UFC 105: Michael Bisping needs a new opponent with Wanderlei Silva out
Michael Bisping demanded to face a "top fighter" after his devastating knockout loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 100 on July 11.
And it appeared that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva was willing to oblige, setting up a potential showdown with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14.
However, according to a recent blog post from "The Count," the explosive bout has been diffused because the "Axe Murderer" has gone under the knife and won’t be ready in time.
Here’s a snip:
"Quick update on the potential Wanderlei Silva fight. Unfortunately thats not gonna happen. He's undergone facial surgery, so obviously won't be fighting in the near future. Rumours are he's actually out for the rest of the year. So as of right now, Im still unaware of who I'll be facing at UFC 105. Obviously as stated before, when I know, you know."
Calls to Silva’s management team about the alleged "facial surgery" procedure were not immediately returned.
In the meantime, the hunt continues to find Bisping a new high-quality opponent -- one who will get him back in the 185-pound title picture sooner rather than later.
UFC 105 will be the first show held at the MEN Arena since UFC 70: "Nations Collide," which featured one of the sport’s biggest upsets when Gabriel Gonzaga defeated Mirko Filipovic via crushing head kick.
Can the promotion find a suitable opponent for Bisping -- someone like Silva -- who ensures United Kingdom fans are treated to even more fireworks or is no one available who fits the bill?

Give him the loser of Marquardt vs Maia at the end of the year.
That will answer a lot of questions… my questions anyway.

yeah bisping is just a B level fighter. with his skill set that’s probably all he’ll ever be. i see bisping as a gate keeper. the ability to finish fights puts guys on the next level. bisping’s lack of ability to finish fights will keep him being a good B level fighter. wandy would’ve done the same thing as hendo did to him. i say give him alan belcher!! u know belcher is out for some justice after his last fight. and if bisping can’t beat alan belcher, then the count’s place in the MW future will be known

I don’t even count Bisping as a gatekeeper, he’s on his way out. He really has nothing to offer…he’s such an undercard fighter at best it’s not even funny!

I don’t like him a great deal myself, but he’s not going anywhere for the next couple of years. He’s not nearly as bad as you think he is. I can tell that you are very biased.

ToeLock, I agree with you. But they do need a British gatekeeper & he is probably one of the type brits ;o) I liked Bisping before. Now, he is slowly fading away… I think they should have him fight DeMarques..just for fun. Who cares about weight. Give them both a water bottle.

I think a good fight would be put him in there against Akayama but I doubt they’d do that cause Akayama isn’t a big name to the casual fan yet but I think it would be a great fight. Palhares would be a decent opponent as well…he put up a tough fight against Hendo. Bisping has fought strikers almost exclusively since his drop to MW (I don’t count Chainsaw) so I’d like to see him mix it up against someone that can take the fight to ground and put him in trouble.
Either way…I think Bisping needs a second taste of reality that he isn’t as good as he thinks he might be.

In all seriousness guys, what the fuck is with all the Bisping hate?
He’s clearly not a top 5 MW but you guys all make it sound like he doesn’t deserve to be in the UFC, which clearly isn’t the case.

“In all seriousness guys, what the fuck is with all the Bisping hate?”
The fact that he’s a loudmouthed, arrogant pr!ck, with nothing to back it up but powder puff punches, protected from up high coz he won the weakest season of TUF, who’s spoonfed cans and has no wins over any top 20 opponents in any weight class.
Could be contributing factors??

Personally I’d rather have no British fighter in the UFC than have Bisping the cocky twat making a bad name for us!! I’m all about good fights and fighters regardless of their origin.. I wonder if that’s why Paul Semtex has been signed, I’m wondering if Dana knows Bisping’s days are numbered and he is hoping ot build a new name for the UK…I personally hope Semtex does well, he is a real fighter and like thunder!

Your analysis of Bizzzzbing is spot on deuce. Give him Belcher though???? I know the card aint on PPV but remember the UFC have gotta sell tickets to the arena, and it wouldn’t be close to a sell out if that was the main event.

Finally some peeps that agree with me on this turd from across the pond. He hasn’t beaten anyone of any merit. He realized to be competative he had to drop down a weight class. And, he just got KTFO by a true top level contender in a fight where he did absolutley nothing but take a coma at the end. He belongs in K1… period…
I say give him to Matt Hamil again, let Matt avenge his ‘loss’ and smash up Bisbing’s face once and for all…

B-Level at best… Maybe C+. I think most of the mid tier guys would give him a run. How about a Chael Sonen match-up? Or if you just want to see him get worked over, Miller or Kang.

Bisping-Belcher would be a dire main event, Belcher is nowhere near main event caliber as a fighter or a draw and Bisping is coming off a brutal loss to his only top 10 opponent at MW. The only way that fight happens is if the UFC put it on the undercard and have a big name in the main event. Maybe BJ-Diego if Penn changes his mind about not fighting in the UK again. Andy-Hendo II would be the perfect as I could cheer for my favourite fighter against one of my least favourites and Silva has history in England whilst Hendo will get booed out of the building after TUF 9 and 100.
By the way K-dog shocking the way Bisping talked to you and your missus, I’m losing respect for him on a daily basis. Funny comeback though mate serves him right for acting like that towards people that he thought were fans of his (he couldn’t be more wrong lol).
So far 105 has me worried, from a possible Andy-Bisping main event to a free Spike TV special with only Wilks-Brown (admittedly a good fight but I hope it’s only on the undercard) and DaMarques-Sobatta (seriously who cares about that arrogant overrated loser facing a no-name) announced and Wandi off the card as well as no news on tickets it could end up being an awful card. Saying that I’m still going, can’t miss out on the UFC in Manchester but I hope that they give us a good card.

I like the Chael Sonned idea to, a strong wrestler, with good standup, and a solid chin who is totaly game. Also I was thinking give him to Cote when he is ready to fight. The idea of Cote knocking him out excites me to. Goveia would be another good fight for him to see where he is at, with a great ground game and solid stand up, he would be the best test to see where he really is at.
I don’t think he can be considered a main event again until he beats a top 10er, even if it is in UK. The idea of a gate keeper, or a little less then, as the main event or even a co-main event-with all the talent in the UFC right now pains me. Even as a Fight Night headliner, the talent pool is to deep and exciting. Matt Hammil exposed him at 205 and Dan Henderson decimated him at 185. If you look at the Sherdog top 10 MW Bisping could not compete with a single name on that list. They have him listed as a contender, but look at the other names as far as contenders go: Cote, Miller, Filho, and Trigg would all school him imo.

It was shocking Dave, as you said on a previous post, it’s not like he’s famous. I even saw him the following day after the weigh ins and gave him another volley, but he was too far away for it to be effective. Watching him strut round Mandalay Bay in his sunglasses with his yes men and hangers on, was one of the funniest things I’ve ever, ever seen. The guy is from Clitheroe in Lancashire for gods sake, to see him try to swagger around like he was an a-list movie star from Beverley Hills, was utterly hilarious.

How can you even consider this guy a contender. All other in the MW title picture have fought MANY other contenders…Who has Bisping fought???? No ONW, then got KTFO , KO of the year against Hednerson.
He needs to beat someone liek a Grove or Cote, jsut to even be considered for fights against Maia, MArquardt, Henderson, Belfort, gouveia????.
That whiny bitch was PROMISED if he got by hendo(and the only way that was gonna happen was by outpointing him) he would get a title shot? WTF? He NEVER fight sguys liek Gouveia, or a Belfort, ot A Kendall Grove, or even a CHael Sonnen.
PLAIN AND SIMPLE….The UFC is TRYING their best to give him the EASIEST fight with the BIGGEST name….and that is teh 1-4 Silva. I am huge Silva fan, but, he is just too slwo and too war torn

I like those two opponents as well. I think Kang will take him down and pound on him most of that fight, so Sexy might be a better opponent because he likes to trade punches. Is Gouveia still a MW? That might be a good fight. Basically, I want to see Bis fight someone with good reliable KO power to see if he has learned how to avoid it. Right now, Canadians, Brazilians, Hawaiians and Americans have some dudes to be proud of. Brits, not so much. I’m sure Brits will have their day in the sun, but I don’t think Bisping will be the one to bring you the belt.

Yeah we don’t have any world-class fighters to get behind, same in boxing but we’re still expected to cheer for people because they come from this country despite them not being great fighters and in several cases not even nice people.
Our brightest prospects in MMA are Hardy, who has looked good at WW and picked up some good wins in the UFC over Davis, Markham and Gono though I don’t see him ever being top 5, and Wilks who has the potential to be a great fighter so I’ll be interested to see how he does against Matt Brown. He has excellent BJJ and solid striking and doesn’t rely on dodgy British camps so I have high hopes for him. Bisping, Semtex, Kelly, Taylor etc don’t have any chance at being champions in the UFC.

by getrawbc on Aug 19, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Here’s an idea for an exciting fight in England, remove Bizzzzbing completely off the card and replace him someone new. There is no half decent opponent for him to face, just cans, so let him fight in America two months later and give us a couple of global stars or a title fight instead. What’s the alternative UFC 105 Bizzzzbing vs Belcher, I can hardly wait. They wouldn’t sell out half the MEN arena with that as a main event.
by attakdog on Aug 19, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree K-Dog, other than the Nate-Maia loser there are no main event caliber opponents for Bisping to face so either put him on the undercard or off this card completely. British fans would much rather have a title fight or some big names rather than a posterboy shoved down our throats.
by David W-S on Aug 19, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree Dave, it winds me up beyond belief that we have to have Bizzzzbing and these other British cans rammed down our throats. Americans must look at our cards and think for us Brits the UFC begins and ends with Bizzzzbing – WRONG!
I hate all these patriotic knuckle scrapers who say “you’ve gotta get behind the British fighters”. Why??? I wont cheer for someone just because they’re from the same country as me, especially if they’re rubbish like most of the Brits or a complete d!ckhead like Bizzzzbing.
Give us cards with real UFC global stars and matches that mean something – title matches, number one contender matches, grudge matches and not british bums beating up on cans and fake “standup wars” featuring Marcus Davis. Trust me we dont need 10 British fighters per card to sell out an arena, you’d do it in half the time with just one big name fighter.
by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 4:27 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Totally agree mate, sod patriotism I cheer for the fighters that I like regardless of where they are from. You won’t see me blindly following anyone because they’re British.

His “victory” over Matt Hamill is the most disputed win I have ever seen…and I’ve been watching MMA far before UFC 1. Matt Hamill may not have been extremely aggressive, but he sure beat Bisping. How does Cecil Peoples (…judge, for all you jobbers who really don’t have a clue about MMA) score the decision 30-27 in favor of Hamill…and the other two score it 29-28 in favor of Bisping. One word: Shady.
As for the comment, I’d love to see a rematch. With Hamill’s injury and Bisping’s drop in weight, I don’t know if it’ll ever happen…but I can always hope.

Kang won his last fight man. I would say he needs to establish himself better. A GnP KO over Bisping would help to do that. Actually, he might stand right in front of Bis and KO him. I don’t think he could knock Kang out.

Bisping-Kang is not good enough for a main event, it’s as daft as Bisping-Leben and at least that fight had some meaning to it (Bisping is the Team UK coach if he wins), Kang is a good fighter but not a draw and Bisping would need a better opponent namewise for anyone to want to watch a card with him headlining.

I don’t think he could beat Robbie Lawler or Cung Le to take that SF title away either. HE lacks the power and the chin! He would be a a good gatekeeper there though!

Doesn’t matter. It just went from an A- level main event, to a B- @ best. You can’t take away wanderlei and replace him w/ kang etc and still have the same effect/potential fireworks, that we were guaranteed w/ wandy.
I prefer Dana to do what he can to make this a respectable fight, plus add another above avg fight.

If Denis Kang is available, he might be the best option on short notice. If Grove had won his contest against Almeida, that could have been a marketable contest. Only other option I can think of might be Akiyama, which might not be the most marketing-friendly middleweight match, but should be a good fight.

Give him Kendal Grove… winners of the same TUF, Bisping gets his win and Grove gets cut from UFC. IDEAL!!!
Would have to be the co main event though
by Paul on Aug 19, 2009 11:28 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think it’s a really marketable match-up, TUF champs from the same season going head-to-head. It would mean more if Kendall had any kind of momentum going into that match-up though. He’s 5-3 in the UFC right now, but his arguably only impressive win was against Belcher, and he suffered two first round knock-outs consecutively from Rivera and Cote and couldn’t get the job done against Almeida, while Bisping was only a fight away from a title shot. But they’re both coming off losses, so it shouldn’t look like too much a mismatch.
by Jase on Aug 19, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not remotely marketable in the UK, remember they’ve gotta sell out a 16,000 seat arena, think they need to aim a bit higher than Kendal Grove.
by attakdog on Aug 19, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not saying they shouldn’t, my personal preference would be Kang, but who else can they get? Wanderlei pulled out, Belfort slated to go up against Franklin at catchweight, and Marquardt and Maia are already slated to fight. Grove may not be the best or most well-known fighter available, but people recognize him thanks to The Ultimate Fighter.
by Jase on Aug 19, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How about shelving him completely, we dont need Bizzzzbing on every card! There’s no halfway decent drawing opponent for him so make him fight later on an American card and let them boo him to high heaven.
by attakdog on Aug 20, 2009 4:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I, too think they should give him Georges St. Pierre, no one at 170 can even compete at this point with GSP, put him at 185 and fight one of the top Middleweights, don’t forget Bisping is a tough dude, he was solid at 205 as well, so if they put this fight together, I bet it will be the best overseas PPV ever!!!!!
by sam on Aug 19, 2009 11:31 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’d agree with that, but only cos I’d like to see GSP fight. He could fight anyone and I’d still go to the event. It’s relatively local so I’m gonna go regardless of who’s fighting. :) It’s the tickets I buy will depend on the card. :P

by Tricky on Aug 19, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This could end up even worse than the last card, at least then Bisping was a pretend contender. Cant beleive there are no fights even set for this. I was all ready to buy my tickets but i really dont want to pay to see Bisping vs a nobody who will probably end up beating him anyway. Would like to see Hardy get a bit more of a test again but it isnt like he could main event this. Still my hopes are on BJ v Diego but dont see BJ going for that.

Yup, totally agree this is gonna easily be the worst UK card thus far. Tickets will be on sale in the next fortnight i reckon and as usual we’ll be expected to fork out £50+ for a card with no fights on it. Forget it, unless something drastic happens, this will be the first UK card I’ve missed.

by eagzy on Aug 19, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If they do that they’ll both lose! Etim’s already fought two top 20 guys and got beat comfortably. Hardy would get destroyed by anyone in the top 10, his lack of a gg would get totally exposed. A Hughes or a Koshcheck would lay n pray him to death!
by attakdog on Aug 19, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea I tend to agree with that , but rather that than have them get a run going against weak opponents, I still think hardy has a lot of potential tho long as it isn’t Hughes kos or fitch I think he is ready for a step up. Sucks that they won’t give us hendo vs Anderson, imagine hendo going for the title in Manchester after doing that to bisping??? Th crowd would be wild!!!

Yeah you’re right, watching them constantly beating up on cans proves nothing. The trouble for Hardy is, all the top 170lb guys are great grapplers. One of the only few he could stand and bang with is Alves, but he’d get f@cking destroyed. It does suck how we wont get the Silva/Hendo fight considering they’d have gven us the title fight if Bizzzzbing was in it.

Mixed feelings, I’d love to see Maia fight live and submit Bisping but chances are that would mean that he lost the Nate fight and I don’t want him to lose. I’d be happy with a Bisping-Maia main event though, especially if it was a warm-up fight to keep Demian busy while Andy defends the belt against Hendo.

Drop this fight to co main event, cause its not a main event with the count fighting any1 that’s open for a fight, and the GSP suggestions were retarded. Never happen. What a waste. Especially getting GSP to fight in uk for a free spike card.
Need a new main event. But as for who? I’m stuck. Dana will have to pull out some stops here. Bk Penn/Diego? Move tito/Coleman to 105 instead of 106?

Two losses in aorw for him will be horrible. Bisping has no place being anywhere near main event I feel, esp without an already announced definate decent opponent in a fight that actually meant something.
Wand was the only thing that carried Bisping into the main event imo, and likewise Bisping v Leben was not a main event worthy fight – Dana White said in the UFC 89 event program and I qoute “a main event that is a can’t miss no matter what way you break it down. Both Bisping and Leben are hard-headed, stubborn guys who will meet in the centre of the Octagon and start swinging until someone’s hand is raised. There will be no ‘feeling out’ process, no dancing around looking to counterstrike…” Well thats not the fight I saw that night.. and i’m not excited at the prospect of a rumoured Ufc 105 Bisping main event.
Being a fan of mma in the UK I’m sick and tired of being force fed below par fight cards, we dont think the ufc starts and ends with Bisping, and now the rest of the same UK/European fighters that seem to be on every card
imo the UK fight cards have gone down hill since the injury problems of 85, the cards started out great with top names in fights that meant something, and now the last time around they overcharged us tickets to an empty arena (95 at O2 arena in capital of England, London) dropping names like Anderson Silva, and then having the ‘main event’ involve 2 guys whose next fights were both on a Fight Night card
I have been to al the UK events (except the early one at the Albert Hall) and even 93 in Dublin, and unless they bring up the quality of this card compared to recent UK cards I will not be giving the UFC my money this time. They will need to keep replacing their fan base instead of adding to it if they keep this practice up, as I’m hearing many UK fans saying the same thing.
I know we have no official fights listed yet, but in this game the rumours usually turn out to be true, the internet stops info from remaining private these days, and things dont bode well for this card with it already stated as a free Spike card and a PPV the next week, and also no complelling fights are rumoured, only TUF fighters, and scrambling for an opponent for Bisping.
I would even go as far to say scrap this card and come back when there is something worth putting on, we have been charged the top event ticket price for the big show, and recent uk fight cards we havent been given the big show!

Great post, the UFC need to get their act together, after the 100 debacle and lazy matchmaking for UK cards that are effectively Fight Nights rather than legitimate PPVs they are not endearing themselves to their fanbase over here. Right now they’re taking their audience for granted and that is not going to help them build a viable brand over here.
I want to go to 105 because it’s not far from where I live and will be my first time at an event but I don’t blame people for being unconvinced with this card. Without Andy or Wandi, Bisping should not be in the main event of any card.
by David W-S on Aug 19, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve been argueing for ages dave that the UK shows should be totally seperate and called UFCEurope 1, 2, 3etc. As they bare no resemblance whatsoever to the numbered American shows. At least people would know then that they’re paying for inferior shows and aren’t gonna see any big matches. Lets face it the UK cards are worse than Fight Night shows but we’re still charged premium ticket prices and they’re taking their loyal fanbase for granted, but not me anymore i’m afraid!!!

Thanks…
attakdog great idea with starting definite UFC Europe cards, at least we would be able to make an informed decision on what we were actually buying tickets for, the ticket price should be brought down accordingly as well, becuase at the moment we get below par events masquerading as UFC numbered events… or even if they were marketed as Fight Nights that would be more appropriate
David W-S I too live in easy driving distance so I want to go to 105, and I may sound spoilt but having been to all the UK events 105 has nothing to attract me to give ufc my money this time… saying this I’d still recommend that you definately go to 105 if you havent been to an event before as you live near as the live experience is great, but this is what I mean when I feel the ufc will need to keep replacing its fan base instead of adding to it each time unless they up their game.
My frustrations are not with the fighters at all personally, even though I sound so bitter, this frustration is with the ufc marketing and event planning procedures, not the fighters, I do respect what they do and sacrifice to be a mma fighter, and how hard it must be, so my rants are not aimed at them…

Yeah we get the most annoying and overrated TUF 9 contestant against a nobody wow that’s going to sell out a 16,000 arena. This card might as well be a FN, it’s on a week before a major PPV and is being shown for free on Spike, with no advertised main event and only an undercard and a prelim fight announced.
Jack, I’ve put off going for a while so I’m not missing out, the UFC’s not in the North that often so I’ve got to make the most of it regardless of the card. Should be exciting live, better than watching it on ESPN. I might get lucky and the UFC will put one of my favourites on the card. I’ll never forgive Bisping (or Hendo) for costing me the chance to see Andy get a dominant win live.

There are no reasonable main event match-ups for him, that’s obvious. Wandy was one, because there was the huge possibility that he was gonna KO him faster than Hendo. And if Bisping somehow got the W, it would be by far his biggest win to date.
As far as his career goes, the best actual match-up would be:
Sonnen— former champ in another organization. Not a huge deal, but at least something.
Sexyama- well regarded fighter coming off “win” in first UFC fight.
Nate Quarry- fought for the title once. Got KO’d much like Bisping. Competitive fight.
If we want to talk fantasy— get Matt Hughes to move up in weight for a one time fight. He was talking about doing it if he beat GSP. Well, he actually might be able to beat Bisping.
If Nick Diaz wasn’t tied up in Strikeforce, I would love to see him chase down Bisping.
Hey, they just signed Baroni, right? I know he’s a WW now but he could easily fight the Ping at 185.
