Frank Mir plans on striking with Cheick Kongo at UFC 107

Props: The DAM Show

Quoteworthy:

"I think the advantage of being well rounded is not having to force anything. As long as we're boxing with each other, I feel very comfortable against Cheick Kongo. Obviously I don't want to eat one of his knees, so I probably will try to strike with him a lot because if I just try to dive at him there's always a chance of taking one of those."

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir dishes on his planned fight against the hard-hitting Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee on December 12. Did his TKO win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 92 over-inflate his confidence in the stand-up game? Or does the Las Vegas native have the arsenal to stand and bang with the Parisian -- who is known for his poor wrestling defense? Predictions please.

Mir is just hyping his stand up for Kongo to hear. Mir will drag that dude to the mat and Kongo will be lost.

Mir by submission any way he wants…

Agreed Mir will work Kongo and hopefully we get to see a second fight against NOG to see if the first was really a fluke like some are saying?

by Puck Head on Aug 21, 2009 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

check congo would be a beast if he had some decent takedown defense, obviously the trainers at wolfslair are a buch of idiòts.

by shamo84 on Aug 21, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why are they a bunch of idiots ? sometimes with fighters they just arnt realy that good at some things ? aka can u imagine matt hughes being good at flying knees and round house kicks ?

by boyer on Aug 21, 2009 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kongo is going to punch Mir, Mir falls down, Kongo decides it’s a good idea to go to the mat with him, Frank locks in a choke. Game over.

by PW on Aug 21, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why does this make the wolfslair a bunch of idiots cause congo cant do takedown defence ? some people just cant do some things no matter how much they try lol can u imagine matt hughes doing flying knees and round house kicks to the head ? doesnt make his camp a bunch of idiots though does it ?

by boyer on Aug 21, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Was it wolfslairs idea too to get Bizzzzbing to circle into Hendo’s big right??

by attakdog on Aug 21, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or Wolflair’s idea to have Kongo stop punching Cain and grapple with him?

by PW on Aug 21, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

congo cannot wrestle because he is not training with world class wrestlers like gsp does and that is as simple as that.

I have got too much patience.

by shamo84 on Aug 21, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No but it reflects on Wolfslair when fighters don’t stick to their game plan. Its saying they train themselves and they think themselves better than their corners and when in a fight you see common moronic mistakes it shows that Wolfslair isn’t a place you want to be. The fact that it appears Wolflair has no round fighters is a little evident. I’m looking at Kongo, Bisping and Rampage.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 21, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

id put rampage as a world class MMA wrestler, but thats just his naturual talent. i doubt kongo learns much. that being said kongo probably won’t even learn good takedown defense

by Jared on Aug 21, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No offense to Rampage but he isn’t the greatest on the ground. Good gnp cause of his power and amazing slams but if it were for his natural strength he wouldn’t be able to force himself out of those type of situations. He would look much like he did against Forrest on the ground.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 21, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Mir stands with Kongo he will get smashed. Badly. For Kongo’s sake I hope he isn’t tempted to follow him to the mat, though.

LOL Dogg. Hey, where is this Bisping/Kang rumor at 105 coming from? That is a weak-ass main event if it’s true. Damn, it’s too bad Wand went all Joan Rivers on us, that was the only chance of a big-name MW taking on Bisping.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 21, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well apparently its now BJ versus Sanchez (believe it when I see it). But Kang vs Bizzzzbing is definitely on the card. That’s just papering over the cracks anyway, the rest of the card is so dire no main event could possibly save it!

by attakdog on Aug 21, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

MMABAY exclusively revealed the Bizzzzbing fight early this afternoon.

by attakdog on Aug 21, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d be delighted if it’s BJ/Sanchez for you guys, that’s a hell of a title fight!

That being said, it seems unlikely for three reasons.

1). BJ is a little bitch who doesn’t want to fight overseas OR aparrently in Vegas (how the hell long can he keep that up? who the hell does he think he is?).

2). The UFC is running low on title fights ,and you’d think with a title on the line a week later, they wouldn’t give us one for free.

3). BJ/Sanchez is the most marketable LW fight EVER. You’d think they want to cash in on it with a PPV.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 21, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair K-Dog BJ-Diego would be a superb main event and would sell me on the card, Bisping-Kang isn’t that bad a fight as long as it is promoted as an undercard fight, as it would be a dreadful and meaningless main event but as a standalone fight could be fun to watch.

by David W-S on Aug 21, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i did hear the corner of bisping saying stop moving into dans big right its pathetic. i also know bisping has great takedown defence i used to train with him. u cannot blaim the wolfslair for what happened to congo that night he just has rubbish take down defence lol

by boyer on Aug 22, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s up to Wolfslair to train him in TD defence!!!!! What the hell is he training with those clowns for if they cant even teach him that?

If you ask me wolfslair didnt shout loud enough at Bizzzzbing, either that or Bizzzy has so little respect for anything they have to say he chose to totally disregard it. Either way Bizzzzbing’s sh!t and so are Wolfslair.

by attakdog on Aug 22, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They told him when he was fighting AND during the break. Bizz just always does that and refuses to change it. He probably will now since he’s never been KO’d like that before…

by Elijah on Aug 26, 2009 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mir does have terrible Td’s, then again Kongo’s TD defence is awful, so you’re probably right. Wouldn’t surprise me if Frank tries to trade. He’s a big headed pr!ck and likely believes his standup is something spectacular having been the only man to TKO Nog, when in reality Nog was about 12% fit.

by attakdog on Aug 21, 2009 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It wouldn’t surprise me if Kongo’s killing Mir in the stand up and then his crack headed @ss shoots in for a double leg to take Mir to the ground.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 21, 2009 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha, he will do that for sure!

by shamo84 on Aug 21, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking the same. The guy is brain dead when it comes to tactics!

I’m whooping Cain in the standup, I know I’ll clinch with him.

I’m whooping Herring standing up, I know I’ll take him down, that’s bound to work out for me.

Beaver where are you at? This is it. I told you Cheick is gonna trounce Mir out of the UFC. Mir is gonna strike with him coz he won’t be able to take him down. You’ll see why Mir’s wrestling sucks and can easily be defended with no technique and sheer brute force. I’ve long said that Mir sucks, now you’ll see why he belongs with the Justin McCully’s of the world.

HAHAHA don’t you dare disrespect the Insane 1 NNR. No I like Mir and have for a while but he did get lucky on the first Brock fight and I have no interest in seeing him get his face smashed in by Brock again. I would like to see him beat Kongo because if you are one dimensional you should be gone… Kongo needs to go to K1 or something. Go fight HMC.. he’ll stand with you. Everyone else has Kongo figured out… let himi wear himself out beating you up standing and then take him down and submit him or GNP.. Mir by sub Rd. 1 3:55

Who laughs at Mir fans. You all like eating John out and believe anything he says. Mir belongs in the UFC, he doesn’t dodge opponents and he comes to fight. I admit he lost to right after he got back from his cycle accident but I bet he faces those two again he’ll trounce them. In terms of Brock yes he was supposed to lose, his main ability plays right into Brocks gnp. Cheick on the other hand is going to lose and rightfully so. I would like Mir to get a rematch with Nog and forget the stand up, give us a jits clinic. Mir Randy would also be a match I’m looking forward to. You never know maybe they’ll convince Mir to sign on to fight Anderson Silva (rumored on sher)

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 21, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kongo and Mir are a couple of deluded, arrogant idiots, Cheick is the most one dimensional fighter in the UFC and has no grappling skills whatsoever yet he keeps demanding title shots whilst Mir acts like he’s above everyone else when he’s not that good, sure he has decent jits but his striking is way overrated after the Nog fight, he won because Nog was awful that night not because he was good.

Hopefully both of these tossers will play into their opponents strengths so I get a laugh out of them before the fight ends in a double KO. I honestly couldn’t give a toss who wins and never want to see either of them anywhere near a title shot again.

by Alpha Male on Aug 21, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I almost wonder if this is misdirection on Mir’s part…or at least I hope so. If he means it, then I have to agree that his TKO win over Nogueira has over-inflated his confidence in his stand-up game.

by Jase on Aug 21, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Think the headline is misleading, in the quote he’s just saying he doesn’t plan on diving in and eating a knee during his shot for the TD.

“I PROBABLY will TRY to strike with him a lot "

doesn’t really sound like a commitment to going in there and trying to knock him out; just saying he wants to set up the shot better.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 21, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. It sounds more like he’s going to use the standup to set up the takedowns. I just hope he doesn’t eat too many setting them up. Pretty much every heavyweight fight I watch, I am going to root for the guy who has the best chance against Brock. In this case, it’s def Mir.

by Mahde on Aug 21, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, cool, since I’ve got to figure that against an opponent with as little takedown defense as Kongo that Mir would want to take advantage of that.

Mir goes downhill from here. He’s gonna come out to a very well prepared Kongo and get his ass handed to him. He wont have a single excuse, then his next fight he will also lose.

He beat Zombie Nog by not letting him get close enough to eat his brain, thus returning undead Nog to his normal 7/8 dead state.

by PW on Aug 21, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not trying to make excuses for Nog but IMO, Nog was a sleep walking, half dead, shell of himself in that fight against Mir. That has to be the only reason Mir won. Maybe even 3/4 dead. Hard to tell exactly just what percentage of dead Nog really was IMO. But he was definitely atleast 50% dead in that fight.

by Gurthee on Aug 21, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No excuses for Nog, as much as I like him he looked awful in that fight. Supposedly it was due to a staph infection but in that fight Nog looked a shell of his former self. Mir came in better prepared and deserved the win, shame he couldn’t have faced a prime Nog so I could have seen him get smashed.

Man i know alot of ppl hate brock but at least hes not in love with himself like mir is. I wonder when the frank mir “AROD-esque” mirror kissing pictoral comes out, good god. Frank go ask Cain Velasquez about Kongos stand up and the spaghetti legs he got from it 3 times. I agree with the above, its all stupid talk from Mir, Cheick is a one dimensional and weak fighter why would u purposely fight to the one advantage he has. I hope he does stand up with him so Kongo can take him out and shrink that Massive Mir ego a bunch more.

by JerichoRiley on Aug 21, 2009 10:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nothing will shrink his ego. It is incredible. Right after Lesnar smashed him he commented that if he was 10 pound heavier the fight would of gone a completely different way. If the 10 pounds was a loaded pistol maybe! Before the fight there was an interview with Mir with him talking about how Brock claimed that he got lucky their first fight. His comment was that Lesnar was just whining and that he should hit harder and excuses are for losers. When he loses he is full of excuses. I am not a big Lesnar fan, but I cannot stand Mir’s arrogance.

On this fight I think that Mir is just hyping and he is going to try to get it to the ground fast. I think he realizes that if he loses this fight he will lose the rest of his credibiltiy and then no one will listen when he talks about how great he is.

Also, Mir vs Velasquez would be a good match.

Nothing to do with strength, more to do with the fact he’s fought nobody with any submission skills.

Frank Mir is a vagina. He got dismantled by Brock. Twice. Although Mir won the first, he still got hammered. Kongo will win. Reach and kicks will win. His ground game is ok. He will be fine.

alot of you guys are forgetting Mir’s extreme lack of wrestling. how will he get Kongo to the ground without the skill or raw strength to do so? yes, Kongo has no wrestling either, but there’s no doubt that he’s stronger than Mir, and when two guys are at the same level of wrestling (in this case, that level is garbage), it usually comes down to who’s stronger. no excuse for Nog, but he was hospitalized like a month or so before the Mir fight, and was battling staph. alot of the people close to him supposedly tried to pull him from the fight, but he went on anyway at about a quarter of his usual strength. i think the Nog-Couture fight proved to everyone that Nog is not washed up, and the Mir fight was likely a fluke. so, without the wrestling or the striking to deal with Kongo, i just don’t see Mir winning without Kongo making a huge mistake…although Kongo making a mistake is extremely likely.
what is it with wolfslair guys doing dumb shit in fights anyway?

i dont think mirs wrestling is as bad as everybody thinks. he was the state heavyweight wrestling champ Nevada. who knows how good his striking really is, there is always a punchers chance for each man. and lets face it frank is more well rounded. frank should take it via submission. oo and as for strength watch his new strength training vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oPRunkqc7I he is finally working on strength so his takedowns might be good…..
