Frank Shamrock: Nick Diaz is a knucklehead

Props: AOL Fanhouse

Quoteworthy:

"Sadly, it's a big problem because somebody's out a lot of money -- Strikeforce/Showtime -- and you know, that wasn't fair from a professional standpoint. But you know, I'm not matching the fights, and unfortunately, Diaz has a strong name right now, and he has a lot of value to somebody. I mean, UFC has expressed value. We all like Nick, he's just a knucklehead. And hopefully, he'll come into his own because he's coming into his own as a fighter, but his maturity, I think, is 10 years behind that. So I can imagine that being a knucklehead involves: training all day, hanging out with your friends at night, and in Nick Diaz's situation, doing whatever he does, and then train all the time, and think about nothing but fighting. It makes for great fighters, but I think it kind of makes you a little irresponsible sometime."

Strikeforce pillar and former middleweight champion Frank Shamrock sounds off on the decisions Nick Diaz made that cost him a welterweight title fight against Jay Hieron at the 'Carano vs. Cyborg' event on August 15. Diaz missed a scheduled pre-fight drug test on August 7 and then his make-up exam on August 10. Former UFC experiment Jesse Taylor has agreed to fight Hieron on short notice while Diaz is relegated to the sidelines until he manages to sort out his personal issues.

100% agree with Frank

by kevin on Aug 11, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

you know frank is right, nick is immature. if he is to stupid to piss clean much less show up when he is supposed to, then he is not living up to his professional obligations. what a schmuck. bring him on to the ufc and let gsp, or silva kick his ass.

off topic: speaking of gsp i think johnny hendricks may be the guy to beat gsp. 2x ncaa div 1 champ, 1x runner up (to a guy he beat 7 times). gsp would not beat him on the ground. hendricks will have to continue to improve his standup. but within 1 year he should be in contention, in my mind. also he looks like a terorist with that beard!!

I agree with you first part. But on your second, I really hope you were kidding!!!

by JV on Aug 11, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Credentials are nice, but until someone displays the same kind of wrestling dominance inside an octagon, it doesn’t mean a whole lot. GSP would smash him through the mat.

by ballhawkdawk on Aug 11, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

after this, i’m sure the ufc wouldnt even dream of considering bringing him back.

by boz on Aug 12, 2009 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

ok fine, that was a little tongue-in-cheek. maybe a little okie homerism. but one of these days some young buck is going to come around and beat gsp on the ground. its the nature of the game. it may not be hendricks but you never know how he will turn out in a couple of years.

but as far as the beard, i was absoutley not kidding. dude looks like he wants to hi jack a plane.

Shamrock is right, I haven’t cared for either Shamrock’s, but that doesn’t mean Frank doesn’t make a good point. However, Nick does have a medical card and CSAC is a ‘screw u’ type Organization, I believe there was an informal understand promised to Diaz’s camp… then ‘hehe’ NOT. But that’s going back to medicinal purposes for a crazy ‘ADHD case’ like Nick Diaz or learning to live without it. IMO, he’s got the will power, quit the weed, FIGHT! and learn to live agmonst the sober, until the CSAC changes it’s policy.

Frank is right unfortunately, Nick let down his fans, SF and Showtime here, he messed up bad. Really, really frustrating as I’m a big Diaz Bros fan and I can’t believe that he let this massive opportunity slip away all because he likes to get high (I don’t buy into the medical excuse). Smoking that rubbish isn’t going to do his career or health any favours, but Diaz is too damn stubborn to stop.

JJG, Hendricks has a lot of potential to be a force at WW but right now he hasn’t done anywhere near enough to beat GSP. That should be his long-term goal but right now there is a long way to go before he gets to the elite of the division, so hailing him as the guy to dethrone GSP is even dafter than picking Bones Jones to take the belt off Machida.

diaz will still get the title shot. and when it’s announced then it’ll be time for everyone to whine about how much he doesn’t deserve it because of this drug test fiasco.

by jj on Aug 11, 2009 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

Absolutely the smartest thing that has ever come out of Frank Shamrock’s mouth.

What is up with the new lay out!!! It sucks

by JTK5 on Aug 11, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

its better imo

by McArthur on Aug 11, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, if it wasnt broke!

by JV on Aug 11, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

neither were shoelaces before they put the plastic end on but you know that worked out great

by McArthur on Aug 11, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

HEY!! Is anybody elses comment section format different than this morning??? I kinda like it more but nobody seems to be talking about it anywhere. Not bad actually. Makes me feel like what I have to say is more important…easier to follow and know where the hell you are…the thick black lines act as an optical road block, and the centering is brilliant…it literally must have taken Mania, Jesse and their band of merry men months to get this done

by McArthur on Aug 11, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah McArthur it happened to me around 6pm or so’ really wierd but it’s back to it’s orginal format for me?

by DAVE A on Aug 12, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it should be legalized BUT the law is the law. As a fighter, he should prioritize and not smoke. Especially since he has been denied a fight before and had a major victory ruled a no contest because of it.

by Bill Maher on Aug 11, 2009 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

100% agree Mr Maher. A lot of people are turning this into an issue of the legality of Marijuana, which it isnt’t. Its about him breaking a rule.

by RiverHorror on Aug 12, 2009 4:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I just lost what little respect I had left for Nick…..

I didn’t have much, I have a general disdain for both him and his brother, but that little bit… gone.

What a tool. He would officially qualify as one of the people holding back the legalization of pot by taking advantage of the medical provision.

Enjoy your posterboy hippy’s.

by Jas on Aug 11, 2009 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

No one is more upset about this fight not happening then me! i have finally got the nerve back to post again. I really cant stand all this stuff because the bottom line is, Nick is extremely talented.

The good news of this post is, UFC isnt mainly out of cali like strikforce is so hopefully Nick and his camp will put 2 and 2 together and go where he belongs because Dana will take him and the UFC WW division needs new blood. They need Nick.

by Nick Diaz 209 on Aug 11, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

I think Strikeforce will be alright, with M1 behind them, they can recover from this. The huge amount of money and world wide marketing genius that FedorFinkle are bringing in will help offset the loss of this potentially huge, money making fight.

ur being sarcastic?… uhhh’..right?

by DAVE A on Aug 12, 2009 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Nick as a fighter, but he is completely unprofessional.

by Jason on Aug 12, 2009 9:06 AM EDT reply actions

Sorry for this I know some of you are knuckleheads too, but
Pot Head = Knucklehead plain and simple!

by Badguy on Aug 12, 2009 9:11 AM EDT reply actions

im a pothead but in what way am i a knucklehead? i go to work, raise my kids, pay my taxes, and when my kids are in bed i toke up and play video games. whats the problem here?
