UFC 101 bonuses and awards for 'Declaration' PPV fights

UFC 101: "Declaration" from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card. And it may come as a shock whose wallets are leaving "The City of Brotherly Love" a little heavier.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded middleweight champion Anderson Silva -- who made the 20-pound jump to light heavyweight -- and former 205-pound champion, Forrest Griffin, with "Fight of the Night."

Rather bizarre, considering how bizarrely it ended, and how UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn and number one contender, Kenny Florian, fought tough for four rounds.

The good new is Penn took home "Submission of the Night" for choking out Florian in the main event of the evening. It was the first-ever such award for "The Prodigy" in his tenure with the promotion.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 101:

Star-divide

Fight of the Night — Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin
Knockout of the Night — Anderson Silva
Submission of the Night -- BJ Penn

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

How can Silva/Griffin be fight of the night. It was a one sided beatdown that only lasted 3 minutes. I get the KO of the night but FON is a joke.

i think bj coulda taken kenny down at anytime, and as soon as he slamed him, he SMASHED him

by JG on Aug 9, 2009 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Dana felt bad for feeding Griffin to Silva.

They wanted to make sure Silva would fight by giving a guy who is aggressive at heart.

Horrible for Griffin, he is the most aggressive AFTER being hurt. Bad trait against a guy like Silva.

did anyone else laugh when they saw the countdown show and sum old guy said bj was gunna get destroyed and kenny was gunna make bj look like a sparring partner…so funny , thats all i could think about during the fight

by JG on Aug 9, 2009 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and i think the amir stopage was a good one……he was down on all fours like a dog and took like 5 punches to the head without even moving his hands to protect himself

Yeah, it is funny when the guys who don’t know MMA start running their mouths.

Who is going to own BJ Penn at 155? People watch the GSP fight and think, “oh, that Penn guy is nothing.”

People don’t understand how strong GSP is.

Forrest dislocated his jaw:

“I heard his jaw was dislocated very early in the fight…then he took several more punches to the jaw. Apparently he can’t hear out of the ear on that side either. He left the octagon because he needed medical attention asap. At first they thought his jaw was broken, then said it was dislocated.”

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 9, 2009 2:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jea jerry that was pissing me off to bj was ranked (by most sites)4 or 3 p4p before the gsp fight than gsp beats him and everyone starts saying bj is not that good and his done I mean come on GSP is way bigger and stronger than him and I dont see why he went down so much on p4p isnt it how good you are im your divison, I mean if gsp got destroyed by Anderson I dont think that should affect his p4p status but then again thats just my opinion

by Nor Cal Mexican (formely Philicutioner) on Aug 9, 2009 4:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed BJ is easily one of the 3 or 4 most skilled P4P fighters out there but GSP just happens to be close to or just as skilled and have an extra 30 lbs of muscle. Just look at Brock Lesnar beating up on far more skilled fighters if you don’t think an extreme strength advantage can make a differnce. They have weight classes for a reason (Okay so A Silva is the exception to this rule but he’s kinda the baddest mofo on the planet).

Amir took some hard uppercuts, but once on his hands and knees, every punch either hit his shoulder or missed entirely. Amir’s the first fighter to lose after being hit with 5 air-punches.

jj,intro, john, odamn! what are your thoughts? think it was FIXED!

by gaara on Aug 9, 2009 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok, so I just watched the Silva fight the third time.

Here are the strikes for those they say Forrest faked it:

Rocked hard with right hook (3:05) DROPPED

Rocked with another right hook (2:58)

Rocked with a solid right hand (2:18) DROPPED

Rocked with a crisp right hand (1:41) DROPPED/GAME OVER

People need to understand that Forrest was hurt pretty bad from those first three solid strikes, the fourth one was like kicking open a vault after you’ve set off 3 sets of TNT. It pops easy at the end.

90 seconds and 4 solid bombs.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 9, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No effin’ way my man. SIlva is just on another level. That’s Griffin’s sickness, I mean that’s his fatal flaw right there. Returning to his brawler form and decidin’ to go toe-to-toe with Silva is suicide! Add to that the fact that his chin isn’t even solid. that easily spells KO…

by "The Negation" on Aug 9, 2009 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This wasn’t fixed but it was setup to be exactly what it was. I called it since day one damnit!!! You sacrifice a popular fighter to raise the profile of another. Forrest’s appeal won’t take a hit and anderson’s “back” (as if he was gone to begin with, fn goldy). Nothing more than a sacrifice.

To add to the post above – Forrest has a below average chin especially for a LHW.

by NameNotRequired on Aug 9, 2009 2:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not a “below average” but a “poor” chin! Like a brittle piece of cement ready to crack at anytime.

Forrest dislocated the jaw dude:

“I heard his jaw was dislocated very early in the fight…then he took several more punches to the jaw. Apparently he can’t hear out of the ear on that side either. He left the octagon because he needed medical attention asap. At first they thought his jaw was broken, then said it was dislocated.”

HOpefully all the idiots learned a few things last night:

A) Just cause you dont like a fighters personality, that doesnt take away froma fighters skills.

B) BJ is in a class above the rest at 155 lbs.

C) Kenny is NOT Gsp!

4) Forrest is the most overated fighter alive. lImited skills….all he has is intangibles like heart and siZe! For a top 5 lIghtheavyweight to get dominated like that by a middleweight is just embarressing….and you idiots called him a CHAMPION! hahahaha! Forrets looked silly last night, and I loved every second of it. He gt dominated by a fighter that didnt give him enough respect to even keep his hands up. Forrest slow ass, couldnt land a punch on a fighter that kept his hands at his waste for an entire round! what a joke!

by john G on Aug 9, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Size isn’t intangible.

by pancake head on Aug 9, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know the definition of intangible…what I meant is that his skills are nothing more then average, but he has the “Intangibles in the fight game”…non skill attributes!

Jeez John, are you still bitter that he smacked Rampage around for 5 rounds?

by PW on Aug 9, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There always seems to be some smart ar$e when it comes to Anderson Silva. First he was boring because he didn’t KO Cote and Leites immediately, when neither of them two had any intention in engaging because they both knew that they didn’t have a hope at winning, then when he not only beats but destroys and humiliates a top 10 LHW (arguably top 5) and former champion people claim the fight was fixed.

Forrest was already done before the final blow, Andy was toying with him and already had dropped him twice and had him hurt badly, it only needed one more punch on the jaw, no matter how hard, to beat Forrest. His jaw was already dislocated so it didn’t need a powerful punch from a guy as technical and strong a striker as Silva. Anyone who claims this fight was fixed is a Silva hater, clueless to the sport or a moron, in most cases all 3.

War Silva, time to humiliate Hendo and send his smug arse packing to retirement.

Dana felt bad for Forrest. It is obvious. He likes Forrest and Forrest is a fan favorite.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 9, 2009 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Silva Griffin as fight of the night was a joke, and to think I criticised Shogun/Coleman getting that award at 93. That was fight of the Millenium compared to last nights one sided shelacking! I get the KO of the night, but I thought a fight of the night should at least be competitive and have to have at least 2 rounds of back and forth action?

Looks like its Dana’s way of rewarding Forrest: “Thanks pal for taking a total ass whooping and finally making Silva look good. Hopefully I’ll now be able to sell some PPV’s with him headlining, so here’s FOTN bonus for your troubles.”

Seems to me like Silva has people turning against the cats he beats. You look at a guy like Franklin who was a fan favorite for a while, then gets dropped by Anderson people don’t seem to care for Franklin as much anymore. Sad thing is, it’s happening to another very likeable guy like Griffin. Silva is just way to methodical & quick for any of these cats. Thus him wanting to go to boxing. I am the biggest GSP nuthugger there is, but A.S. is in a class of his own. A.S. THE #1 P4P fighter in the world, love him or hate him.

Anderson and Machida are buddies. They won’t fight.

Although, Silva only has a few fights left.

Silva wants Roy Jones next year, he will get it.

Silva will make more $ against Roy Jones. Multi million dollar deal, much much more than he would in UFC (200k fights with bonuses)

Tough to match Shogun up with Anderson if he loses to Machida.

First things first, Anderson defends 185 against Hendo. That should give us 8 months before any talk of 205 lbs fights.

Dude.

I think we need to all take a breath. When BJ lost to GSP, “BJ is done, BJ is done.”

Now, “Forrest is done”

Do you people realize that Anderson Silva is absolutely amazing? Forrest has hung in there with Rampage, Shogun, etc.
Forrest is fine.

Anderson’s striking and elusiveness is out of this world. Forrest will still be a top 10 LHW his whole career.

Far from done.

How is Forrest done? He lost to the best MMA fighter ever probably. I guarentee any other 205er other than maybe Machida would look just as bad as Forrest did against him. I mean Hendo and Franklin are some pretty quality fighters as well and they looked silly against Silva. Silva has good enough standup to outclass Roy Jones in my opinion and there’s just no one else in MMA anywhere near his standup.

Have you got shrapnel on the brain? Dana will never in a million years promote that fight. Silva would get destroyed by RJJ very very easily. Like Dana would want his P4P best to take such a monumental beating on one of his shows. Like Dana would want to give boxing any kind of an advertisement? He’s trying to kill it off, it’s a rival!!! When RJJ wins, it’ll spark off the “boxers are better than MMA fighters” debate, and you think Dana would really want to be the man responsible for that and do damage to his own brand that he’s fought so hard to build up, for the sake of a few extra bucks??? Not a prayer!

Was the Griffin fight fixed? Seriously? I just rewatched it, and thats all I can think… If you seriously break it down, and look at it..it looks COMPLETLEY fixed… Like, Silva hit him, and instead of JUMPING in on Forrest, he waited like he knew Forrest was going to quit…cuz if you watch, you see Silvas legs standing there b4 forrest even waves his hands, and Silvas just watching Forrest, waiting almost… Also, NOBODY gets knocked out by a backwards stepping punch… Who is this guy? Kimbo Slice? Come on… I dont know..I cant watch this fight and say it wasnt fixed… I think Dana wanted Anderson Silva vs Dan henderson to happen in the near future, and was scared Forrest might land a few shots on Silva, bust him up a little…and that we would have to wait 6-7 months to see him again… But now you can fucking put him in a main event in what? 3 months? This was completle bullshit

Griffin looked way bad, who gets Ko’d by a jab? Griffin will be back and out point someone. Bj = Da champ! Haha Florrian looked rattled and out of his element!!!!!! Go Hollwood vs Silva im calling it here.

BJ BJ BJ!!! and spandex bj, taking a page out of gsp/silvas book huh, looked solid, dispatched another “#1 contender” like i thought = ) BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Aug 9, 2009 3:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I laughed when i saw that. Black belt spandex ftw i guess! Anyone know why Kenflo dropped the samurai entrance – i think that’s why he lost the fight.

Congrats!!! BJ looked good. Spandex up the crack and picking it out ~ not so good.

by TapedUpPair on Aug 9, 2009 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Adam BJ looked great. He looked good and he had a heck of a game plan. He dominated the boxing exchanges and let Florian try to take him down. While in the clench, he landed some shots while forcing Kenny to expend energy. When he had the chance, he landed some flurries but he didn’t try to end the fight early and gas himself. He just slowed down and let Kenny expend energy. By the 4th, Kenny was tired and desperate and Bj picked him up and slammed him. Once on the ground, it was pretty much over. Kenny was truly the #1 contender but if Bj fights this smart against the rest of them, I don’t think anyone stands a chance at light weight.

where the hell does dana get off deciding who the fans money goes too for an oustanding fight? anderson silva gets 60,000 for being cocky and fighting with his hands down so we can all see how “great” he is. doesnt anyone else see what an ass this guy is?? ill be the first to admit hes abnormally talented, but hes so full of himself and his talents and hes grew a pretty big head as of late. i personally am not interested in the guy taunting opponents just because he can. and than theres forrest. im a fan, not a huge fan but still a fan. while i did feel bad for forrest and his complete schooling by anderson in stand-up, its no excuse to not be a bigger man than he was a fighter on this nite. to run out of the arena is ridiculous at this level of competition. for the first time , forrest resembled danas bratty little son of the boss who getswhat he wants or throws a tantrum. theres so many up and comers that fought tonight that ddint see a penny extra other than their peddy paycheque. for dana to issue extra paydays to these two clowns is ridiculous. how the hell is that fight of the night?? dana fed the spyder with an ideal matchup and he preyed on it. it was damn sure not a good fight. it was one sided and humiliating for forrest. usually dana makes fair and acurate award bonuses, but tonight begs the arguement of dana having too much power ansd abusing it. perhaps its time to allow the people who finance these events to vote on such awards, rather than danas byist and seemingly pre-determined system we seen tonight.

People on here know i am a BJ penn fan! I was in a room of people who gave me sooooo much crap to be rooting for him and to pick him winning by submission, rear naked choke, but i said second round! it was great seeing him. I see the same happening with DIego, but Diego is rediculously strong, so that is gonna be neutralized.

Also, to be able to shut people up about his Cardio!! OHH what a feeling. BJ looked as fresh in the 4th as he did in the first.. PLEASE UFC… SIGN AOKI FOR A DREAM MATCH UP!!!

by Javster on Aug 9, 2009 4:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That would be sick if they signed Aoki. There are still some good matchups for Penn but unfortunatley after Diego most of the interesting matchups are with people outside the UFC.

by GSP4Prez on Aug 9, 2009 6:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree although I don’t think he would win against Diego’s speed. Great seeing BJ at his best tonight. Had heart, & stanima. Finally.

Did anyone else react to Mike Goldberg’s comment about hos “Classy” these to fighters are? I mean, give props to BJ for his fighting ability but to say he is a “classy” fighter after all the shit he has pulled? Shut the hell up & let Joe Rogan comment these types of things. I used to like Goldberg but he is starting to bore me with his same comments over & over again. Get a clue!

by neeko on Aug 9, 2009 6:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Joe and Mike were both sitting there “speculating” as they call it about how BJ looks tired and BJ is slowing down and all this bullshit. You think BJ wants to answer their questions?

That’s BJs personality. He knows he’s the best and he’s tired of hearing everyone doubt it even though he proves it time after time.

He just dismantled a guy who fans said he’d lose to in the first round and the fans are already saying shit like “I don’t think he can do that to Diego!!!!” Like…fuck off.

by KMG on Aug 9, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never said that BJ wouldn’t win against Kenny. I knew BJ would win this fight. I also said that Florian doesn’t have Diego’s explosiveness & think this wil be the factor in the next fight. I love BJ but have become a huge Diego fan after him dropping to LW. It’s hard to predict. But I still think Diego can win against BJ unless BJ shows up again w/a game plan that will shock us.

by neeko on Aug 9, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think BJ will have a problem with Diego. Diego lost a lot of strength making the weight cut. Joe Daddy and Guida both were able to absorb Diegos strikes and go all three rounds with him.

by Kdog on Aug 9, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Diego might be more aggressive than Kenny (not that he will win). Kenny thought he could pull a GSP by wearing him down against the cage. But he’s not GSP. He can’t get takedowns like the best functional wrestler in mma a weight class above can. And he could hit BJ with any strike of note all night! Once it went to the ground (great switch by BJ) he owned Ken-Flo.

Kenny is a tough kid who gave it his best, but he was outclassed.

Great fight, BJ!

Silva just CLOWNED a recent former LHW Champ. No doubt about who the #1 P4P is. He would kill GSP, who I don’t believe will fight him now. He doesn’t want to damage his legacy like Forrest.

Silva can just embarrass people out there. It’s sick.

by revjames13 on Aug 9, 2009 5:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hope Vera walks through Soszynski so we can see him take on Silva. The other test i wanna see Silva in is not a shitty boxing match but a K1 fight against Badr Hari – you know that shit will be fireworks!!!!!!!

by Insain on Aug 9, 2009 6:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brandon Vera is another good fighter who would look very bad against Silva.

by real_eyes_and_earz on Aug 9, 2009 8:58 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Forrest throws open door punches he is not a true striker no one in the UFC is except for Silva, GSP and Machida. Hence the reason they are all champs. A real striker knows how to not get hit as well as kick and punch

by hatteras on Aug 9, 2009 9:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was way wrong on those fights!! i thought for sure kenny would do something other than hold bj against the fence bad game plan and he paid the price for it!! silva what else can you say other than , Who is gonna beat this guy???? i was for sure forrest would atleast take him to decision in this one but silva is just a beast!!! I think silva would destroy gsp , silva machida would be a way better fight

by TheDragon on Aug 9, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It was the only gameplan he could have. What else was he going to do? When they weren’t up against the fence Penn dominated the striking. When they were up against the fence, Penn dominated the clench. When they were on the ground, Penn dominated the jitz. Kenny had no way to win and Penn fans knew this.

UFC IS FIXED. FOREST TAKES 101 PUNCHES AGAINST STEPHAN BONNER AND THEN TAKES A JAB WHILE ANDERSON STEPS BACKWARDS AND GETS KNOCKED OUT? GIMME A F’N BREAK. SO FIXED.

Bonnar punches like my sister and Griffin had a dislocated jaw last night. Maybe that was a factor??

I am furious, was I the only person who’s espn channel wasn’t working??!!! Haven’t missed a ufc in years, there isn’t even a re run tonight what a shit channel!! I already miss setanta!!

By the sound of lastnight Anderson was at his scary best, I can’t believe if what I’m hearing is right that Forrest tried to stand and bang… First off he has no ko power and secondly he isnt quick enough to trade with him. His only shot was getting this into a wrestling match and using his size!!

Bj is still pfp one of the best, and I give him props for stepping up to fight the best unlike the Russian farse train!!

So raging that iv missed this!

by Mo on Aug 9, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Three surprises last night for me:

1.Forrest did not look that much bigger than Silva. Too bad because he was much slower.

2.Welcome to the UFC Johnny Hendricks. Yes bad stoppage but obviously another contender in WW. He did his job and who knows if Amir was only going get trounced after. I’ve seen Hendricks on other shows but last night was even more impressive.

3. What Up in the fight of the two George’s. Awesome skills by both Roop and the Aussie. I bet Roops arm is killing today.

The 4th would have been Kendall tapping Big dog, thank god that didn’t happen. Good on Grove though, i think he earned at least another fight in the UFC. Joe Silva looked happy post fight and I am no fan of Kendall, but he earned some respect.

And last but not least… Welcome back BJ (got confidence now don’t ya). Other then Diego who’s left at 155. Bring up Mike Brown.

The reason silva griffen won fight of the night:

becaus Fotn bonuses go to both fighters. forrest earned a bonus way more than kenny or any other losing effort fighter that night. STUPID KENNY!!! he really just tried to push him up against the cage till he got tired!? what is it with delagrotti and G. Jackson fighters that simply REFUSE to fight their opponents. thank god for BJ and Anderson for letting me sleep at night knowing all is not lost in mma

Is anyone else thoroughly unexcited by Couture v. Nog? And the entire UFC 102 card? I actually think I might skip buying this one — the best fight on the card looks like Marq. v. Maia:

Couture v. Nog
Jardine v. Thiago Silva
Leben v. Jake Rosholt
Marquardt v. D. Maia
B. Vera v. Soszynski

by William on Aug 9, 2009 10:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Silva dominated Griffin but so what? Griffin looked like crap and he has quite possibly the worst chin in all of MMA.
The win doesnt make silva better p4p than Fedor or GSP.

He’s third atm.

by Lester The Pimp on Aug 9, 2009 10:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fedor is not even in the top PforP my friend he hasn’t beat the second best HW fighter since pride. Silva,Penn,GSP have all earned the best PforP fighters any order you want to put it is fine but Fedor should of been taken off anyone’s top three list for sure.

by Beaver on Aug 9, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Fedor is a beast but to considered one of the best pound for pound fighters you gotta show you can fight out of your weight class. The other three have but Fedor hasn’t.

by Kdog on Aug 9, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok guys…we need to all make a deal.

We should all be done talking about Fedor. His name should never be mentioned again. He had a golden opportunity to come fight the best and prove he is good (over fighting washed up UFC fighters in no-name promotions) but he stiffed the MMA world instead.

In my book…fuck him. I’ll never say his name again and he’s not the best because he chooses to avoid proving it, which makes him a pussy. Arlovsky was kicking his ass before he took a lucky ducking overhand. Fedor is not the best, he won’t prove he’s the best…so fuck him.

by KMG on Aug 9, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

For sure KMG there is already many of fans stating that they will not pay to watch Fedor fight in Strikeforce M1 and Fedor made a huge mistake by not listning to what the fans wanted and took the easy road. I don’t know what Strikeforce was thinking by making the deal when they know the fans wanted to see Fedor in the UFC they should know the fans pay their bills? I guess they will all find out the hard way when us fans speak back by simply not watching.

DANA WHITE GIVE ANDERSON SILVA A SHOT AT LYOTO MACHIDA!!! THAT IS THE ONE GUY WHO CAN FIGHT SILVA

by sunny santoro on Aug 9, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t deny Anderson being top P4P in the world. I just wish he wouldn’t get so cocky in the ring w/his hands down. Show some respect dude. We know how great you are, but great attitude as a fighter? He wasn’t like this before. I miss the old Silva who was humble & always respected the fighters he was up against.

I’m pretty sure he’s been hearing from a lot of people how his last two fights haven’t been exciting. I think he was really trying to just win over the fans with that move. At the press conference he said that some people may look down of Forrest for losing the fight but Anderson said he respects all fighters in the ufc, especially a former champ like forest.
