M-1 'Breakthrough' fight card finalized for Kansas City on Aug. 28

Kansas City, Kansas -- With less than one week to go until Friday's "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH" event live from the historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City, M-1 Global officials have released the final 12-bout card.
With six televised bouts scheduled to air during the HDNet telecast (10:00 p.m. ET, check local listings for channel availability) plus a special sparring exhibition between M-1 fighters Fedor Emelianenko and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi, a five-bout undercard has been assembled for the local crowd planning to attend (doors open at 7:00 p.m. CT).
With its main card anchored by the United States debut of former NCAA champion "King" Mo Lawal and former NCAA All-American Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr, the undercard will be headlined by 8-1 Spanish heavyweight sensation Rogent Lloret taking on the latest addition to the M-1 Global roster, Russian heavyweight Alexey Oleinik.
Also featured on the undercard will be a dynamic lightweight matchup between Eric Marriott (13-1, fighting out of Lees Summit, Missouri) and Tim Bazer (9-6, fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska).
Training out of Team Grindhouse, rumors have been circulating that the gifted Marriott is currently being scouted by World Extreme Cagefighting and Strikeforce. As such, Marriott's fight vs. Bazer this Friday could be his last in the Kansas City region for quite some time.
Also scheduled for the undercard is an intriguing lightweight matchup between veteran Sean "P-Town" Wilson (18-9, fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska) and multi-time Army Combatives champion Josh Orocho (11-6, fighting out of Manhattan, Kansas).
Additionally, welterweight Rudy Bears (9-3, fighting out of Kansas City, Missouri) will look to test himself versus nine-year veteran Brendan Seguin (18-5, fighting out of Detroit, Michigan). Seguin, coming off a recent first round TKO victory over former UFC veteran Ryan Madigan, has his sights on ending Bears' five-fight win streak in front of Bears' friends and family.
Opening the card will be a special female attraction contested at 150 lbs. featuring the professional MMA debut of 2007 WKA Amateur Muay Thai Champion and multi-time Grappler's Quest winner Andria Caplan vs. rising Kansas City fight prospect Mollie Ahlers-Estes (1-0).
The complete finalized card is listed below:
12. Heavyweight (3x5): Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (4-0) vs. Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr (15-10)
11. Special Sparring Exhibition: "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko vs. "The Dreamcatcher" Gegard Mousasi
10. Middleweight (3x5): Lucio "The Spartan" Linhares (12-4) vs. Mikhail Zayats (8-3)
9. Heavyweight (3x5): Jessie Gibbs (8-2) vs. Rob Broughton (10-4-1)
8. Middleweight (3x5): Karl "Psycho" Amoussou (10-2-1) vs. "The Iron Bull" John Doyle (9-8)
7. Heavyweight (3x5): Lloyd "Kadillac" Marshbanks (17-8) vs. Michael Kita (5-3)
6. Lightweight (3x5): Daisuke Nakamura (19-10) vs. Ferrid "The Hurricane" Kheder (14-3)
5. Heavyweight (3x5): Rogent Lloret (7-1) vs. Alexey Oleinik (24-4)
4. Lightweight (3x5): Eric Marriott (13-1) vs. Tim Bazer (9-6)
3. Lightweight (3x5): Sean "P-Town" Wilson (18-9) vs. Josh Orocho (11-6)
2. Welterweight (3x5): Rudy Bears (9-3) vs. Brendan Seguin (18-15-1)
1. Female 150 lbs. (3x3): Andria Caplan (DEBUT) vs. Mollie Ahlers-Estes (1-0)
In addition to Lawal vs. Kerr, "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH" will also feature a special sparring exhibition between "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.
Additionally, number one Sherdog.com European MMA prospect Karl "Psycho" Amoussou will fight on live TV in the U.S. for the first time as he looks to end the Cinderella comeback of John "The Iron Bull" Doyle.
HDNET's telecast will begin on Friday, Aug. 28 at 10:00 p.m. ET with the local undercard at the Historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City beginning at 7 p.m. CT. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and all local Ticketmaster outlets.

Why do people care about this Mo guy fighting cans?
by Papa'mismo on Aug 23, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because that’s how you get better at fighting? Obviously this is a last minute replacement fight so it sucks but he’ll still get ring time, get to flex a different part of his game and refine his overall style. This is the best part of MMA people, watching talent and potential get fostered into a complete championship caliber package.

Womens got a 150lbs class now? Great, next it will be a fat b!tches weight class over 160 lbs to compete against the Jerry Springer WHW division!

i’m sorry nnr; but did you say that you get better by fighting cans? that’s a joke right? cause my understanding was that you get better by fighting guys who are better than you so you can challenge yourself and your abilities.

Are you going to make me list every great prospect ruined by terrible match making? You challenge your abilities once you actually get them. Until then you have to develop your game the proper way which is more ring time and opposition that will force you or allow you to test new creases in your style. It’s a gradual process, Fighting fedor or rampage in your fourth fight doesn’t make you better, it only gets you smashed out quick.

nnr you seem to be the expert here, please list all the great prospects ruined by terrible matcmaking. i have seen this said a few times before but i have yet to see this list, is it extensive?

Well it just depends on who you think had potential. I wouldn’t say extensive but wasted talent is all around sad business. It doesn’t happen as much now too coz people realize the value in having stars.
For example look at Sokoudjou -those 2 KO’s didn’t help his career. He didn’t have a cardio game, a grappling game or even a striking game for that matter. Still he had all the potential, he was dynamic, fast, very good judoka whose powerful base probly could let him be a good grappler.
Andrews Nakahara is matched with sakuraba on his first fight when it’s clear that he doesn’t have the groundgame or wrestling to have a chance.
Dong Sik Yoon though he was old had good potential to translate his game over to MMA but he was fed directly to wolves. Same with Pawel Nastula.
Bibiano Fernandes is making a big comeback but his first two fights were against Urijah Faber and Kid Yamamoto. The fact that he was able to hang with them says everything. He has a special talent and if only if his handlers had gotten him the right fights, he would probly already be a top 3 FW.
Everyone from Team Takedown is getting roasted now.
This list sucks though. I need someone with better memory. Someone think of people from pride like Hiromitsu Kanehara but who had talent or great accolades backing them.

okay, on a level i agree with you. but no one is asking mo to fight fedor or rampage. but mark kerr? last time i saw kerr he was in that YAMMA trainwreck looking fatter than my dad. i just looked up the video and he got subbed by taktorov who looked just as fat and slow. this reeks of kimbo fighting tank.
and isn’t mo a middleweight?

I went to buy my tickets on ticketmaster, and if you type “fedor” in the promo code box, tickets are 2 for 1, like marshall said. got 3rd row for 37.50 a piece. Probably the only time ill ever get to see fedor in person.

I missed the half off. That’s even more ridiculously cheap.

Seriously guys, how much were you expecting to pay for a card headlined by King (of the cans) Mo against Mark Kerr??? I know you’ll also see Fedor and his bum boy take it in turns to give eachother a reacharound, but I think you paid too much, even with the BOGOF promotion.

I take it you don’t live in the area attackdog. Jealous?

Nah mate, I live in England. Certainly not jealous, If that fight card was taking place in my front garden, I’d close the curtains.

To each their own. I like fights and this part of the country doesn’t get any pro MMA action. Also, looking forward to seeing Fedor in person, pending the cancellation of this card.

Well good luck to ya sun, I hope you have a good time.

Why would they go up against the UFC? Most fans will prefer to stay home and watch better fights for less money with their friends.

So sad. It really shows that without Fedor M1 is nothing. More people will want to see this to see Fedor than any real fight on the card.

Well, M-1 did say that they are committed to exposing fans around the globe to the “highest quality” MMA available.
Yeah…and, Michael Jackson was just teaching all the little boys how to dance.

This card is very good overall and for all you haters Mo Lawal is a future top 5 P4P fighter.
I should say to all the haters who’re Rampage nuthuggers.
Relax people King Mo was in an argument with Rampage not you personally. Let it go.

if he is a future top 5 p4p then why doesn’t he fight someone in the top 20 or 30 in his weight class?
