Patrick Cote: 'I have to undergo surgery again'

Quoteworthy:
"yeah bad luck again!!! MCL busted in training for my comeback !!! will be out until feburary at least again !!! Go under surgery again tomorow !! thanks for your support guys !!! But I ll be back stronger than ever I swear !!!"
Former number one middleweight contender Patrick Cote — who underwent major ACL knee surgery in November 2008 — talks about going back under the knife this week to now repair a damaged MCL (in the same knee). "The Predator" has been sidelined since shredding his knee while inside the Octagon opposite reigning division champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 back in October 2008. The bout resulted in a technical knockout loss for the Canadian, which he feels may have gone his way if the freak accident never happened. The 185-pound class is now teeming with possible title contenders, making his road back to the summit (now slated for Spring 2010) more than likely a long and difficult one.

Some steroids should help speed up the recovery.
by Mike J on Aug 10, 2009 9:13 PM EDT reply actions
maybe so, but i’ve heard of guys that possibly did steroids when they were young and their knees can’t take it anymore and becomes weak as they get older..

this is great news, the longer cotè is out the better.

Cote may not be a great figher but he isnt an easy win either. The division needs guys like him to keep things interesting and to make sure only the best get to the top.

I don’t know why he’s so excited about the mcl tear with all those exclamation marks!!!

These injuries during training are stupid…
by The Negation on Aug 10, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions
exclamation marks does not have to be for something positive!!!! it’s more of a thing you do to say look here!!!

some of u guys are complete assholes.. the guy is just back from a major operation trying to get back to normal and he fucks up his knee again and will have to undergo another big op. How fucking frustrating do you think that would be. Show a bit of respect..
by Randy for Couture on Aug 11, 2009 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions
Cote is atleast a much better standup fighter than Forrest is, Forrest can’t punch and he has no defense..
by RoBerto on Aug 11, 2009 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely. Anybody who chooses to stand the entire fight against Cote will not have an easy time. The guy has a friggin iron chin and one punch ko power. The problem is that he can be taken down and submitted by most of the elite fighters with relative ease.
by Adam T. on Aug 11, 2009 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Say what you will. Cote took some shots from Silva. Go back and watch that fight. Cote was getting picked apart, but he was faring better than most against Anderson. Also Cote has been known to drop a bomb or two. If he could have held on he may have landed that lucky punch that put Anderson to sleep. Not his fault his knee blew out. Not sure why all the hate? Maybe it’s because he’s Canadian?!
by wAyNe on Aug 11, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions
why cote and thales had a title shot is still a mystery I am trying to figure out..
by shamo84 on Aug 11, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions
Cote didn’t have a hope against Silva because he fights negatively when it matters, look at how boring the Smith and Almeida fights were. Those tactics gave him scrappy wins over those two but against Andy he was getting picked apart. With Cote’s chin and strong hands Silva wasn’t going to rush in and instead picked his shots and comfortably won the first 2 rounds, if Patrick’s knee didn’t go then it would have gone to a decision just like the Leites fight.
Bad news for Cote but at least he isn’t going to be Bisping’s opponent at Manchester. The hope of a top MW taking on Bisping remains. As for Patrick, he’s going to struggle to come back, even if he does return he won’t be the same fighter, look at what happened to Bonnar.

all my favorites are getting these injuries! first overeeem, than irvin, and now cote! hopefully hendo and rampage stay healthy
by Jared on Aug 11, 2009 7:54 AM EDT up reply actions
A knee injury is not something you get stronger from. You’re lucky if you’re ever even 100% again.
by Pat on Aug 10, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions
no it ain’t.. his body can’t take the hard training!
by RoBerto on Aug 10, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions
how is it retarded? Most guys can’t come back after one torn acl, but cote can come back from 2? ok!
by kevin on Aug 10, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Yep, not retarded. Once someone has that type of injury, he/she just doesn’t come back the same. Like my athlete friend. She suffers the same fate, and she ain’t as agile anymore… Cote is done, that is, he’s never gonna come back 100%!
by The Negation on Aug 10, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
exactly, I can agree that you shouldn’t say “who cares” cause some ppl do care and it makes u look a little bad for dropping a comment like that.
by RoBerto on Aug 11, 2009 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions
thats quite unfortunate. wishing you a speedy recovery mr. cote!
by donkeyballs on Aug 10, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions
That is bad news for Cote. Knee injuries are no picnic and Feb is a long way away.
by stevo on Aug 10, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions
That’s a shame. I don’t think he’ll ever be a champ, but he’s a gamer that shows up to every fight ready to go. I hope he recovers and is able to fight this time.

What is up with Corey hill? Is that dude ever comming back?
by What? on Aug 10, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions
He will be out a solid year minimum. Even then it’s gonna be a long time before he can get back to checking kicks.
by NameNotRequired on Aug 10, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he still has a while to go. Probably 2010 for him as well.
by ballhawkdawk on Aug 10, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions
no, he’s not coming back ever if he’s smart. his body is not made for fighting! he’d be wasting his time..
by RoBerto on Aug 11, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m the only Roberto around here. Who do you think you are?
by roberto on Aug 11, 2009 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Don’t care about this at all. I wouldn’t mind Cote, it’s just that he kept talking like he was god for surviving 3 round with Andy. Why Silva didn’t just put him asleep, I’ll never know. If Silva would have knocked him out in the first round like he should have, this injury never would happened. That’s what you get for dancing for 15 minutes.
by Miketsi on Aug 10, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions
“Why Silva didn’t just put him asleep, I’ll never know” …
If you watch the fight again you’ll see that Cote’s defense has very few holes and he actually frustrated silva a bit. The whole time his hands were up, chin was down and nearly as quick as Silva in the scrambles. This guy can take a punch as good as anyone and is a very quick counter striker. I hope we get to see Cote v Silva 2 before Silva’s UFC contract is up (and then goes on to fight some defunct boxer)
by getnickel on Aug 11, 2009 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions
Silva is a counterstriker and is only going to attack if he sees an opening, Patrick has a fantastic chin and fights negatively against any opponents that he deems a threat, if he refused to engage with Scott Smith then he was never going to fight aggressively against Silva. Andy was fighting smart, if not as exciting as normal, and he would have cruised to a decision if Cote’s knee had have held up.

Gotta love that Canadien free medical. That brace doesnt even fit.
by Youtaped on Aug 11, 2009 6:15 AM EDT reply actions
Some poor old man is hobbling around without a knee brace! Wasn’t cost effective for him to keep it.
by wAyNe on Aug 11, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions
> Gas is $1.05/litre. There are 3.7 litres in a US gallon.
> The cheapest no-name brand cigarettes you can find are $10.00/pkg.
> Beer is $21.99/case. And when I say case, I mean a 12 pack. Around $40.00 for 24.
> Our provincial/federal sales tax is conveniently combined into 13%.
“Free” is relative dude.
by DJ on Aug 11, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions
Oh, the surgery & room would be covered along with meds during his hospital stay. The brace would have to be purchased. or may be covered if he has private insurance. You know, the insurance so easily obtainable by MMA fighters.
by DJ on Aug 11, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions
The brace would be free since it is required to stabilize his leg during recovery. I have the exact same one and it was free.
by stevo on Aug 11, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
OK, but I think I made my point to Jet and any others who may think the same of Canadian healthcare.
by DJ on Aug 11, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
DJ, where the hell you live? I am in SW Ontario, and some of those prices seem rather high. I can buy peter jackson smokes for just under $8 a pack, gas is mid 90s, beer….depends, but a lot of the brands are around $28 for a 24.

I’VE NEVER BEEN IMPRESSED BY COTE. He’s a real run-of-the-mill fighter. Yawn.
by Jack on Aug 11, 2009 9:12 AM EDT reply actions
I think you’re using the wrong description. One-dimensional? Yes. Run-of-the-mill? Hardly. You need guys like Cote in any division, guys who can take a punch and give it right back. There aren’t too many of those.
