I can see Shogun submitting Machida on the ground by getting him there with one of his tricky jits trips.

Once there, Machida would have to literally prove how good his BJJ is.

The more likely scenario I see is Machida blasting Shogun as he comes in and tossing aside his TD attempts.

As one of the OG Machida nuthuggers (on this site anyway), I have always predicted that the Shogun of old could be the one to take Machida’s crown.

However, if “UFC Shogun” shows up, its lights out for him!

Machida FTW!

by OJR on Aug 17, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Machida will make Shogun look like Forrest Griffin fighting Anderson.

Shogun will not be able to touch Machida and The Dragon will light him up as soon as he feels like it.

When the fight was first announced, I said that Machida should be a -500 favorite in this fight and got blasted for it. He opened at -600. Shogun little pansy trips will NOT work against Machida. Shogun does NOT have world clas takedowns (regardless of what some will tell ya) and even if the fight does happen to go to the ground, Machida is no white belt in BJJ. But the only time I see this fight hitting the ground is when Shogun’s unconscious head slams against the mat.

Everybody things Shogun is back to his old PRIDE form. WHY???? Because he KO’d the over the hill Chuck Liddell? In the last few fights, who HASN’T KO’d Chucky? (Wandy, I know…) Oh, maybe its that really impressive win he had over the other over the hill fighter in the LHW division – Mark Coleman. Both of these fighters are WAAAAAAY past their prime. Machida is just BEGINNING to reach his prime. Shogun and his many nuthuggin fans are going to QUICKLY realize that the very loose Japanese rules played a big part in making the Shogun I loved in PRIDE.

In MMA its all about what have you done lately. Lately, Machida has been arguably the #1 lb for lb fighter and Shogun, well, he has just looked like another PRIDE fighter that can’t cut it against the top level UFC fighters.

Well put!

by tylerS on Aug 17, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

ViolentMike – Machinda has been the #1 lb for lb?

I haven’t seen him #1 on any list. And he isn’t in front of GSP or Silva anywhere, I don’t think he is #2 on any list.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Great post VM, I know that there are a lot of Pride fans but they shouldn’t let that cloud their judgement, Shogun is not the fighter that he was in those days and the different rules are a big reason for that.

Machida is the future of the LHW division and I don’t see Shogun beating him, a gassed Coleman repeatedly took him down so he won’t get Lyoto onto the ground and Machida is a better striker, plus his BJJ is underrated. Right now I don’t see him losing at 205, just as Andy, GSP and BJ won’t lose at 185, 170 and 155 respectively. These 4 right now look unbeatable (until Fedor and Brock fight I won’t consider either one as the dominant HW at this stage of their careers).

by David W-S on Aug 17, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

he did say ‘arguably’

It means it isn’t the truth, but one could make the argument for why Machida is the best p4p.

by Brandon on Aug 17, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

This fight is going to end one of two ways… Machida by stoppage or UD. It all depend how much Shogun wants to press his luck.

by Cole on Aug 17, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks Brandon. That’s exactly why I said arguably.

I could make an argument for Anderson, Machida, Fedor or BJ. Someone else can make the argument for GSP.

If I HAD to make my list, it would be:

1 Anderson
2 Machida (BUT, Anderson says Machida wins thier sparring sessions and Andy can’t touch him)
3 Fedor
4 BJ / GSP tied

Rapidly approaching Top 5 status (in my book) – Gegard Mousasi, Nick Diaz, Mike Thomas Brown.

There may be some I forgot. We just got an island like passer by tropical storm and I had to go close my windows and was a nice guy and closed a female co workers as well. I am drenched and miserable.

by ViolentMike on Aug 17, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

VM-

Nice list.

1)A. Silva
2)GSP
3)BJ
4)Machida
5)Fedor

BTW – Not to sound like a selfish caveman but I rarely do nice things like that for women(my mom being the sole exception to that rule).

Its rarely appreciated and often taken for granted.

Not worth the effort or the time, and I don’t care how hot she looks…

Kudos to you for being a good guy.

by OJR on Aug 17, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

1 Andy
2 GSP
3 Fedor
4 Lyoto
5 BJ

However if Lyoto gets a dominant win over Shogun like I’m expecting then he’ll move up in my p4p list to 3 and he certainly has the potential to be the best p4p fighter, especially if GSP has a long lay-off before jumping to MW and Fedor doesn’t fight any top 10 HWs.

MTB and Bowles are just outside my list, Bowles needs to defend his belt first to be under serious consideration though leapfrogs Torres after that brutal KO and a win over Aldo would cement MTB as top 5 replacing BJ.

by David W-S on Aug 17, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

pound 4 pound lists are totaly gay and a waste of time. if you want to talk pound for pound an ant would own all these guys. just stupid, and mousasi isnt even a top 5 mw or lhw, barely even top ten.

Machida better tighten up his ground game, cause Shogun is a MONSTER on the ground!

I see Shogun having some advantages over Machida:

1st) I firmly believe that shogun has the best Ground game in the LHW division, and he can pose probllems to anyone on the ground!

2) I think shogun is better in the cinch than MachidA

3)This will be Shogun’s fourth fight in the Octagon, and I think he is starting to find his comfort level, around the same time that he is finally healthy, and his cardio is up!

I dont give a Fock about offering up a prediction for this fight, and I dont really care who wins. These are 2 of my favorites and as a fan, I am lucky to have either wearing the UFC CROWN!

This fight will be Epic!

by Alpha Male on Aug 17, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Shogun has the tools to win this fight…no question there. I just hope he’s ready for 5 rounds and comes in with a solid game plan. I think the key for Shogun is getting on top of Machida…it’s impossible to be elusive off your back and you can’t counter off your back so that takes away Machida’s main strengths. I know Machida has a solid ground game but I don’t think he will surprise Rua with anything he can throw at him off his back. How does Rua get Lyoto on his back? That’s his problem to solve…but like john said…he needs to get his clinch game going and do what others can’t seem to do and that’s close the distance.

by Buster Bluth on Aug 17, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry guys, but shogun gets destroyed here! What has shogun done recently to make you think that he will give Machida problems? He barely beat COLEMAN and ko’d a well past prime Chuck! You cannot predict a fighters future performances based on success from their pride days! I see this fight ending late second-early third round tko by machida. Lyoto is just too good! Shogun falls to the back of the line after this one. Be ready for a forrest-shogun rematch!!!

I feel good about both… I could really see this going either way… but this and the cyborg victory bring up an interesting prop… what about for next tuf they do North America Vs South America? thatd be cool.. some canadians and americans and mexicans vs some brazilians and some… ok just brazilians cuz you aint gonna find anyone else.. colombians are too busy stabbing each other and blowing up cars..

I have been a fan of Machida’s since 90% of this site used to bash him for being boring, and iMO, he is simply GREAT, but I dont think he is invincible. I think Shogun and Rampage both are capable of pulling off an upset, but in my eyes, Machida would be the favorite against both.

If Shogun is healthy and comes into this fight close to his Pride cardio level, then this could turn out to be one of the best fights in the history of the UFC. I think the word of this match up

Til this day, I still watch lil Nog vs. Shogun about once a month! What a fight that was!

Lol spooner true about Colombians, though I’ll always have a soft spot for them because of Tino Asprilla, great footballer and such a wacky guy off the pitch.

Seriously North America v Brazil is a great idea, it would make a great PPV and would top UFC 58 in my opinion. Got to cheer for the Brazilians if it ever happens.

It does however surprise me after the dozens of threads on this fight in the last month or so, to see that Shogun seems to hav 75% of the posters on his side vs DRagon. Its weird to me but I’m not backing down. FRAGON DRAGON will kill

by Daniel worby on Aug 17, 2009 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

Dude?

what?

Most people are for Machida here. That isn’t true at all, 3 to 1 for Shogun??

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Machida is the man, he is bringing traditional martial arts into the sport of MMA and has looked a class above everyone who he has faced so far. He has the best footwork in MMA and is near impossible to hit, whilst he times his strikes perfectly. Lyoto’s also deceptively strong and a very good wrestler, he threw Tito and Thiago around like they were nothing.

I’ve yet to be convinced by Shogun, he’s talented but injuries have caused him to struggle for form. His cardio against Forrest and Coleman was very poor and the Chuck fight didn’t last long enough to test this weakness. A 5 round fight against a guy in the form of Machida is going to be a tough ask for anyone, nevermind someone with questionable cardio and a disappointing recent record who only got the title shot by default when Rampage signed up for TUF 10. Shogun has a lot to prove and I don’t see him being the one to beat Machida.

by David W-S on Aug 17, 2009 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed 100%.

by OJR on Aug 17, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

If the fight goes 3 plus rounds, I can’t imagine Shogun presenting any problems in round 4 or 5.

Unless he can get a huge strike in, he is in trouble.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Still even though he has a lot to prove, he is the best option for a title shot right now. Who else is there? Rampage didn’t want it.

He wanted the TUF contract for $$ and popularity.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I know he’s the best option, just pointing out that he didn’t exactly earn it through his performances. Like I said he only got it because Rampage chose TUF 10 over a title shot.

by David W-S on Aug 17, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep i’ve been posting that his wins over Coleman/Chuck don’t prove anything, but I get pounced on for it each time, so I decided to take a different approach in my posts today.

Every1 seems to somehow think that ko’ing a guy whose lost all but 1 fight in his last year and some and is now retired, along with marginally beating another 40+ year old makes him “unstoppable”.

I’m not so easily convinced and he didn’t need/get the chance to prove his cardio in the Chuck fight (good for him tho that he did it that fast, nothing wrong w/that) just don’t have the need to take his side over dragons, especially after what i’ve seen and continue to see from DRagon.

by Daniel worby on Aug 17, 2009 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

There is absolutely no chance in this planet that Shogun will win this fight. Only person’s Shogun beat is a run down Liddell. Machida wins by knock out, round 2.

Shogun isn’t going to dive for a single leg from across the cage, so his takedowns aren’t going to look the same as Tito’s. So you never know.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yay dragon supporters! I too do not have one doubt in my mind that he will absolutely run thru Shogun and prove to every1 that this isn’t Shogun from pride.

This is a different breed of lhw champs, just like GSP, Anderson, Brock, and Penn…there far ahead of the rest of there divisions.

Possible competition?
Lw: Diego, brown(wec)
Ww: no 1 (rumble is a MAYBE in few years time)
Mw: no 1…ever…
Lhw: no 1 right now.
Hw: carwin is a MAYBE

Remember those are just possible threats. I’m not stupid enough to guarantee any of them. And I’m pumped for cerrone to move over to ufc after his next fight.

by Daniel worby on Aug 17, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

agreed. The champs right now are far away from the pack.

I don’t see to many people challenging BJ. Brown is MUCH MUCH smaller than a guy like GSP, and even though GSP dominated he still needed all his tools to do so. I can’t imagine Brown who is worse than GSP in all areas (especially when you account for the size difference) could threaten BJ.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

If you look at all the champions, they are pretty much “lifers”, they’ve been in the game more than a decade and are constantly improving.

Then there are the newer bread guys that have 1-5 years experience, unless they are phenomenal athletes (Brock), it is hard to challenge for the belt.

GSP has both the phenomenal athleticism and is a “lifer”.

These champs can hold the belt as long as they are hungry.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 17, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep agreed. Shogun IMO will prove very little tests. And brown being a 145er would need a lot to compete w/bj. But I forgot milendez who I’m not saying would but is another interesting fighter whose coming to ufc after he avenges his Loss to Thomson.

And I do feel that other then Brock who very well is on the same path as our other current champs, the champs right now can remain that until they retire as long as they retire @ respectable points in their careers

by Daniel worby on Aug 17, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

LOOk you dorks, Machida is one of the best pound for pound fighters. point! he is undefeated and made the last champ look like a chump. Rashad evans -from champ to chump.

You guys that are counting Shogun out are nuts and have completely forgotten that anything can happen in MMA. Look at Torres vs Bowles. How many people on here lost big there? I Think this is a 50/50 chance for either. When was the last time Shogun was completely KO’D? True he has major cardio problems which hopefully he will have fully addressed by the fight. Shogun is very strong in the clinch and will have big advantages there. He covers up beautifully especially while retreating from an attack. When was the last time one of Machidas opponents have tried hanging back and setting up attacks with leg kicks? no one. Does Shogun have nice kicks? yes…..i say 50/50 chance for either fighter!

by danny_c on Aug 17, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

So what if he is using 50 lb weights? Maybe he’s near the end of the exercise, or doing sets of 25+, focusing on muscular endurance, etc.

I have Machida winning, round 3 KO. Machida has not looked vulnerable in his last few fights. Shogun has looked terrible.
