Nick Diaz signs with Don Chargin to compete as a professional boxer

Hall-of-fame boxing promoter Don Chargin has confirmed that embattled Strikeforce welterweight Nick Diaz has signed with "War-a-Week" to enter the world of boxing under his direction, according to Boxingscene.com.
The deal will not affect his contractual obligations with Strikeforce.
The surprising news comes just days after Diaz was scratched from the upcoming Strikeforce "Carano vs. Cyborg" event on August 15 after failing to appear for his initial pre-fight drug test on August 7 and again for the make-up exam on August 10.
Saturday's bout was to be against Jay Hieron for the newly-created Strikeforce welterweight championship. UFC exile Jesse "JT Money" Taylor has agreed to step in and take his place.
Diaz has long been known for his unorthodox but effective striking style. Prior to dismantling the clearly-overmatched Scott Smith at June’s "Lawler vs. Shields" event, the foul-mouthed fightmonger busted up the legendary Frank Shamrock en route to a second round TKO at the last San Jose-based event back in April.
The Stockton, Calif., native is riding a five-fight win streak and has finished each of his opponents in dominating fashion.
However, it should be noted that he was picked apart on his feet by boxer-tuned-MMA fighter-turned boxer KJ Noons en route to a TKO loss (cuts) back at Elite XC: "Renegade" in November 2007.
Still, Chargin believes the Cesar Gracie-disciple has what it takes to cut it inside the ring.
Here's a snip:
"I know the signing of a mixed martial arts fighter might be considered controversial by many boxing fans across the world. When the subject of mixed martial arts versus boxing arises, it always comes down to the boxer winning a boxing match easily and vice versa for MMA. However, after having seen the replays of Diaz's fights over the course of his career, I truly believe that this kid has what it takes to really make for some very entertaining fights within boxing."
The one upside to Diaz becoming a pugilist is that he may eventually have that long awaited rematch with Noons. Not only would it be an entertaining scrap, it would be a pretty good indicator of where his skills are at in the "sweet science."
Stay tuned.

Boxing LOL!!!! all these MMA guys think they can be boxers because they got good MMA stand up. It’s a whole different animal altogether.. They drug test too so he’ll still have that problem as well.
by getrawbc on Aug 13, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Has he even commented on why he missed this drug test? No public apology to SF, no explanation? This is pretty lame Diaz..

caesar commented, I put the quote up monday. he basically said he fights every 2 months, a failed test would be a year suspension so he chose to not take the test so there would be no suspension. Basically admitting he couldn’t pass the test. Not only did he screw strikeforce over, he’s fucking up his own career. I have a source who said the UFC was very interested, but now… It’s time to admit you have a problem Nick!!!

I got a quote why he missed the test, it’s in moderation OD

Of course if he manages to do better than 50/50 in pro boxing, by the time he gets back to MMA his stand up should look pretty damn good

Ah thx Kev, well at least he admitted guilt I guess… When drugs get in the way of your job then yea, you got a problem.

KJ straight killed him standing. His boxing is impressive in MMA simply because of his insane work rate by the standards of our sport. It allows him to somewhat block his opponent’s strikes and simply wear dudes out. But a big part of his success can also be attributed to his opponents being ill equipped to counter such a fighter. In boxing though people have more than good enough hands to deal with a mediocre boxer with a high work rate. This contract will only show us how good his chin is!!!

Diaz will get busted up bad in boxing. His hands look good against strikers that aren’t even impressive by MMA standards. He better take on some serious cans.

‘The deal will not affect his contractual obligations with Strikeforce’ but it will impede him coming back to the UFC. MF! But we got Baroni back? I can’t stand it.

What is going on with Diaz? He blows a title fight, and now he wants to be a pro boxer? I realize he has decent hands, but lets be honest, his boxing is definately over rated. A pro boxer isn’t gonna be phased by that little pitty-pat stuff, and he doesn’t have any power.

well see about the fedor curse, i don’t see strike force going out of business anytime soon.
by roy on Aug 13, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah your right three or four shows a year and most likely only one with Fedor they should be able to stretch it out.
by Puck Head on Aug 13, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
puck, unlike affliction strike force has been around for years and only just got fedor. there company is not based on him alone if he never went there it wouldn’t matter and he has a 3 fight deal with them i beleave and i dout he will be there after that. i see them putting on more and more shows they got showtime and cbs they are only growing and getting better.

he is a great mma fighter, i don’t think he is that great of a boxer.and before you jump on me for that he fights the best in mma do you really see him fighting the top guys in boxing and winning?if he is doing it for fun great just don’t expect to see him fighting for a belt there.
by roy on Aug 13, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions
he won’t be fighting the best roy, I agree, but he is good enough and young enough to start at the bottom and work his way up. Like I’ve said before, I know strictly boxers who train and spar with him and have no reason to lie to me (my wife’s cousin) and they say he’s not only good, but has very heavy hands!
by kevin on Aug 13, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, i would say he will win early fights against low level people and never make it to the top.so like i said if he is doing it for fun or to better his mma great but he will never make it to the top of boxing.
by roy on Aug 13, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Idiot…..now he won’t have any fans! Nobody watches boxing anymore dude.
by allamerican on Aug 13, 2009 1:18 PM EDT reply actions
He certainly isn’t going to win any fights by KO.
by allamerican on Aug 13, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions
I’m a fan of Diaz, but like Roy said he is never going to be a force in the boxing world.
He’s just to slow
by jtc2112 on Aug 13, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions
It would be Diaz’s rematch. Noons won the first fight.

You guys got it all wrong…he actually said professioanal hot boxing
by tiger_style on Aug 13, 2009 1:22 PM EDT reply actions
im sure he would win that title hands down. he was probably hot boxing in his tent while he was “training” in the mountains.

Man, this guy sucks. I don’t know why people like him.
He will be another Tim Silvia and make MMA fighter look bad.
by Natas on Aug 13, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions
Well the one thing thats probably on his side is his conditioning; Diaz can definatley throw punch’s non stop for however many 3 min rds the fight goes. I just think he’s going to end up getting tagged, cut up and beat to the punch. The volume of punch’s he throws is impressive; but the boxing technique/hand speed and even the footwork isn’t there imo.
by O damn he got caught on Aug 13, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
What up OD.. been a while. I agree with you. He can punch all day long but he has no real chance against a truly technical fighter. Shammy isnt a boxer by any means… either is Scott Smith. I really hope they arent basing his skills on those two fights because that is gonna hurt him badly.
Kevin:
Your friends/family really say that he has heavy hands? He had to punch Shammy, who had a busted rib, like 300 times before he finally went down. I dont know if they are really telling the truth on that one. Plus he will have much bigger gloves which will cause him to be even slower imo.
We will have to see tho. Crazier things have happened thats for sure

Sup Enzo, good to see you posting on mania again. Log in to messenger every now and again to see if you’re around; but haven’t seen ya. Got really busy there for a while, it’s dying down a little bit, but the bs is gonna pile up again next week.
by O damn he got caught on Aug 13, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah he throws a lot of punches enzo, but how many are power shots? When he does finally throw a power shot, it does damage (shammy, smith, lawler etc).
good to see you back posting!

Yeah, had to jam for a while. Things got pretty wild. Anyways, Ill be back here often again. Ill see you guys on messenger

Anybody watch the HBO show on the Cincinnati Begals last night? If so did you see Ochocinco train in boxing? I thought it was Paul Williams at first, lol
by Fokman on Aug 13, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions
Diaz has demonstrated good reach and accuracy in his last fights, and I’d think he can go for rounds with all the triath training he does.
by KO on Aug 13, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions
I’m getting frustrated with Diaz right now, he’s messing up his career with dumb moves. Now is not the time to do a KJ, he was on the verge of winning his first major title and now has blown that shot as well as any hope at being resigned by the UFC, plus he’s trying to compete in another sport. A focused, marijuana free Nick Diaz would be a beast and would give any WW, including GSP, problems but a part-time boxer, pot head Nick Diaz is just going to waste his potential.
by David W-S on Aug 13, 2009 2:00 PM EDT reply actions
Or he would go completely nuts from lack of THC; some people need that to calm themselves down and relax.

By Diaz not being banned to fight on Saturday something must of happened with Strikeforce for him to decide to get into boxing so fast.

OFF TOPIC: I was watching the second event last night of EliteXE on showtime and heard something funny. The camera zoomed in on Anderson Silva who was in attendance and the announcers say “In attendance tonight is the number 1 pound for pound fighter in the world.” I’ll bet anything that when Strikeforce has their first fight with Fedor they announce him as P4P best. Anyone know the names of the two announcers, I can seem to think of them right now. [Renalto or something? Quadross???]
by CaptainAmerica on Aug 13, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions
lol, fight professor, Stephen Quadros and Mauro Renallo, spelling’s probably a little off, but yea. I got some respect for Quadros but Mauro is a complete douche and one of the if not THEE most annoying commentator to ever grace the sport of MMA. I give the fight prof a break cause of his pride days, I give him a 5/10 sometimes he was decent, sometimes he was horrible. But never as much of a tool as Damon the dog perry and Mauro. Those two are/were horrendously annoying.

Diaz needs to stop smoking the “medical” marijuana and smarten up.

by Nick Diaz 209 on Aug 13, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions
just because you knocked out a few guys before doesn’t translate to success as a boxer. diaz has no power in his hands just those annoying pepper jabs. that won’t cut it in boxing. you’ll need some ko power to get far. he can’t just stand and trade and stalk like he does in mma. he’ll need to work on his angles and timing to say the least.
by remedy on Aug 13, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions
IDK, I got first hand knowledge that he has KO power… go ask Robbie Lawler. If he throws 50 punches in 2 min, then a power punch, it is like a brick. The “peppering” shots are more annoying and accurate and open up the hard shots that put guys down! Go watch a few of his fights and listen to post fight interviews, guys say he hits hard! My wife’s cousin (yes I’ve said it before) boxes out of stockton and runs about 210-215 (bigger than Nick) and says he has really heavy hands!
