Gilbert Melendez: Mitsuhiro Ishida verbal greasing allegations are 'weak'

Props: Sherdog.com
Quoteworthy:
"I did not grease in the fight. The athletic commission was with me the whole time. I didn’t bring any grease with me. I didn’t think there was much grappling in the fight anyway.... It’s kind of funny, but kind of weak. I beat him good and there’s no way I greased."
Strikeforce Interim Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez responds to claims from Mitsuhiro Ishida's camp that he applied a greasing agent prior to their rematch at Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" this past weekend. "El Nino" went on to score a convincing third round technical knockout via strikes in a one-sided bout, which was quite a contrast to their first encounter that "Endless Fighter" took via unanimous decision back in 2007, using a gameplan that relied on relentless takedowns. Ishida had a very difficult time getting Melendez to the mat this time around despite several efforts. Perhaps it's the reason for the verbal grease claim. Keep in mind that a formal written complaint has yet to be filed with the California State Athletic Commission. Ishida and his handlers, if they're serious about the allegations, have five days to do so. And even if they do, will likely have a difficult time proving that Melendez was illegally slick. Sour grapes or slippery snake?

I sense DREAM is behind this instead of his camp. Very uncharacteristic for T-Blood guys, they all usually admit defeat and shut the hell up after taking beatings.
For the people who noticed, Shimada was sent to Strikeforce because Dream actually wanted him to ref the Ishida-Melendez fight, but CSAC suspected weird things so they put a stomp on that(CSAC has been coming thru with non-$hitty moves in droves for the past month, almost commendable if they didn’t suck so bad for so many years.)

Sourgraping is indeed a good way to get back at your opponent. Hehehe!

This stuff is so dumb. They need to set some rules in place that a fighter needs to shower or rinse off before the fight.
Any fighter can put on sunblock or something and then when he sweats it comes out of his pores.
Shouldn’t they be smart enough to put some rules in place so that people can stop making excuses.

wow brendan are you serious? melendez looked awesome in that fight
by JG on Aug 18, 2009 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
JJ ur one of the rare few that gets it! That is pretty damn close to what is going on with slick fighters. However even showering before the fight doesn’t do the trick, using a special soap or something that drys out the skin while showering might work… Imagine referee’s watching MMA fighters shower before fighting? lol… not going to happen!

Ishida had no really good attempts at shots on MElendez. The one takedown he got was on account of Melendez not sprwaling quick enough. Other then that Melendez was flawless on sprawling. Ishida had no chance for a takedown. Gilbert was the better and more complete fighter. He out boxed, out wrestled, and out defensed Ishida in every way, shape, and form. This is just sour grapes for getting owned for 3 rounds. Ishida is lame for even verbally making these claims. Give him another rematch after The Punk, so the one dimensional wrestler can catch another beating in the cage.

brendan — Dude, you must have watched a different fight. That fight was just about the most exciting fight of the four televised fights. The Mousasi fight was awesome, too.

brendan: I like you, but you need to Fock off wit that statement…..to, me that was one of the most impressive performances of the year! If you know anything about Iishida, then you have to be impressed by el nino. He looked amazing, nullifying Iishida’s entire attack. His takedown defense was liddell-esque, and he was throwing fast, crisp, and powerfu hands the entire time. He was masterful at finding his range early on.
For me, that was one of the best performances of the year. Those are the types of performances I envisioned out of Gilbert, when I raved about him after Pride. Looks like Gilbert is coming into his own!
I would love to see Gilbert vs. Alvarez!

Melendez looked superb that fight, he came in with an excellent gameplan and outclassed Ishida. I can’t stand excuses from defeated fighters so Ishida and Dream can bugger off as far as I’m concerned, Gilbert fought the perfect fight and beat his one dimensional opponent, who should be looking at how to improve his all round game instead of doing a BJ. Making excuses doesn’t help you improve, it just keeps you from working on your weaknesses and allowing your delusions to stop you from fulfilling your potential, plus it’s shocking sportsmanship and very disrespectful to the winner.
Hopefully Gilbert will finally get his shot at Aoki in Japan and the title unification fight with Thomson will happen at the next SF event.

Yeah okay because Ishida was actually able to manage to any type of hooks in when he shot in….makes perfect sense that you had some very sloopy uncommited takedown shoots and gilbert was performing some beautiful sprawls. GREASE was so involved sarcastic

U guys don’t get it… ‘none of U’… not saying Melendez did it BUT… fighters in addition to shaving all the body hair they apply lots of moisterizure the night before. It’s absorbed even after u shower in the morning… should make u slick for the next day. Old trick so far not illegal and undetectable… Matt Hughes is the only guy that’s mentioned it, I’ve been saying it for long time.

First thing I thought was here’s another BJ. I like Penn but I hate excuses and greasing is one of the worst of the lot.

So sour, they turned bitter…
by The Negation[formerly just an MMA junkie] on Aug 18, 2009 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They check you for greasiness right before you enter the cage. It would be impossible to do without everyone seeing. BJ Penn at least had some case. Even if its true, accusing it without proof just makes you look bad

Maybe BJ’s mom could help him file a complaint.

That is some weak ass shit from Mitsuhiro Ishida to say. He is just pist because he thought he was going to beat Melendez easily. The only time Gilbert greases is when he is not fighting and just adding some Soul Glo to his jheri curls

Bk Penn, Ishida.
Ishide, bk Penn.
How do ya do?

I don’t really care for all the greasing allegations, but I did mention to my wife when Melendez was getting prepped before the fight that it was strange how he wanted water poured on his head before the fight, which his corner did. It would make sense that if he had grease on his face, then poured water on his head, the grease would make it’s way down to the rest of his body….just sayin’.
by introvert on Aug 18, 2009 9:45 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not the way it’s done Intro… not say Melendez did it, but by way of direct experience it’s lotion… see above comment.
by THORAZINE on Aug 18, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know this Einstein….how does the lotion go undetected, but then gets slick when fighting?….moisture from sweat….OR WATER!!!!!!
by introvert on Aug 18, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dry skin absorbs lotion, skin just feels soft or smooth, nothing unusual, releases when sweating…makes the body slick. Now I have to go work on my Quantum Analysis Thermodynamics Theory.
by THORAZINE on Aug 18, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So…you agree with me?
What is your basis of the “Not the way it’s done Intro” statement if you agree with me?
Nothing like arguing for the sake of hearing your own voice (or, reading your own text).
by introvert on Aug 18, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I missed yr point.. got it now, sorry Intro didn’t mean to give u a headache.lol..interesting idea might work… just enough to make his upper shoulders and arms slick for a bit? or enough edge for the whole fight?… nothing like having it coming out all the pours in the body though.

Meah. Who’s to say these guys all aren’t doing something of the same nature, but don’t care to say anything til they lose. If its not in the rule books, i’d probs lotion up the night before as well, let it sweat out the next day, hell i’d probs let my b.o. Build up just for an advantage. Whatever :D

haha. no way gilbert was greasing. ishida’s camp is mad his fighter got his a$$ whooped.
by brainowns on Aug 18, 2009 11:50 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ishida was completely owned in this fight, little disappointed that he would say that. I thought Gilbert won there first fight as well. Its amazing how close the first fight was and how not close the second was.
