Dana White: Diego Sanchez vs BJ Penn 'is a great fight'

"The great thing about the 155-pound division is how stacked it is. And I think Diego Sanchez is probably next in line for a title shot against B.J. It's a great fight."
UFC President Dana White reaffirms his plan during the UFC 101 post-fight press conference to bring surging lightweight Diego Sanchez into a championship bout against current 155-pound kingpin BJ Penn later this year or perhaps early 2010. "Nightmare" earned his shot after dropping to lightweight and outpointing Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida, effectively vaulting himself to the top of the number one contender list -- which may have also been helped by his 8-2 record in the welterweight division. He'll have his toughest test to date against "The Prodigy," who submitted Kenny Florian at UFC 101 on August 8 to solidify himself as the best lightweight in the UFC -- and perhaps the world.

War time. Let’s see what Diego’s motor can really put up with.
by Sir Chokemout on Aug 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions
Diego will be tougher than Kenny.
Kenny had no threats ever. Diego has better takedowns (not where you want to take Penn in the 155 division), but also he has KO power which Kenny lacked.
Diego has some good kicks too.
BJ by domination again.

OFFICIAL 1ST ANUAL MMAMANIA.COM UFC TRIP THREAD HIJACK!’
WOW, what a greta time, so much so I don’t know where to begin. Cross country flights suck, but this was the quickest and easiest one ever, I was going to an mma event and not to visit relatives I could care less in seeing. First thing I did was go to see the liberty bell and took a few pictures. 3 of us (OJR, Nick (John’s friend) and myself) enjoyed a nice steak dinner and walked around south street. I have no picture, but at one point I swear I saw Jesse Holland, there wa a 6’5 black tranny in a skirt with his junk hanging out, so if that was you Jesse, sorry I didn’t say Hi, I was scared!
The suite itself was amazing! Those of you who didn’t want to go because the suites are to high up, you lost out. They did have the nose bleed suites, but these were lower level as advertised and looked directly over the cage. Food was decent, nothing great, but the atmosphere was amazing, and the regular maniacs that were there were a great group of guys.
The night of fights, to be 100% honest was prety lackluster or boring until the 2 main events, but they more than made up for it! I think me vs. Nostradumbass was me winning by KO, damn, I picked every upset right. Sakaralooked like he might have had a nagging injury, and Leites should be cut by noon today! Hendricks wasn’t a bad stop until you see it after the fact in slow motion! The ref only sees 5 or 6 unanswered punches with no attempt in protecting himself. In all honesty, the 2 chicks fighting in the crowd was the high light up until Forrest entered the cage.
Thje crowd erupted for Forrest (I didn’t, not a fan) and I think me and OJR were the only 2 people in the crowd standing and clapping when Silva entered the arena. All I can say is wow! He had Forrest timed before he threw a punch or a kick, and dropped him 3 times with the shortest punches I’ve ever seen! He is in no doubt the best p4p in the world. All you guys that wanted to see GSP/silva, that just went down the drain, silva just beat not only a big LHW, but destroyed him, he’d make GSP look even more foolish. Don’t try to debate me on this, anyone with a pea for a brain can see that it’s true!
BJ got a roar of an ovation which surprised me with the event being so close to boston. Kenny, as I said, had nothing for him. Pushing and leaning on BJ against the cage was basically it, and when BJ decided to take it to the ground, it went there and hard!
It was funny, before the Silva fight, some of the maniacs were debating KO/SUB of the night. I looked and said
“Silva will get KO of night and BJ will get RNC for sub of night.” Man I’m good!
Overall, great time, I parlayed Silva and BJ for 500 whiich paid out 450, I put 100 on sakara as a dog and 100 on Hendricks. overall, I net about 1200 for this event. this new link should work for pictures, let me know! In closing, no one will beat BJ at 55, not even Diego, he’s too stupid (and I’m a big fan), he’ll come out toe to toe and be KO’d in the 1st…you heard it here first!
until next time maniacs!

He kinda reminded me of Matt Serra when he corners. This is going to be a great fight. It would be a real war, Diego’s not going to be as tentative as Kenny. BJ ftw.

BJ will win again.
Kenny’s brother is annoying.
Plus BJ even said when he is screaming “2! 2!” Then BJ knows what is coming. Isn’t part of training KNOWING what to do in the fight without a person holding your hand mentally every second of the fight.

Sarah, I too noticed Keith Florian, who seemed to be the star of the show according to Rogan and Goldy. I mean, if I heard one more cheesy fact about Keith Florian, I was about to hit mute on the tv.
He REALLY sounds like an obese woman when he screams. I thought they grabbed a random fan from a gils softball game and stuck her in Kenny and Pellegrino’s corner. Either that, or it sounded exactly like Dwight Howard’s impressions of Stan Van Gundy.
by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Kenny proved to be a joke that cant win the big fight!
He got his title shot avoiding all the top wrestlers…there is no one left for him to fight except top wrestlers now, so dont expect another winning streak out of kenny!
Kenny “cant win the big one” florian!…I finish fight! hahaha
Diego will be a much tougher test the Cock-blow Florian! Diego will actually be competitive against BJ and he would smash Kenny! This will be the best lightweight title fight since the UFC reintroduced the division….But I wont ever pick against BJ penn when he fights in the lightweight division. In my eyes, he is unstoppae untll someone proves otherwise!

Kenny, where did you learn that awesome gameplan? from the dry humping against the cage school of Tim Sylvia….
Great strategy, who would have known that you can finish fights by humping your opponent against the fence!

whats funnier is that BJ said he knew what Kenny was going to do because his corner kept yelling it…
by McArthur on Aug 10, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn’t think Kenny’s game plan was all that bad. BJ has had a questionable gas tank for most of his career albeit most of that came when he was a WW. He tried to tire BJ out but props to BJ…he came in with a full tank and didn’e exert himself. I give mad props to BJ for his performance…he looked great from start to finish. Kenny just never mounted any momentum and he really shouldn’t have gone for the takedown so much. I think Kenny has tremendous skills and he’s come a long way and I hope we see him in great fights from here on out. Kenny just didn’t really have much for a plan ‘B’ coming into this fight and it showed. Kenny is a top 3 LW in the UFC and I still want to see him rematch Diego.
Sanchez couldn’t even take out Stevenson in a pure boxing match so I don’t see how he’s going to beat BJ other than GnP. I think Diego has lost a little power coming down in weight but his speed is up. It should be a solid fight but I don’t see Diego really posing a lot of problems. I don’t care for either Penn or Sanchez cause they are both full of themselves and dillusional.
by Buster Bluth on Aug 10, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Geez John, way to kick kenny whens he’s down. Have you always disliked Kenny that bad?
by Synyster on Aug 10, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions
John G, I honestly think that his gameplan was the best he could of had. He doesn’t have the talent or the skills BJ has & there was NO WAY IN HELL that Kenny could win that fight. He tried to wear BJ down but Marv has been doin something right with Pudge boy. I have never seen BJ so fit. A definite force to be reckoned with.
by neeko on Aug 10, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions
John, you really like to tear into beaten opponents.
Here’s a positive for Kenny. His chin took some shots and he kept ticking.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Aug 10, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions
BJ Vs Diego is definitely a better fight. I think Diego can beat BJ by maintaining a crazy pace for five rounds. BJ doesn’t have to gas to be overwhelmed mentally. However, it’s a double-edged sword because if Diego swings wildly, he could taste his first KO. I don’t think Diego has the same power at LW, but I suppose he still has the same chin. I’m excited for it.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Aug 10, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Kevin, trip sounded awesome if I wasn’t a poor 19 year old British student then I’d have gone, as it is I can barely afford the cheap tickets for 105. I can’t believe that anyone bailed on the trip, their loss I guess. Good to hear that some people were cheering for Andy (not including those Philly bandwagon jumpers at the end).
BJ-Diego is a sick fight and right now the most marketable LW fight in the UFC. Diego hasn’t stopped Joe or Clay but he outclassed both of them and is a real threat to BJ’s title. Both guys are insane and really fun to watch fight, so the hype should be better than BJ-Kenny (I like Kenny but there’s only so much “I want BJ’s belt” quotes that I can take) and the fight will hopefully be more competetive, as long as Diego fights smart and plays to his strengths instead of BJ’s weaknesses, which is what ultimately cost Kenny the fight.
I actually like Keith and I think that both Florian brothers are classy and intelligent guys, but this was one time where yelling instructions all of the way through backfired. If only the Florians could speak a different language then BJ wouldn’t have understood what they were saying so Keith could shout as much as he wanted.
by David W-S on Aug 10, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions
They are supposedly of Hispanic background.
Speaking Spanish would have worked!
by OJR on Aug 10, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions
kenny 100% speaks spanish, so I’m starting to question the intelligence of the Florian Brothers. If you don’t believe me, go back and listen to one of the pre fight pressers, he gets asked a question and answers in spanish!
by kevin on Aug 10, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha I never knew that, man that is ridiculous I take back the part about the Florian Bros being intelligent. They could have easily used the language barrier to their advantage instead Keith gave away the gameplan to BJ.
by David W-S on Aug 10, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions
That was a fairly ridiculous game plan, no one at 155lbs can take BJ down. Florian should have went for the shot (like he did) then moved up to the clinch to work elbows, short punches n’ knees. By the time Florian went to the clinch he was tired from all the unsuccessful takedown effort and BJ scored more in hammer fists, Knees, elbows n’ short punches. Florian ended up exhausting himself with that gameplan which led to his demise on the ground.
by DAVE A on Aug 10, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I learned my lesson. BJ/Diego will go just about the same as the kenny fight. I think the only difference will be Diego’s aggression and his new love of striking will be his downfall. In the end, I see BJ completely cutting Diego up on the feet a la sherk style.
by Cole on Aug 10, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
This time IT WILL HAPPEN, the student(DIEGO) will kill the MASTER
by TaPouT on Aug 10, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions
What people fail to realize, is why did Kenny fail? Bad gameplan for sure is one reason, but two is he isnt a very big LW. BJ was bigger then he was. Diego is more talented on the ground then Flo, is bigger, just as fast if not fast, hits harder, and has a rock hard chin and very good cardio.
I dont see BJ subbing Diego or vice versa, so its going to come down to aggression. How would BJ handle the swarm ala Guida? While BJ would survive it, but it could make BJ tentative. In a tight match, the aggressor tends to get the points.
by Big D on Aug 11, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. But I don’t see the fight going that much different than the one with Florian.
by Adam T. on Aug 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions
I do, Diego is way stronger and a way better athlete than Kenny! he’s gonna put constant pressure on BJ and there’s noway that BJ can keep up with that, and it’s impossible to finish Diego!
by RoBerto on Aug 10, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
The scrambles in the Diego/Penn fight will be off the hook. Unless Diego has staff, he always pushes the pace. Diego’s biggest problem is that BJ’s boxing is waaay better than Diego. But then again, BJ’s BJJ is better, and I would even go as far as saying his wrestling his better as well.
I don’t care what Tony Robbins is whispering into Diego’s ear, but next fight he will be coming to the octagon screaming/chanting/cheering/first pumps/etc “YES” but on the way out, he will be crying “NO…”
by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Horse shit.BJs boxing is very good no doubt but not impossible to hang with if you mix a lil bit of feints and takedown attempts in.Just keep him guessing and dont turn the fight into a pure boxing match like sherk did.Difference is Diegos gona throw a lil bit more kicks in the mix to keep Penn guessing.I think that Despite his last 2 performances at lightweight Diegos cardio is gonna come in better than Penns becuz he has so much time to really do practice cuts this year to get his body use to the weight cut.Diegos stronger and heavier alot of people count him out but i think that the Diego that weve seen in the past would give penn hell.Nd the Diego that we see come fight night will truly be a new more evolved nightmare.

Part of the problem with Diego not fighting “World Class P4P fighters” is that only a handful exist. Of the ones that he could face, it’s either BJ or GSP. BJ hasn’t beaten any world class P4P fighters either.

Jens Pulver is a better puncher than Diego and couldn’t finish BJ. Diego’s best chance is to catch BJ with a head kick or flying knee or something crazy like that. I think BJ takes a 5 round dominating decision. I think this fight is like GSP-Fitch, in that BJ is slightly better than Diego everywhere, but will have a hard time finishing.

by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions
No he didn’t. Pulver has been on the downside of his career since before he coached TUF and he’s a true 145er. BJ is much bigger than Jens, but not Diego. I agree he probably had more power than Diego in his hay day, but today I’d give Sanchez a bit of an edge in striking and power because Pulver has really showed his age in his past 3-4 fights. That said, I still think BJ takes it.

Jens Pulver had good hands at one time, when the LW division was weak and curled into the fetal position. He can’t even beat leonard Garcia(who got an undeserved win last night). I agree Penn should be the favorite, but Sanchez will not lean against him for 3 rounds, and he is most certaintly a better striker than K-Flo. His stand-up actually reminds me a lot of BJ’s although he has more versatile kicks. Penn & Sanchez both have some wicked flying knees!! Diego is my favorite fighter, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him lose to BJ.

by spitforce on Aug 10, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly OJR, Diego is waaay more well known, more exciting, and much more known which leads to more ticket and PPV sales.
Maynard has beaten nobody in the LW division except for Frankie Edgar (who he just layed on). So some would think that he should be ranked above Frankie. HOWEVER, Frankie has beaten some of the best in the LW division – Sherk, Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca and Spencer Fisher. For some reason, everone always remembers Edgar getting dwarfed by Gray. This will keep him away from a title shot in the very near future. Tyson Griffin lost to Sherk too recently to be under consideration for a title shot.
by ViolentMike on Aug 10, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Diego’s two losses were a questionable split decision hump-fest to Fitch and a staph-induced decision loss to Kos. As for Griffin and Maynard, well, Maynard has had his last four fights go to decision, last seven for Griffin. They’re both boring dry-humpers who have no business being in the cage with BJ.
by PW on Aug 10, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Don’t you want to know if BJ is good enough to neutralize the dry hump. I think he is, but I need to see it to believe it. Just fight more often and everybody can get their shot.

Neutralizing the dry hump will not even be an issue because there isn’t a lightweight fighter in the world than can take BJ down. If I remember correctly even GSP didn’t get a takedown until the second round and we all know about his resume.

Interesting point, about other guys deserving it more. I just think Diego has been in the game longer. He has a really good record still. Showed that he can cut the weight and still be a nightmare against a really tough Clay Guida, and Joe Stevenson. You also have to look at who the other guys have faced. And Diego Sanchez is the only TUF 1 and TUF 2 winners that have not got a title shot yet. Kenny lost and he’s already had 2.
As far at the match up. BJ looked great, but I think Diego will put it on him. His takedowns will make the difference.
by Crivas on Aug 10, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions
I dont think BJ can handle diego’s pace. You are underestimating Diego. That kid can go. I say he beats Penn but it will be close. He will grind Penn out. Unlike Florian he wont be scared to engage and take a few shots. Regardless of what you think of Diego as a person he is a beast.
by Chimmy on Aug 10, 2009 12:06 PM EDT reply actions
I love Diego, but his pace will be his own worst enemy. He’s not going to overwhelm Penn on the feet and has little chance of taking him down. If Diego tries to get aggressive, he might end up seeing stars.
Diego has a few nice HL KOs, but he doesn’t have a ton of knockout power. Couple that with the fact that BJ’s chin is the best in the division. At 155 there’s just not much that guys have to offer to beat BJ with. He’s too good in every area.
by ballhawkdawk on Aug 10, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
BJs chin is the best in the business but he even admitted to getting knocked out for a split second in GSP vs BJ 2.Come On.Diego has gotten hit with solid hard shots buy some hard hitting mother friker like Kos,Luigi,Joe daddy,Karo,Diaz and barely blinked.Nobody has a harder chin at lightweight than that guy.If its any1 who can take penns shots at lightweight is Diego.I think Penns aggresivness on the feet could actually work against him if people would actually get in there and mix it up a lil.Diegos never been evn close to being caught in a submission or even knocked out,and hes kicked practicly ere 1s assets that he went against.Toughest guy contender at LW handsdown. No argument

What do you mean he hasn’t earned it. He’s only lost to two opponents, KOS-shouldn’t have fought because of Staph and Fitch-razor close split decision. Diego has yet to be finished on the ground or standing. Plus remember his pace is much more frantic than Kenny’s. I see diego taking the win by decision or late tko/submission.
by PACO on Aug 10, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions
That frantic pace will just get his ass finished quicker. Nobody in the lightweight division can take BJ Penn down. He may have the best chin, lb for lb, of any mma fighter in the world. Diego can and will be finished.

Has Diego ever faced a world class fighter like Bj Penn? NO.
Bj’s been in there with the best of uhm and Diego should be no problem for him.
Diego is stupidly aggresive and he couldnt finish Joe stevenson or Clay Guida. And now he’s gonna finish THE PRODIGY?! Not likely.
Bj wins this fight within 3 rounds.
by *PrettyBoy* on Aug 10, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh yeah, I see Diego blazing out of the gate. A lot of wild punches and standing toe to toe with Bj. Then Bj getting in a combination and knocking Diego out.
Very hard to see Diego winning this one. He couldn’t finish Joe Daddy & and Guida. Joe Daddy seemed unfazed by Diegos punches and this was the same Joe Daddy that got knocked down by a Bj right hook 30 seconds into their fight. I think Diego would have more of a shot if this fight were at 170, but at 155 this goes to Bj.

Im sure this will be a better fight than Penn/Kenflo!!! What the hell was kenny doing in that fight, he did absolutely nothing!!!!!! Diego should be a little more intense and offensive in the bout!!!!
by Spyder on Aug 10, 2009 12:16 PM EDT reply actions
Kenny realized early on that he didn’t have anything to really beat BJ down with, so he tried to either stay at a safe range or just push BJ against the fence.
A lot of people saying “BJ will get worn down!” .. this kind of shit gets old. 185 lb GSP wore him down.. Diego is not GSP.

The question is, is this fight really going to happen? Dana doesn’t sound that convinced, plus, I thought they were going to have Diego go into the Octagon and challenge the winner there face2face?!?

I’m so jacked up for this fight!!! I acknowledge that BJ is the best 155er in the world, but I’m a huge Diego fan, so i can’t really give an objective prediction for this fight. Fuck it, Sanchez is gonna kick his ass!!!! I just won’t be that surprised if he doesn’t. Diego will strike with him, and we’ll find out just how good Diego’s stand up really is. The longer the fight goes, the more it’s in Diego’s favor. Either Diego wins this fight by split/unanimous decision, or BJ knocks him out in the 1st or 2nd round. Considering Diego has never once even had his bell wrung, this is easier said than done.
A question i have for you maniacs……i’m actually considering going to this fight, regardless of where it’s held. Can anyone tell me if it’s even possible to get the seats that are real close to the ring, and if so how much they cost? I always see other fighters, and hollywood brats are sitting in those seats, just wondering if the common man with a shitload of cash can get a ticket in that section??

Im not calling a winner yet. But Diego will give BJ all he can handle. He will not be finished and this fight will go the distance. I can see Diego taking the strap.

I thought Kflo would of at least brought BJ down once or twice but the mother F@cker is tough to bring down and I was realy impressed with his ability to stop anything Kflo had. Diego is a better striker than Kflo and maybe a little stronger but after the fight against Kflo I can’t see BJ losing to anyone at 155 and believe Kflo can beat diego now? Maybe Maynard or Edgar after Diego?
by Puck Head on Aug 10, 2009 2:06 PM EDT reply actions
If Bj beats Diego there is nobody else at 155 that could really put Bj in any trouble.
Maynard.. Edgar? Bj spanks them both easily.
by *PrettyBoy* on Aug 10, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
BJ has great boxing, we all know that, and good knees to (notice how he almost Sherked Kenny at the end of round 1) but in his fight with Diego I really want to see some epic groundwork.
Once BJ got Kenny down the clock was ticking. His control on the ground is unbelievable. But Diego is probably the one guy at LW who can put up a fight there. He won’t win, but he will make it exciting. Remember his ground war with Nick Diaz. Incredible non-stops transitions.
Diego has improved his stand-up and can be explosive there. Too bad for him BJ has one of the best chins ever, but at least there could be some fireworks. Kenny had nothing once he tasted BJ’s power early.
I don’t think there’s any question that Diego is the most exciting match-up for BJ at LW. If Diego want to try to tire BJ out he will do so by fighting not pushing him up against the cage and leaning on him. I don’t think that was a bad move by Florian, he had very few avenues to victory and one could make the case that he won the second round (I had it for BJ but sure some judges gave it to Kenny). That means that going into the championship rounds, it was 2-1 for BJ. If it went according to Kenny’s plan, BJ would be gassed by then and he could score points and steal the last 2 rounds.
Unfortunately for Florian, BJ was in good shape and you could tell because he was fighting a very measured pace and would explode a little whenever he went for his strikes. When BJ finally took it to the ground, Florian was helpless. Not sure that Kenny expected BJ’s jits to be that superior to his. Wrong. BJ has by far the best jits at LW. By far.
Edgar is the only other guy at LW that I’d like to see BJ fight.

Why would you wanna see Edgar fight Penn? Im really curious to know.
It would be a one-sided beating.
by *PrettyBoy* on Aug 10, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s not that I think it would be an amazing match-up, but just that there aren’t any other guys that I care to see BJ fight, except maybe Sherk again.
Edgar has great boxing (better than Sherk as we saw) and great wrestling. I would like to see how BJ would beat him. I think Edgar would do better than Kenny, even if maybe he wouldn’t last as long. He might actually hit Penn a few times.

Diego is going to kill BJ. Bj did not look impressive against Kenny what so ever he look weak and out of gas. People also say that Diego never faced a world class fighter like Bj are you kidding me he beat Nick Diaz, ko’ed Joe rigs, whent to a split decision with john fintch a guy that whent to a decision with GSP something BJ did not do, and plus he destroyed Karro when he actually was pretty good. So i pick Diego to finish Bj in the second or third.
by DWR on Aug 10, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions
YOU WERE NOT IMPRESSED?!
So what he had Bj pressed up against the fence? Bj was letting him do that. FLORIAN GASSED BEFORE BJ. Once Bj knew this he went for the kill in the 4th.

It’s funny that some people say Bj didn’t look impressive against Kenny. And Kenny got subbed. A brazilian jiu jitsu black belt got subbed. No small feat. And these same people think that Diego looked impressive by out pointing Joe Stevenson (another bjj black belt that got submitted by Bj) and that got a split against Clay Guida.

I’m a huge Sanchez fan and I can’t stand BJ. Having said that, I thought BJ looked amazing in the Florian fight, and he definitely is the best 155er in the world…until proven otherwise. BJ is going to lose he did not look good against Kenny most of the fight Kenny had against the cage .If Kenny pinned him and kept him there think what Diego can do he is ten times stronger than Kenny and he is also is alot faster than him.BJ has great hands but diego has great hands and kicks so I pick Diego by tko or UD.

A few observations on the comments…Jens is a better striker then Diego? That’s a big NO…Diego might feel his first KO…Ummm did you see the Joe Riggs fight…You can hit Diego with the kitchen sink and that kid is not going down. Diego and Kenny have progressed as fighters. Kenny more technical and Diego has improved in all areas becoming a real nightmare. Diego has real KO power…yah yah he didn’t knock out Clay but who has!? Clay doesn’t stop ever and Diego owned him on the feet and on the ground.
I hope Diego gets the win but BJ is crafty and pulls talent out of his butt all the time.
