Jake Shields vs Jason 'Mayhem' Miller to determine Strikeforce interim middleweight champion

Former Elite XC welterweight champion Jake Shields and former ICON Sport middleweight champion Jason "Mayhem" Miller will battle it out for the interim Strikeforce middleweight title sometime soon.
No firm date or location is known at this time. Miller made the announcement in a recent forum post over at MyFightTeam.com.
Here's the snip:
"I'm set to take on Jake Shields for the middleweight championship of the world in Strikeforce."
It's expected that the winner of the 185-pound contest between Shields and Miller will challenge reigning Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le later this year to unify the belts.
Le is currently tied up with several Hollywood-related projects outside the cage that have kept him out of action for more than one year. He expects to return to competition by the end of 2009 or early 2010.
More on this breaking news in a bit.

What about Jacare? I think he should get a shot over Miller.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 24, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good question.
Better question.
Why has Le been allowed to hold up the belt for this long?
This is just as bad (if not worse) then the UFC holding up belts due to “TUF obligations.”
Garbage.

Well, their HW belt hasn’t been defended in about 3 years, so I guess this is right in line with company policy.

their lightweight belt isnt that far waway either, its like the thing to do win the belt and never put it on the line

I care about Jacare, it’s ridiculous that we are missing out on a world class grappling match between Shields and Souza in favour of some annoying prat from an awful faked reality show. Jacare has already beaten Mayhem and was winning the rematch before Miller cheated Jacare and the fans out of the match by illegally kicking him. Awful decision from Strikeforce.
The worst part about SF has always been their champions, none of them defend their titles. Thomson is too injury prone and Melendez should be recognised as the true champion because he has been out for so long, Le is a one dimensional kickboxer turned D list moviestar and he should have been stripped of his belt a long time ago whilst Overreem avoids fighting in the US and his physique gives away why. All 3 are an embarrassment to the promotion and should not be the champions. Hopefully Mousasi and Cyborg can have successful runs as champions because SF badly needs legitimate titleholders if it is to be taken seriously but the LHW and womens divisions are far from stacked in SF so I have my doubts. If only Gegard was in the UFC, then he would get the recognition that he deserves.

JJ – that’s exactly my thought. They sign him then they just hand it to miller without having a contract with him? Coker is fn up. For once i will root for Shields. I simply hate miller.

i have been a fan of coker, but he is focking up right now. when your interim champs r better than your regular champions, then its time for unification bouts that will crown a real champion

I have to retract my previous statement. I had not watched the last fight between Miller and Jacare when I posted it. I didn’t realize I was completely wrong in my observation.
Again sorry for posting with my ignorant point of view.

Cung Le is done. He’s a disgrace of a champion. Shields will win this and then dominate Le if he ever returns
by IrishKev on Aug 24, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
CUNG LE IS A DISGRACE and Strikeforce is a disgrace for taking its fans as a joke and calling that actor it’s champion!
I hope strikeforce crumbles to the ground. Who the hell wants to see Cung Le? He is a Fukn Joke

i love strikeforce, and love watching cung le fight he is no joke.i don’t like that he has not defended the title and strikeforce should have stripped him a long time ago but i don’t blame him for wanting to do movies.

who has cung le fought to make him “not a joke?” Frank? Cung le has zero ground game and the only reason he’s “exciting” is because of his “flashy” kicks!

he has zero ground game? have you seen it? no you havn’t his sancho throws are awsome his kicks and stand up are great is he on the level of anderson no. but dose that make him a joke than?i don’t think he should be champ but thats not his fault he went undefeated in kick boxing and he could hang with some good mw’s i don’t expect him to beat the top guys in the ufc but i guess everone who can’t is a joke than.

woah, carnage is an idiot roy. I’m just saying, do i need to list who he’s beaten? no one worth mentioning! No, I don’t think he’d hang with any top 10 UFC mw. Good for him for being in a movie for 10 seconds, what ever floats your boat. At least Randy gets speaking parts in movies that no one sees! I agree he shouldn’t be champ, but disagree that he’s impressive in any way. Frank stood with him because thats what frank does, he’s a company guy and wants to help strikeforce. They fight 10 times and frank takes it serious, not guaranteed a quarter million win or lose and guaranteed not to get cut, Frank takes him down and pounds him out or subs him 8 times!
by kevin on Aug 24, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
man, we disagree once in a blue moon roy and you pounce… I’m sure you enjoyed the last strikeforce show too right? All 26 min of it! I’m a huge strikeforce fan, and have defended them for a long time, but their titles and last show are/were jokes!
by kevin on Aug 24, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Roy the guy has had 6 fights, only 1 against a name opponent and that was effectively a kickboxing fight against a past his prime Frank Shamrock because Shammy wanted to keep it standing for some bizarre reason, he even admitted that and didn’t attempt a single takedown. He is a joke because he’d rather be a no name actor than fight for a living and we are fight fans not awful acton movie fans so everyone is frustrated that this loser is holding up what could be an excellent division for SF. Mind you snubbing Jacare for Mayhem won’t do them any favours.

all i am saying is i like strikeforce,i think they are improving of course i am not happy about the belts there but i think things will get better, cung le is no joke he is a fighter with a great kickboxing resume and a not so great mma resume but that doesn’t make him a joke in my book and i don’t blame him for taking movie offers.and really was only replying because i thought carnage was a idiot as well and just throwing a jab at you kevin i got your back on another post this guy put out there on you.

The winner should be let out of there contract so they can fight real competition in the UFC. Strikeforce has one good person in each division and a bunch of UFC table scraps. The sooner Fedor bleeds them dry the sooner I wont have to waste my time with Coker’s Clowns. And mayhem needs to realize that “the world title” of strikeforce just means you are the best person the UFC isn’t interested in.

I like Jake Shields, great fighter. But we won’t ever know how good he really is if he keeps fighting scrubs & washed up UFC fighters in Strikefarce.
Could Shields give Anderson a run for his money? Or would he fall on his face and get knocked out by lesser opponents such as Leben? We may never know.

Of course Shields couldn’t give Anderson a run for his money. He doesn’t even belong at 185. But he could give plenty of top UFC welterweights a great fight once he gets it to the ground.

that said, Baroni is fighting at WW now too, so whats the point of adding him to a mw thread.

C’mon you guy’s stop the fighting one thing we all know is Jake couldn’t beat Hughes or Serra so who cares it’s just a fight for a championship on lower calibure event enjoy it for what it is or don’t watch it’s that simple.
by Beaver on Aug 24, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think he would beat them both easy, not fitch alves josh i won’t even say gsp we all know better.
by roy on Aug 24, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
as a huge shields fan, it pains me to say this, Hughes would over power him and serra would out strike him. Serra and shields have probably the same level of BJJ, so I would give the overall edge to serra!
by kevin on Aug 24, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i am a serra fan but his striking is not that great and his bjj would not be better than shields. hughes would own him in his prime but after seeing him against serra i think it is well past it. if he could not own serra(really a lw) he would not own jake.
by roy on Aug 24, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
serra has about 3 times the power of shields in his strikes.
by JB on Aug 24, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he might have more power but that dosn’t make him a better striker. you guys really think seraa would beat shields you too funny.
how many people has serra stopped in a fight? how many ko’s how many subs?
and i like serra and am not a big fan of shields but i can see that he is way better than serra.
by roy on Aug 24, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah but considering shields has next to no stand up, and serra can nullify his jits, shields would only have a size advantage!
like I’ve been saying for a while, shields wants to be on the P4P list, but he’s not even the best fighter in his camp… and like I said, I AM A FAN!

Well it is nice to see 2 guys who are friendly that are still willing to do their job and fight each other.
I will never understand that. Can you imagine if Magic and Bird refused to play agaisn’t each other because they were “friends”. I am surprised more guys don’t just say fu*k it I will fight ANYBODY. Must be an ego thing.
by BNF on Aug 24, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Magic and Bird’s sport doesn’t involve beating the living shit out of each other. I agree that guys should fight whoever their promotion puts in front of them, but I can empathize with a guy not wanting to smash his close friend.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 24, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But don’t they beat each other up every day when they spar? What is the difference in a real fight, about 25% more effort and a fat paycheck? Some classics fights have been between friends (Smith/Sell). And I would like to see more in the future. I would love to see Fitch put a beating on Koscheck.
These guys should be able to put their ego’s aside for 15 min and do their job.
by BNF on Aug 24, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Plus the fact that they pay their trainers a pretty penny. Say the guys from AKA do decide to fight each other, who goes to a new camp for that fight? That would probably be a lot of money and hassle to have to move your whole camp somewhere else. I don’t think it is personal feelings that would get in the way of most of the guys, it would be the hassle of finding the perfect camp somewhere else. Especially considering that the only time you would probably have to fight a team mate is for a belt or number 1 contender status, would you want all your normal training partners helping one of your buddies to train so they could beat you? Probably would become pretty uncomfortable hanging out with those dudes again after the fight.

45 min in mod and I didn’t say anything bad. Sorry to complain, but sometimes it gets very annoying here.

BNF, fighting and sparring are very different, unless you travel back in time five years and visit Chute-box. And I get your point and agree to an extent, but I don’t see where ego enters the equation at all. It’s about not wanting to do serious harm to a guy you spend a great deal of time with every day and share a bond with.
Maybe they are concerned that they will hold back a bit or not go 100% on a guy that they are pals with. Maybe they don’t want to go back to the gym to train with a guy that they just hospitalized or were hospitalized by.

Shields VS Miller is a great matchup for a interm champion, Although I don’t see Jake having much trouble getting the win.
As far as Cung Lee & Alistar not defending there belts this really upsets me as I’m a diehard fan and untill Strikeforce can get there Champions to at least defend there belts twice a year they can never be considered a legit promotion. I just want to see these two guys get stripped of there titles, because what happens if for some miracle Cung Lee beats Shields/Miller in the winter? do we have to wait another 2 years for a title defense?

IMO- Jacare would beat Shields and Miller. Miller and Shields is a bigger draw though.
I also feel these 3 could hang with the UFC’s best. I wouldnt say they would win, but they are good enough to defeat anyone. Still SF’s MW div is paper thin.
