Knock, knock: Demian Maia UFC 102 interview exclusive with MMAmania

It’s safe to say Demian Maia has made a successful transition from grappling sensation to mixed martial arts star.

In fact, he’s made it look way too easy.

As a submission grappler he accumulated a laundry list of accomplishments in jiu-jitsu, including seven state championships in Brazil, a Brazilian national championship, two world championships, three World Cup championships, a Pan American Championship, and a ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship for good measure.

In other words, he is one of the most accomplished submission grapplers on the planet. Perhaps Maia was too good, prompting him to pursue new challenges in the form of MMA a few years ago.

In 2005, he began his professional career and rattled off five consecutive victories. The UFC took notice, signing him to a fight contract just about 24 months later. And he hasn’t let up since.

Maia has been extremely impressive, winning five consecutive UFC fights all by way of submission (no surprise). In four of those fights he also won the "Submission of the Night" monetary award from the UFC management.

He now finds himself knocking on the door of a potential title shot in the middleweight division currently ruled by fellow Brazilian Anderson "The Spider" Silva.

The man standing in his way of that potential opportunity of a lifetime is none other than UFC veteran Nate Marquardt whom he will meet on the main card at UFC 102 this Saturday, Aug. 29 in Portland, Oregon.

Make no mistake about it: Marquardt will be the toughest test of Maia’s career up to this point.

The fight will also serve as a gauge as to how far along Maia’s training has progressed into becoming a more well-rounded fighter with fewer holes in his game.

Will he be able to go strike-for-strike with Marquardt on their feet if needed? Will he be able to bypass the strength and wrestling skill of Marquardt and get the fight to the ground where he is most comfortable?

These questions will be answered Saturday night.

For now, we’ll answer a few others with the help of Demian, who was able to take some time out of his hectic fight week schedule to address his evolving skill set, getting a title shot, how to beat Anderson Silva, and UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Check it out:

Star-divide

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You’re known primarily as a jiu-jitsu fighter. With that being said what is your favorite submission to use?

Demian Maia: I really don’t have any favorite submissions. What the opponent gives to me is what I will take.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Some of the mainstream MMA fans in the United States find it hard to appreciate a guy with a phenomenal ground game. A lot of them would much rather prefer to see two guys slug it out. What do you have to say to those fans out there who are struggling to appreciate a guy like yourself?

Demian Maia: Actually I don’t feel that. I feel like everybody likes my fights. They want to see just an exciting fight. It doesn’t matter where (it takes place). The problem is that too many people think it’s always going to be exciting fighting. I always tell that guys like my way of fight.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Going back to Nate Marquardt. We all know he is a very well-rounded fighter and comes from a great camp. If you had to pick one, what would you say his biggest weakness is?

Demian Maia: I don’t think he has weaknesses. He is complete.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You’ve been competing in MMA for a few years now. Obviously. when you’re competing in grappling tournaments you don’t have guys punching and kicking you. As a result, have you adjusted your jiu-jitsu to tailor it more towards MMA? If so, what specifically have you changed?

Demian Maia: Yes, of course we have. Since I started training jiu-jitsu we always trained a lot of MMA. Jiu-jitsu was made for self defense. We were training with punches and kicks and that kind. The only big complication is that in jiu-jitsu we don’t have to think about that but in the training we always used to do.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Can you win this fight with Nate if you guys are standing the whole time or do you have to get the fight to the ground?

Demian Maia: I prefer to get the fight to the ground for sure.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your standup at this juncture in your career?

Demian Maia: I think it’s about five right now, but I’m working hard.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What is your official prediction for the fight?

Demian Maia: I don’t like to do that, but I hope to win by submission.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): The word on the street is that Dan Henderson is getting the next title shot against Anderson Silva. Do you think there is a chance that the winner of your fight Saturday could leapfrog Henderson and get that shot if one of you pulls off an impressive performance and convinces the UFC otherwise?

Demian Maia: Yeah, I think so. I think I need to change the fans mind and if I get the fans mind they (the UFC) will agree.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Nobody has been able to figure out Anderson so far. He’s been the middleweight champ for a long time. Is he vulnerable and if so, how can he be beaten?

Demian Maia: He’s a man like everyone else. He can be beaten stand up or striking, but he’s very hard to beat in both places. Even in his grappling game, which isn’t as good as his striking.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): So he would be in trouble on the ground against a guy like yourself who is a world class jiu-jitsu fighter?

Demian Maia: Yes, for sure. I’m not saying he’s easy. He’s very good on the ground but of course he’s vulnerable. If he fights with me he will be vulnerable.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What did you think of Anderson’s performance against Forrest Griffin at UFC 101?

Demian Maia: It was amazing like he always is. He’s amazing when he fights, especially his striking game.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Before I go I also wanted to ask you about Frank Mir. I know Frank is a guy you helped train for his UFC 100 fight with Brock Lesnar. What did you think of Frank’s performance that night?

Demian Maia: I think it’s hard to fight a guy like Brock. He’s very heavy and very athletic and a very good wrestler. Frank won and then Brock won again and I think they could fight again.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you think anyone in the UFC can beat Brock Lesnar going forward?

Demian Maia: Of course. I think Frank has (a chance to win). Even Couture does. Minotauro (Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira) does. A lot of heavyweights have a chance to beat him.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): That is all I had for you Demian. Is there anything you would like to pass along to your fans out there or any sponsors you would like to thank?

Demian Maia: I just want to say thank you to Bad Boy my new sponsor. Thank you for everybody who appreciates my game.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Thank you for the time Demian and best of luck on Saturday.

Demian Maia: Okay, thank you very much, Derek.

Wow.. he thinks Randy can beat Brock.. Minatauro too??? I think he beats A. Silva in a Jits tournament.. but not MMA.. I think A. Silva Jits is good enuff to get back to the feet and then exploit his 5 rating striking being that A. Silva is about an 11 out of 10…. I also See Nate taking this one Sat. Nite..its not going the distance either.

Demian is a cool guy. I hope he beats Nate with an impressive sub then I hope he gets choked out by Braulio next month at the ADCC’s!! Roger too is gonna smash Drysdale for sure. He is an animal at the moment.

Best of all I’ll be there to see it live. I can’t F*CKIN wait!!

MAIA R2 by neck triangle.

RNC Rd 2. People will see how to take the back off slick armdrags from half guard. That’s how it will happen. You heard it here first.

by NameNotRequired on Aug 27, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nate by first round death punch. No seriously though My prediction is that Nate will hurt him bad with strikes and submit Maia, probably with the same sub he got Horn with.

“Nate will hurt him bad with strikes and submit Maia”

JRE, you really are a genius! Though if that happens I will change my name for… JRE is a true God, for 1 week.

by Alpha Male on Aug 27, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure Ca$z, R.Gracie got that in the bag. I don’t see Nate submitted Damian but if it happens, I will be the happiest guy on this site for sure.

by Alpha Male on Aug 27, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My bad Ca$z, I realize that you were saying that you want Damian sub Nate. I guess I was still in shock of JRE prediction.

by Alpha Male on Aug 27, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JRE is right imho , I think Nate will land a bomb and Maia will shoot in and lose basically , prolly TKO but a SUB would be even better.

by Dayzah on Aug 27, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll be watching for that screen name! I’m serious, I have $$ on that prediction.

by JRE on Aug 27, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

NNR: Im feeling the arm drag into back control prediction…

Alpha, I honestly find it extremely hard to picture Maia being submitted by anyone..If Nate pulls it off, I too will bow down to JRE.

Ca$Z: I am more jealous of you going to ADCC, then of people that get to go to a stacked UFC event…Enjoy it, you lucky BLOKE!!! lol, and YES, Roger is going to Twist Drysdale into a Focking pretzel.

Demien is a class act. He has begun to make Jits exciting for the drunken casual fan. I hate hearing people Bash Maia. He definitely deserves everyone’s respect, and I really hope he wins. I would love to bet money on Maia, but I just dont feel comfortable picking against Nate who is a focking animal…bUt I also have a feeling that this fight is going to be surprising cause for some odd reason, I just have a hunch that Maia is going to take Nate down at will (dont ask me why I have this strange feeling but I do), similar to the almeida/Grove match up…but if that happens then Marquardt wont be able to survive the submission onslaught the way Grove was able to.

by john G on Aug 27, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Almeida was the one who barely survived getting submitted.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 27, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Spot on John, Maia represents everything great about traditional martial arts, he is very respectful and looks to win with technique without having to hurt his opponent and has done so repeatedly in exciting fashion, seamlessly adapting his world-class BJJ skills into MMA. He is a true ambassador for the sport and it baffles me that anyone can find a bad word to say about him.

by David W-S on Aug 27, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Wow.. he thinks Randy can beat Brock..” – sorry but your sadly and I mean sadly mistaken if you can at least see randy winning at least on a small level…randy was winning the fight until he got clipped…look at what randy has accomplished…wake up – size is clearly not everything! Have you even ever heard of Royce Gracie??? Wow some people…go back to watching the WWE…

by zeroecho on Aug 27, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

HE WAS NOT WINNING THE FIGHT BEFORE HE GOT HIT….why do people say that its not true atall…and it was like halfway threw the 2nd round its not like he made it 4 rounds

by JG on Aug 27, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think what he meant to say thats its possible for any of them to beat Brock, that they have the talent to be able to beat him. Have randy fight brock 10 times, im willing to bet brock will lose a few.

by Big D on Aug 27, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anyone can lose on any given day with out a doubt if brock takes a clean shot from Carwin it can easily be lights out same goes for if Fedor takes a clean shot from Rogers.

by Puck Head on Aug 27, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

size is everything no a days. back then no one knew what bjj was, thats why Royce won. Now everyone cross trains.
John, I’m one of the guys who thinks Randy could have beat Brock if he didn’t get clipped. His wrestling was on par with Brocks and Brock was frustrated that he couldn’t take Randy down at will!

by kevin on Aug 27, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Brock did not want to get aggressive like he did against Mir and make a mistake going against one of the smartest fighters in MMA. He stayed calm and didn’t get too aggressive. Randy has great Cardio but so does Brock and if the fight went into the third and fourth rounds I think Randy would of had to work much harder getting the big guy away from him and Brock would of eventually got him down and did much the same as he did to Mir on the ground. It’s kind of ironic actually that Randy made the mistake of being to aggressive and got caught.

by Puck Head on Aug 27, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its not that ironic its just how randy fights i.e randy chuck 2&3

by JG on Aug 27, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually think Maia would stand the best shot out of him, Marquardt, and Henderson because he could take Silva down and get a submission whereas Marquardt and Henderson could not really heart Silva on the ground.

That being said I think Marquardt is a bad matchup for Maia and he will have trouble taking Nate to the ground. If he wins this he def deserves the title shot, though.

by frosnt on Aug 27, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know why I said “heart” above, obviously i meant to say “hurt”

by frosnt on Aug 27, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought you meant he would give him some luuurrrving on the ground?!?! LOL

by Ca$z on Aug 27, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, save the ground love for the Guida’s and Maynard’s of the world.

by PW on Aug 27, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Marqy is more durable but doesn’t have any one tool to deal with anderson. So he would make a tough match but most likely will lose. Maia might get blown out in the 1st but his one tool or two that can defeat anderson.

by NameNotRequired on Aug 27, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, you meant that they would be mentally broken.. they can not heart him on the ground, they would be scared and basically give up

by RoBerto on Aug 27, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anyway guys… Nate by KO, 2rnd!

by Alpha Male on Aug 27, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think so too, or maybe in 1 round..

by RoBerto on Aug 27, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt will DESTROY Maia.

The Maia hype ends on saturday night.

by Lester The Pimp on Aug 27, 2009 9:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree, its only time before people start to really take advantage of his poor stand-up game. I hope he works on that, but he will never be a good boxer. Not fast or powerfull enough. I see Nate taking this becasue he will not go to the ground and has been working on defending the ground attack everyday for sure. This ends by KO and Nate will win, sorry I love Damian, but he has one massive hole in his game and its only a matter of time.

by Cantrim on Aug 27, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed Lester!

by LJ on Aug 27, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Maia’s jitz is insane but Marquardt will pound him into the ground.

I think out of everyone in the mw division – nate has the best chance of taking out silva – i think training with GSP has given nate that push to hit the next level

Silva punked Griffin – but i really dont think nate will walk into silvas laser beam strikes like forrest did

hey do any of you guys think this could turn out to be a snoozer with marquadt just throwing jabs and avoiding the clinch at all costs 4 a boring ud?marquadt says hes happy to go to the floor if need be but does anyone really believe that!!

by scott on Aug 27, 2009 10:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really don’t like Marquardt, but it is hard to remember him ever in a boring fight. I think he will take it to Maia and will either get a TKO or Maia will sub him. Also, remember, both of these guys are very hungry for a crack at Silva (another crack for Nate) and there is no way a sleeper will get either of them a shot at the belt.

by BNF on Aug 27, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, BNF.

This fight ends in a KO/TKO (Nate) or sub (Maia).

It will NOT go the distance.

by OJR on Aug 27, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you BNF! The ufc doesn’t want any more boring fights for the Spider so if this is a snoozer than their not getting a shot.

by BOW on Aug 27, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea I would be willing to bet Dana or Joe Silva makes sure to tell these guys straight up “Pull a Silva/Leites and no titleshot”

by Irishmikey on Aug 27, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve never seen Nate or Maia in a boring fight, both are too aggressive for this fight to be anything but exciting.

I’m as big a Maia fan as anyone on this site so of course I’m predicting a Maia submission win, Nate is strong and a good striker and grappler but Maia has proven that he can deal with strong grapplers and strikers before and he will do so again. No BJJ fighter is better at getting an MMA fight to the ground than Maia and when he gets you there, Demian is as dangerous as they come.

Nate’s best chance is to wear Demian out and pick him apart on the feet once he’s gassed but when you have a ground fighter as good as Maia, there is always the threat of the submission and Nate has far from perfect submission defence.

This is the fight that will make Demian a star and he will go on and give Anderson his toughest test, right now he is the only MW with a shot at beating Andy. Hendo and Nate already blew it and the rematches won’t end any differently, while no other MW is anywhere close to Andy’s level. War Maia.

Should the article title read “Knock, knock…” or “Tap, Tap”

by schnetzler on Aug 27, 2009 10:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

maia will submit nate. why? nate will do a 1-2 headkick. maia shoots. got a single. maia pushes nate to the cage. maia takes nate down. side control. armbar.

by Rob The Tiger Khan on Aug 27, 2009 10:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nate won’t be going for any head kicks. He will stick to the boxing and make sure Damian doesnt get a hold of him. Plus, Nate has way more power than Damian, thats goona be the downfall here.

by Cantrim on Aug 27, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah i think marquart will, i think even his kick ass name will, although i trained with maia once in brazil and he pulled the slickest darsh chokes i have ever seen, from standing got a wizzer and then got his bycep across his face and then secured it whist in mid air pulling the guy down – tyhe guy had tapped befor he even needed to roll into it a bit – but he did anyway

So many people have Marquardt crushing Maia…..based on what? Marquardt gets in a fluke KO against Kampmann and TKOs Gouveia? You have to go back years to find where Nate hurt anyone else in the standup. Marquardt is going to get submitted rather quickly. He’s not great enough in the standup to KO a guy who obviously doesn’t want to stand with him, and he’s not anywhere as skilled as Maia on the ground. If he gets into Maia’s guard or half-guard, it’s over.

Maia by sub, 1st or 2nd round.

by Fred on Aug 27, 2009 11:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

fluke ko, that was a destruction! and gouveia is a tough fight for anyone. nates probably the most well rounded middleweight in the ufc and i think he will destroy maia with crisp combos laying him out cold mid way through the second

by Jared on Aug 27, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

have you seen nate fight? he’s very intimidating – he manhandled laites – if he didnt piledrive him he wouldve already had his 2nd chance at silva

id be very surprised if maia subs him

by Jerrolds on Aug 27, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nate is not that great he has beaten no one good and has only a punchers chance. Miai by armbar round 1

Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida possible for UFC 106!!

by matt on Aug 27, 2009 11:31 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Even if Nate wins he’s going to get destroyed by Silva just because he’s scared of him. You could see it in his eyes that he’s dreading the day he fights silva. I think that in order to beat Anderson you must get in his face and prove that you dnt give a fk about what this guy has done in MW division

by Carnage on Aug 27, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

All those guys can beat anybody in the world! If they can catch em’ with something good! otherwise, I don’t think so! Not right now!

No offence Mania – I can not stand this guy interviewing – f**king B O R I N G and it is like we are reading second hand information from previous interviews. Are you sure this interview actually happened?
