Randy Couture: Gina Carano vs Cyborg Santos 'was an amazing five minutes'

Props: MMAWeekly

Quoteworthy:

"I think she had some opportunities to win. It was an amazing five minutes. They made a lot of transitions, a lot of positions, and I think Gina caught Cyborg with some shots that got her attention, and obviously Gina got overwhelmed on a couple of occasions, but I think overall, she did some great things. This is a new experience for her, and it’s an important one, and I expect she’s going to come out the other side a stronger and better athlete for what she’s going through right now."

UFC Hall of Famer Randy "The Natural" Couture sounds off on the performance of Gina Carano following her loss to Cristiane Santos at the August 15 Strikeforce event from San Jose. "Conviction" enlisted the services of the former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion for her championship bout against "Cyborg" but despite a valiant effort and an exciting five minutes of action, was rescued from the Brazilian's onslaught with just one second remaining in the opening round. She may not have gotten the title, but did she finally get the respect she was looking for as a fighter -- and not just a pretty face?

It was a good fight. While I am disappointed that it did not continue to the second round, it was a valid stoppage.

If the fight went to later rounds, I think Gina may have had the edge. I would like to see a rematch down the road if Gina can put together a few wins.

I think she gave up the mount too quickly. She was afraid of Cyborgs Jits I’m sure, but to give up such a dominant position I felt was a huge mistake. She should have stayed there and GNP forcing Cyborg to get out of it or at least wear her down significantly. She just stood up and let her get to her feet. Bad Bad move!!!!

wake up, cyborg had already got out of the mount when gina stood up.

by shamo84 on Aug 17, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, she had already gotten back to half-guard with the hip escape when Gina stood up. No-doubt, Cyborg wins this fight 9 out of 10 times.

Randy knows his stuff. She will be back. The question is what is she going to do to make it more competitive?

by lokie on Aug 17, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

with cyborg ofcourse

by lokie on Aug 17, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Not give up full mount lol. I was like wtf are you doing Gina?

She’ll definitely come back better after the loss because she’s seen the next level now.

by RobH86 on Aug 17, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL Yeah thats true, but that not the only problem she had. Other than LANDING in mount she really didnt do anything else.

by lokie on Aug 17, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly, all these people keep saying that she shouldn’t have given up mount when really Cyborg shouldn’t have given her mount in the first place. Cyborg was hurting Gina on the feet with Gina only throwing a few hits here and there. It was obvious Gina was hoping to wear her down but doing nothing to really protect herself from being brutally attacked. The only real mistakes Cyborg made were her Judo tosses. She was too predictable for Gina with those and like lokie said GAVE Gina mount. If they do a rematch, you all expect Gina to learn from her mistakes but Gina made a ton of them, I expect Cyborg to learn from hers and not fear the power of Gina. Thus Gina will never beat Cyborg.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 17, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

She tossed her husband real well in that promo they did weeks ago. Um…rephrasing that…uh actually there’s really no way to clean that up so whatever. Cyborg’s power made Gina very tentative. Gina will have to take the brawl out of Cyborg for the rematch if she wants to survive.

by DSmith on Aug 17, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, as much as I like Gina she loses 9-10 with that beast of a woman

Yes it was a huge mistake. I still don’t understand why she stood up. She was getting clowned on the feet and she fluked her way to full mount.

by RobH86 on Aug 17, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

bad technique on both their parts, I couldn’t believe Cyborg put herself in the same position twice; and the only thing that really shocked me was Gina letting her out of it twice.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 17, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Come on guys, cyborg turned to her side and rolled into half guard by locking her legs around gina’s right. That’s why gina bailed coz she was gonna get swept again once cyborg got that whizzer. Great escape from what i saw. One of the few technical moves displayed.

cyborg thought she could ragdoll gina just like the 135ers she’s fought all her life so her lateral drops were horrible as f#ck.

I think she was scared of the ground game a tad bit, but not only that she was pushing gina off very easily it was a matter a time before she got up either way.

by phenomenal angel on Aug 17, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Being afraid of someone jits is one thing but that 2nd mount was so high. It was a huge missed opportunity.

by DSmith on Aug 17, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Did not follow the gameplan; it had nothing to do with her training, or Couture; it was all nerves/mental on Gina’s part. Actually on both their parts, I think the pressure got to both of them. I don’t know why Gina didn’t maintain mount at least one of the times it hit the ground; she just stood up and I didn’t understand that. Especially considering she was getting killed in the stand up exchanges. Cyborg going for that hip throw twice when she had underhooks, and then ending up mounted twice was pretty bad too. As far as an entertaining 5 minutes, that it was. But as far as technique goes, it went out the window in this one.

Good experience for both; I think Gina needed to slow/calm down in this one. Cyborg did what she needed to do, but she also got too hasty and put herself in a couple bad positions. Also IMO it says something about womens mma and cutting weight. You look at the mens divisions, the majority of these guys are solid muscle at whatever weight they’re fighting at. They’re cutting 10-15 lbs to weigh in. Usually if someone looks a little soft they can probably make the next weight class down. Cyborg is a solid 140 lbs no doubt, I think Gina and just about any other chick that ends up fighting Cyborg at 140 will be giving up the size unless they wanna get ripped, and I doubt most women want that look regardless of the results they’d see inside the cage.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 17, 2009 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, no technique in this one. I don’t think Gina gave up the mount, she was in such a frenzy that she wasn’t thinking about controlling position, so Cyborg bucked her off. If Gina had a gameplan, it either sucked or wasn’t evident. There were holes in Cyborg’s game that could’ve been exposed – she had terrible takedowns, all power, no technique.

Gina looked like she established a nice jab and movement for a bit, but was overpowered. She shoulda laid off those weak kicks, which Cyborg caught easily. Stick to the push kick and 1, 2’s, while circling.

Btw, was that a kneebar she went for? LOL.

It was a really exciting fight. its posted on Micheal Bisping’s web site www.bisping.tv (not sure if it will be available to view in the US but fans from the UK and europe can watch it)

On a side note, bad news for any Wanderlie Silva fans in Bispings blog on his site he says that the potential fight between him and wandy isnt going to happen as Wandy has just went in for surgery on his face (I know hes ugly but…lol) he says that the romours are he’s out for the rest of the year.

Hope Wandy gets back in the octogon soon.

So the pics was really him?? Damn poor Wand.

by Alpha Male on Aug 17, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn, so much for seeing Wandi fight live. I am getting more worried about the 105 card daily, Bisping will end up fighting another mid-level fighter in the main event at this rate.

by johnny boots on Aug 17, 2009 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

ufc really needs to do a womens TUF..it would be the highest rated program in the history of spike tv..dana doesnt care about womens mma, but he sure as fuck cares about ratings..and money…and womens tuf is both

yup it it blew goats.

by RoJ on Aug 17, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

its all about production and branding and credibility…the ufc and spike could put on a credible show of female fighters in an exact format of TUF and it would be successful….all u have to do is look at the target group of spike viewers…

you trying to tell me that none of you in this thread would watch that yet you have hard dicks thinking bout watching kimbo on the upcoming season? get the f*ck outta here…

kimbo > house full of girl fights = a thread full of homos

good lord! look at those cannons on cyborg!

by remedy on Aug 17, 2009 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

Gina gave up the mount. This is not an opinion—-just watch the fight again. She did not fight intelligently but even if she had, she might not have won anyway. Santos is by all appearances, not entirely female. I wouldn’t be surprised if her testosterone level weren’t approximately that of an average adult male. Her ripped and inordinately large muscles indicate steroid use (as of yet undetectable)though I hope that’s not the case. And if Gina really is dating Nick Diaz, then her judgment really is really on tilt.
