Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

UFC Quick Quote: Forrest Griffin's speedy exit at UFC 101 'wasn't really a big deal'

"He wasn't injured. He's an emotional guy and he just didn't feel like sticking around. He's done that before. After the Jardine fight, they kind of surrounded him a little bit, but he said a couple of things into the mic and left the cage pretty quickly. Just the emotions of…here is a guy who is very confident that he could win this fight and he just never had a chance to get off. He's an emotional creature, so he left the cage. It wasn't really a big deal. I think people are making a bigger deal about it then it really is. It wasn't anything left to see anyway. Anderson had beaten him and it wasn't like it was going to a decision. We already knew what happened, so he decided to go into the back and get his tape off and get changed and everything else. I think he was kind of comforting us more than anything else because we were all down and bothered and you know, that's that."

-- Xtreme Couture boxing coach Ron Frazier tells FightHype.com that the hoopla surrounding Forrest Griffin's mad dash for the locker room following his knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101 was much ado about nothing -- and that most of what people wanted to know in his post-fight comments was already covered in the few minutes he spent getting manhandled by "The Spider." Do fighters have an obligation to their opponents to stay for the official announcement? Or is it okay to split if they're not in the right frame of mind? Sound off, Maniacs.

I think it is good sportsmanship to stick around for your opponents hand to be raised.

me too…very hypocritical of him as well…in his book he claims to have grown up a bit since the Jardine fight…apparently not

I dunno why u all insist on chirping forrest…anderson woulda been doing that to anyone that night….forrest leaving the ring didnt stop me from loving the match, like i really needed to hear rogan- " o so you got blown outta the water forrest , what do you haft to say"

Nothing could ruin my night after seeing that stunning display from Silva but it’s more about showing good sportsmanship to the winner, Forrest has pulled this stunt before and it’s getting ridiculous. If you lose you should stick around and congratulate your opponent, running away and crying is not what this sport is about, it goes against everything martial arts stands for.

by David W-S on Aug 12, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Sportsmanship. Plain and simple. It’s about respecting your opponent, yourself, and the game. If you loss, so what? Shake hands, thank the fans for their support, and thank god that you are one of the luck few who gets to do what they truly love for a living.

it is that simple, he cried like a baby when he got knocked out by jardine and he ran away to cry like a baby in private this time, he is a crying baby..

lol do you guys really care? sportsmanship is great and all… but after the fight is over, who cares if he leaves? he did what he came there to do, try and beat someone, and he lost, what else do you want from him? would you rather have had him trash talking? saying he got cheap shotted or that anderson greased or roided or whatever? who gives a flying f after the fight is over

Hey if you want to know what real respectful fighter thinks….go to bjpenn.com

by Santiago69us on Aug 12, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

All this hate for Forest, I feel bad for the guy, he’s one of the nicest guys in mma while also being smart and funny. He’s not the best and he’s more than aware of it, but he fights the top competition and pulls off a few wins here and there. And all this “sportsmanship” and “being respectful” you guys are goin on about is bs, just trying to justify your hate for the guy, he’s a better man than the lot of ya. Hope he comes back from this loss, it’ll be a hard one to get over.

by Rawrr on Aug 12, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, listen to all of you NON fighters talk about sportsmanship and all that. What do you guys know? Just because you watch mma or train at a local gym, doesn’t mean shit. I watch football and play in a local flag league, let me call Peyton Manning and tell him how its done. Jesus Christ, the guy trained his ass off for months and got completely handled, you all would run out to, so stop talking like you have a clue to what your talking about.

by gay mezger is my bitch on Aug 13, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. It is too easy to hate. He deserves to be alone after that DEFEAT. You guys that are calling him a “Crybaby” have probably never failed at anything, probably never worked hard for anything, and certainly never gotten your ass kicked in front of millions of people who either count on you or despise you. He has every write to cry about it. He deserves respect for showing up. Silva is the greatest fighter in History wether he admits it or not. Griffin isn’t going anywhere.

by BILLYCARNAGE on Aug 13, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t really understand all this talk of sportsmanship. While it’s nice to see fighters shake hands post fight it’d not compulsory. The guy was on the end of probably the most embarrassing beating in MMA history, it’s not surprising he wanted to get out of there as quickly as he could.

No one seems to care about Anderson baiting and taunting him mid fight when it was clear to anyone that Forrest could barely stand. Good sportsmanship?

by MaturdayNight on Aug 13, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i know if i got beat like that i wouldnt realy want to stick about theres nothing wrong with what he did imo and im sure silva wasnt bothered either infact he was praising griffin saying hes a good guy after the fight

I dont have a problem with fighters leaving after a loss. They are there own men if they want to leave let, just because its not they way you would react or the way you think they should act doesn’t make it wrong. I lost in my first fight, the thought of losing had never crossed my mind so when it happens your really crushed. I got up and Ill admit through a little fit and immediately walked out of the ring. I wasnt mad at my opponet just myself, very disappointed in myself. When I saw my opponet back stage I went right over and shoke his hand and congradulated him.

Yes you are thinking of when he knocked out Uno in like 10 seconds then ran to the locker room, only to return a minute later and get interviewed. Tito did a similar thing after his fight with Vitor, he ran to the top of the stands, only to return to the octagon to hear he had won a split decision, one I still think he lost! That would have been great if he hadn’t eeven won after all the theatrics!

The thing about that BJ fight was Rogan ran to interview the loser first… Spencer Fisher if I remember correctly. BJ was a touch pissed so he pimped his own website and left.

by DJ on Aug 12, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah in his second fight with Caol Uno, but he came back. Difference is that BJ won that fight, I don’t think he’s done it after a defeat.

‘Humiliating’ losses happen all the time. You wanna skip out on the interview fine but you stick around to have your opponents hand to be raised. I think the only reason it’s ok is if you’re being tended to my medical staff.

You win some, lose some…it comes with the game. He should have manned up and stuck around. Look at Frank Mir after the beatdown and verbal slashing he took from Lesnar at UFC 100, he didn’t cry and run out of the cage. He took it like a man, got his butt back in the gym the following week and stated preparing for his next fight.

I’m sure the gladiators in Rome were congratulating each other after they were slaughtered by their opponent; head chopped off flying in their air while they were screaming “Great kill”. There is real definition of sportsmanship. You have to go back to the very roots of sports.

Well, to me its important to stay for the official announcement, as its a sign of respect for the sport and the opponent, and sportsmanship is a big thing imho.

by erik on Aug 12, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

I think people who are big into this whole “it’s unsportsmanlike to not wait for the guy’s hand to be raised,” are a bunch of self righteous hypocrites. They all get boners when people do all the trash talking and name calling before a fight, but it’s unsportsmanlike to not stay for an announcement of the inevitable? Come on, find something else worth complaining about, because this certainly is not it. MMA news must be slow the past few days.

C’mon man, there is an unwritten rule in this sport where and in pretty much all combat sports where you stay for the decision and shake your opponents hand, whatever you think of them. Forrest running away would be like the losing team in a football match running off the pitch as soon as the game ended, without shaking their opponents hands or trading shirts, it is a show of massive disrespect against your opponent and the sport.

by David W-S on Aug 12, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree! Big deal if Forrest wanted to get out of there quick. You jerk-off’s have never been KOed let alone embarrassed the way Forrest was. I wish Forrest the best.

You’re missing the/our point! its’s understandable that he is pissed off, dissapointed, humiliated, etc.

BUT

when you’re a professional in the highest eschelon of fighting you should act appropriately, it’s the classy thing to do. if you lose that’s fine but take it like a man with your head up!

He’s a grown man whose chosen to fight for a living despite having a glass chin. Gimme a break. Good thing he had the sense to stop being a cop. There are alot more instances in life where you have to keep your composure and emotions in check.

by DSmith on Aug 12, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

“he doesn’t owe anyone anything” Boom, we’re probably not going to agree but yes he does owe somebody something. He owes the UFC, his fans, AND his sponsers. How the hell do you think he made his millions?

by McArthur on Aug 12, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not justifying it, but I believe Forrest was just plain embarassed and made a poorly concieved decision. I’m not convinced even he thought he’d win the fight, but the cold hard reality is that Silva made him look extraordinarily lousy. At some point before the last knockdown Forrest knew he was toast and essentially he wanted to disappear…..mug pretty much still intact. Looking ahead however, this type of loss will be extremely difficult for him to rebound from. How does a fighter (who’s had the belt) convince himself he can still be a major player in the division, after someone who moved up in wt schooled him that bad?

by CL on Aug 12, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

"he doesn’t owe anyone anything" is a crap argument, without the fans being interested in the sport or the UFC to promote/push the developement of MMA he would still be a nobody. Everyone acts like if we weren’t here, paying money to see him fight, he’d somehow still come up with a boat load of $$$ and all kinds of fame.

How could you disrespect the sport and your opponent this way? You should be ashamed of yourself. Blah. Blah. Blah.” Stop preaching. I am willing to bet that none of the people speaking from their soap box on this issue have any idea what it is like to train and fight at that level so until you do, spare me the speeches on sportsmanship.

yeah i reeally didn’t care, i thought it made him look a little stupid but thats his problem not mine. i was a little more disappointed in bj saying go to bj penn.com to hear what he has to say, shit people already bought tickects and paid for ppv he should have answered some questions and than plugged his site.

by roy on Aug 12, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not going to defend BJ’s interview either, but at least he shook Kenny’s hand instead of walking off before the official announcement. BJ always pulls stunts like that, he’s the least reliable fighter when it comes to interviews.

Forrest acted like a tool, he showed no sportsmanship and made a mockery of himself and the sport. Even children are taught in all sports to congratulate the winner/commisserate the loser, no matter what their personal feelings towards the opposition. For someone who is supposed to be a classy guy to run away and cry after being beaten two times, yet gets paid a lot of money to compete, it is poor that he showed less respect to his opponent than a child would.

Think about what Brock did after beating Mir… got in his face and yapped. He should have been the bigger person, congratulated Frank for his effort and thanked him for the opportunity for the rematch.

But no, Brock pisses in Frank’s bloody face, pisses on the sponsors (Bud Light), and disrespects his wife.

There is some growing up needed by a few fighters.

What do you read? Why don’t you try reading my post again Kevin. It says “If it isn’t a main event or a decision then the camera is never on the loser anyhow.” You are on here saying how disrespectful it it and then in other threads you back fighters like Nick Diaz and BJ Penn. Those are two of the most disrespectful people in business. BJ always has an excuse if loses and I’m not even going to type all the crap that Diaz pulls. I think you either have a double standard or just like to argue.

by CaptainAmerica on Aug 12, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Really, because it wasn’t a main event and I’m 100% they would have interviewed forrest
2. I’ve been all over Diaz these last few days for being immature, a moron and a drug addict that is throwing his career away, and
3. Bj made an excuse for GSP 2 that was caught on tape 9although I say HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH OUTCOME), Hughes 2 he separated a rib, but I never heard him mention it.

I agree with you about Diaz and Penn. If you think what Forrest did was disrespectful, yet defend either of those two, then you have evaluate your objectivity.

Considering this was the co-main event and a very high profile match-up, it wasn’t classy at all of Forrest to run despite a humiliating defeat.

Mir took much more of a pounding and had to eat crow like none other but he stayed around and took it like a man.

Not only did Forrest lose the fight, he also lost a lot of respect.

Emotions are one thing, but if you can’t control yourself, you need to change deal with the consequences of acting like a baby. I like Forrest, but he’s an employee of the UFC, and it’s his obligation to adhere to their wishes.

It was funny as hell though IMO, forrest is an odd guy, both of andersons last 2 fights were kind of bizarre in there own way. Seriously forrest lost so bad it almost looked rigged, forrest is one hot and cold guy though it was definitely a cold one for him. I knew he would lose badly in an all out exchange but not that bad, how cote made it to 3 rounds with silva is just odd.

by nathan on Aug 12, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Cote has a fantastic chin and Silva respected his right hand. And Cote didn’t get baited into reaching for Silva’s head with wild combinations. I also think Silva might have wanted to take that fight into the later rounds to show his critics that he could fight well in the championship rounds.

role model for who? Parents are role models, if you want your kids to look up to sports ’stars" then we are all in trouble! Not just you, anyone who wants their kids to look up to them! there are very few sports figures that have character worthy of being deemed “role models!”

by kevin on Aug 12, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Many children look up to sport stars…It may make some kids want to get good grades so he can make the bball team and become the next Air Jordon. Or a kid might not misbehave so he can attend his next karate class b/c he thinks he will be the next GSP …Teachers, public figures, athletes and also Parents are all strong role models for kids.

by robbyc on Aug 12, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

If that were the case robby, I’d agree. Kids (mainly) look up to the thugs and guys who break the law and the rules. If more kids ooked up to GSP, Tom Brady orTiger Woods, we’d be better off, but they are too busy looking up to Michael Vick or in my day Dennis Rodman!

by kevin on Aug 12, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a difference between looking up to somebody for athletic skills and looking up to someone for their character traits. How the phuck can you look up to someone that you know next to nothing about. You don’t know what kind of people (husbands, fathers, brothers..) those athletes (or any other public figure) are.

Mac, if anyones kids look up to athletes more than their parents as far as guidance and how to act, I feel bad for the parents. My son love Tony Hawk (who is one of the few worthy of being a “role model”), but he doesn’t know anything about Tony Hawk other than he skateboards. But he has manners and is a nice “young man/little boy” because of myself and more so my wife!

by kevin on Aug 12, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

thats great and I agree…fact of the matter though is that nobody expected Forest to do that…fighters often don’t make the best role models as their emotions run high…Lebron seemed to be a good role model until…Forest seemed to be a good role model until…Hawk IS a great role model but who knows what goes through their head when emotions run high…you can’t censor everything and it only takes one word, or gesture to influence a young mind…athletes are usually on LIVE TV so regardless of what YOU or I teach our kids or allow them to watch there is ALWAYS the chance they will see something we’d rather them not see…its something only the athlete can control as it happens in split seconds…primarily it is up to the parents to decide whats best for their kids and what they can watch but like I say…TV personalities are often volitile and unpredictible making our jobs as parents more difficult

by McArthur on Aug 12, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

by charlyw on Aug 12, 2009 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Theres a few douchebag things you can do after a fight:

1. Continue to badmouth your opponent and sponsors (Lesnar)
Honestly, how stupid is this. Get your aggression out in the ring, and don’t be a moron after you win.
2. Immediately run to the back because you’re feeling a big emo (Griffin)
Imagine if everyone did this. I think fighters should get penalized if they run away. Forrest got paid an obscene amount of money for those few minutes in the ring, the least he can do is be a man and talk to his fans.
3. Ignore Joe Rogans questions and promote your website (Penn)
As if BJ needed another reason to hate him. Look BJ, nobody cares about your stupid website. The fans didnt pay big money to be directed to a website.

by MMAFan on Aug 12, 2009 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair to Lesnar his crazy rant would get more people watching his next fight and at least BJ stuck around, but who in their right mind would think “remember that Forrest guy who ran away and cried because he lost, he’s fighting again this week lets buy this PPV and watch him run away and cry again”.

by David W-S on Aug 12, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i still say he owes Anderson Silva and the fans an apology … NOT for the fight but his actions after the fight, totally classless

by bDavid on Aug 12, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

He took a whooping. So I dont blame Forrest. Better to run out and get your shizz together back stage, than brake down in front of millions in the cage while Joe Rogans asking what went wrong. Some people are more emotional than others. Forrest shouldnt be criticized for that.

As long as you go give your opponent a nod backstage afterwards, then theres no problem.

A lot worse goes on. Brock Lesnar anyone? Because id of prefered it if Brock had run off than the performance he gave after his fight at 100. And I lost count now at how many fighters answer a completely different question to what they’ve actually been asked. Those guys are ‘good as’ not there.

I know what it is like to compete in sports and have trained in karate, so I know how important respect is in any sport, as well as martial arts. I was taught at a young age to respect the competition as well as the sport and I feel that Forrest behaved in a disrespectful way. I am competetive and hate to lose but I wouldn’t dream of running away from the opposition because I lost and for a well paid professional athlete to do this two times is ridiculous.

My babe ruth baseball team was the same, we were gods until my last year, then I was the only all star on the team, I had to suck it up and lose with dignity, never did I not shake hands and give the opposing team props. Something looked fishy with Forest right from the start. His punches and especially one of his kicks looked like he was moving in slow motion. It looked to me like he wasn’t trying. Then he goes down from a fade away jab like a WWF wrestler. Looked like he was hamming it up to me. Check out how he throws his leg up when he hits the canvas and puts his arms out to the sides. He wasn’t unconcious. So why’d he give up like that? It looked unnatural to me, like he was acting. The fight got stopped pretty quick for a guy that wasn’t out cold. Then he gets up and is out of the ring 16 seconds after getting supposedly knocked out (Yes I timed it). And bolts to the dressing room faster than any of his movements during the fight.
I will admit to just having watched JFK (great movie btw) but something smells like Va J J here. Is it just me?

FORREST GRIFFIN’S ACTIONS ARE EXCUSABLE

considering the circumstances

Um, has anyone even realized the insane amount of disrespect Anderson “the shithead” Silva shows to every single one of his opponents? Have you ever seen a professional fighter offer his hand out to another fighter when he’s down solely for the purpose of humiliating him in front of millions of people? Have you ever seen a professional fighter drop his hands and slip, bob and fade his opponent’s punches solely to once again humiliate them? If you thought Brock Lesnar flipping off the crowd was disrespectful, have you ever heard a fighter say in a post fight press conference something along the lines of “I don’t have to apologize for my performance, you guys are the ones giving me my huge paychecks. If you don’t like it, go watch someone else fight.” Oh yea, Anderson Silva does/did that shit. And if you’re thinking, “Didn’t Silva apologize after UFC 97?” His manager/translator covered his ass because he knew better than to translate what that cocky shit really said, because everyone knows most Americans know only one language, and it definitely isn’t Portuguese. “http://mmablips.dailyradar.com/article/did_anderson_silva_really_apologize_for_performance/” is the link, but the article has been erased from the website it was hosted off of already.

As for Forrest, yes it’s disrespectful to the fans, but given the emotional state that he was in, It’s our job to “excuse” him and recognize his case as an exception. Have you ever been crying so much that you couldn’t go to class or even outside? Imagine what Forrest felt after being humiliated by some cocky ass bald motherfucker who looks black but he’s just “Brazilian” in front of millions of people. Maybe if you’d all get your heads out of your asses and stop pointing your fucking fingers at him saying how “disrespectful it was” and “oh how could Forrest do this to us,” why don’t you realize that Forrest is one of the few fighters left that fights for the fans, and not necessarily to win. Any talk Forrest had of winning the fight is purely to build up height and his own confidence. If you watch smaller interviews he constantly mentions that he is sure he will lose, and that he thinks he’s done his fair share of pushing the pace and making fights interesting, but he’s going to have to one more time for this fight.

So yes, the ultimate decision to have the gameplan that he did was his fault, but we, the fans, are partly responsible for this in the sense that we expected and demanded it of him.

So what I’m saying is, does A. Silva’s horrific showings of disrespect and our pressuring of Forrest to perform with an extremely dangerous and flawed gameplan make him running out of the octagon in tears excusable?

It all depends on the ability of every person on an individual level to assess the extenuating circumstances and base their judgment off of that. But to me, it’s completely excused.

by chase on Aug 13, 2009 7:48 AM EDT reply actions

This is up there with the biggest pile of shit ive ever read on any mma blog. You just dont like Silva so you try to defend Griffin. Everyone wants to see Silva in a form that he looks untouchable, some want to see him get challenged – he showed a next level of MMA and exposed Griffin for what he really is – an average joe with a few wins, but no major wins that make him look solid. Every fighter likes/needs to show dominance – we love that, so for him to offer his hand was part of the show. Forrest was not only defeated but broken in less than 5 minutes – but thats no excuse to run out on the fans who came to see him – not excusable at all. Isnt that what you call a Bitch Move ?

by Insain on Aug 13, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

In any other fight I might agree that this type of thing is disrespectful, however…. I can’t help but feel like in this particular case it doesn’t even matter. Anderson Silva doesn’t need Forrests respect, and competes on such a different level that what this really equates to is the Master schooling a novice, and the novice naturally storms off defeated in ever sense of the word.

The entire thing is just one more testament to Anderson Silva’s mastery over the art of fighting, and Forrest without illusions knows it.

This wasn’t even a competition.

Enough Said!

by Chris on Aug 15, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Im not here to argue, I only want to add some things I see missing here.

A. We seem to be under the impression Forrest has a glass jaw.
EXCUSE ME? Was anyone else watching his fight with Stephan Bonnar or Rampage? In both fights, they stood and pounded on each other for 3 and 5 rounds, respectively. Many consider his fight with Bonnar to be the fight that started the explosion of MMA popularity today. Also, he was a warrior in his fight with Rampage (who is an animal). He is not BY FAR the biggest, strongest, or most skilled guy in the UFC, in his weight class, maybe his gym. But hes a tough dude. On the flip side, yes Silva made him look stupid…theres really no excuses for that. Silva is a ninja.

B. Forrest wasn’t just pissed. Pissed is history. Forrest is, quite frankly, unstable; very emotional. Everyone seems to think hes a baby for running out. So running out makes him less of a man than standing in the ring bawling on a microphone in front of millions of people? I don’t quite understand. I will admit bawling is the LAST thing you want to do after loosing a fight….especially not twice…but MAYBE it was better he ran off instead of drown Joe with his tears. Right or wrong, it might have been for the best.

C. Its VERY easy to say coulda woulda shoulda when you’re not in someone elses shoes. You can say, “Im in Karate/Tae Kwon Do/Judo and lost and Ive never cried before.” Well Im sorry, but you’re not in his shoes. You havent delt with what he’s delt with getting to where he is, only to have one of, if not THE most embarassing knockout ever. Some people take things different ways…he decided to take it like..well, an infant. Who are we to say he should’ve handled it better? We havent walked in his shoes. Go through what he went through, THEN critisize; otherwise, its just hypocracy.

D. Lets talk respect. Ill be the first to admit, running out of the ring isn’t exactly sportsman-like. Yes, its argueably disrespectful, yes its kind of infantile, but did anyone see Anderson IN THE RING? Bobbing and weaving with his hands down, baiting Forrest to swing, straight up TAUNTING him. Taunting ANYONE during ANY sport isn’t classy, and it never will be. Yes Forrest was made a fool of, but more so because Silva stood there and made sure of it. A classy fighter would have slowed him down, knocked him out, then congradulated him afterwards. Maybe if Forrest wasnt made such a fool of, he wouldnt have been so upset.

I will admit, I am a Griffin fan and I am embarrassed in how he fought then acted afterwards, but cut the guy some slack. He DID have the belt at one point (not just anyone can obtain that…is DOES say you are the best in your weight class), he DID beat Rampage, Shogun Rua, Hector Ramirez, and 13 others. Yes he was made to look stupid, but Im sure thats about 16 more wins than the majority of the people on this site heckling him.

Being a forest fan is disappointing right now. He should have stayed for the announcement of the winner. Heath Herring stayed for the end of his fight against Brock Lesnar and Brock’s a true asshole. Anderson is a class act and deserves the respect. Forest lost a few fans after this one but I doubt he cares considering his huge salary. This salary which we the fans have provided him. His opponent and his fans deserve better.
