WEC 42 medical suspensions: Brian Bowles breaks hand, could be out until 2010

medical suspensions

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its list of medical suspensions for WEC 42: "Torres vs. Bowles," which took place on Sunday, Aug. 9, from "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

In all, 12 of the 22 athletes who competed on the card have been sidelined by the commission's doctors, including brand new bantamweight champion Brian Bowles, who suffered a broken left hand during his title-capturing first round win over Miguel Torres in the main event.

It's possible that he could be out for the rest of the 2009 fight season unless a physician clears him to return sooner.

Torres will also have to sit out for a while following the brutal knockout. He'll be out of action for up to two months and will have to avoid any contact in training for the next six weeks.

Here is the complete list of WEC 42 injuries and their medical instructions:

Star-divide

  • Brian Bowles: Suspended until Feb. 6 or must have left hand cleared by an orthopedic doctor first
  • Miguel Torres: Suspended until Oct. 9 and no contact until Sept. 24
  • Danny Castillo: Suspended until Feb. 6 or must have left hand and left knee cleared by an orthopedic doctor first
  • Ricardo Lamas: Suspended until Sept. 9 and no contact until Aug. 31
  • Leonard Garcia: Suspended until Sept. 9 and no contact until Aug. 31 because of a left orbital laceration
  • Cole Province: Suspended until Aug. 31 and no contact until Aug. 24 because of lacerations on his nose
  • Shane Roller: Suspended until Aug. 31 and no contact until Aug. 24 because of a left eyelid laceration.
  • Marcus Hicks: Suspended until Sept. 9 and no contact until Aug. 31
  • Phil Cardella: Suspended until Aug. 31 and no contact until Aug. 24 because of lacerations on his nose
  • Diego Nunes: Suspended until Oct. 9 and no contact until Sept. 24
  • Rafael Dias: Suspended until Aug. 31 and no contact until Aug. 24 because of lacerations on his nose.
  • LC Davis: Suspended until Feb. 6 unless cleared by an ophthalmologist after Aug. 31 with absolutely no contact until Aug. 24.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

The WEC was really selling Torres as the best P4P, and the poor guy got smoked. At least he was really honorable in defeat.

Top fighters get caught all the time. Its the nature of the sport.

At 5’9 Torres should gain some muscle and consider moving up in weight to 145 or 155 (yeah, Big Zino, I mean that).

by OJR on Aug 11, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he kept getting rocked dude, the whole first round he was getting tagged, he just finally fought someone who was near the same height, and could take a punch in order to throw one, bowles is going to reign on like mike brown is

by randy murders on Aug 11, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Naw, I say Brown loses in the rubber match with Faber. Had Faber not busted his hand, he would have pwned Brown. I’m not a Faber fanboy. I was rooting for Brown. But it seemed obvious to me that the broken hand is what gave him the defeat. Faber kept up a fierce pace using only elbows and no real submission power because of the hand. Says a lot. Here’s hoping he doesn’t bust something next time, because I think he can take Brown.

by MMACrossfire on Aug 11, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it wouldn’t be a rubber match since the 1st two fights went to brown. but i agree with u, faber would have won that fight for sure if not for breaking his hand in the 1st. faber kept a competitive fight even without the use of his hand, and i think he hurt his other hand as well earrly in the fight. faber will get his title back when givin another shot

by bullsh*t on Aug 11, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A rubber match would mean that Faber actually won one of the first two matches.

And no.. he won’t win. Brown is too strong for Faber at 145. He controlled every round and was dominating even before Faber broke his hand. Brown is incredibly tough.. he’ll eat Faber’s shots all day. I’d like to see them fight again just so that it’s 100% decisive either way, but I don’t think it would be any different.

He’d be a super small 155er, top tier but would be man handled by a natural 180er like Maynard. He’s still top 5 p4p in my eyes.

by DSmith on Aug 11, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has to redeem that loss to get back into the p4p picture imo…….

by Locked up and chained down in the dungeon known as "MODERATION" on Aug 11, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like his chances. Serra was a midget 5’6 and did decently in the 155lb range.

by OJR on Aug 11, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I meant top 10

by DSmith on Aug 11, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Very true. I think he’d do very well but some of the bigger wrestlers will give him problems. There are a lot of great fights for him at 155. The UFC just needs to hurry up and fold the WEC totally into the company. Maybe then we could get a UFN every month.

by DSmith on Aug 11, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We already have one almost every other month, and the WEC puts on events pretty much every other month – if not more often.

The UFC would not be able to absorb the WEC because they would then have too many weight divisions to properly promote and display thier fighters.

by ViolentMike on Aug 11, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

plus aside from 4 or 5 guys (Torres, Faber and brown), no one really cares about the lower weights. My wife woke up during the fight before Torres and asked why I was watching midget mma

LMAO.

by OJR on Aug 11, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

seriously, that small guy against the guy who won, who was built like a midget!

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why wouldn’t someone care about the fighters in lower weight classes? I love watching WEC fights…a lot of the guys down there have some serious skills and the pace is always very fast. You don’t see very many guys gassing either so you know you’re gonna get non-stop action for the most part. There may not as many KOs cause some of them lack the power but you’ve got guys like Aldo who are small but are destroying guys left and right. Plus if you got rid of the smaler weight classes…where would Alex Karalexis fight? Everyone cares about him and Andy Wang.

by Buster Bluth on Aug 11, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, they are exciting, I’m just speaking from a general consensus. If they were popular, they’d be played on a major network or ppv and be making major money. Non hard core fans are interested in heavier weight classes, it’s a fact!

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My fav TUF moment of all time:

Andy Wang sobbing in the corner and BJ making fun of him.

Still giggling like an idiot now…

I think the WEC is awesome and when the UFC dominates Strikefarce the WEC will become a more dominant force. Personally, I love the WEC and it is a great organization

it was bound to happen. People like Bowles and Brown are absolutely jacked for their weight class. Torres toned but thin.

by Bill Maher on Aug 11, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Torres was like 37 and 1. You’re kind a dumb if you don’t think he deserved P4P status. He walked through tons of top competitors.

by StuckinMod(FormerlyFedorfightscans,Sp00ner1234) on Aug 11, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Class act. He’ll be back, no doubt.

by Sir Chokemout on Aug 11, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the Torres loss will prove Fedor ,Lyoto and Silva are the top p4ps. Torres is unreal and a great fighter but after taking a loss while the 3 mentioned haven’t for years, he’ll take some time to get his name back up in that list. Same happened to GSP, except he lost to some one who was a worse underdog. Can’t wait to see Torres comeback and hopefully rebound well

by IrishKev on Aug 11, 2009 2:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

IMO Torres fights in a pretty weak division. You don’t see the well rounded fighters that you see in other divisions at bantamweight. I was not surprised that Bowles knocked him out at all. Eff Fedor as a top p4p. Dude needs to fight outside of exhibitions to get my respect. He hasn’t fought anybody worth mentioning in years now. Silva, GSP, Lyoto are a fair top 3 in my book.

by LJ on Aug 11, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ has to be up there. Just because he got beat at 170 doesn’t take away from his P4P in my book.

by halljam2 on Aug 11, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

bj is the man at 155 but it’s hard to consider him in the top 3 based on his whininess and the performances of the other 3, GSP, Lyoto, and A. Silva. Those are the top 3 imo…………..

by Dragon on Aug 11, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes it does.

Do you know what P4P means?

by Lester The Pimp on Aug 11, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t realize whininess is a criteria for p4p. lester, you obviously don’t get p4p if you say machida and gsp and fedor are on it but not BJ, he actually has fought in 3 weight classes, the others haven’t! I’ll tell you this, he cant beat GSP, but could beat 90% of the WW’s out there today, and won’t be beat at 55!

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

p4p means bj would be able to go up in weight and win as well, now maybe he could beat everyone but gsp who knows but p4p top 5 isn’t anywhere bj should be mentioned

silva
machida
gsp
fedor
nick diaz

should be top p4p rankings

by randy murders on Aug 11, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Silva is a huge middleweight and good sized light heavyweight so I’m not sure how important the moving up thing is. BJ is as dominant in his division as GSP is. Do you honestly think that GSP would defeat BJ if he was a natural welterweight. It would be a war and a toss up in my opinion. No way in hell would he be able to outmuscle BJ and take him down. And this is coming from one of GSP’s biggest fans and not a tremendous admirer of BJ (as a person that is). BJ deserves respect and to be mentioned in the same breath as GSP, Machida and Anderson.

by Adam T. on Aug 11, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

come on randy murders, if someone dominates their division, they are considered p4p best, never mind when someone has been a champion in 2 weight classes, moved up to a 3rd and would be competitive still at ww (while not able to beat GSP). Fedor could easily fight at LHW but doesn’t, some could argue that until the emergence of brock, HW was the weakest division… unless you’re counting fedor’s numerous wins against true MW’s as P4P! lol

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy murders – Get the fuck outta here Nick Diaz. Fight someone serious than he can even be ranked top 10 in a class weight.

by WB on Aug 11, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Diaz is top 10, probably 7 or so. we debated this a lot this past weekend in philly!

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Silva is not a huge MW. Remember against Thales he came in at 182 I think it was. That only makes him better in my opnion. He rules a division where he is mid sized at best and could rule as an under sized person at LHW but would never fight Lyoto
So I think it’s pointless to send Silva up to that division and beat the no.1 contenders and let Lyoto do nothing. I know it won’t happen but you can’t send Silva up to fight people like Irvin again. Not to take anything away from Forrest either but Silva needs to be fighting interesting match-ups where it can be argued that he could loose. Maybe Randy Couture, Sho-gun etc.

by IrishKev on Aug 11, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I say put him against the loser of Rampage/Rashad… he destroys both!

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Silva cuts to middleweight from well over 200lbs. He definitely is not mid-sized at best.

by Adam T. on Aug 11, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would put Diaz in the top 10.

by OJR on Aug 11, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

P4P has nothing to do with going up in weight and winning. It’s a perception based ranking on who is the best (assuming everyone weighed the same). Fedor would smash Anderson Silva if they ever fought at 205 or some sort of catch weight, but he’s still ranked lower by most because he has fewer significant wins in the past couple years.

BJ losing to GSP doesn’t hurt his case much. If GSP moved up and fought Hendo, he’d get smoked. Should that hurt his case? And Nick Diaz belongs nowhere near top 5 P4P until he beats some of the 170 lb wrestlers of the UFC. Koscheck and Hughes would beat him down.. let alone GSP and Fitch.

by ballhawkdawk on Aug 11, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the one argument I have against Machida, who i definitely respect and could easily see him dominating the division for a while, is that he has not fought many top guys, rashad, who has looked decent, did lose to tito no matter what anyone says, basically went to a draw with bisping, and looked very beatable against forrest… and thiago silva has always been a bit overrated in my book, gotta give him the beatdown he put on rich franklin for sure though… but i want to see how he holds up against guys like rampage, shogun, henderson before i start saying he is the best LHW ever

by brendan(formerly a bunch of names that no one cares about) on Aug 11, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, Brendan. Machida definitely has the tools to take out the top guys like Shogun, Rampage, and Luis Cane, but he has to do it first. He’s #5 on the P4P list for me behind Fedor and the other 3 UFC champs not named Brock.

by ballhawkdawk on Aug 11, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good post LJ. Agreed. However, as I posted prior to the Florian fight, I believe BJ Penn should be up there in the lb for lb rankings also, a four way tie for first possibly.
I honestly believe that Machida will prove to be the best in the next year to year and a half. It’ll be interesting to see if him and anderson fight. Even if they do I wander just how motivated they will be to finish the other and fight aggressively.

by Adam T. on Aug 11, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If BJ and GSP were natural middleweights they would give Anderson Silva one hell of a fight. Imagine how many times he would have to hit Penn to knock him out. That would be crazy.

by Adam T. on Aug 11, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ would definitely be my #4!

by LJ on Aug 12, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Very good post LJ, and I couldn’t agree more with your top 3. Enough with the Fedor bullshit. He has taken himself out of this discussion. You don’t get to be included in the best p4p conversations when you fight twice a year against guys that suck.

Can someone please explain to me how Nick Diaz can be even whispered in this thread???

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Lyoto/Anderson/GSP are p4p guys. Fedor needs to beat someone tough convingly. The HW division outside the UFC is very weak.

by Miketsi on Aug 11, 2009 2:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No its not “very” weak, but UFC obviously has the best ones atm.

Fedor and GSP are still ahead of Silva, beating Griffin aka glassjaw aka power like a lw doesnt mean much.

HEY STRYKER, here is a caesr gracie direct quote from yesterday that proves his enabling and vested interest in Nick fighting. If he were a true friend, he’d sit him down and talk about Nick’s “problem” but he doesn’t want to risk income or students that nick brings in, as well as Nate! Anyone that thinks I’m wrong, go research it, the used to train with a guy named Torres, and mention him after all the fights, they started at his gym, they had a falling out and now have most of his students and he gets no play from the diaz boys any more!
.
"He fights every two months," said Gracie. "It’s too bad for Jay Hieron, but what can you do? If you take the test, what’s going to happen? What’s going to happen is he’s gonna not get licensed in California for over a year and not fight this fight. If you don’t take this test, you don’t fight this fight, and you fight next month, because you have time to flush it out of your system."

P4P top 5 means “I have their poster on my wall and I beat off to replays of their fights.”

Such a stupid comparison, and so very limited given how few guys fight in multiple weight classes, or against people from a different weight class.

All speculation, all nut hugging.

by DirtyML on Aug 11, 2009 4:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

P4P is not some definitive thing. It’s just something for MMA fans to discuss.

Torres earned my respect by how he’s displayed himself in and out of the ring. Classy guy, but not top 10 p4p

by kibbled_bits on Aug 11, 2009 5:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why didn’t he act like a teenage drama queen (ala Urijah) and hold his hand after the fight? Why didn’t he post the pics of his broken hand on Twitter? I know why, because he Won and his name isn’t Urijah Faber

by kibbled_bits on Aug 11, 2009 5:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe it was because he didn’t have to fight 5 rounds with a broken hand like Faber did…

by DL92 on Aug 11, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

your right he did win however, urijah was still in a competitive fight despite 2 broken hands and nearly subbed brown. if he didn’t break his hands whose to say he wouldve lost?
