would be a challenge? I dont hear him calling out Fedor or Brock or Cain or Carwin or even Coutour.
Man up Anderson, stop being a bully. I can see through it.
