Miguel Torres: 'No excuses' for knockout loss to Brian Bowles at WEC 42

Props: Yahoo!Sports.com

Quoteworthy:

"I was on top a long time and it’s hard to keep pushing.... No excuses. Brian is going to be a good champion, but he’ll see that the responsibilities that go along with being the champion are not easy.... He throws a lot of heat. He has a lot of power in those hands."

Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres talks about his stunning first round knockout loss to Brian Bowles at WEC 42 last night at "The Joint" from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a major upset. Torres -- widely regarded as among the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport -- had not lost since 2003. He was on an amazing 17-fight win streak, which came to a crashing end last night courtesy of several unanswered bombs from the new undefeated champion. Will Torres pick himself off the canvas and exact revenge or does the Athens, Ga., native have his number? Let's hear it, Maniacs ...

I think torres just got too aggresive thot he had him went in too fast then got caught. Should be interesting to see if this effects him going on from here, hope he doesn’t change his style too much. Well done to bb though!!

by eagzy on Aug 10, 2009 7:26 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah I agree with you eagzy, he was way to aggresive in that fight. MMA is all about matchups though and I think this is a bad Matchup for Torres.

was wondering what Torres record really is I read online at a few sites he had 37 wins, but last night they were saying 36?

thanks

Anderson Silva is going to vacate his MW title to remain at light Heavyweight!!!!! Dana White says if it comes to it, He’ll make Silva/Machida fight a reality. DAMN!!!!!!

by getrawbc on Aug 10, 2009 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t Silva say he’d never fight Machida as they’d trained together a lot and were mates? I know Dana also said they were going to force team mates to fight if they had too, but Silva seems like he can be stubborn if he wants.

Plus if he vacates the title is he really going to want to win another as if he holds a belt and his contract renews he’s not going to get round to boxing RJJ anytime soon.

by Gentleman on Aug 10, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I think if those two wanted to fight eachother it would be a horrible fight due to them both being more counter-punchers. If you made them fight when they clearly didn’t want to, I believe they’d stink out the arena with a 5 round dance off and start a riot!

To bring the best out of those two you need a lumbering oaf to be constantly lurching forward at them to give them a target, a role beautifully fulfilled by token sacrificial lamb Forrest Dump last night. If they both fought eachother neither man would be willing to play the Forrest role and it would have the potential to be a horrible stalemate.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know dog, it all depends on how motivated Andy and Lyoto are but I think that it has the potential to be an outstanding fight. Right now nobody can touch either of them and the only competetive fight for them both at this point is to face each other. Machida-Evans was expected by some to be boring because both are counterpunchers but that turned out to be an exciting beatdown. Then again, I’m never bored by Anderson Silva fights, even the Cote and Leites ones were entertaining because of Silva showing them both up for their lack of talent and negative tactics.

Hopefully Andy will move up to LHW full-time so he can finish his career in MMA with superfights instead of beating the same MWs. This would also give Maia his opportunity at the belt if he beats Nate.

lol who was saying they put their whole roll on torres?

by brendan(formerly a bunch of names that no one cares about) on Aug 10, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I gotta disagree with you dave, can’t see those two putting on anything remotely entertaining. There’d be so much prancing, showboating, ducking, feinting, bobbing and weaving going on, it’d be more akin to a performing arts show than an MMA fight.

I agree with your last paragraph though, that makes sense.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

“it’d be more akin to a performing arts show than an MMA fight.”

LMAO!

by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing wrong with performing arts. Seriously mate Anderson Silva has been my favourite fighter since I started watching the UFC just as he destroyed Leben so I’m never going to criticise him and Machida is another of my favourites so no matter what happens I get to see two of my favourite fighters in the main event and find out which one is the best. I’d be the last person on this site to criticise their fight so I’m not going to call it boring before it happens. Chances are it won’t anyway.

by David W-S on Aug 10, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I seriously doubt the truth in any of that. Countless reasons why the fight would never happen.

Poor Miguel. He had a long run and finally someone clipped him. For almost everyone it’s a matter of time. That’s MMA, mistakes cost you the game. It’s not like you can strike out 3 times and then hit a homer on your 4th attempt to be the hero. You make a mistake, it’s over.

Miguel is going to come back strong. I’m sure he’ll learn from the experience and be back.

I would like to hear if OJR still wants Torres moving up to the 155 in the ufc.

by Big Zino on Aug 10, 2009 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Got to hand it Bowles. He came ready and executed. Torres is a monster and will be back strong. Now I really look for him to tighten up his boxing and really work on his defense. I know is cliche, but I really do think this loss will motivate Torres and help him improve.

Again, congrats to Bowles.

by Cole on Aug 10, 2009 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

The Miguel Torres era has ended, and the Brian Bowles Movement has begun.

Bowles has always looked impressive in his WEC fights and last night was no exception. I hope we don’t hear anyone claim “lucky punch” because he clearly dropped Torres in the first minute of the fight as well (haven’t read comments yet). Plus, he left Torres Bisping’d on the canvas.

by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

LOL @ Bowles Movement.

by PW on Aug 10, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Torres will have to change up his game because he can’t bang with Bowles. If goes back in and tries to again the same thing will happen. Also, Dominic Cruz looked great too..Torres better get his mind right.

by knowone on Aug 10, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

VM, you are right, it had nothing to do with getting “clipped”, “caught”, “lucky punches” or anything else like that. I think overconfidence played a big part here but as a Torres fan I was nervous coming into this fight for a few reasons. Torres seemed to be convinced his chin was untouchable and those guys inevitably get rocked. Bowles hits real hard is fast and strong and has skills everywhere. I still believe that Torres is a better fighter and wins a rematch but he has always fought the way most of us wish Anderson would fight. He knows his skills are way above most guys and pushes forward and attacks constantly. He throws long combos and leaves openings for counters because he tries to put on exciting fights and wants to dismantle everyone he fights and as he said in an interview “wants to define himself to that person” and make a real impression on his opponents life. I think he gets a rematch relatively quickly, keeps his defense tighter and wins via sub(triangle). Bowles is no joke and will be around for quite awhile. These two will run the division. I also like Curran at that weight(he got robbed).

Please stop with the move up in weight thing now. I wanted it before too but we have seen him get touched up now and with the strength disadvantage he would face and his weakest part of his game being wrestling and the fact that his chin is not impervious, it’s a bad idea against guys like MTB Faber and Aldo. Nevermind 155, that would be a joke. Still love the guy tho, his record speaks for itself.

by Crowls on Aug 10, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

PW and gang, I got the ol’ VM TM on “The Bowles Movement”. Thought of it last night as I laid in bed in shock and couldn’t wait to share with my maniacs!!!

by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I made the mistake of not giving Brown the respect he deserved for KO’g Faber and it took his mauling of Garcia for me to realise that he was that good, so I’m not going to make any excuses for Miguel. Bowles outclassed him, full stop. He rocked him with the first meaningful strike, took him down and made Torres get desperate and try to do a Belfort before perfectly timing his punch and emphatically stopping Torres.

Outstanding performance from Bowles, Miguel will have to considerably improve his defence in striking and wrestling if he is going to win a rematch, Bowles on this form will take some beating.

by David W-S on Aug 10, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Unless they have a falling out, Silva and Machida will never fight they train 2gether and are good friends. Dana can talk all the bs he wants but he won’t be able to make them 2 fight……….

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree, making two reluctant opponents fight eachother could have horrible reprocussions!

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Why piss them off and risk losing them?? Besides who among us would want to fight one our good friends?? Not me. And I doubt that either of them are hurting for money now that they are champions.

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Even if they wanted to fight, their styles are too alike and would make for an absolute 5 round borefest stinker!

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

That is the truth it has all the ingredients for a 5 round snoozer!!

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

No offense, but this is an individual sport, just like golf, Nascar, tennis, and a whole slew of other sports. There is no reason these guys can’t fight each other and remain friends, it’s done all the time. This “team” bs is the beginning of fighters demanding who they fight and when they fight (ala boxing). I have to agree with the UFC on this. If they don’t want to fight their teammates or friends, then don’t be a fighter in an individual sport. Just because you train at the same gym doesn’t mean you cannot compete against your friend.

by slim473 on Aug 10, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

This has been debated many times before. Who would have access to what coach and on what day? Who would corner each fighter come fight night? Which team mates would spar with who? I dont have a problem with team-mates having to fight eachother if it would make for a great fight. Silva vs Machida I believe would be horrible due to their reluctance to fight eachother and their similar styles.

by attakdog on Aug 10, 2009 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I see your point slim and I would just think that if I was in that position I would not want to fight my friend so I can’t blame them for saying no. And yeah k-dog the fight would more than likely produce Zzzzzzs’

by Dragon on Aug 10, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

it would be nothing more than a boring 5 round sparring session…

by jjthesaint on Aug 10, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he will learn from this loss and come back even stronger and revange this loss. Same as GSP.

He’s a very versitale fighter and he should use all his tools (reach, BJJ, kicks etc) and not just go in there and brawl and hope for the best. Even the toughest guys get caught so why risk it?

Come up with a gameplan, stick to it and be careful in there. Rely on that you are the better fighter in there and the finish will come autimatically, maybe not always in the first round in devastating fashion, but it will come.

I was sooooooo pissed at Torres after 1 min. I knew he was gonna get caught fighting like that, but now I really think it was the best thing that could happen to him and his career!
The end of 2009 and 2010 will be Torres year for sure!

by S-man on Aug 10, 2009 7:28 AM EDT reply actions

We have been seeing a REAL lot of Miguel Torres lately. He has been doing a lot of publicity and marketing things. Everyday it seemed like I seen or heard him doing something. From the first pitch at the White Sox game, the traveling, and ALL of the interviews that he had been doing it seemed like he was too busy with all the “extracurricular” activities.

Perhaps he thought that he was finally making it mainstream and everyone (including Frank Mir of course) was telling him that he is the top lb for lb fighter around and his head finally got a little too big. He has been sounding a bit overconfident as of late.

Torres doesn’t even really come to fight with a gameplan. He comes out to brawl or beat his opponent at what ever he is best at. Plus, once he gets hit hard, he gets very angry. THis all led to disaster against one of the hardest, if not the hardest, puncher at 135.

by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Coulden’t agree wit u more brother. I know Miguel got caught and maybe Bowles is not a great match up for him. Hell he even probably hits harder than Torres but that don’t mean that Bowles is the better fighter. Its called Mixed Martial Arts not “who hits harder”,and Miguel hits pretty hard himself. Besides Torres got the better BJJ, more experience, Muay Thai, submissions and Ground & Pound, throws, crazy kicks, elbows, etc. Torres is extremly well rounded and versitale but however Bowles has demostrated to be a crusher in that weight. I believe that if Torres learns from his mistake and from the first fight and if he comes up with a good game plan and uses his skills well I have no doubt he will retain his belt the next time around but it defenitly wont be easy. Torres actualy did land a hard upkick and even had Bowles in trouble before he chased him and left himself open when he went for the pummel just before getting caught by that punch. If he can come back strong, confident, (if he doesen’t let that loss to Bowles get in his head, that happens a lot with fighters when they lose to someone especially in that way)well prepared and trains with a good camp like he has, then I think he will do to Bowles what St.Pierre did against Matt Serra in their rematch at UFC 83 and thats finish him and take his belt back. I would love to see Miguel train with someone like St.Pierre they are both great fighters and two of the best pound 4 pound fighters out there. Training with GSP they can exchange techniques with each other and Migul could work his wrestling with Georges and become better than he already is, now that would be scary.

by G-Man on Aug 11, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

yup lots of fighters get knocked out chasing dudes down after it looks like they’re hurt. Scott Smith vs Pete Sell, Kimbo vs Petruzelli, etc. Also Manhoef ktfo iron chinned Mark hunt bum rushing him… then got knocked out by a backpedaling Maeda in K-1 doing the same

by quidnunc on Aug 10, 2009 7:31 AM EDT reply actions

The best example of that was Chris leben ko’ing…I think it was Martin, pretty damm sure actually, he kept mouthin off then even gave the come @ me hand signal and bang! Ktfo! Same with another hilarious and killer ko was Spencer fishers knee after buddy waved his finger in the air saying nuh uh, I’m fine, then bang! Ktfo! Ha ha

by Daniel worby on Aug 10, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m glad this happened to Torres! I took a lot of flack b4 this fight for saying he was getting much too cocky. I immediately feared for his over confidence the moment he said “I’m not even going to throw a jab the whole 1st round”. Ya just don’t do/say that. Asked for it. Good. Over looked a 9-0 record and now the guy is in double digits.

As for spider and machida? Never fight. No need to. Anderson says he’s fine w/pickin off all the other 205’ers they throw @ him while defending his title. He’ll be more the allowed to do so.

And finally Forrest was rumored to have lost hearing went to the hospital and found out of dislocated jaw, so I would be disappointed if that was all a made up lie from his camp who said that.

ye props to brian bowles….rocked torres earlier before he TKO’d him. The fans love watching torres because he’s not afraid to get hit and brawl…but he hasn’t fought anybody with power in his hands like bb. He just needs to tighten up his boxing defence and he’ll be fine… I had some serious deja-vu, this fight was reminiscent of the shock of faber-brown I.

I dunno, I don’t think Forest’s washed up now, he looked like he was just totally unprepared for Silvas level of skill. Didn’t have any answers to the questions being asked. I think Silva wanted to put on a show after his last 2 fights and Forest wanted to try take him out of his comfort zone after watching Silvas last 2 fights. When the fight didn’t materialize the way he’d planned for, Forest waded forward trying to be aggressive and on the front foot, Silva goaded him with his hands down and Forest just wasn’t prepared for that level of counter striking. He was in the middle of throwing a punch when he got KO’d, didn’t see it coming and when you don’t see a punch coming you get hurt, caught him bang on the chin too.
I still rate Forest and I can’t think of many UFC fighters who could’ve lived with Silva that night, I can’t believe his reflexes, he was dodging punches like he was from the Matrix. Sick.

Miguels vulnerability came to the forefront when he fought Mizugaki. He was clipped several times by him and he showed he had a hard time dealing with a hard puncher such as Mizugaki.

by Primo on Aug 10, 2009 12:37 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know how Torres has ever been considered one of the best P4P fighters. Just because he fought all kinds of bums and never lost by a KO before is not reason enough to make him one of the best. He always takes serious relentless beatings, but somehow survives. Is that enough to be called the BEST? His wrestling skills are very poor. His strikes are more like whips (quick but no power – look at his scrawny arms). He uses his height and flexibility to implement jiujitsu submissions againts shorter opponents – big deal. On top of that, he is super arrogant and likes to run his mouth before fights. Is that a champion’s quality? He is just lucky he does not have people of Mike Brown or Jose Aldo’s caliber in his division.

by Octavio, FL on Aug 10, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

See this is exactly why I never considered Torres an elite fighter nor a pound-for-pound contender. He fights at 135 lbs in the WEC. Who the heck has he beaten? I mean great 17 wins in a row but it ain’t that hard when you’re fighting a bunch of nobodies who don’t know their right hand from their butt crack.

He fights one guy with some decent power in his hands and he’s done. I mean Bowles had all of seven fights in his career, no ground game or real stand up to speak of, and yet he pulls off the win. If Torres is so good how could any of that happen? Obviously there is something amiss with how many people have been judging Torres.

by Anthony on Aug 10, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

I am glad Torres finally lost. We need to see some movement in that division. There are a lot of young fighters worthy of that title. As you can see someone was very hungry last night. I would like to see him move up in weight. He talks alot of junk about how he trains against fighters twice his weight, well lets just see and back it up!

by Miguel on Aug 10, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

i think torres just needs to calm his nerves after being in the spotlight for the past two years after beating beebe. obviously from his statements, the spotlight threw him for a loop. he’s vicious but seemed distracted. hopefully training with less pressure will help him, but as some of the comments stated, there’s some quickly rising talents that he needs to be better than.

So OK – Bowles, a little tank engine, went in there and clocked the popular long-standing champ. Sounds familiar. I can’t say he didn’t earn it… But now the WEC has seen its second crowd-pleasing title-holder go down to an inanely boring challenger who got in the ring and threw bricks. Sure, they were legit wins for Brown and Bowles, but the outlook? Yawn. It’ll be just like after Brian Stann lost the now-defunct light heavyweight title to, uh, ya know, that guy…
