UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida prefers chess, not luck

"Striking is like chess, where I put all my technique. Sometimes I make the guy walk for where I want, I make him attack me like I want to counter attack. Sometimes I leave my leg open for him to kick and then I pull his leg and kick him."

-- UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida explains to TATAME magazine how he utilizes his unique karate style to dominate his opponents. Rejecting the notion that striking is a "lottery" — where fighters look to land a single punch to end the fight — "The Dragon" instead favors picking his opponents apart from pillar to post. Machida also notes that before his and teammate Anderson Silva’s "conquest in the UFC," there was a long tradition of Brazilian strikers, including former world lightweight boxing champion Acelino "Popó" Freitas, as well as UFC veterans Vitor Belfort, Pedro Rizzo and Marco Ruas, the founder of Ruas Vale Tudo, a hybrid of kickboxing and Brazilian submission fighting. Perhaps it’s a good thing to note that Brazilian mixed martial artists should be remembered for more than just their sick jiu-jitsu skills. We’re now two months out from UFC 104, where Machida will look to make his first title defense against fellow-Brazilian Mauricio Rua. At 18-3, "Shogun" has earned 15 of his wins by (T)KO. Care to share your opinion about who will shout "check mate" when all is said and done?

well see, its not like i think its a easy pick and the favorite is going to be machida deservingly but i think shogun will pull it out.

by roy on Aug 25, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, all BS out of the way…

I think Shogun has an excellent chance.

How good is he now? That’s the big question…

by OJR on Aug 25, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah i don’t know if shogun is ready yet i think he could have used another fight before trying to take on someone like machida but well see what happens

by roy on Aug 25, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

With all due respect to Shogun, I don’t even think this is going to be close.

But with those -500 odds on Machida, I don’t blame anybody for sprinkling a little something on Shogun (insert urine-related jests here).

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

shogun all the way….machida has a couple highlight reel wins and suddenly he’s indestructable? shogun has being doin that his entire career…

not taking anything away from machida, but too many people on this site never even typed the letters “m a c h i d a” in a row before the evans fight…

i think gaygard would destroy him personally

by HellaHectic on Aug 25, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the shogun of old, this would be a great fight. i think style wise machida wins. but if shogun comes in like the shogun in the pride days he could steal it. i think he may be to predictable for machida. i think its an unpredictable unorthodox striker that would fair the best against machida.

by phil on Aug 25, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i really don’t see him getting blown out by machida, but you never know with him. i would be surprized if he takes him out quick though.

by roy on Aug 25, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, it won’t happen.. Shogun is too fast and too technical to make stupid mistakes and give Machida the chance to finish him-

by RoBerto on Aug 25, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shogun isn’t that technical, RoB. He drops his hands, reaches in too much, and throws wide, looping shots. He is skilled, powerful, reasonably fast, and tough. But technical? Not really.

He did look a little more disciplined in the Liddell fight, but once he falls behind he will start throwing desperate bombs, and that is exactly what Lyoto wants. You thought Rashad was going to destroy Machida as well, don’t keep making the same mistakes buddy.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said on an old post Shogun can win this but not if he is the Shogun from pride days (health wise maybe) as he will play right into Machida’s hands. He needs to be really focused not to make any mistakes and ready to pounce whenever he sees his chance.

Rushing Machida is a silly thing to do as we all know and I don’t think we have seen the best Machida yet either but I just hope Shogun comes in with the right gameplan and prepares perfectly then he can definitely win this one. Counting out Shogun in this one is crazy and I would bet a lot of people change their attitude if he did.

I have been singing Machida’s praises since day one when everyone on here used to say he was boring. I always knew he had that special something but I just hope he loses this one as I have been a Shogun fan for too long to not root for him and would love nothing more than to see him get the belt.

It also makes for much more interesting title fights in the future if Shogun has the belt with possible rematches with Rampage, Forrest, Hendo or best of all Anderson!! Then by the time Machida gets back to a rematch I would be happy for whoever to win. I just want Shogun to take it this time.

by Ca$z on Aug 25, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good post, i am picking shogun but am not stupid enough to think that loyota is not the favorite or that he is not very dangerous. giving shogun no chance seems pretty far fetched to me.

by roy on Aug 25, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let’s put it this way ladies and gents…

If this was 2004, Shogun would win. 2009-onwards, it’s Machida. Got it?

by Syd on Aug 25, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The 2009 Machida would pick apart the 2004 Shogun as well. MMA striking has evolved. Shogun’s chute-box uber-aggressive Muay Thai simply leaves him too exposed to counters from a fighter with the timing, speed and accuracy of Lyoto.

That brawling style worked great against guys who didn’t have the educated striking pedigree and natural talent of guys like Lyoto and Anderson. Bum-rushing either of these dudes is an express ticket to unconsciousness.

shogun by tko in the second

by Jared on Aug 25, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Intro I expected better from you, usually you make intelligent points (Dana bashing aside but as someone who has nothing good to say about fighters/personalities that he hates I can’t talk) but bashing Machida for being boring mate you should know better. Lyoto is a smart fighter and doesn’t take unneccessary risks, he actually thinks about what he is doing rather than diving in recklessly and that style has proven to be the most effective striking strategy in MMA, as Machida and Andy’s success proves. I know you like Shogun but you don’t need to resort to the mindless sniping that you’d expect from the drunken “stand and bang” fans, you’re better than that.

I’m looking forward to Machida outclassing Shogun, right now Lyoto is hitting his prime and Rua has not looked the same fighter since his time in Pride. I’m still not convinced by Rua’s cardio and as good as his striking looked against Liddell, he will have a much tougher time hitting nevermind KO’g Lyoto while wrestling has never been Shogun’s strength so I don’t see him taking down Machida, especially if Tito couldn’t, but on the off chance that he does then Machida has the BJJ to neutralise Shogun’s. This is Lyoto’s fight to lose and I’ll be amazed if he does.

by David W-S on Aug 25, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Everything jj is saying is 110% true. Machida is going to convincingly take this. And I h8 to count a guy out, but just like Randy/Nog this weekend, I will not be sweating it the whole fight. Or til it. Randy saturday. Machida @104

by Daniel worby on Aug 25, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what i’m saying is that Shogun won’t give anything away and that will make this fight a little harder for Lyoto.. Shogun’s better than Thiago Silva and Rashad standing, and probably better than any fighter Machida has actually fought standing in MMA ever…

by RoBerto on Aug 25, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he probably is the best striker Machida has faced. But as far as styles go, I think Rashad’s was more likely to succeed against Lyoto than Shogun’s.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let’s say the old ShoGun from 04-05 comes out of those opponents has any of them have the style or ability to avoid strikes like Machida and has Machida faced someone with the aggression speed and power or the 04-05 Shogun. If Shogun comes out as his old self I still give the edge to Machida who’s style is a designed well for against a aggressive striker like Sho Gun and Machida will have a effective strategy for any Muay thai attempts I’m sure. If the later Sho Gun Shows up I can’t see him lasting much more than a round.

by Puck Head on Aug 25, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lyoto is gonna’ blow shogun out… without a doubt… sorry Shogun fans but I think JJ’s above comments about Machida’s technical superiority over Shogun are spot on.

by THORAZINE on Aug 25, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d say Sam Greco and Michael McDonald are the best strikers Machida has faced in MMA, but he didn’t stand with them all day though.

They’re both still K-1 level strikers though.

by Space on Aug 25, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont think a technical striker is the type of fighter to beat machida. he seems to know whats coming next. i see someone with skills like hendo doing the job. someone who could get him up on the cage and tire him out, but also has alot of power. now i do not think hendo would beat him simply b.c hendo gets overeager in the standup. if he just laid back and waited for the moment to get machida against the cage and throw some hard hits he would be good. in the tito fight machida didnt look comfortable up against the cage but tito doesnt have the greco skills to keep him there.

once again not saying hendo could do it just saying i see that as the best way to beat him. that is the only place thus far i have seen him look uncomfortable

by phil on Aug 25, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets say the Shogun from April 15th of 2004 comes out against say, the Machida of July 2009, then it is pretty obvious who will win and there is no argument. Yet if the Shogun of December 2005 comes out vs the Machida of summer 2008 then we will have a UFC from like February 2007 taken place at the end of October 2009, setting up a grudge match in January 2010.

by JeremyJackscan on Aug 25, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

phil, you are right my friend. I think Tito’s done the best against him, and someone who could do the same and better would obviously have a good chance against him.. when Tito got to him in the 3rd Machida was exhausted

by RoBerto on Aug 25, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It speaks to Machida’s awesomeness that the fighter you guys think did the best against him was completely embarrassed and outclassed for three rounds.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am with Roy, and JJ. Shogun will not last that long. Machida will win this and I will put $ on him.

by iagoof22 on Aug 25, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

how did Tito do the best against him? Because he lasted all three rounds (many have done that against Machida) or because he got a lucky triangle on him at the end of the fight? Tito was destroyed in that fight. And I agree with JJ about Shogun not being technical..everyone saying that the Shogun of 2004 would beat Machida are worng IMO…the sport has evolved and that aggressive style will only get him in trouble against a counter-striker like Machida.

by Jake on Aug 25, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

NO he wasn’t getting destroyed anywhere! If he would have done that then he would’ve done what Houston Alexander did to Jardine or what Wanderlei did to Jardine, putting it on your opponent constantly, like Ortiz on K.Shamrock is what destroying your opponent is.

Back to Ortiz/Machida, the only good shot Machida landed in that fight was the knee that gave him the last round, cause Tito was CLEARLY winning the 3rd round up until that, and IMO they were both equally close to finish eachother in that round so it could have gone to Tito, IMO..
Machida was also breathing heavy after the fight and Joe Rogan just went – “Man, I wish this was a 5-rounder!”

by RoBerto on Aug 25, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good thing about Tito is also that he had the right gameplan, and wasn’t afraid to go to the ground with him even if he had to drop to his back for it..

by RoBerto on Aug 25, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no one has had a close fight against machida but in the tito fight when tito got him against the fence machida didnt look comfortable. thats my point, tito showed that the machida does have a weakness and that is against the cage. a good greco guy i think could pose the biggest threat. they would have to fight their fight and keep it on the fence

by phil on Aug 25, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well now that he’s proven that he has serious power then it makes it that much harder to close distance on him. But from a technical standpoint, all the mistakes that shogun makes when he strikes will be nothing but fodder for Chida. I’ve said it many times – Him and Anderson strike like true world class strikers. Everyone else throws practiced and drilled combos that are childplay for them. No feints, head movements, body movement while keeping strong base, ect… They left that phase of their striking long long ago.

My point is that at this time guy just better start diving for TDs and clawing away at their legs to get it done on the mat.(which is hard enough since both have proven to be high level; machida has beaten BJJ world champion in straight grappling.) Shogun has a proven to have a solid leg game -maybe get it done imanari style!!!

by Alpha Male on Aug 26, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida has head movemen, it’s just not standard boxing/kickboxing head movement, it’s more north/south. And his deep stance protects him. It gives the illusion that he is right there to be hit, but every time you try, you JUST miss… and get cracked a couple times for your trouble.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 26, 2009 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Shogun beats Machida, and thats a big IF, Silva will challenge and beat the crap out of Shogun for the LHW title next. I don’t think Machida is losing for a really long time. He is virtually unbeatable, even more so then the Spider cause he is physicall stronger then Anderson on the ground.

Not to mention he’s 40 yrs old. He hasn’t proven jack in the UFC. Machida will eat this guy for lunch, no doubt. 1st round knockout if Shogun attempts to strike with him.

So, how do you personally know Shogun is back? I mean, he hasn’t exactly proven anything in the cage. Saying “he’s back” doesn’t make it so. Machida has consistently improved his game, becoming damn near unbeatable in his last 2-3 fights. Shogun is on a steady decline and each one of his UFC fights displays that, from Forrest on.

I think you are on the right track to the type of fighter who will beat Machida. I think the only type of fighter who can do it is someone who can control him, like a Tito or even Randy. I’d personally love to see Randy fight him. Whoever can get him on his back and keep him there is gonna beat him. Hell even Hendo if he’d move back up and get the chance!

Just curious how you Shogun guys see him winning? I guess possibly a submission, but even that seems very unlikely. Machida has never even lost a round in the UFC so a decision is highly unlikely. Applying pressure doesn’t seem to work (see the Tiago Silva fight). So, seriously, how?

KO? He can’t be touched. Plus, he doesn’t have to worry about the same type of TDs that he did agaisn’t Tito and Rashad. He can throw more kicks in this fight. Machidas’s trips and TD defense are 2nd to none. I just can’t see anywhere Shogun wins. I an just waiting for someone to break it down logically to me where Shogun is better. This is starting to feel a lot like the people who were saying Kenny would beat BJ. More of an emotional pick IMO.

by BNF on Aug 25, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i would say that its safe pick to bet on machida but don’t underestimate shogun, yeah he hasn’t looked great but he went through back to back acl surgeries. machida looks untouchable till someone touches him than you will be able to see it.shogun has great striking and i think he will strike with machida and well see who goes down.i can understand people thinking machida is going to win(and he might) but shogun will be the toughest guy he has fought in my book.

by roy on Aug 25, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really hope this fight is competitive. Nothing worse that paying $55 for a shit*y fight. I would like to see how Machida deals with the adversity of someone getting the better of him for a round. I doubt it will happen, but back and forth wars are the best.

for those of us who have sanely watched mma programming before, our moneys on machida. shogun is alright, at best, at this stage of his career. he might last a couple rounds. after him bring on shad for another beating OR page can come in and look like a beginer. thats just how its gonna be now that machida is on top.

It seems that more often than not when a fighter int he UFC seems unbeatbale or nearly invinceable they lose. Examples are:

Arlovski losing to Sylvia
Franklin losing to Silva
GSP losing to Serra
Cro Cop losing to Gonzaga
Liddell losing to Rampage
Rampage losing to Griffin
Couture losing to Lesnar

I think Shogun has a chance and he looked amazing against Liddell. Something just tells me that Shogun will pull this one off.

Here lies poor SHO-GUN,
Slain by Lyoto as the round begun.
He was tough and he was brave,
but his life he could not save.
In PRIDE he was the one to beat,
but in the UFC he should’ve taken a seat.
They thought he was back when he KO’d Liddell,
But he was just a shadow of his former self.
Now the fans will cry as the family mourns,
Cause’ Shogun’s gloves will never again be worn.
He should not have gone around doing all that braggin’,

Machida cannot sneak up on anyone. People are really looking at the tape on him and searching for wholes. Someone will beat him but not Shogun. Hope it goes more than two rounds but not sure. Lyoto did look really winded against Tito after the fight. Obviously jiu jitsu is his weak spot. Wrestler Tito caught him in a triangle and almost won so it can be done. I see Machida winning this one then Knocking out Rampage.

I don’t see why so many people are counting Shogun out so quickly, yes Machida is the favorite, as he should be, but Shogun does have a chance. So far Machida has been untouchable but he has never faught someone with Muay Thai like Shogun’s, although if Shogun wins this fight I don’t think it will be standing up. If Shogun can get Machida to the ground I think he has the advantage, Shogun has great submissions and ground and pound just look what he did to Arona and Oveerem, plus who has Machida ever fought with a ground game like Shoguns? All that being said I don’t Shogun will be able to take Machida down and will end up getting picked apart on his feet. Should be a very interesting fight though.

Yep. Although the UFC sure did it’s best to hype up Thiago’s stand-up…even though anyone with a brain knew that BJJ was the only way he’d beat Lyoto.

Shogun will catch Machida and he will fall to his knees as fast as OJR does when Dana enters the room.

it doesnt matter how good shoguns muay thai is, its pretty much like a fight between two man one with a baseball club, the other with a gun. it doesnt matter how good you are swinging that club, worlds best muay thai is useless against machida karate. Even anderson silva has stated in the past that when he spars against machida he cant touch him either. JUST think about it, if machidas is on a much higher level with his striking than anderson silva, what do you think he will do to shogun? I will be suprised if shogun lasts past the first round. Liker anderson said the reason he doesnt fight machida is not only are they friends, but machida presents a very big problem, that is taken right from the post fight conference, ufc 101.

by sam on Aug 25, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Apples and oranges.

I bet if Chuck and Machida fought, you’d only see two punches a round…both being counter-strikers and all.

Hell…maybe Chuck would beat him.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida’s style may be finishing fights lately, but it’s just a matter of time before someone steps into the cage and refuses to engage him…then what? You guys are all going to crap on the other fighter…that’s what. It will be the most boring fight ever, but you are all too busy pissing in coffee cups and having a drink every morning like your hero does to realize that his style can be viewed every weekend at your local Tae Kwon Do tourney.

You can all jump on the bandwagon all you want because of his recent finishes, but he is not an exciting fighter…he’s a counter-striker….there has been plenty of them that have come and gone.

Give me a fighter that BRINGS IT every fight, win or lose. You can keep your “champ”, and pay $50 to watch him…I’ll save my money and watch my nephew counter-strike at Tae Kwon Do.

And before you get on the whole “anti-UFC Introvert” kick…it has nothing to do with that. Some of my faves are UFC fighters…..THAT BRING IT EVERY FIGHT…WIN OR LOSE!!!!!

Fedor
Tito
Wandy
GSP
N.Diaz
Vitor
………..

They all bring it.

by introvert on Aug 25, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, and brawlers can be viewed every weekend at the local watering hole. If you think your nephew’s Tae Kwon Do striking is as much fun to watch as Machida, I guess you would have rather watched a bar-fight than a Tyson bout.

Excellence is awesome, and Machida is excellent. Counter-striking the way Machida does is incredibly difficult, and if you really practice martial arts as you claim to, you would know this. Try fending off the bum-rush of a fast and powerful striker without headgear some time. Against Rashad he was every bit as aggressive as Rashad was. I found that fight very exciting, and so did everyone I was with. Same goes for the T. Silva fight.

Your comparisons are ridiculous, introvert. I don’t always agree with you, but your posts are usually worth reading. This one is not.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Name 10 Machida fights worth watching…out of his 15.

I dare you.

by introvert on Aug 25, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His style has evolved. Training with Anderson has made him more dynamic, just as Lyoto has made Anderson more elusive. Penalizing a fighter for not finishing his early fights is unfair. Lyoto’s last four victories have been awesome fights, as was his beatdoen of Rich Franklin.

He has gotten more and more dangerous as his career has progressed, and that is the natural evolution of a fighter who doesn’t rely on one-punch power.

You use GSP as an example of a fighter you love to watch, but as much as I love GSP I find Lyoto’s fights a hell of a lot more entertaining than GSP’s these days. And Tito? Zero striking skill and lieing in guard while dropping elbows and doing nothing to improve position is exciting? LOL introvert.

by shogun on Aug 25, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shogun has faced the better competition. So far. Chuck had faced some great competition as well. The fact remains that the good fighters that Machida HAS defeated have never looked as completely outclassed as they were by him. I think Tito and Rashad could both give Shogun fits. And when it’s all said and done, Shogun’s accomplishments will pale compared to Lyoto’s.

And enough with the “I’ll save my money” crap. We’ve already heard you claim that you’ll never spend a dollar on the UFC again, so you wouldn’t be watching it anyway. I’m starting to think you’re just broke, and hating on the UFC and some of its best fighters makes you feel better about missing all the fights.

lol @ jeremy….I watch every UFC event. I just don’t pay for it. Not because I’m broke (although I won’t brag like some people do here), because the UFC doesn’t deserve my money after they publicly announced that a video game is more important than a talented roster.

Hey Intro,

I could understand you finding TKD or any other martial arts boring when its your nephew. How old can he be? When you’re ready you can come to KW and watch some real TKD, grown up style and all.

If you’re watching WTF, then I really understand why its boring. That’s olympic style, looks like 2 chickens going at it.

introvert, it doesnt matter if you dont engage machida, if you dont then he starts picking you apart with kicks, and strikes. he throws karate kicks where he doesnt wind up, so you cant block them, if you do try and engage, and come toward him, he simply counters and picks you apart. If you try and take him down, he simply brushes you away , he has terrific balance and takedown defense from his sumo background, so pretty much whatever you try it wont work. i think its amazing that a fighter with lighting hands like rashad, was made to look in slow motion by, machidas even faster hands, and laser guided shots.

LOL @ that pic. Looks like Machida is telling Tito, “Whoa, hey man, I don’t swing that way.” lol

Shogun hasn’t really been too impressive, sure he beat Chuck but Chuck is pretty much past the end of his fighting career, he just doesn’t know it yet. Machida was very impressive in his last 2 fights and looks really good. I’d favor Machida because of that, but Shogun might have something to offer, we just haven’t seen it yet. Really wish they showed Shogun fight 1-2 more before a title fight but oh well.

by jaime on Aug 25, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yea and a lot of you thought torres was a lock to beat bowles too…superior striking, superior groundwork…one of the best p4p fighters on the planet…

i think the odds were pretty similar..

so how did that work out for you?

by HellaHectic on Aug 25, 2009 7:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

and torres was WAYYYYYYYY more dominant at his weight class than machida is…

just sayin

by HellaHectic on Aug 25, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s a fair comment, anybody is beatable in this sport. But we have seen that Torres has a habit of getting hit a lot in his previous fights. The difference this time was that he couldn’t walk through Bowles’ considerable power like he did Mizugaki.

Lyoto, on the other hand, has looked all but invincible. He almost never gets hit, and the closest thing to trouble he’s been in is the Tito triangle attempt. And all this in a much tougher division than Torres’.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t say that you were one of the dudes who picked Bowles going into the fight. I will look that up!

by jay on Aug 25, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

u talking about me or jj? ive always said torres was overrated because hes never fought anyone…that weight class is terrible, hes made a career of beaten a bunch of scrubs and i never thought he deserved even being considered a top p4p guy…hes the only p4p guy that has never beaten a top p4p guy…

i always knew when he fought someone that was halfway decent that he would be exposed…fabre would murder him if he moved up, so would brown…

who is the highest rated p4p guy hes ever fought? and look at the other guys in the rankings and look who they’ve fought…

by HellaHectic on Aug 25, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that I may have attached myself to JJ, but I was talking to you Hella. I don’t believe for a minute that you had Bowles winning that fight whether or not you think Torres is over rated. If you weigh 75 pounds and dominate your division you could be number 1 P4P, without fighting another guy in the top P4P. P4P is so stupid that it makes absolutely no sense. Of course he would probably lose to guys who are naturally heavier than him, but that alone doesn’t mean he is crap. I would think that GSP would have problems at 185, especially against the top two guys in that division, like the scenario you just used.

by jay on Aug 25, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

look at the guys that gsp has had to beat…and look at the people torres has had to beat…their resumes arent even close…look at the calibur of fighters anderson has beaten…and now that machida is facing…you cant even compare what torres has had to face compared to these guys..

hes had the easiest run of any champ in any division…truthfully i didnt know much about bowles and neither did any of you, he had only had 5 fights…so i was expecting him to stop torres streak…but i put 20 bucks on him….500 odds..how could you not…and i’ll put 20 bucks on shogun too…500? i cant resist that…who cares if i lose 20 bucks, the payout on that is ridiculous..

i always bet underdog in every fight…all you need is one upset and it will pay the rest of your night, and every ppv has one upset…sakara did me good last ppv

by HellaHectic on Aug 25, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The odds on Shogun are +350.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 25, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Payout is 100, ridiculous? Not much of a win for long shots.

by jay on Aug 25, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what i find humorous here is the fact even anderson silva said he gets schooled when he spars against machida. IS there anyone here that believes shogun, wouldnt be destroyed by anderson?

WAR SHOGUN HATTERS!!!

Shogun will come prepared for this one, nobody wants to be this close especially Shogun and lose… He knows what its like to be there and he wants it again… Glad to see its getting a lot of attention… This means everyone knows this fight is for the ages… Also glad to see the sport has grown so much back when Don Frye was fighting, you member (George Lopez.) Back when Royce Gracie was a fighter to be reckon with… Well, by reading all the comments by now you all know who was ranked #1 in the LHW division for a long time until injuries hurt him… I know Machida is a good fighter and Shogun is a GREAT fighter… Shogun mind you is only 27yrs old and Machida is what 31yrs old, so Shogun has a lot of fights still ahead of him… Then again who could beat Shogun if Machida is the only one??? So there could be possible rematch in the near future… I know if Machida wins I would love to see Rampage and SHogun go at it… For those who talk about Shogun being slow and rushing… Watch the Liddell vs Shogun fight and tell me who was doing the stalking… Shogun was backing up and fighting very smart, leg kicks over hand rights that were very elusive… From what I recall it was Liddell who was doing the stalking and Rashad did finish him in the second round verses SHogun in the 1st…

On that note Shogun by submission in the third round leg lock… However I see Machida not wanting to mess with Shoguns ground game…

WAR SHOGUN!!!

I don’t see anyone beating Machida until they start using his style of fighting, Karate/Shaolin Kung-Fu or traditional martial art where they utilise the full movement of the stance.

Karate has the most effective stance!!! I mean look at all of Machida fights, no one can connect with their strikes, WHY??

I think it’ll be the toughest fight of Machida’s career. I have no doubt Shogun will come in with guns blazin’ and a good game plan. He stayed in the pocket with Liddell, and I suspect he’s gonna do the same thing with Machida. However, I think ultimately Machida will frustrate Shogun and bate him into fighting Machida’s fight, and then it’ll be over before R5. As much as I’d like to see Shogun shine, I think he’ll be out-classed in every aspect.

by MMACrossfire on Aug 26, 2009 12:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

HellaHectic, Machida has never lost a round! So when people count out Shogun it isn’t cause he’s bad it’s because Machida is that good.

by Oswald Gobblecock on Aug 26, 2009 12:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I see Shogun as the same level as Thiago Silva, Soku…etc I don’t think Shogun will bring anything special to the table or anythings that Machida haven’t seen before…he is just another aggressive brawler…we all know what’s going to happen with that type of style…

by Tim-chida on Aug 26, 2009 1:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Apparently, those saying Shogun will rush, again I don’t know how many times I have to tell you he didn’t rush in at all he was light on his feet… Did you see what his first kick did to the leg of Chuck??? Maybe try watching the fight again and you will see. Machida will get kicked multiple times and then Shogun will force Machida to fight on the floor where SHogun will submit him with an arm bar… Mind you Machida does tend to leave his leg out there to be kicked and believe me Shogun will kick the hell out of it… Machida will be put to the test (I guarantee it,) then we will see if you are real MMA fans or just like to watch a Machida run around the octagon…

Yes, Machida has a good way of fighting, however Shogun believe me is watching his videos and studying everyone one of them, so he leaves with the belt… Fight of the year guarantee…

WAR SHOGUN!!!

well a lot of people have been studying lyoto machida and gone in with a gameplan and if that would be your game plan to give him leg kicks lol youd be going out with a loss too because machida knows when that kick is coming and follows in with a straight right and thats the punch u see him floor people nealy everytime he throws it lol

there are two fighters that have the worst fuck fans in the world: fedor and shogun

Fedor: refuses to fight the best in their prime so he can suck my balls

Shogun: shofuck has a shitty gastank and the power of my terrier without his roids

im sorry i cant be a fan of shogun until that queffer proves hes worth the blowjobs he recieves

im not shogun hatin or nothin but he makes my tuna twat hurt when i hear people talk about how shogun will do this or that because hes ko’ed liddell and then rag on page because he got robbed against forrest(who spanked shogay) after ko’ing liddell and beating hendo, and people say page cant beat machida and shogun can?

im sorry people, respect all educated mma guesses but shogun isnt what hes made out to be, yall watch

i forgive a,l dumbass comments ahead of time

Anyone thinking this is machida toughest fight is wrong. His toughest fight was BJ back when he was inexperienced and out of shape.

All you glory boys talking about shogun in 2005 wake up and look at the calender, this is 2009. Machida has shown that he has grown as a fighter, Shogun has shown exactly the opposite.

Fuck Shogun conditioning, this fight is not going pass the second round.
