UFC 106: Jon Fitch vs Ricardo Almeida in the works for Nov. 21

Fresh off his unanimous decision victory over Kendall Grove at UFC 101, MMAmania.com has learned that Ricardo Almeida (11-3) will finally get to make his welterweight debut when he tangles with 170-pound stalwart Jon Fitch (19-3) at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.
Since returning to the sport of mixed martial arts after a self-imposed three-year layoff to open the Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Hamilton, N.J., "Cachorrao" has posted a 3-1 record, which includes wins over Grove, as well as the previously unbeaten Rob Yundt at UFC 81 and Matt Horwich at UFC Fight Night 18.
The lone loss came via split decision to the hard-hitting Patrick Cote at UFC 86 — a fight that earned "The Predator" a title shot against middleweight kingpin, Anderson Silva.
Almeida was expected to make the drop in weight prior to UFC 101; however, Joe Silva offered him a chance to fight in front of his hometown crowd if he remained at 185-pounds to mix it up with "Da Spyder" during the televised portion of the Philadelphia event.
It was an offer he couldn't, and didn't, refuse.
With the hard-fought win behind him, Almeida can now set his sights on the welterweight division -- against arguably one of the toughest competitors in the entire class.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
The former number one welterweight contender returned to the Octagon at UFC 100 to exact revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago, taking the contest via unanimous decision. The Brazilian stunned his good friend and American Kickboxing Academy training partner, Josh Koscheck, with a fight-ending first round uppercut at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" earlier this year.
The Purdue University wrestler now boasts 10 victories for the promotion in 11 attempts. The lone blemish on his record is to welterweight deity Georges "Rush" St. Pierre in their championship match from UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" in Aug. 2008.
And the competition isn't getting any easier.
Stay tuned for more information on the developing UFC 106 fight card as it becomes available.

This will be a great grappling match!

This should definately be interesting!
Fitch usually wins off taking down and grinding his opponents, BUT he’ll have to be weary and MAYBE even want to keep it standing with Almeida’s superb jitz!

paulo thiago would tool almeida in jits… fitch will win a 30-27 fight and put me to sleep

i don’t think he’d “tool” him exactly, Ricardo had fantastic jitz himself…Probabaly the best jitz at 170 (UFC) unless i’m forgetting somebody!
Serra vs Almeida
or
Almeida/Fitch WINNER vs Carlos Condit

I’d love to see Almeida rip Fitch’s arm off, then beat him with it until he’s unconscious. But Fitch will probably grind (by which I mean ‘hump’) his way to yet another boring UD.

I like it too. I see Fitch imposing his will wile fighting out of some choke attempts. This may look a lot like the Diego fight.

Thiago has had two fights in the UFC and only one went to the ground (which he lost), how are you so sure he would even be able to hang with Almeida?

Not to mention Had KOS not been stupid and actually attempted a TAKEDOWN or two (only what he is widley considered the best at) then Paulo would be 0-2 right now!

So it all comes down to the weight cut. Both Fitch and Almeida are 6’ tall and will Fitch is use to using his size as an advantage Almeida is use to fighting larger dudes.
by BILLYCARNAGE on Aug 12, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
perhaps in a straight BJJ tourny, but as far as MMA BJJ goes, I think Dustin takes the cake. He is so creative with his submissions and can pull them off from just about anywhere.

Yea PLUS the first cut is always the toughest and Almeida won’t have a “gimme” fight for his first venture into WW territory!

I don’t think this will be close at all. Fitch will grind him out and win every round handily.

by PW on Aug 12, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fitch will win convincingly. It will be boring, but he will win a 30-27 decision. If Almeida gasses due to the weight cut, he could finish him via TKO gnp.
by LJ on Aug 12, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
JJ & PW…I can’t believe you guys think Fitch will be able to grind this out…Almeida will be almost if not as big as Fitch with a 2nd or 3rd degree Black Belt…one little (and I mean little) mistake and Fitch is toast
by McArthur on Aug 12, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree that a straight bjj tourny, Almeida would probably beat Haze. As far as MMA goes, Haze has WAYYY better stand up, and is even more comfortable on the ground, and his flexibility and tranisitions are so quick. To me, Almeida would only win that fight based off of takedowns and positioning and a decision.
Vs Fitch, I think Almeida will gas mid-2nd round due to the weight cut, and Fitch will win yet another boring decision.
by Synyster on Aug 12, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That black belt wasn’t high-level enough to submit Cote or avoid getting caught in a deep arm-bar by Kendall (lol) Grove. Fitch knows how to avoid submissions and is the far more complete fighter. He will dominate Almeida.

I’m not a BJJ expert, but regardless of what level black belt they have each attained – Maia’s jitz looks several notches better than Almeida’s to me. More fluid, more tricky, better trips and sweeps…

JJ
He got caught but he didn’t get submitted. I thought he beat Cote personally but again Cote is a much bigger guy with real heavy hands so you can’t blame him for not being able to execute a perfect game plan.
Fitch is an excellent grappler and he showed a ton of improvement against Thiago but Almeida presents bigger challenges if he comes in shape. It is a great match-up
Why do people get bored of 2 ground technicians? I thought more fans would appreciate this kind of match up by now.
by BILLYCARNAGE on Aug 12, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hear what you guys are saying… but fighters like Almeida, who rely solely on one discipline and can’t punch their way out of a paper bag don’t exactly get me leaping out of my seat either.
If Kendall had just thrown some uppercuts when Almeida was plodding forward with his head down, he might have tagged him. But Kendall kept throwing straight, feeble downward punches that slid over Almeida’s head. The likely reason for this is that Kendall is an idiot.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 12, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The fact that he got caught in it at all surprised me. And I like watching ground technicians just fine, I just don’t really think that highly of one-dimensional fighters and I think Fitch will overwhelm him.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 12, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
agree…Fitch rarely tries to pass and throws elbows inside a closed guard which is unexciting to watch…he doesn’t take chances and rarely tries to improve his position cause he can inflict enough damage from where he is…efficient strategy but boring

Fitch will easily handle Almeida. Fitch isn’t the most exciting fighter to watch, but the pace he will bring and the size of his gas tank will be too much for Almeida, who has shown weakness in these areas.
by CL on Aug 12, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Almeida is a very decorated BJJ fighter and on paper is outstanding at it and should walk through anyone on the ground, but since his return to the UFC for whatever reason it hasn’t happened. Whilst the likes of Maia and Hazelett are constantly looking for the submission Almeida seems a lot more hesitant and since his return fight hasn’t looked that impressive on the ground considering his credentials.
As for Fitch he’s made a career out of outwrestling BJJ fighters then laying on top of them, defending submission attempts and winning decisions based on control. This has all of the makings of being another Fitch-Thiago style fight, where Fitch is caught in a submission but gets out and uses his wrestling to stay on top en route to a UD. The fact that Almeida is making his first cut to 170 and has questionable cardio, as well as not attempting that many submissions for a guy of his quality, makes me think that this is going to be another mediocre Fitch UD win.

PW: MMa gambling commandments:
-Never bet a fighter cutting down to a lower weight class for the 1st time.
-never bet a fighter making his Octagon debut, especially if he is coming from Japan or an organization that uses a ring
I have about 7 of these commandments but I have a brain fart right now, and cant think of them off the top of my head. I got them written down though. If you really want to know PW, I will post them all tomorrow! Let me know if you want to know, or if you were just busting my balls!

ricardo’s boxing is extremely underrated, he does not have a pedigree per se. but lets face it, if you looked at pedigrees alone, no one would bet on GSP to be the best wrestler in the WW division, he didnt even wrestle until after he started MMA!
Professr Ricardo’s boxing has not been shown yet, but i will bet it has improved considerably in recent months. call it a hunch. A hunch which is backed by the fact that i am in that academy EVERY DAY

Roberto, I think it’s a little strong to say Fitch can’t fight. He’s submitted Fioravanti, Burkman, Carneiro (could have KOed him) and knocked out Thiago Alves in round two after dominating him all of round one. Seems to me that Fitch is trying to make his game as ‘complete’ as he can.
If I as a fighter thought my strengths were in endurance and ground game, why would I NOT use them? It’s kind of ridiculous to state a WW in this era with a 10-1 record “can’t fight”.

It’s sad that someone can go 10 and 1 in the UFC and get no respect from one of the most informed MMA blogs on the net. Like it or not Fitch is clearly the #2 WW in the world.
by Arnold on Aug 13, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good move for Almeida to drop down to WW, he was undersized at MW. His takedowns were much improved against Grove, but I was disappointed that he didn’t go for any submissions, considering his BJJ credentials. It’s pretty embarrassing that a guy as good at BJJ as Ricardo was almost submitted by Kendall Grove.
Fitch is a tough test and should have the wrestling advantage, he is much harder to takedown than Grove and Almeida is far from a proficient wrestler. If he has any chance against Fitch, Ricardo will have to work at his striking and be more aggressive with his BJJ, he can’t rely on position in this fight because Fitch is a master at controlling the fight en route to a decision. The fact that he’s also excellent at defending submissions does not give me much hope for Ricardo in this one. This will be a carbon copy of Fitch-Thiago.

im a huge of of Almeida but for his first fight in a new weight class this is really tough. guys like kampmann and swick got much easier guys when they dropped in weight. i think almedia can only take this by submission, his condition is not close to fitchs, usually the case with a bjj guy compared to a wrestler. i think almedias striking is more refined but neither has great striking by any means. im hoping the time between now and the fight almedia works on his conditioning and weight cutting. im puling for the big dog in this one.

Really if you take GSp out of the picture you have some pretty good fights, i would say Alves or Fitch would be the champion if GSP was out. I really wish for any top contender fights the fights were five or even at least four rounds especially if it’s the main card like Franklin & Belfort not only is better for the fans but the fighters too as they go from being tested in three round fights and then have to go against the champion like GSP and blow your load in the first two or three rounds because that’s what your mentally and physically use too then GSP destroy’s you in the 4th and 5th? Train all you want for your endurance but you go and and fight (X) amount of fights that are 3 rounds you get use to going full out all three rounds as does your body and brain no training can prepare yourself as well as the real thing?

Agree the division is stacked with depth, but there is a major gap between GSP and everyone else. Looking at the list of names, I’m not sure I see anyone upping their game enough to pose a real threat to GSP for the short term anyway? Alves and Fitch may still have the most upside, but I’m not jazzed about either vs GSP anytime soon.

Ricardo is scary good on the ground but since his return he hasn’t transitioned his BJJ skills into MMA as well as others, Hazelett may not be the best BJJ fighter on paper but he has done a great job at applying his skills into the sport and has become a bigger threat on the ground than Ricardo. Almeida didn’t attempt a single submission on Grove despite having top position for the majority of the fight, which is alarming considering how good he is in BJJ.
Look at Miller-Gurgel, Jorge is an outstanding grappler but he got submitted by someone who he would walk through in a BJJ match because Cole has done a better job at applying his skills into MMA than Jorge.

I’m suprised as well, considering that them two are the only guys in WW that are even partially competetive with GSP as well as the fact that Fitch won the first fight by stoppage, I’m suprised that they didn’t give them both a big fight that is marketable and would have a clear cut understudy to GSP. If GSP vacates the WW title after beating Swick/Kampmann then maybe the UFC will put on Fitch-Alves II for the belt. I’m wondering whether this means that Thiago is making the move to MW afterall.

You must be joking right? I don’t always recognize all the ironic trolling techniques that are often used by todays youth on them internet tubes.
You pick:
a). Good one lad LOLOLOLOL!
Sera would get destroyed in about the same time GSP took to finish him. I question your judgement.by 2TimePennConqueror on Aug 12, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why does everyone like to hate on Ricardo Almeida, he won 9 of his last ten fights, and Cote did nothing to Beat him,… Kendal has KO many guys and he could not do anything to Ricardo either..Did you all forget about the Amazing choke from his first fight back??? He also beat Nate marquart,,, IT will be a great fight ,, stop talking shit about fighters, we are suppost to be fans of the sport.. no critics or haters!!!

I see Fitch winning this one via UD. He’s been in there with some crafty jui-jitsu guys before and always manages to stifle submission attempts. I’m hoping that maybe Fitch will get a TKO, but it’ll probably be desision. But whatever, I like watching the man work either way.
I hope they can find someone to take out GSP shortly, he’s getting really boring. He’s passing people’s guards like butter but never goes for the submission. He just pounds on them until the bell goes or they give up. At least, that’s the way it’s been in his last three fights.
Swick vs GSP is kind of intriguing. Most likely, GSP will take Swick down and ground and pound him until he can take no more. BUT ‘Quick’ Swick has really, really fast hands. There’s an okay chance he could catch GSP early, or at the start of a round. George’s chin is definitely questionable. If Swick lands a good combination GSP would be in trouble, but he’d have to stay on his feet long enough to do it.
