Monday morning scrap: UFC 101 and WEC 42 weekend in review

Fans of mixed martial arts were once again treated to an action-packed weekend chock full of fights thanks to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) kicking off the month of August with a couple of hours of caged combat.

UFC 101: 'Declaration' went down from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, marking Zuffa's debut in "The Keystone State." BJ Penn submitted Kenny Florian for the lightweight title while Anderson Silva made it look easy by knocking out former light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin.

Less than 24 hours later, WEC 42: 'Torres vs. Bowles' lit up "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada. Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez put on a blistering 135-pound war and Brian Bowles shocked the world by stopping uber-Bantamweight Miguel Torres in the first round.

In cased you missed any or all of it — or just want to keep the discussion alive — below are links to all the major storylines coming out of each show.

M-1 News***

by now everyone knows that Don Frye pulled out of the fight with king MO at the upcoming m-1’s Breakthrough event. Frye has been replaced with Mark Kerr. King MO better stop worrying about Rampage and stop beating on Ancient Cans!

also on this card, Fedor vs. mOusasi in an exhibition match simiar to Fedor vs. Aoki!

by john G on Aug 10, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Lol, didn’t A-Turk manage to beat Kerr? He must be truely awful now.

UFC 101 LIVE RECAP

First of all, let me thank Kevin for arranging this and putting forth alot of effort.

Let me tell you something : Kevin is a cool guy and most importantly : He keeps his word!

Nick from Philly, Dustin from MA, Rob from NY and Deuce from NC made it a great time.

I saw Coleman, Goldy and Arianny on Market St.

Coleman looked ancient in person. Father time is cruel.

Goldy literally had his hands all over Arianny. Discretion is not a part of his vocabulary. Can’t say that I blame him, though.

Glad to see that BJ rebounded from his last loss and DOMINATED Ken.

Now all of you BJ haters can STFU!

It felt nice to be one of the few people cheering for A. Silva while he was being bombarded by boos and insults.

It made the silence that much sweeter after he clowned Griffin. I loved it.

Bow down to greatness, b1tches.

Amir’s stoppage was justified. He was out on all fours and was lucky that Hendricks missed his follow up punches or he would have suffered alot more damage. Good stop.

Pellegrino impressed me with his control. Neer impressed me with his jits.

Leites and Sakara stunk out the joint.

McCrory took a step back. He should have kept it standing.

Philly was a nice time. Looking FWD to the next trip!

Wasn’t this on another thread?? Or am I having de je vu?? Weird………..lol

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I am a BJ hater, and will continue to be, not gonna shut up anytime soon… if kenny actually grabbed his nuts and tried throwing his strikes with some power behind them there was no reason he should have lost that fight, bj is still the most overrated fighter on the planet and he will lose again soon, hell probably get lay and greyd or something

With garbage posts like this, you don’t need to shut up.

Cuz no one with half a brain will be reading your opinion.

We were also talking about doing NYC or Boston.

Also, Kevin and I discussed Canada.

Attention : JJ, Alpha, Mac and the other Canadians out there!

Let’s make it happen.

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

If it’s Montreal or Boston…I’m in for sure. Glad you maniacs had a good trip. BJ looked incredible and I bow to his superior skill. I thought Kenny’s game plan was decent but he shouldn’t have attempted that many takedowns. He’s no wrestler and he tired himself out more than BJ. Penn’s conditioning issues from the past were non-existant…he looks phenomenal at 155. I still love ya Florini! It just wasn’t his night and he just couldn’t mount any momentum in the fight and BJ is just a force at 155.

Bowles has TNT in his hands…he rocked Torres with every shot he landed. I couldn’t believe it seeing Torres on the mat lifeless getting nailed with several defenseless shots. I think Bowles will wear that belt for a while with the performance he put on. I didn’t know a whole lot about him going into the fight but I’m definitely going to watch him from here on out.

by Buster Bluth on Aug 10, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

NYC or Boston and I am in since I won’t need a hotel room. Well, maybe for Boston, but we’ll see.

Hey, OJR, can you please tell us more about this chick fight in the crowd that went on for like 10 minutes? Rogan said 90% of the audience was watching the fight in the crowd rather than Riley/Shane.

Also, did you see more fights in the octagon or the crowd?

by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

That would be awesome.

I love NYC. Been there about 5 times.

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I haven’t yet, always wanted to go, combined with a UFC trip it would be awesome. Be great to meet some maniacs too.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Great weekend of fights the two main ufc fights were good, the whole wec card was awsome and Bowles knocking out torres was the icying on the cake :)

by Tower on Aug 10, 2009 10:23 AM EDT reply actions

Wow. Alot of Torres hate going on.

What did he do?

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

He got ktfo. No reason to hate, he just got clipped.

by DSmith on Aug 10, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not hating you just don’t see someone as good as torres get beat like that and it’s good once in a while to see an upset you know?

by Tower on Aug 10, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the link DSmith!! That was some brutal ground and pound!!

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree the Amir stoppage was justified. At first I was on noooo! but Amir was Ko on all fours and doing absolutley nothing to defend himself, he only tried to get up after the ref stepped in.

Agreed it was justified (sorry Kobajack) lol

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Where’s Kobajack?

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a BJ Penn fan as matter of fact, I picked KFlo in this fight & felt BJ has been acting like a teenage girl.

That being said he impressed me, from beginning to end. His striking was crisp and he was at ease and very confident. KFlo looked out of place from the opening bell. Which leads me to my question.

What the hell is Couture & Bonnar thinking saying KFlo won the 1st & 3rd rounds? Are they on crack or just stupid? They weren’t the only ones apparently (watch the ESPN video)

by kibbled_bits on Aug 10, 2009 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

My only guess is that Ken held up BJ against the fence and utilized “octagon control.”

Other than that, I would think they were trying to sell the fight and make it seem more competitive than what it really was.

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

leaning up against someone shouldn’t count for anything, unless it leads to a takedown. just because you can push someone against the fence doesn’t mean you are winning the fight. otherwise, nfl linemen would rule mma. kenny was afraid of BJ’s standup so he tried to tire him out, but it didn’t work. he did not win a single round and did not appear to be ‘controlling’ the fight. something tells me diego will suffer a similar fate.

by spitforce on Aug 10, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree…leaning on someone against the fence may not be a crowd pleasing tactic, but when one guy is pinning another against the fence and the other guy can’t get anything accomplished means that he has octagon control…which puts him ahead in scoring. It’s a ten point must system…if all 5 minutes of the round consisted of one guy pinning someone against the fence and the other guy couldn’t get out of the clinch…who do you give 10 points to? Can’t be the guy getting controlled IMO.

Like I said, it’s boring as hell, but it is octagon control. One reason I think cages suck…but that’s another debate.

by introvert on Aug 10, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy loves holding people against the cage. He seen someone else do it, so he gave him the rounds.

As for Bonnar, well, he just lost to Coleman so, yeah, he’s just stupid.

by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

@Jesse LOL, Coleman looked ancient, okay I have a new nickname for Coleman: Golem

by kibbled_bits on Aug 10, 2009 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

philly card stunk like i thought it would besides two big events
i enjoyed the wec card, i knew torres was gonna lose, now maybe that faber vs torres fight might just happen now!!!!!!!!!

by bryant on Aug 10, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

Question for the one’s who saw it live. On the PPV, they had a bonue fight before the Silva/Forrest fight. Was this put in place to allow the fans there to have a bathroom/beer break? Was the fight live or was it a replay from earlier? I know when they need to kill a couple of minutes they usually replay a quick prelim match, but this bonus match was three rounds, had intro’s, pre-hype, and was offered as a bonus fight. We just found it weird that they would play this right before the Forrest fight.

Also, how many fights were in the stands? Rogan made a comment a couple times.

REPOST from another thread.

Some chicks were getting it on during the course of the Shane/Riley fight.

A blond woman was fighting someone but the scrum was confusing so I could not make out the other person.

She got kicked out before the Griffin-Silva fight and was high fiving people on the way out!

What’s funny is that she was getting more attention and applause than either Shane or Riley!

Philly fans are unreal!

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Mark Coleman came into the stands and raised the blond woman’s hand after the fight.

by BEZ on Aug 10, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Hahaha!

I am sorry I missed that!

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I did get a picture of the winner and Coleman as he is letting her hand down.

101 was one of the worst events in a looong time.

And Murgliotta needs to go away, preferably into a hole in the desert.

by Lester The Pimp on Aug 10, 2009 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

Solid undercard (not spectacular) and 2 great finishes for the co-main events.

Huh?

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Try watching a british card Lester, then you’ll know the meaning of “worst events in a looong time”.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

K-dog,

Why is that?

Do you think that will change with all of the young talent from TUF?

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

No! I didn’t think they were particularly talented and it was the worst USA team in living memory. The sport is in its infancy here and it seems that the UFC are trying to manufacure British hero’s to make out the sport’s exploding here or something, which it isn’t. We’re at least 5 to 10 years behind you guys and filling up British cards with UK cans isn’t helping develop the sport. More people would get interested quicker if they brought over some big global stars!
I predict every fight on 105 will feature a British fighter and there just isn’t the depth of talent to justify that.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I feel sorry for you guys. You get some of the sh!ttiest fight cards ever, I mean they are so bad they give them to us free…

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear their talking about Wandy and Coleman fighting (NOT EACH OTHER) @ UFC105.

by MoonUK on Aug 10, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t mind seeing Wand live, seen Coleman twice before but never in Britain so he’d be good too. Not sure either of those two are gonna persuade me to part with my hard earned though.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully Wandi will be at 105 though I thought that he was going to take more time off and I’m not a Coleman or Tito fan but if that fight happens in Manchester then I’ll be happy.

And Lester and Intro are being far too critical of 101, like dog said it beats anything that the UK has to offer (BAMMA and UC:UK are laughably bad) and I enjoyed the main events as well as George-George, plus Pellegrino-Neer was an interesting grappling match. You two are far too critical of the UFC.

by David W-S on Aug 10, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

101 was terrible, sans Silva’s tooling of Forrest, and about 1 minute of the Penn/Florian fight.

Glad Torres got ko’d…he’s too cocky for his own good…he needed an ass-whooping.

Silva wants to fight RJJ and knows that he can never do that as long as he’s the MW champ, and the UFC has the “champions clause” in their contracts. That’s why he wants to vacate. He will vacate the title and won’t fight Machida, then the UFC will offer him the fight with Machida (or whoever has the LHW belt at the time)….basically force him into fighting for the title or don’t fight at all…it’s gonna get ugly. Silva is posturing for a move out of the UFC to get his dream fight with Roy, and the UFC will keep two steps ahead of him.
