UFC Quick Quote: Randy Couture has no punch

"We think that Couture will fight standing against him, and Rodrigo thinks that too. Rodrigo is 100% prepared standing. I always said that this fight were good to Rodrigo, because Couture has no punch to knock him out, and Rodrigo boxes better than him… Rodrigo is prepared in the ground too and will work to submit, because Rodrigo has everything to submit him. Our strategy is stay away from the fence."

-- Luiz Alves, the Muay Thai coach for Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira, tells Tatame.com that his fighter is set to stand and trade with Randy Couture at UFC 102 because the "Natural" doesn't pack much heat on his feet. He may be right -- Couture doesn't have a clean knockout on his resume in 25 career fights. But that hasn't necessarily stopped him from handling (and defeating) the big dogs, including Tim Sylvia, Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort, Tito Ortiz, Pedro Rizzo and Kevin Randleman, among others. Will he add "Big Nog" to that list on Aug. 29? For the record: Nogueira has one knockout, and just one technical knockout, in 37 career fights ... hmmm.

who, nog or randy?

nog has never been submitted~ randy has been subbed more than once~

It took Randy one shot to drop Tim while it took a couple for fedor to drop him.

Randy has pretty good power. :)
I hope he KOs Nog.

Whoever wins this fight should fight the winner or Dos Santos and Cro Cop. The losers fighting from those two fights. I think the one who makes it out of that little “tournament” could fight Lesnar. next for the title.

You’ll be disappointed Natas coz he’ll get guillotined mid 2nd round while trying to dryhump aka guida him to a UD.

i like both guys alot, but i think randy will bully him wherever it goes and maybe go for the kill in the late rounds or win by dec, man i wud kill for this to be a 5 rounder..

To say Randy has no power is nuts. Ya he doesn’t have any huge KOs but he has major damage with those fist. He is a very smart and technical fighter that gets from point A to point B in the shortest/safiest distance. Randy has the most title fights in the UFC for a reasn. (15). If I was Nog I would publicly appoligize for my D-bag coach. They are boyh vets that don’t need to get into this petty crap.

by Bluepit on Aug 23, 2009 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions

The only title shot he deserved was against smith coz he actually contended into the title as opposed to being handed. Every other time, it was simply a matter of marketability- made no sense from a fight/ranking standpoint despite the results. Seriously this is a man whose longest win streak since 2001 is 2. I still can’t believe that people associate him with being a dominant champion at LHW or HW.

by NameNotRequired on Aug 23, 2009 2:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Couture hasn’t been submitted since 2002 or so. Plust Couture seems to have developed more power in his punches the longer he has been training standup. Couture is going to beat the hell out of Nog.. I really like Nog I just don’t seem him handling Couture at all.

He has, it’s just cause his technique and angles has gotten better over the years..

NNR: Im with you as always buddy! Randy has had a great career, but only because of his old age. If Randy were 30 years old right now, his career would be considered good NOT great! But Because he accomplished so much as an od man, everyone slurps his cock. As a Heavyweight his career has been vastly over rated. I dont think he was anything special at Heavyweight. Check out his Heavyweight history:

? against Nogueira
Loss to Brock (in Brock’s 3rd UFC fight, 4thh nmma fight)
win against Gonzaga (vastly over rated at the time)
Win against Tim sylvia
Loss to Ricco Rodruiguez
Loss to Josh Barnett (tested positive or roids)
win Pedro Rizzo
Win against Pedro Rizzo
Win against TK
Win against Randleman
Loss to Enson Inoue
win over Mo smith

He is 7-4 as a heavyweight, Losing against all the top heavyweights that he fought. Do you people realize that the best HW wins Randy has under his belt are against Tim Sylvia, and Pedro Rizzo?….yet you fools let the UFC trick you into thinking he is some kind of Heavyweight GOD!!!! He also DUCKED many top Heavyweights. He was in the UFC at the same time Arovski was in the UFC for about 7 years…why has he never fought Arlovski? why was Arlovski/couture never even been mentined or discussed? He ducked Nog forever….it took NOG looking pathetic against Frank Mir to get Randy to finally step up and accept that fight.

IMO, Randy’s career was much more impressive as a light heavyweight, but he basically only fought 4 fighters in that division: Chuck 3 times, Tito, Van Arsdale and Vitor (a couple of times)

I have always believed that Nog has boxing advantage over randy, and Nog would LOVE to be on the ground against Randy, on top or on the bottom. I always believed that Nog had the advantage everywhere this fight goes, accept for the clinch against the Fence, and it seems that Nogueira agrees with my assessment and his gameplan is to just avoid the Clinch, which is very smart.

I have been big on fighters earning title shots, and Randy has been given bunch of handouts by the UFC because he is marketable. Yes Randy has won UFC titles on a milllion different occasions, but he didnt deserve any of those title shots. anyone can win the title on any given night….what makes you a champion, is the winning streak that earned you the title or how you defended that title….and in those categories, Randy has been BELOW Average! He has only succesfully defended the heavyweight title a few times. He won it against Randleman, then he defended it twice against Rizzo in consecutive fights…He also won it against Sylvia, defended it against GOnzaga, who had no business getting a title shot, and then lost it to Brock!

When I think of Randy, I dont think of him as a GREAT Fighter, but I do acknowledge him as a once in a lifetime athlete similar to Lance Armstrong.

This is Nog’s fight to lose. ALWAYS Has…It just depends on how he is physically come fight night!

Basically, What is impressive about Randy is the age in which he accomplished everything…If we took age out of the equation, and ony gave him title shots when he EARNED them, he would be NOTHING SPECIAL!!!!

by john G on Aug 23, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

How do you figure he ducked top heavies. He gave up his title and quit the #1 mma org in history to pursue a fight with the so called #1 undefeated heavy.which now has signed with strikefarce cuz he is a chicken sh!t halfsteppin moist azz b!tch. I like both fighters equally. I wont be disappointed no matter what the outcome. Randy is the master of finding whole in other fighters and exploiting them, Nog is a f#cking warrior who stays cool and collected even when getting his azz handed to him,and still manages to win.

John if you want to be so ultra critical of Couture’s record, just take a look at your man crush Fedor’s record and apply the same critique. Trust me that will look equally as ugly. At least Randy hasn’t had to pad out his record with wins over such HW greats as Zuluzinhio, Hong Man Choi, Mark Hunt and Matt Lindland.

And he wouldn’t come to the UFC to fight couture, what does that tell you??

Seriously John apply your same critique to Fedor’s record. I cant be bothered, it’s been done a thousand times and’s getting old, but if you do you’ll see that Fedor’s mainly beaten up on cans and LHW’s and has only three or 4 quality wins. Works both ways champ!

and Barnet!

Couture and Barnett are the only 2 fighters that Fedor didnt fight (in his era) that I wish I could have seen fedor fight…Everyone else from that Era, he has beaten!

Nog multiple times
Cro Cop
Herring (top 10 at the time)
Shilt
Randleman (Randy won the title from Randleman)
Coleman (twice)
Arovski
Sylvia
Fujita
TK (who is a great fighter that doesnt get any respect from this site)

After this next year we can add: Werdum, Grim, couture, and Alistar to that list!

Back in the day, Fujita probaby woould have grinded out a decision win against our beloved Frank Mir! lol

I cant believe you listed Shilt, Fujita and Coleman, youre reaching Buddy. Shilt’s never been any good at MMA, Coleman was miles past his best both fights and Fujita (a weak @ssed puncher) nearly KO’d your hero. You see John when you strip it down, I’m right, the guy’s got 3 or 4 quality wins, Nog, CC and possibly AA.

JV: I talk mma around here with other peopple with great knowledge of the sport. YOU are semi-retarded…and have nothing to offer an mma debate with me, so I respectfully ask that you just keep my name out of your mouth and leave me alone. I have no DESIRE to hear your stupid opinion, and lack of knowledge and BRAINS. Find some high school kid to argue with! you should be playing with other people on your level.

ataack: there are plenty of fights on Fedors record that I am not pleased with, ALl FIGHTERS have Padding on their records…the difference is that Fedor has BIG WINS over a lot of top fighters, where as even Randy’s greatest accomplishments at Heavyweight arent that Special if you take age out of the equation.

I enjoy your post and respect your oppinions (attack)and you do usually keep it real, so I will be really surprised if you disagree with that statement!

your thoughts?

Attack, I respect your knowledge, so when you make a statement ike he is adfraid to come to the uFC to fight Randy, it really pisses me of. yOU are better than that! Randy and Fedor will fight, next August, but it wont be the UFC. a fight is a fight, and it doesnt matter under what roof the fight takes pace in. NOG is a legit win and really makes Fedor one of the greats due to NOG himself not only being great but losing to Fedor 2 times(they fought 3 but one was stopped due to unintentional head butt)
Cro Cop – Is a kick boxer and literally is getting owned in the modern MMA era. The last time he had a meaningful victory was against Barnett in 2006. He got owned in the UFC his first time around and won due to eye poke in his last fight.
Herring – Who had he beaten at that stage in his career to be top 10 at the time? When he fought Fedor he was 20-7 and had lost to NOG, Belfort and anyone else that was good.
Shilt – I cannot even believe you put him on here! This guys biggest victories are over Pete Williams who was never really anything (no offense Pete), and Guy Metzger who is a LHW.
Randleman – what you forgot to mention was Randleman won the vacant title by beating Pete Williams before Randy took it from him. Pete Williams (again no offense Pete) is the best guy this true LHW has ever beaten.
Coleman – He can still go for an old man that is for sure but he was 40 the first time they fought and 41 the second and weighed 205 for both fights.
AA – has been hype for a long time, but I will give you this one. He doesn’t suck but has been beaten by Silvia twice. You do the math.
Silvia – Last time this dude won was to Vera and it was by decision. Other than that he is getting KOd by everyone.
Fujita – are you freaking serious even putting this guy on the list! His biggest victory besides beating Ken Shamrock (due to corner stoppage for exhaustion!) is Bob Sapp!
Tsuyoshi Kohsaka – This guy beat Fedor due to stoppage for a cut, and took NOG to a draw but other than that has lost to everyone of any kind of importance…. Whoops sorry again Pete… He did beat Pete Williams way back in the day.
After this next year we can add: Werdum, Grim, couture, and Alistar to that list
Werdum looked terrible in the UFC he went 2-2 and got KTFO by Dos Santos – so if Fedor does beat him so what.
Grim – this man can punch, but first he would have to beat him.
Overeem – I don’t know how they will make this fight happen, because he will never pass a drug test in the states.
Randy? – By the time he would get to fight Fedor he would be 47.

Couture has always fought the best there is to offer, and he’s always looking for a title fight. In MMA, records don’t mean everything nor are they necessarily a measure of how good a fighter is.

“Our strategy is stay away from the fence.”

Good luck with that.

by BC Mike on Aug 23, 2009 1:26 AM EDT reply actions

Even Brock found himself against the fence.

A better strategy would be how to get off the fence and avoid damage while against the fence.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Aug 23, 2009 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Although Brock has the size and it was suprising to see him against the fence with Randy, Nog is was more technical then Brock. A black belt in jits and one in Judo and almost 40 fights of experience, should help him along the fence quite a bit. I am not saying Nog will be hip tossing Randy to the mat but it will be advantageous, to say the least. Just like Randy is an excellent game planner, Nog is amazing at baiting you into making a mistakes that are 3 or 4 transitions away. It is going to come down to who is the better chess player.

I really don’t know who I like in this fight, I want Nog, I am tired of seeing Randy win the belt and loose it immediatly afterwards. He has all those title fights but he has never defended succesfully more then 2 times. People keep forgetting that Mir beat Nog coming off of a horrid staph infection. That is why Nog looked so crappy.

by Da Monkey on Aug 23, 2009 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree…against the fence NOG will have problems pulling guard if he needs to…he needs to utilize footwork and stun Randy like Brock did BEFORE taking it to the ground

by McArthur on Aug 23, 2009 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions

He can’t avoid the fence because the cage is Randy’s home. The fence is his ally…

by Syd on Aug 23, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

my thoughts exactly.Randy held a man 60 lbs heavier, much stronger and about 12-15 years younger than him for a while with his back to the fence. Sounds like a good strategy but executing it is a different story

by SluggerCitySoldier on Aug 23, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

chuck liddell did it perfectly in the 2nd and 3rd meeting.

by shamo84 on Aug 23, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Nog is not the striker that Chuck was when he fought Couture. It is weird to see Nog’s coach talk about Couture’s punching power, since Nog isn’t exactly a Mike Tyson himself.

by naturalshadow on Aug 23, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy will put him on the cage and work the clinch. If it goes to the ground Im seeing Randy on top in half gaurd dropping hands and elbows. Frank out boxed Nog, and Im sure Nog thought the same thing about him. R

by RichT on Aug 23, 2009 1:36 AM EDT reply actions

Nogueira’s camp is idiotic. How are you gona stay way from the fence? It’s all around you. Plus I believe Randy has better power and wrestling over NOGueira.
Plus did you see how he(Randy) out boxed Tim Sylvia? Timmy was beating the sh!t out of Nog. until he sunk in the choke.
Randy will not gas out and he will problably keep it a stand up wrestling match.

by CARNAGE on Aug 23, 2009 1:37 AM EDT reply actions

Randy went the distance with big Timmy and Nog finished him. Regardless of what was going on in the fight Nog did what Randy couldn’t, finish the Timmy. If you ever watch a Nog fight that is the way it is, he absorbs punishment, then sinks in the sub…He has made his career doing that, a rather succesful one at that.

by Da Monkey on Aug 23, 2009 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. If we’re going to judge them based on how they performed against the same opponent, Nogueira was able to manipulate Sylvia into a submission and finished the fight, while Couture outpointed him.

Irrelevant. That’s MMAth.

by PW on Aug 23, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Jase, why not look at it this way, Tim was pounding on Nog before getting caught. Randy pounded on Tim for 5 rounds! What does that MMA-math say to you?

by JV on Aug 23, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly JV,Randy dominated Sylvia! Nog took a beating for about 13-14 minutes, then finally got it to the ground and subbed him. If you ask me I think Randy’s strategy was a little smarter. I just don’t see Randy losing this fight. Nog is gonna look like sh*t just like he did in the Mir fight. He’s all done, just like Chuck. Some people are just too beat up to continue a long lifed career in MMA. Look at Nog, he looks like he’s older than Randy!

by allamerican on Aug 23, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Silvia was not at 100% He didn’t even put up a fight. Besides Timmy got suprised more than anything by that right hand he wasn’t rocked at all. Randy has no power standing or on the ground. His ending flurry on Gonzaga was borderline pathetic.

by Vulcano on Aug 23, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

How was Sylvia not at 100%? And excuse me if i LOL, but, he “didn’t put up a fight” because Randy was controlling him and beating him at his own game the whole time! It doesn’t mean you have to KO someone to end a fight. If Randy can put Nog on queer street and get Nog to stop defending himself, the fights gonna get stopped! Nog is just too stubborn in his ways and is done evolving. We’ve seen his best days and they’re in his past! He hasn’t changed at all since joining the UFC. Randy will have his way with Nog in this fight just like he did a much bigger Sylvia.

by allamerican on Aug 23, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

How about needing back surgery and on the sidelines for a year afterwards. Timmy practically gave that belt away. I mean come on was that not his most horrible performance or what. He did so much better with Monson who had the same gameplan as Randy. Not a Silvia fan I just didn’t think Randy earned the title shot or the belt for that matter and I’d hate to see him get another title shot after just one win.

by Vulcano on Aug 23, 2009 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it was not. His most horrible performance was against Mercer. haha.

I don’t think Randy’s ending flurry looked bad at all against Gonzaga, especially when you consider the fact that Randy did that with a broken arm!

by naturalshadow on Aug 23, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah thats gony be tough for nog to do against randy!

Randy may not have ko power but he does punch fairly well, we have seen that in has last couple of fights in particular and if anything his power has increased. I also dont think nog has ko power, this is more than likely a decision win, or tko via ground strikes for randy or submission by nog.

by mo on Aug 23, 2009 1:48 AM EDT reply actions

by attakdog on Aug 23, 2009 6:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I saw the fight and the fact of the matter is he was apparently good enough to fight and got outclassed on the feet by a guy that isn’t really known for his standup. I’m sick of these guys that blame their losses on a staph infection or some other type of injury they fought with. I’m not saying he didn’t have a staph infection, but if it’s really that bad then don’t fight! It’s as simple as that. And I am a fan of Nogueira’s, but to make that excuse is just pisspoor

by RT on Aug 23, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Nog was halfway KO’d before he got into the ring. The wonderful world of the Staph infection! So Mir’s accomplishments are not so amazing.

by Da Monkey on Aug 23, 2009 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Watch Randy get TKO’d. That’d be something. Randy needs to start getting used to using the his wrestling more regularly because striking isn’t the best strategy for an aging fighter. Even if its Randy Couture.

oh yeah couture did drop silva, but he didnt finish- fedor did. anyways- this is going to be good. randy may not have ko power and slick submissions but he is a excellent greco roman wrestler, not easy to take down and 99percent of the time will win in a battle of wills. i really do think standing up- advantage couture. ground- advantage nog.

I’m a big fedor fan-lats make it clear but he sucks not going to the ufc, but that doesnt mean ill stop being a fan of him. OT- lenar vs carwin- NICE!

IMO, randy has better stand up than nog. if standing and trading doesnt work for randy in the first few minutes, he’ll use his wrestling to take nog down. couture by tko or decision.

I like both guys. But it does seem like the UFC has started a senior citizen division.
