Cris 'Cyborg' Santos: Stopping the fight was good for Gina's health

"I'm very happy! I was ready to face the five rounds, I was ready to face the crowd, I was ready to face Gina -- I was ready for everything. I prefer Muay Thai but if I need to go to the ground then I'll go to the ground. Whoever Scott Coker puts in [the cage] to face me, I'll face, but if Gina wants a rematch, she can have a rematch -- no problem at all. I think [the stoppage] was right. The judge's showed a little sign that said 4:59 seconds and I think the stoppage was good for Gina's health."
First ever Strikeforce women's champion Cristiane Santos sounds off via MMA Fanhouse on her first round TKO win over female mixed martial arts superstar Gina Carano. The lady warriors electrified the San Jose crowd on August 15 but in the end, 'Cyborg' just proved to be too much for 'Conviction,' forcing a referee stoppage with just one second left in the opening round. Did Carano deserve the chance to see a round two since it was a championship fight? Or was the stoppage in her best interest? Let's hear where you stand on this one Maniacs...

She definetely had no answer for anything that Cyborg threw her way, but she did what she said she wanted to do, and left it all in the cage. Cyborg could take anyone on this site the same way she did Gina! And don’t try to argue it.

The last 10 seconds of the fight was impressive. It looked like Vitor Belfort was bent over Gina dropping bombs. Gina was covering up for dear life while Cyborg spoon feed her punch after punch. Gina got schooled!!!
by Jason on Aug 16, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, Gina was done in that fight. If she was game to keep fighting she would have been up in her feet in not time trying to make a case for herself to the referee. Instead she just lied there trying to recover and get her senses back.
She got rocked by some Santos bombs.
Her best chance of winning would come from Cyborg failing the drug test.

i thought Gina did well, until the last minute if the 1st round. I do however dont think she came into this fight mentally strong enough. I think she lacked confidence. Al i all it was a commendable performance considering she was fighting against a BEAST who came into the fight with previous 5 round experience.
Its sad to log onto this site and see a bunch of people bash Gina. Gina has been a class act, and a warrior throughout her entire career, putting womans mma on the map. I dont think there are any woman in this world that can deal with Cyborg’s bOMBS…dropping on their face.
Gina is a great fighter that has done everything RIGHT! 1 fight doesnt change that! Stop being Keyboard warriors and show some respect for what was a pretty entertaining fight!

This is what all the other girls who fought her had to face. Gina was way bigger and had these grapplers outgunned on the feet. Throwing around 135er’s and 125ers isn’t the same as someone your own size with definitive strenght advantage. Also people talked about how she was in shape but if you think about it every other time she missed weight she was at 143-144 so nothing was different really.
Anyways, good stoppage by Rosenthal even though he sucks the majority of the time.

That is such an awesome picture! Shows Gina Carano was totally manhandled by Cyborg. Carano has never been hit like that before and didn’t know how to react. Carano needs to spar with some 125lb male fighters that won’t take it easy on her, if she’s serious…like any other fighter she should learn from this defeat! If she has endures that kind of foe in practice… she’ll come back that much better! Carano needs to get lumped up in practice every now n’ then at intervals to monitor improvement.

No need for a rematch , The result would be the same.
Gina can fight ( YES ) But Cyborg is to much to handle for Gina…
by Il Nino on Aug 16, 2009 7:37 AM EDT reply actions
Agreed, the result would be exactly the same. Gina has basically been carried with easy opponents just because of her looks. She is gorgeous and a very skilled girl, but she’s not a true ferocious fighter anywhere near Cris Cyborg’s level. Her promoters have done a great job with her and she’s probably made s shed load of cash and who can blame her?… But the bottom line is eventually in this sport you’re going to have to fight a proper A-grade fighter at their peak at some point. It’s when this happens that people like Gina get their asses handed to them on a plate.
On a MUCH lower scale, we could say similar things about Fedor at the moment. Would any other HW champion get away and even get praised for fighting middleweights and LHWs? And being 100% honest, were all the big names he fought in pride at the top of their game and at their peak?….Nope.
by MrAngry on Aug 16, 2009 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Yep she probably made a grip of cash for getting her face beat in
she ran out of the cage after her lose because if they would have interviewed her she would break down in tears. That’s the differance with women being in the cage

She’s just like Kimbo.. All hype
they set up ez fights for these two.. just to built up their street cred.. Lol

I’m pretty sure a rematch is going to take place. by dtoto on Aug 16, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
The Fetal Position is not an intelligent form of defense, as far as what I can remember. She was fetal for close to 15 seconds. Gina gave up her top position the one time rather than taking advantage of it, but on the same note Cyborg actually let her stand when she had her back, which I found really odd. Gina needed to use her fron push kick, to keep the distance. She actually backed up Cyborg when she was keeping a rhythm. It was obvious Cyborg did not like getting hit with Gina’s power. Well I guess sticking to a game plan is real hard when you are fighting that much power.
The idea of a rematch is the only obvious thing. Who else is she going to fight? There is no other women worth fighting. Maybe Cyborg can go to the WEC and challenge Mike Brown for the 145# unification…

Good stoppage, if anything it was a little late, Gina clearly was done by the end of the round and wouldn’t have made the second so no complaints about that.
This was a one-sided beatdown, just as expected. Cyborg is too powerful and well rounded for Gina, full credit to her for battling through but Cyborg was too much. Gina had Cyborg in mount a couple of times, though other than that she didn’t really have anything to offer and even the dominant position was helped by Cyborg making mistakes in the clinch. Not the most technical fight or the most competetive but it was still an entertaining fight.
by David W-S on Aug 16, 2009 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

Here is the problem:
So they find another fighter who can beat Cyborg….WTF is she going to look like? Bigger and badder that Cyborg? MEH.
Fact: Womens MMA is an exhibition
Gina is an usually hot women fighter that has great talent relative to the other fighters. The MMA base (men) tuned in cause she was hot (for the most part).
So what happens from here? Watch Cyborg beat up someone every few months? Not enough people are going to care to make money off this thing. UFC was smart not to buy into this.
Fact: I’d like to watch Gina fight….Just to see her at the weigh ins. :) Sexist pig…I know.
by DubNub on Aug 16, 2009 10:18 AM EDT reply actions
Womens MMA might start off as an exhibition but it has a chance to be a lot bigger then that. You can’t go from zero to women only PPVs, there just isn’t the talent. But with rising popularity comes more chances for female fighters to make a living off it, so you get more female fighters and more challengers and the talent level just goes up.
I think too many people want to see hot girls fight and not get beaten unless its by another hot girl. They don’t want to see a “butch” girl fight another “butch” girl because they think it’ll make them less of a man! Female MMA has a long way to go before it’ll get past enough of those mental biases.
Personally I think we saw more action and more heart in that one round then we saw in a lot of the UFC 100 fights.
by Gentleman on Aug 17, 2009 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions
FACT: women’s mma as it was seen the other night was an exhibition; a sideshow. to see the future of women’s mma, look to women’s hockey, or women’s golf, or the WNBA, or any other sport where there is a women’s league and a men’s league. bottom line is that men are generally physiologically better athletes than women and will always produce a higher quality sport to watch.
FACT: any man at any weight class practicing mma on a semi-pro to pro level will beat cyborg 10 times out of 10. i would bet my house on it.
the sad part about our “gender neutral” culture is that merely typing the above likely paints me as a chauvanist rather than a realist.

Dana White is an idiot for not signing Gina when he had the chance. Guess what Dana, because of Gina, “Strikefarce” (as you call it) is a legitimate ratings competitor to the UFC. Now Coker can expand on this and actually make Strikeforce matter. I’m pulling for you Dana, but you need to get your bald head out your ass and not let your ego get too big cause some of your business decisions are down right stupid. Gina would of taken the UFC to a different level and your stupid ass didn’t sign her.
by MMA ANALYST on Aug 16, 2009 1:02 PM EDT reply actions
Disagree.
UFC don’t need women MMA. Would’ve hindered the UFC’s rep as a serious sports organization. Big boxing cards are not headlined by women bouts. Big MMA cards shouldn’t either.
Strikeforce had the pretty girl factor and the curiosity factor (women in MMA?), but that can’t last forever. It’s like Manon Rheaume in goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning. She’s cute and she can play at a certain level, but it’s a short term thing.
Now that pretty girl went down, women bouts won’t be the main event at Strikeforce for a while. They can’t headline with Cyborg vs some unknown challenger.
So… Diaz vs Jay “0-2 in the UFC” Hieron for the TITLE!!!

I think the fight was good for the sport. Still can’t say I am pumped for women’s MMA though. I think it will turn out well for the next year or so lining up opponents for Cyborg and potentially building a rematch back up. If Gina fights some other top tier rising female stars it could help build her confidence.
Cyborg definitely was too much for Gina last night and I agree with the posters that say the fight was stopped too late if anything. I was there and Gina was simply outmatched and getting pummeled at the end of the fight. TKO plain and simple.

Seriously, the hitting power difference was absurd. I think Cyborg was toying with Gina, and I’m not a Cyborg fan, I just don’t care for women MMA.
Every punch and kick received by Gina appeared to cripple her. I don’t know why Cyborg spent all that time going for submissions, she could’ve ended it much earlier by throwing bombs.

by JB on Aug 17, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions
The fight was more competitive than I thought it was going to be. Gina actual had a couple moments were she had Cyborg in potentially bad spots, but couldn’t capitalize.
I’m sure they didn’t want to see Gina get too beat up, hence the early stoppage IMO. Only about 1 in 3 of those shots at the end were even getting through, the rest were hitting her arms. With only 1! second left the ref could have let that go and see what would happen in the second round.
I don’t know why Big John wasn’t reffing this important historical match if he was there working anyway. Or Herb Dean as a second choice. They probably pick lots to determine who refs what, but they just should have assigned him to the main event.
Gina would most likely have lost in the second round, but I actually think she was very competitive for most of the first. It was not the complete destruction most people are making it out to be.
by revjames13 on Aug 16, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions
Gina stepping out of a full mount to let Cyborg up was one of the worst moves of all time. I know Randy didn’t teach her that.

Ok, Am I insane? Maybe I am just in denial, I don’t know. But what I believe is that Cyborg fought a dirty fight. She kicks Gina from behind into her crouch region, and then clearly, RIGHT ON CAMERA, rigs her nails into Gina’s eye, and no one seems to mention this or acknolwedge it. What is with people? If Cyborg is tough then she should have fought with some dignity and class. MAN! Even the fans saw this rig to the eyes and reacted.
Look, I don’t want to be a cry baby. The ref was worried about Gina and stopped it. OK, I accept it. But please don’t pretend that Gina was DEMOLOSIHED or any of these other stupid adjectives you seem to feel necessary in describing her defeat. And PLEASE don’t expect me or other Gina fans to bow down to a champion who clearly used dirty tactics. Don’t get me wrong. Personally, Cyborg seems like a pleasant lady who very much appreciates fans and the sport. I hope she does well.
I love GINA, always will. She is a true class act and a wonderful young lady. Reading some of these comments is putting me over the edge. You people can be such idiots sometimes. I know they are athletes, but they are human beings. Have some respect for what Gina accomplsihed for the sport, and will continue to accomplish when she bounces back.

No ifs, ands, or buts about it Gina got completely schooled in this fight. It was almost like she was told “just go out there and protect your face and it will all be over soon”. Complete lack of heart on Gina’s part, verging on discraceful in my opinion. Gina was simply a marketing scheme based on her looks and NOTHING else and this just proved that point beyond a doubt to anyone with half a brain.

I agree that Gina was not demolished. She showed good balance at times in the clinch when they were both working for the takedown or to maintain control. She ended up in the mount at one point raining down blows. When Cyborg rolled for half guard Gina made a huge mistake and lost a key opportunity.
At the highest level, you pay for mistakes like that. Against a stronger fighter like Cyborg, Gina needed the perfect fight to pull off a W. But she was competitive. She back Cyborg up with some nice stiff jabs and landed one of her patented front kicks. I, for one, believe the fight should have gone to the second round, as Cyborg got control with only 10 second left in the round and the majority of her strikes were hitting Gina’s arms. True she got some good ones thru and shook her up, but she didn’t put her away.
Gina should work on her ground game with BJ Penn. Then she might learn how a dominant position like she had can mean the end of the fight for her competitor.
To quote Bonnar, when BJ Penn gets that position it is a “death sentence.” Mount to back to mount to back to RNC.

Sad to hear comments about women who are making it in a man’s world. Oddly enough, it is weird to see women fight in a cage where men dominate the beastly atmosphere. I can’t understand all the hype about men pounding on each other who obviously are steroid freaks. But seeing Gina and Chris fight was undoubtly a hype for entertainment and the big money. Gina was trying to save her face. Cyborg deserve a lot more credit from all the hard work she has put into her fighting abilities. Cyborg you ROCK! Don’t listen to negative comments because most negative comments come from fear.

Both women trained hard to get in superb shape. The difference was Cristiane Cyborg Santos’ pinpoint accurate cycling on and then off of her steroid program to pass Strikeforce’s non random PED drug screening test.
Cyborg’s man-like strength was too much for Gina. Any knowledgeable bettor picked Cris Cyborg to win (as I did) even though one had to lay almost 2 to get 1. Good grief, if I’m allowed to make money betting on a fight between two similarly skilled women but one is allowed to cheat with steroids while the other does not cheat…well, it’s like printing money.
Recently, in an interview with M-1 Global, MMA newcomer Cindy Dandois (who defeated Marloes Coenen is her 1st MMA fight) said this about Cristiane Cyborg Santos: “…there’s not much woman left in her.”
I can’t wait for that fight.
