Chuck Liddell joins season nine cast of 'Dancing with the Stars' on ABC

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has joined 15 other "celebrities" for a spot on the upcoming season of the hit ABC television show "Dancing with the Stars."
"The Iceman" will compete against other notable non-dancers such as "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," the Chairman from "Iron Chef America," and some guy who was banging Brenda Walsh.
Liddell hasn't competed since a technical knockout loss to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97: "Redemption" from the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, back in April. It marked the fourth loss in his last five fights.
Company president Dana White has pressed his good friend and big time money-making machine to hang up the gloves, saying he has made a ton of cash and has nothing left to prove. Liddell — who will be 40 years old by the time April 2010 rolls around — is still on the fence about a possible return.
But the icy one is certainly keeping busy while he decides.
The full cast includes:
• Kathy Ireland (model)
• Macy Gray (singer)
• Melissa Joan Hart (actress)
• Mya (singer)
• Ashley Hamilton (ex-husband of Shannen Doherty)
• Michael Irvin (retired football player)
• Mark Dacascos (actor, host "Iron Chef America")
• Donny Osmond (entertainer)
• Kelly Osbourne (daughter of Ozzy Osbourne)
• Debi Mazar (actress)
• Chuck Liddell (ultimate fighting champ)
• Natalie Coughlin (Olympic swimmer)
• Joanna Krupa (swimsuit model)
• Louis Vito (snowboarder)
• Aaron Carter (singer)
• Tom DeLay (retired politician)
The show pairs a number of celebrities with professional dancers as they compete in front of a panel of judges. Viewers cast their votes for their favorite performances via phone or Internet. The couple with the lowest combined score (judges plus viewers) is eliminated until only one couple remains.
I'm sure that when Dana White pushed for Liddell's retirement so that he could become an ambassador for the sport, this isn't exactly what he had in mind. But if Mr. Mohawk makes it into the later rounds -- and manages to look good while doing it -- it could generate some additional mainstream interest.
"Dancing with the Stars" premieres on Sept. 23 on ABC.

I always hate it when people refer to MMA as “ultimate fighting”
by zulu9812 on Aug 17, 2009 9:58 AM EDT reply actions
Count yourself lucky, in Britain it’s “Cage Fighting” or in one newspaper last week it was “Cage Boxing”. That’s how far the sport is behind over here!
by attakdog on Aug 17, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions
It is sad. But if they printed MMA, nobody would know what that was, so they print cr@p like “cage boxing” and wonder why so many people still think the sport’s illegal over here. Still it’s better than the classic “human cockfighting”.
by attakdog on Aug 17, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ve been saying for years, they need to just call it
“Cage Street Fighting Bloody Murder Death Kill Brawling Violence Sport”
and then people would know it was a Sport, cause at the end there they’d see the word Sport on it.

Then again MMA isn’t a real sport so that would be misleading

K-dog thats pathetic, which paper called MMA “cage boxing”? I know most of the tabloids have been calling that idiot Alex Reid a “cagefighter” but that is ridiculous. Even the promotions advertise the sport as “cagefighting” or “ultimate fighting” (I’m amazed that the UFC haven’t sued Dave O’Donnell for breaching copyright) and if they can’t get it right then the sport is not going to make much progress no matter how hard the UFC work to promote it in this country.
MMA desperately needs more sport journalists to become fans because the fact that so many people in this country don’t know what the sport is called sums up how far away it is from being accepted by the mainstream.

IM HEAring that Grim vs. Fedor will go down in NOvember!
Call me a Fedor nuthugger, but I am really starting to warm up to a fight between Fedor and Grim. I think Grim is a lot tougher then he gets credit for.
Opponents I hope to see Grim face in the future:
Tim Sylvia
Kingo
Carwin
Cro Cop
Brock
arlovski 2
I am really starting to warm up to Grim!

Dave, it was either the News of the World or the Sun, and it was about Jordan’s latest bloke. I was literally laughing when I read the term “cage boxer” then I started shaking my head coz I found it really very sad and shows how far we’ve got to go in this country for MMA to be mainstream.

What about Big Foot John? I’m sure he will fight Fedor also when “comrade popov” will be done with his Strikeforce contract. I’m thinking they all gonna end up in Dream…Barnett included.

grim is on the same level as Carwin. Both undefeated fighters with the same number of fights who both only fought 1 real tough opponent…NO one would complain if Carwin fought Fedor because Carwin is in the UFC,,,but those same people woud bash a Fedor vs. Grim match up!
I am actually really starting to like this match up and I hope this fight gets booked for Fedor’s 1st fight in a cage!
by john G on Aug 17, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions
No wonder you’re “starting to like this matchup” as Fedor totally dominates every aspect of it, and has very little challenge here or chance of tarnishing his legacy. Rodgers is basically to Fedor what Forrest was to Anderson Silva, just a sacrificial lamb. Beating up on a few cans and a freak KO of a fading star in AA doesn’t make you anywhere near ready to take on Fedor and this will just be yet another embarassing one sided beatdown.
by attakdog on Aug 17, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh yeah, Carwin has a ground game and a very brutal gnp. Grimm has neither!

John, nobody else here gives a shit about seeing Fedor fight unless he’s fighting the best available competition, and that’s only in the UFC.
by PW on Aug 17, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions
John, while the others are putting it down I am interested in that match-up. I have talked to Grim on multiple occasions and he’s pretty cool so even with a loss to Fedor it would help his name.
Attak, I am pretty sure Grim’s GnP is every bit as brutal as Carwin’s. You just don’t see it because he isn’t wrestling and taking guys down. If he hits like a truck on his feet, no reason to think he couldn’t do it from top position.
by pjj on Aug 17, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree pjj. Grim is a really nice guy, and how can you guys say he has no ground game? Have you seen it? He hasn’t lost a fight, and has the power to knock anyone out! I’ve actually heard that he has a decent ground game!
by kevin on Aug 17, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions
John, to be fair I want to see Fedor-Grim, it’s actually the fight that I was hoping Affliction would put on so I’m happy for SF to have it instead. After that KO of AA Grim proved that he should be fighting top contenders, no need to baby him anymore. I have him up their as a top prospect like Carwin, Cain and Dos Santos, too early to dismiss any as of yet.
If AF are smart then they’ll have Fedor-Grim and Overreem-Werdum (if Alistair bothers to show up this time) fight on the same night and have the winners face for the HW title, that way SF can finally bring some legitimacy to the belt.
K-dog, not surprising that it was another lousy Reid-Jordan story (I can’t stand the skank or the arrogant loudmouth no-name Reidinator so all of this coverage is driving me mad) though I thought that the Sun had some MMA coverage, you’d think that they’d check with the boxing/MMA journalists. Then again it is the Sun, can’t put anything past them.
by David W-S on Aug 17, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly Dave, they’ve got plenty of online coverage about MMA, nothing in the actual paper though, but you’d think they’d check with someone who was in the know. I cant stand that dirty scrubber either, she makes me feel sick and her fella (never heard of him before, was he in cage rage?) sounds a right pr!ck.
You’re right when you say “if they can’t get it right then the sport is not going to make much progress no matter how hard the UFC work to promote it in this country.”
As long as it is constantly referred to as “cage fighting” by the popular media, it is always going to evoke the negative image of illegal bare knuckle fights between two tattooed skinheads in some farmers barn in the middle of nowhere, with the winner being the last man still breathing. Until the correct and less evocative term “MMA” becomes widely used, the only time it will be in the media is for negative “Human Cockfighting” stories and not for being the great sport which we all know and love, and that just winds me up beyond belief!

Chuck started fighting because he had to make ends meet. Now that he’s rich, he can finally do what he has a real passion for, and the thing that he’s really good at. DANCING, thats right, Chuck Liddell can cut a rug and this desire has been in his heart now for years. All those years as the LHW Champ were just a means to an end. We are about to see the beginning of a new era in alternative dance, and in river dance; Chuck is in a league of his own on this one and I don’t think even those guys from that movie “You Got Served” can hold a candle to the IceMan.

by ViolentMike on Aug 17, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I am thinking maybe it is not the ’ufc’s target
audience, but it could help on the attitude that many people still have about MMA guys being neanderthals. Despite his rugged exterior, he willbe a great ambassador for the sport unless he KO’s Joanne Kruppa while doing a 2 step, but MCay Gray and Aaron Carter would be perfectly acceptable ko’s in my opinion!

Any chance of Chuck coming back is gone, as soon as he announced a 1 year sabbatical I said that he wasn’t coming back and doing reality shows is a way for him to look for a new career.
I get what RoB is saying, Dancing With The Stars has a huge audience so if Chuck comes across well then he has the chance to bring in a brand new set of fans to MMA, I don’t care who watches the sport the more the merrier I say.

As for DWTS, I think they get paid 65k per episode and it goes up once they get into the later rounds. Not a bad pay day. It definitely not the target audience but it’s good publicity, not Lesnarish publicity. I’ll take it.

and I still won’t watch it. Hope Chuck doesn’t have a flash back in mid step and give his partner a spinning back fist. She better be a tough chick.
by Gurthee on Aug 17, 2009 10:38 AM EDT reply actions
Oh some of you guys are such babies. Just gotta act like tough guys even when we can’t see each other! Ha ha, lame!
Why is it that this is a brutal idea for him? But all the former hw boxers from the hall of fame and former NFL hall of famers get praised for being great sports, but not even mma fans will step in and vouch for there sports leaders/pioneers?
Grow up you guys, I guess the posters that are stil in high school on this site can’t look past trying to prove there “big men” yet.

“Grow up you guys, I guess the posters that are stil in high school on this site can’t look past trying to prove there "big men" yet.”
Or maybe they don’t like to watch a bunch of washed-up actors/athletes/D-list celebrities sell themselves out for a few dollars while trying to scrape up whatever is left of their dead careers.
You realize that you got all pissy in your post over a reality dancing show? Please tell us again who needs to grow up?
by introvert on Aug 17, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Ok ill tell you again, introvert ya loser, you need to grow up!
There blatant enough? You always seem to weigh in just to pick a fight. So what if his career in fighting is done? Doesn’t mean he has to sit @ home the rest of his life.
Who are you to judge if he wants to have a lil fun and make a lil coin doing something else?
Good for him for not being to scared of what losers like you would think if he wants to have fun and make a few ppl "Chuck"le on the way.
You stick to showin us how much of a man you are by bashing him. I’m not saying you have to watch, but he doesn’t deserve any flack for doing this. Lots of respected sports figures have done this in the past.
I still like Barkley, and Irvin. Ill continue to like Chuck.
by Daniel worby on Aug 17, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Also, I kno you may think they’re all losers but many would disagree.
Old loser athletes?
Like:
Shawn Johnson
Emmit Smith
Jerry Rice
Lawrence Taylor
Michael Irvin
Or bums?
Like:
Mark Cuban
Or washed up?
Like:
Floyd Mayweather
Hmm all sound like a bunch of no good no bodies to me introvert. All these losers should stay @ home or only talk about their past accomplishments in their sports. They shouldn’t be able to take opportunities presented to them that others can’t. How dare they!?
Watch some interviews off the field w/guys like Irvin, Sapp etc, see what type of great ppl they are both in there sport and community, then tell them they have no right to have some fun.

You really like this show, huh? Nice cast though, all great players.
by Alpha Male on Aug 17, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Lol never watched the show, will this year. My dad will make fun of me, cause him and the wife watch it. Now I will be. I just googled previous season casts. But thanks for @ least respecting and acknowledging there talent ha ha

Jesse, I’m kinda upset you don’t know who Mark Dascasco is… One bad ass Martial Artist
Was also in Brotherhood of the Wolf (best thing to come out of France .. ever)
Dude’s one mean SOB

I actually met Mark while he was filming Kickboxer 5 in South Africa. I was there while I was in the service and I was like “Hey it’s the guy from Only the Strong!” He was hilarious in person.

He was also Catscratch in Wing Commander 4, an oldskool computer game.
If I met him I’d bug him about that.
