UFC 106: Shane Carwin will face Brock Lesnar on Nov. 21

Undefeated heavyweight behemoth Shane Carwin has been pulled from his Oct. 24 bout against fellow fast-rising prospect Cain Velasquez to fight current champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

Rumors began to circulate last night after MMAmadness.com broke the news and MMAmania.com has since been able to confirm the big shake up.

Carwin and Velasquez were originally paired up for UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., to determine a number one contender for Lesnar's title.

With Randy Couture and Antonio Nogueira having already committed to the main event of UFC 102, there were some concerns within the organization that a suitable opponent would not be found for Lesnar by year's end following his destruction of Frank Mir at UFC 100.

There was also the possibility of eliminating two major prospects within the division in a very short period of time had the winner of Carwin vs. Velasquez gone on to be defeated by the champ.

Velasquez will still compete at UFC 104 as scheduled opposite Ben Rothwell, and with a victory, would likely face the winner of Lesnar vs. Carwin at some point in 2010.

UFC 106 is expected to feature MMA elder statesman Mark "The Hammer" Coleman as he welcomes the return of the surgically repaired "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz in a 205-pound clash.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this developing fight card as it becomes available.

WOW! Time for Carwin to put up or shut up. He was trying to make himself (Carwin) look like a hero. But he should have learned from Mirs mistake about talking trash. This will be a nail biter, Carwin can put anybody to sleep at any givin time. And Lesnar is just an animal!!!

Lesnar takes this fight even faster than he beat Randy. Carwin is good, just not good enough.

by jay on Aug 20, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Having already headlined fight cards is a sizeable advantage for Lesnar. Carwin has arguably only had one high profile fight. Both guys are still inexperienced, but fighting at the top of a card with the belt at stake is an experience different than Carwin has known. For this reason, I expect Lesnar to fight a calmer, more tactically sound fight, and catch Carwin being reckless. From the UFC’s standpoint, I completely understand the move, but I believe Carwin could have benefitted from the Cain fight (even a loss) before experiencing a title shot.

by CL on Aug 20, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if Lesnar requested the fight himself. I wouldn’t find it difficult to believe that this would have been a direct reaction to Carwin’s comments. To Carwin, I can only say be careful what you wish for.

I’ve only seen Carwin’s fight with Gonzaga. I know he’s a wrestler, but how’s his takedown defense? I think this fight is going to come down to Carwin’s ability to keep the fight standing. I am highly skeptical that Carwin will be able to take Lesnar down, but I’m not sure how powerful of a wrestler he is. If Carwin can keep this fight on it’s feet, it’s basically power vs. power and whoever lands the best shot wins.

by HamishCampbell on Aug 20, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believe the experience advantage is with Lesnar. Carwins only been in with one top 20 guy (Gonzaga), prior to that fight he was beating up on some British can Neil Wain in one of the biggest mismatches since UFC 3. Whereas Lesnar has been nothing but tested against top guys in all his UFC fights.

Finally a battle of the giants. About time the UFC puts on a fight with two super HW. Let’s hope the octogon can handle these two freaks and doesn’t collaps, should be a great battle. LESNAR by TKO

by TaPouT on Aug 20, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the most interesting aspect of this fight is which guy is going to find themselves on their back. You have to think that both of these guys are going to look for a takedown since neither has ever found themselves on their back.

by Buster Bluth on Aug 20, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WOW, i honestly dont know who to pick here, lesnar has to be the favourite but either 1 could end it at any moment, lesnars chin is yet to be fully tested, carwins was tested by gonzaga, he was rocked by gonzaga and i’m pretty sure lesnar will hit harder than he did, on the other had carwin has big power and KO lesnar, anyone betting big money on this is insane because it could go either way, i have to give lesnar the wrestling advantage but i still dont think it will be easy for him to take carwin down, sure gonzaga did but he caught him off guard and he probably didnt expect it, anyone fighting lesnar knows its just a matter of time before he shoots so carwin should be expecting it, i can see lesnar TKO’ing carwin on the ground but i can also see carwin landing a big shot and finishing lesnar on the feet, i honestly dont know which way to go with this but it should be a good fight

I think the only way to do this fight justice is have a casket match.

Carwin is close to Brock’s size and astrength, but nowhere near as good an athlete. Lesnar is going to drive him into the cage and pound on him.

by PW on Aug 20, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carwin ain’t a chump PW.

Courtesy of Wikipedia:
“He wrestled in college, becoming a two-time NCAA Division II Wrestling National Runner-Up Heavyweight in 1996-7, and the NCAA II Wrestling Heavyweight National Champion in 1999. He was also a two-time All-American in football.”

Carwin doesn’t have the pedigree Brock has, but his athletic achievements shouldn’t be overlooked either.

by HamishCampbell on Aug 20, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carwin got stunned by Gonzagas blow imagine when he gets hit by Lesnar’s “lunchboxes”. Lesnar’s first KO will be Carwin. Just a wild guess.

by Michael on Aug 20, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not comparing achievements. I’m saying nobody in the UFC, other than GSP, has Brock’s athletic ability. Carwin is slow and plodding, while Brock is fast and explosive.

Truth!

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

carwin is also a better boxer with more powerful punches, bigger mitts, and a proven chin (um, three overhand rights in a row from gonzaga should end you, but it didnt, and then he recovered and punched gabe’s head off). lesnar didn’t like getting hit by couture for fcuks sake. this is brock’s biggest test. and he will fail.

by Hardcase on Aug 20, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brock the Cock is going to sleep here. Carwin FTW. I’ve been saying Carwin will KO Brock, and it will happen. Big stage for sure, but Lesnar has never fought a dude with big power. If Mir had him “seeing tweetie birds” then for sure, Carwin will put his lights out.

You can’t knock on Carwin for the Gonzo fight either. Some say that he got rocked by Gonzo and almost got KO’d. Yeah, but he DIDN’T. Gonzo hits pretty damn hard, and for Carwin to take TWO of those punches in a row, and get taken down, only to get up from under him and KO him right back, thats more PROPS than knocking on him.

Carwin FTW and to save the HW division.

by Synyster on Aug 20, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why do people compare brock with carwin wrestling? d2 is like putting the sacramento river cats against the yankees.. brock won the D1 national title and only lost 1 time throughout his collegiate career, carwin won 2 national titles but against b level competition.. no comparison in wrestling abilities there brock takes it hands down..

athletic ability goes to brock
strength to brock
speed to brock
experience on the big stage brock by far (WWE is good for the big stage experience and nerves, can’t say it isn’t because more people are there watching)
and carwin couldn’t stop gonzaga taking him down so now you have a matt serra vs gsp situation all over again

As I’ve said before Carwin is a lot smarter than people give him credit for, there is no way that he would have been given a title shot if he hadn’t have insulted Lesnar and played the role of the hero. Now despite only beating one top 10 HW he has been fastracked for a title shot because the UFC know that a Lesnar-Carwin fight would sell, there is going to be a lot of hyping up before this fight and it should be a classic hero v villain match-up between the two biggest and strongest HWs in the UFC.

If Cain had have challenged Brock and criticised his actions then he wouldn’t have been snubbed, hopefully he’ll learn the importance of self-promotion and will keep up the momentum in his next fight.

Both guys are excellent wrestlers with powerful strikes, I’d say that out of every HW in the UFC Carwin has the best chance to beat Brock because he won’t be outsized and can hold his own wrestling wise, plus proved in the Gonzaga fight that he can get off his back quickly and recover from adversity. Brock’s chin has been questioned and Carwin has proven KO power in his hands so this is going to be a tough ask for Brock. This one won’t last too long and whoever lands the first big punch or gets the first takedown will win the fight.

by David W-S on Aug 20, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The same can be said about Brock Syn…Mir had him seeing tweetie birds, but he DIDN’T got KO’d.

Man sorry again for last night buddy, I thought about it when it was 12:00 am! You can call me names now!

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Up until yesterday, 99% of the people here thought that there were ZERO HW’s on the UFC roster that can defeat Brock Lesnar. Now that they just promote Carwin to a title fight for no just reason other than “Brock needs an opponent” and 50% of the people are saying Carwin will win? WHAT??

Sure he has a chance, but where were all of these people after UFC 100? All I was hearing was that Brock was going to be the most dominant champ ever.

Carwin can only win this fight with a big punch standing. Brock can end it with a big punch standing (less likely to do so than Carwin though), or he can win by GnP TKO or he can win by decision – although I do not see these two behemoth’s going 5 full rounds.

If I had to lay opening odds on this fight, I’d say -240 for Brock and +160 for Carwin (which would be an attractive bet.

With the HW title being defended on this card, that will push back Penn/Sanchez and Anderson/Hendo to the 108 and 109 cards (Jan and Feb) at the earliest. I highly doubt the December 107 card will have a title on the line.

They are hyping the Rashad/Rampage fight with UFC Primetime shows a la GSP/Penn, and it makes no sense to make an expensive three-episode hype machine fot that fight and then make it a co-main event under a title fight.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 20, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alpha- No worries on last night. I haven’t been on the PSN for a while. Moving back down to Florida for college and whatnot.

On your post though- I think Carwin being rocked and surviving vs Gonzo is a higher cred than being rocked by MIr and surviving. Gonzo is known for having some real good power, and winning a bunch of fights by (T)KO. Mir has TKO’d Wes Sims, and losing by TKO to Mir would have been ULTRA-humilitating, wheras losing by TKO to Gonzo is just as respectable as losing by sub to him.

I think more people would be surprised by Mir TKO’ing Brock than Gonzo TKO’ing Carwin.

VM- I have been one of the few who have said Carwin is the man to get it done. I know alot of guys come on here before and after and say “I told everyone”, but I’ve been sticking with Carwin since UFC 84.

what did Carwin say about Brock?

by SluggerCitySoldier on Aug 20, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carwin is dangerous for sure the main concern for Carwin being ligit is what is his ground game like and what kind of endurance does the man have. I don’t think Carwin will KO Brock at least in the first round and Brock will test both his ground game and endurance wich his camp and coaches said is great we will find out? For all those guy’s saying Brock was hurt after Mir and Randy’s shot are full of it he took the shot and was easily able to defend himself or take the other guy down yes Carwins power is much more dangerous than any fighter in MMA. I can’t wait for this battle I believe this could be one of the greatest HW fights ever with two future MMA legends!

by Puck Head on Aug 20, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

SluggerCity — Carwin just made the same mistake Mir and Herring did by throwing the WWE in Brock’s face. then suggested that Velasquez is somehow on the same level as Brock.

“He may be a Champion but he has a long ways to go before he earns the respect of a Champion. The fans are why we do this Brock, this sport is not about fat paychecks and drama it is about hard work and sacrifice for a shot to do what you did last night. It doesn’t matter how much money you make if you can’t earn your peers respect and the respect and love of the greatest sporting fans in the world. We have no scripts in this sport, no pre-determined earning amount and no pre-determined outcomes.”

“The thing is I have a very tough fight ahead of me that IMO is every bit as tough and talented as Brock.”

by PW on Aug 20, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Syn
lol, I didn’t know that being rocked by Gonzaga was more gratifying than being rocked by Muur. Now 75% of this site is gonna hate you for saying that Mir isn’t a great striker.
They both are mediocre standing up and a lots of peoples think that Mir did improve his striking lately.

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Does anyone know Carwins reach? I know that Lesnars is listed as being 81 inches. This could be a factor. Also, Carwin has Greg Jacksons camp behind him. They could come up with a gameplan to beat Lesnar. Randy had a pretty good game plan but he hadn’t anticipated the reach advantage. Carwins camp will note that. Of course, Carwin is no Couture.

by RyanHobbs on Aug 20, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brock got a lot of heat for getting a title shot too soon. I think the same can be said for Carwin. how can beating two cans and a guy who in my opinion was no longer a contender get you a title shot. It’s not like Carwin fought real competition outside the UFC either.

Also, it’s interesting how easy Brock’s abilities are taken for granted. Most think that he is only power and size, but Lesnar has very good technique. Watch the fight with Couture, when Randy takes his back he makes one of the best wrestling sweeps I have seen to get Randy to the ground, at least something no other wrestler has done it in the UFC.

Brock will definitely win this one.

by fmx on Aug 20, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alpha, in a K-1 match, I think Gonzo would beat Mir. I do think Mir has VASTLY improved his stand up game, but it isn’t on the level of Gonzo’s yet, who, along with “mediocre” technique, has PROVEN to have some good power along with it.

by Synyster on Aug 20, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand your point that Gonzaga got more power in his hands than Mir, Syn. But Carwin got rocked by a punch and Brock got rocked by a knee, bud.

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But according to Mr. Einstein above, aka Puck Head, people who think Lesnar was rocked by Mir are “full of it”, Alpha. Never mind the fact that Lesnar himself said he was seeing “tweety birds” after those shots. The reason it looked like he recovered so quickly is because he was in such close quarters with Mir that he was already holding Frank and just had to fall on him. If those shots had connected with some distance between them, Lesnar would have been in some trouble.

And Puck Head, saying Carwin is a “future MMA legend” is pretty dumb. He is 34 and has ONE impressive victory, that coming over a barely top ten HW in Gonzaga. If he doesn’t beat Lesnar he has little to no chance of ever being considered a legend. It just reaffirms that you know jack shit about the sport or what being a “legend” even entails. You must be a chubby mofo, because you’re always out to lunch.

Also, it’s become pretty tiresome watching you and your girlfriend Beaver come to each other’s defence all the time and regurtitate what each other is saying, especially when we know you guys are friends in real life and work together. Do you gals talk on the phone together about how it’s time to spew out more run-on-sentence diarrhea that basically consists of saying that MASH reruns are more exciting thsn Strikeforce and Affliction cards? How many times do you turds have to use the term “us fans” during your childish tantrums, as if YOU speak for the fans or have even been one for long enough to have watched Pride or the other orgs that helped make MMA what it is today?

Yep, it’s pretty gutless. I don’t think it’s an accident that “Beaver” is a synonym for “pussy”. Go look up synonym, genius. And while you’re at it, look up “period” and “coma” as well. It might help you type posts that aren’t reminiscent of an ADD-afflicted 8-year old blathering out nonsense in a 200-word unintelligible run-on sentence.

Keep trying, guys. Your next good point will be your first.

Puckhead – Legends?!?!?!?!? I have been trying to be more……shall we say… fluid in my comments as to not rub people the wrong way. That has to pause. Carwin is relatively untested. His biggest win is against an underachiever who almost took him.

Lesnar even said himself he was dazed.

I know everyone wants this to be more than what it is, but Carwin has a punchers chance. If Lesnar gets him down it is over!

Bro you should really look at the whole picture, really investigate what your talking about…… Legends please. They are both a long long way away from that.

And don’t say he fought all cans because there’s another guy that is considered by some as the best HW in the world that fought many cans yet his were more worthy cans for some reason?

Don’t worry, you can nurse F@ck Head/KOrwin back to health tomorrow at work, with a lunch-hour backrub and reach-around.

Buentello and Yvel would get smashed by Cain, neither have a ground game so stylistically they’d be perfect opponents for him. Hopefully Cain learnt from the Kongo fight to play to his strengths and won’t try to stand with superior strikers (though I don’t rate Buentello at all and I think Cain could outstrike him and win by KO).

This sucks. 104 was an epic card with an exciting #1 contender’s match. If a card looks too good to be true, it usually is. They are trying to milk two title fights out of these undefeated HW prospects instead of letting a clear contender emerge from a fight between them. I was surprised that the UFC would give the fans a #1 contender fight like Carwin/Velasquez and lose a potential title fight in the process. Now I see I was right to be surprised.

I bet Velasquez sits and waits and fights nobody (or a can) until he takes on the winner of this one. Very disappointing. Dana was just talking about how boxing never gives you the undefeated #1 contender fight because they want to make the most money possible out of their contenders, and in the process the fans get screwed. Looks like things aren’t any different in MMA, huh Dana.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 20, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Were Yvel and the HeadHunter picked up by the UFC???

by ViolentMike on Aug 20, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are probably the same guy who complains about people not defending their titles enough. Geez… You care more about #1 contender fights?

by BNF on Aug 20, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I care about cards being stacked and the fights we were promised actually happening. Carwin/Lesnar would have been epic AFTER Carwin had proved himself by destroying Velasquez.

The UFC needs to do a better job of always having proven contenders ready to fight for the title. They should match up their great fighters in each division against each other more often, so this crap and the Swick/Kampmann crap isn’t necessary. Dana and co are always thinking they will save the big fights for later, but there are enough good fighters on the roster that there will always be big fights on the horizon. If there is an opportunity to match up two of the best in a given division, that fight should be made NOW instead of later.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 20, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There you are…I thought that it wasn’t a so bad idea JJ, but I understand your disappointment! At least Cain will remain a good contender while other guys will try to be the next in line for the #1 contender match up!

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah. I have a feeling Dana thinks Randy will beat Nog, and they don’t want another Randy/Lesnar fight. The winner of Cro-Cop/Dos Santos will be making a BIG leap up the ranks of the division now.

Yup, for sure!

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I completely agree with JJ. There are enough fighters on the roster that every fight should be that of high quality on PPV. Fighter such as Carwin and Cain you only see on PPV and I would bet that JJ is again right that Cain fights a can at best. The card for 104 needs some first aide quick if it will be a worthy PPV.

As for Lesnar/Carwin. I have watched that Gonzaga fight over and over and here is what I see.

Carwin looks to have lost some size probably in an effort to become quicker but he is no longer cutting to get under 265 that is for sure so he will still be outsized on fight night by about 15 to 20.

I think it is safe to say that Brock will be able to take him down that is a problem.

He was moving forward on Gonzaga very quickly and that will end up with him on his back with Lesnar were he does not want to be. Instead of standing with him like Gonzaga did for a bit Lesnar will just change levels(faster than anyone Carwin has fought before) and take him down.

I hope Carwin changes his gameplan drastically or this will look just like 100. For those that are going to say Carwin was a wrestling champ in college blah blah blah.. he is in no way in the same league as Lesnar on this and should focus on his strengths and keeping this on the feet.

A #1 contender fight is pretty rare and for good reason. Most of the time in a fight with top ranked guys 1 guy will get a title shot with a win and his opponent may not. There are also many factors involved, how the fight is finished, was it boring, marketability, ect… I just like that Brock is staying active. That is more than I can say for some other fighters. A 4-1 Champion is fighting an 11-0 challenger and he isn’t ready? And since when does a win over Cain make you the #1 contender. You wouldn’t be saying that if the Gonzaga fight never happened. The point is this is a quality HW title fight with the most deserving fighter at the moment.

by BNF on Aug 20, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL @ “You wouldn’t be saying that if the Gonzaga fight never happened.”

We wouldn’t be saying anything about any fight if the fight before it hadn’t happened! What does that even mean?

And regarding “The point is this is a quality HW title fight with the most deserving fighter at the moment.”

Yes, it is a quality HW title fight, but the point of this #1 contender’s match was establishing a legit contender, which would have made it a much more meaningful title fight. Instead, the UFC has opted to keep both of their contenders’ records intact, robbing the fans of a legit contender and setting up an absolutely pointless Lesnar/Cain fight next year, in which Cain will be destroyed.

I would rather see the Cro-Cop/Dos Santos winner fight Lesnar over Cain, who will probably get a shot based on an unconvincing win over Kongo and a presumably a victory over Rothwell.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 20, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude… You just said Carwin deserves a title shot with a win over Cain, but not Gabe? And in the same post you said Cain would be destroyed by Lesnar. So, my point, why is a fight with Cain necassary then? You, my friend, make no sense. How do you think Gabe would fair agaisn’t Lesnar?

And LOL @ the winner of Cro Cop/Dos Santos. That makes no sense whatsoever. Sorry man, I just don’t get your point.

by BNF on Aug 20, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I’ve been saying is that nobody deserves a title shot with only one victory over ranked opponents. A win over Cain would have legitimized Carwin. Alves and Florian didn’t just automatically get shots after beating one ranked guy, they beat several. That’s what made them legit #1 contenders. Even Mir had to beat Lesnar and Nog back-to-back to get a title shot.

And the reason I would rather see Cro-Cop or Dos Santos fight Lesnar over Cain is a simple one: styles make fights. Cain is a wrestler, and a tiny one compared to Lesnar. He stands no chance. Cro-Cop and Dos Santos, on the other hand, are accomplished strikers, and Brock’s weakness is striking. Therefore I think they have a better chance of catching him on the chin on the way in before they are taken down and pummelled. A small chance, for sure, but a chance nontheless – which is a lot more tha Cain has.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 20, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay… Well it doesn’t hurt that Carwin is 11-0 with all 1st round finishes, subs, KOs, and TKOs. You have to admit that is extremely impressive. And the first time he fought a legit dude he did the same exact thing.

And you keep talking about Cain, but he isn’t fighting for the title so it’s not even worth discussing. He may very well need 2 more wins before he gets a shot.

This is the same old thing with the HW division, there are just not as many good fighters as in other weight classes. So I don’t really think the comparison to Alves and Kenny is fair.

by BNF on Aug 20, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Carwin has looked really impressive, I just wanted to see him beat one more ranked guy. It’s not that this isn’t the best possible HW title fight, it’s just that I wanted to see a big contender’s match and a stacked 104 card first.

It bugs me that they are trying to set both Carwin and Cain up for Lesnar, instead of letting them work out who the top contender is themselves. It waters down the 104 card and gives us less bang for our buck in the long run. Also, I wanted to see Cain get knocked back down the ladder instead of set up for the next title shot, because I just don’t think he’s the real deal.

good debate, jj and bnf!~

u both make equally great points..

i agree that NO fighter should ever get a title shot with 1 quality win..

but i also feel that, right now, carwin is the most deserving number 1 contender.. 11-0 is impressive.. as well as having most 1st round ko’s in all his ufc fights..

imo~ carwin is more deserving of a title shot then brock was, back when he fought randy..

imo~ this fight makes way more sense then brock/randy ever did!!

the bottom line is, brock was supossed to fight fedor! the ufc couldn’t sign him, so is brock not supossed to fight for the rest of the year? fock that!!

while i like #1 contender fights too, i feel this fight had to be made and im glad it did..

bnf~ wins the debate, imo~

“the bottom line is, brock was supossed to fight fedor! the ufc couldn’t sign him, so is brock not supossed to fight for the rest of the year? fock that!! "

It’s a difference of two lousy months, stinky. This just means we’ll have to wait until January to see BJ or Anderson defend THEIR belts – and in the process the 104 card takes a huge hit. This way we miss out on anticipated HW fight that would have made Lesnar’s next defence much more exciting. They should have put Penn/Sanchez or Anderson/Hendo on this card and let Carwin and Velasquez determine who the true #1 is.

the difference is two extra lousy months, jj..

and thats saying carwin defeats cain without damage..

what if cain busts shanes nose open like gonzaga did?

imo~ make the title fights happen asap! i dont like waiting for title fights when i dont have to.

why should brock wait? he’s ready! carwin’s ready! get it on..~

i want to see the respected champs[all 5] defend every 4 months[max].. dont u?

heck, if it’s all good that fedor will most likely be fighting paul buentello, than u should be cool with brock fighting carwin for a title, rather than having him wait~

by Alpha Male on Aug 20, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When did I say I was cool with Fedor fighting Buentello? That would be a complete waste of a Fedor fight.

And once again… if the UFC put its top contenders head-to-head more often, we wouldn’t be having this discussion, because someone would always be proven and ready to step up. Don’t get me wrong, I think Carwin is the best possible opponent for Lesnar right now… I just think it’s as shame that it comes at the expense of a card and a fight I was really looking forward to.

And once again (sigh), there will be no titles on the line at 105 or 107, so this just pushes ANOTHER title defence back. We would have got a title fight on this card regardless.

r u fine with fedor getting a tune up fight, before he fights the “big fight”??..

i don’t know man, u make good points but i still think this was the best possible outcome for the hw division..

im out for the night~ i will be back in the morning to chat!

goodnight~

by ricky~dooby on Aug 20, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t say I’m “fine” with it. Just that I understand there is a lot more to his decision-making process than what we are privy to, and that Strikeforce is the second-best possible destination for him. I still really wanted to see him in the UFC, but I’m not going to cry about it or hate on him for it.

As far as a warm-up fight for Fedor goes, IMO Rogers WOULD be a warm-up fight for him and that’s who he should fight first. Then he should take on the winner of Overeem/Werdum (hopefully Overeem) and by that time there might be a new Strikeforce HW signed to give him his last fight on that contract… Randy Couture, mayhaps?

Shit, I promised not to comment on Fedor for a while. Look what you made me do, Stinker.

He could do it, Carwin hits hard and has the size and wrestling background to hang with Brock. Also, his story growing up I think is interesting. He is a tough guy that works very hard. I hope he takes time off of his job to train for this fight full-time. He has yet to do that I think, but this one I could see that happening. He could be better than ever if he puts 100 percent into the preperation. And he isnt getting any younger, maybe his first and last shot at the title, maybe one more after if he loses.

by slim473 on Aug 20, 2009 1:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Huge advantage wrestling though. Can’t see carwin being able to stop the TD so prepare to eat many oversized fists. As long as Brock doesn’t try and hang with him on his feet, I think he takes this one comfortably.

by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shane has a wrestling background too. Lesnar may still have a wrestling advantage though because he will have a 40 pound size advantage. GSP is a great wrestler, but how do you think he’d do against Dan Henderson (with GSP at 170 and Dan at 205)? Will be interesting to see if Shane can stuff the takedown.

by wAyNe on Aug 20, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lesnar is a better wrestler though! How many national titles has carwin got?? Combined with the size advantage Carwin’s gonna be spending a lot of time on his back.

by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shayne weighs in at 265 doesn’t he? If anything Brock will have a 20 pound advantage.

by jay on Aug 20, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought he was a bit under that, Lesnar will have about 25lbs come fight night I reckon. That’s a lot of extra weight in what could essentially turn into a grappling contest, especially if Brock’s on top for 5 rounds.

by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carwin stated in an interview a while back that he walks around at 280 lbs. and that he is the same size as Brock so that shouldn’t play a part in the fight.

by Silo on Aug 20, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe you’re right, i thought carwin was lighter.

by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Only real advantage Shane has is that Brock is going to have to cut weight. I personally hope Shane only drills on his TD defense, timing knees with takedowns, and working from his back. Those are the only things he should train on period if he wants to win this fight.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 20, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In my opinion, Lesnar has been able to neutralize all of his opponants due to his tremendous size advantage. If Carwin can at least get close to his weight, it will put more emphasis on their skillsets. I personally want to see if Brock can win if he has to rely on his skills. Again, he really hasn’t had to use any skills besides throwing his opponants around like ragdolls. Better match up for us fans when weight isn’t the major factor. If Couture didn’t weigh 40-60lbs less than Lesnar, I think he would have won easily.

by slim473 on Aug 20, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Slim, if a fighter weights 40/60 lbs less, then that fighter has no business in that weight class! Why would would it be the fighter that is a true HW’s fault?

by JV on Aug 20, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This reminds me a bit of GSP vs Alves. Everyone said GSP would struggle against Alves coz he wouldn’t have a big size advantage for once and look how that one turned out. GSP was able to take him down at will and I believe Lesnar will do the same.

Lesnar’s amateur wrestling credentials are as good or better than anyone in UFC. And last time out he took down Mir, a BJJ black belt, moved to side mount and pinned him so Mir could neither attack nor defend. Do NOT try to tell me that was just because of size and not skill.

attakdog… you say “How many titles has Carwin won?” … How many titles has GSP won? GSP has no credentials and is still a superior wrestler to everyone at 170. MMA wrestling and college wrestling are different things. Brock hasn’t done anything impressive with his 3 or 4 NCAA titles. He’s managed to lay on people. big deal.

What do you want him to do with his wrestling? Suplex people on their head and break necks? Wrestling doesn’t teach you how to do submissions or ground and pound. All your taught to do in wrestling is take your opponent down and keep them there, he does that job very well!

Not saying Brock has no skills, but his size certainly makes it easier. he hasn’t fought anyone matching his size yet. It will be interesting to see if his skills are as good as people think or it’s just his size that people can’t handle. Carwin gets closer in size to Lesnar than anyone he’s fought so far.

That was Anthony ‘Mad Dog’ Macias. I used to hang with him at this old nightclub in Dallas.

by PW on Aug 20, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe when Couture fought Lesnar, he came in at 220, when Lesnar was walking in the cage at around 280+. Pretty major weight difference in my book.

by slim473 on Aug 20, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Slim is right about the size difference. GSP / Alves is not a fair comparison. Sure GSP is big for a WW, but we’re talking a 60 pound advantage here. About a 20 pound advantage against Carwin. JV, to say a 240 pound man has no business in HW is ridiculous! Mir for example was like 245 I think in his last fight. Lots of guys in that division are that size. What’s a 240 pound guy like Mir going to do? Cut to LHW? Put on 40 pounds of muscle? Come on! Most HW’s aren’t the size of Carwin and Lesnar. The real answer is a super heavyweight division; but, there just aren’t enough monsters to put in that division. Besides, HW is arguably the weakest division as it is.

by wAyNe on Aug 20, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The UFC HW division is getting better and looks like it’s improving but guy’s there size with athletic ability don’t come out as often as any of the other divisions. I don’t think it matters who is better Fedor, Brock, my man Carwin ….whoever the UFC has the most valuable belt hands down whoever holds that belt has the #1 MMA belt period no other belt has the honor of the UFC’s.

This makes sense though. This way the UFC can keep Cain in reserve as a genuine contender, instead of having his future stock damaged by a loss to Carwin.

by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the fight I wanted to see and it makes sense. Cain is the Latin fan base boy so the UFC will keep him on ice and milk him for all that latin peso. If Brock can get passed Carwin it will be hard to argue that he does not belong in the UFC.

He’s got till November to pack on as much mass as he can. He must nuetralize the size advantage as much as possible. As stated, Carwin also has wrestling skills. Also he’s already demonstrated that he has a strong chin and can get up easily with a BJJ gorilla on top of him. If he can get that size gap down and eliminate Lesnar’s GNP he has the advantage on the feet IMHO.

I’m a Carwin fan but I know getting out of Gonzo ground game will be nothing like getting out of brocks that Fer looked tougher than some guy’s in MMA when he was 7 I seen that Bio on him and he was always one competitive mother. I think my man Carwin is one smart cookie and has the Brains and brawn to give Brock a run for his money but I think it’s going to be a war like we never seen before in the HW division?

by daniel worby on Aug 20, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, I’d like to see Brock on a card without GSP. I think his last 2 fights were on the same card and in my opinion GSP was the real main event in both cases. I still think GSP has more drawing power and I bet GSP vs. Kampmann/Swick will outdraw Brock vs. Carwin. No offense to either of them, I just think GSP has a bigger fanbase. Also, I want to see Carwin win. I think he’s just a beast. I really doubt Brock’s chin because he didn’t look great against Randy. I don’t know how he’ll do against a guy that KO’s Gonzaga moving back.

by Shadyone33 on Aug 20, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d say Brock might be the biggest draw in MMA right now. HW and LHW fights have always been the bigest draws, but HW has suffered lately because there hasn’t been that invincible-looking HW for a whike.

Lesnar has changed that. Not only is he freakishly large and athletic, but he is a galvanizing force in the sense that he has made a lot of fans hate him and want to see him defeated.

Honestly, I don’t think GSP vs Swick or Kampmann will sell that many PPVs – and this is coming from a huge GSP fan. I bet they put it on the year-end card with another title fight.

Awesome I can’t wait for this one! Although I’m not convinced he is deserving of a title shot but then again Brock wasn’t either. Although I would have like to have seen the Cain vs carwin fight first for the #1 contender spot first. Now we get to see how good carwin’s wrestling really is.

I guess we’ll find out how good Lesnar’s chin is. Carwin hits like a truck and I see him catching Brock.
I’m thinking Randy will beat Nog (via 3 round decision).
Then Randy vs Carwin early next year. Thats a close one but I’ll take Carwin

In the meantime Brock will get Nog or Cain and win.

Carwin vs Lesnar II next summer will be huge

I might be getting a little ahead of myself…haha

by Dave O on Aug 20, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

But we already know Carwin is a little suspect in the chin department… Gonzaga rocked him pretty good. It was a direct shot on the nose that broke it but if he isn’t blocking those then he’s really gonna be in trouble if 280 lbs of Brock’s fist hits him in the nose

by Sp00ner1234 on Aug 20, 2009 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point, but Carwin recovered very quickly and turned the fight around instantly. You’ve seen A. Silva and Fedor get hit and it just makes them more iintense. Carwin could shock the world here but more likely lesnar will lay on him until he sufficates.

Should be a good fight. I expect Carwin to give Brock his biggest test to date, though I can see some holes in Carwin’s game that Lesnar could exploit.

I expected Carwin to beat Cain anyway and get to this point, but if I was Velasquez, I might feel slighted for being passed over like this. I wonder what’s next for him?

by adam on Aug 20, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Face it, man. Brock’s size is too much for any of the heavy weights to handle except Carwin. If Brock can beat a fighter who he doesn’t outweigh, he answers quite a few questions about his skills beyond the massive weight he possesses. Remember, lesnar hasn’t fought that much, so if his weight is neutralized and he has to rely on skills, I see Carwin winning this fight.

by slim473 on Aug 20, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Muscle Dolphin on Aug 20, 2009 2:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Finally! I think Carwin has a decent chance beating Brock.

Size – even/very slight advantage to brock if any

Striking – Carwin

Wrestling – Brock

Submissions – Won’t be a factor

G n P – Brock

KO/TKO power – Both

Ability to take punishment – Carwin since we haven’t seen brock rocked yet

by Bob on Aug 20, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think submission will be a factor, but Shane has ended 4 fights by sub so he does have some skills.

by BNF on Aug 20, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see Carwin catch him in an armbar or something…his hands and more importantly his grip strength will allow him to get up if need be or move more freely on the ground if he finds himself on the bottom….Brock’s poor cardio will be exposed in this fight

by McArthur on Aug 20, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point Mac… I would like see Shane use his wrestling keep the fight standing and really test Brock’s chin with strikes and put him on his back. That will be VERY unfamiliar territory for Brock. So to answer your question from above I want Carwin to win this fight and I think he has a legit shot at it too.

by Arroyo13 on Aug 20, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Disagree about that. Cain is too small to deal with Brock’s wrestling. He’s a great wrestler too, but the size/strength disparity is too great. Add to that the fact that Cain is not amazing on his feet (see Kongo fight) and you have a recipe for a steamroll.

Carwin’s striking power is what gives him a shot. And he’s big enough to not get rag dolled. That is all, but it is definitely something.

by Reservoirdog119 on Aug 20, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great news! Battle of the Silverbacks. Good call making this match happen now and preserving Cain for a potential shot down the road.

Brock has already proven he is for real, but this is the last test to prove that he can dominate the division, IMO. He has shown that he can neutralize a submission master. He has shown that he can steamroll a (much smaller) master gameplanner. And, of course, he powered thru a solid seasoned vet in his first UFC win.

However, we have not seen him have to deal with someone close to his size, who has solid wrestling (not as good as his but still very solid) and most importantly, someone with KO POWER.

Neither Herring, Randy, or Mir hit hard enough to KO (or even really stagger) a guy like Brock. Herring is probably the best striker of the bunch and he is no knockout artist to say the least.

Finally Brock will be in there with a guy he can’t rag doll and a guy that can hit him hard enough to back him up and maybe even finish him. I’m inclined to think that Brock has a good chin, maybe even a great chin. He doesn’t like getting hit, but I don’t see him being prone to a flash knockout.

If Brock wins this fight in dominant fashion than he is going to rule the UFC HW’s until if/when/maybe he has to face Fedor. I’m sure Brock will look to take this one to the ground early. Can Carwin bounce back up like Couture? If he can, it’s gonna be a hell of a fight.

by revjames13 on Aug 20, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great opinion Rev James. I couldn’t have said it better!

I have to stress one fact though. Carwin has not been in a title match and has not faced a large crowd like the one he’s up against in Vegas. This is where Brock will mentally have the fight. If Carwin can get his head-game together. i have him winning by Flash knock down with some superior heavy Ground and Pound.

War Carwin!

I think were finally gonna get to see how brock handles someone relatively his size. Carwin is still a bit smaller but bigger than herring randy and mir. Plus we all know Carwin has one punch ko power at anytime. And he has a huge wrestling pedigree. So it should be alot harder for brock to even get him down. I see this fight being more standup and brocks chin being tested.

Cant really pick a winner but i have brock as the favorite. As much as it pains me to say that.

Lesnar via F-5. If Carwin counters that, I say Lesnar by Shooting Star Press off the turnbuckle, complete with concussion via over-rotation. Then Marc Mero will come in and steal Sable back.

But seriously, I hope Carwin sends him packing. Lesnar has been a problem wherever he goes. He broke a non-competition clause with the WWE, he started fights in the NFL, he acts like a jackass in UFC with his pro-wrestling stunts, and I hate his stupid face.

I can’t even make a call on who I think will win because neither have a ton of experience, even combined. All I can say is I’m wanting Carwin to walk away with that belt.
