Report: Forrest Griffin suffers possible jaw injury at UFC 101 (Updated)

***Update: Forrest Griffin was not injured during his fight at UFC 101 against Anderson Silva and his quick exit following the knockout loss was from emotional -- not physical distress.

MMAWeekly has confirmed with representatives from Zinkin Entertainment, Griffin's management group, that he is physically fine following the Saturday night fight. Griffin suffered no broken jaw and he is physically okay, said the Zinkin representative, but emotionally he is definitely not dealing well with the loss.

A report surfaced earlier today from Telegraph.co.uk that claimed Griffin's jaw had been dislocated by "The Spider" at some point in the first round of their light heavyweight tilt on August 8.

Silva and Griffin spent the first minute or so feeling each other out, but when Forrest turned up the heat, it was Silva who caught fire. The Brazilian started hulking up and toying with the former light heavyweight champ while continually dropping him with accurate and well timed bombs.

Yet it was a simple fade-away right hand that eventually felled the The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 champ, leaving many fans in attendance and at home scratching their heads.

Griffin, who is known for his tremendous heart, seemed dazed and confused and basically flopped to the ground like a pro wrestler trying to "sell" his opponent.

Any chance that Griffin had to either criticize his performance or credit Silva's was lost when he bolted from the cage and ran into the back -- despite trying to be dissuaded by a UFC official.

It was the second such time Griffin walked out on his post-fight obligations.

Star-divide

After suffering a devastating technical knockout loss to Keith Jardine at UFC 66, Griffin sprinted to the locker room in tears, unable to face the reality of being stopped in what was likely a pivotal fight in his still-young career.

While the emotional reaction to that loss was understandable, some fans were not so forgiving the second time around.

Whether or not Griffin faces any type of repercussions from the Zuffa brass for ducking out early is unlikely; however, the bigger question coming out of this fight may be where each fighter goes from here.

Griffin now has back-to-back losses against Silva's tenth straight victory inside the cage.

While "The Spider" will likely face Dan Henderson later this year in a rematch for Silva's 185-pound title, Forrest might not be so lucky.

Perhaps a rematch with the loser of Rashad Evans vs. Quinton Jackson?

Stay tuned.

Good Job Jesse,

It was a horrible matchup for Forrest like I said from the day it was announced. Having said that, I don’t think anyone expected it to look that easy. Anderson is definitely the P4P king and he might be the best athlete of any sport in the world today. His level of coordination is crazy. There’s no amount of training that can give someone a nervous system like that. He was born with it. I think he could actually beat Roy Jones. I know there will be a lot of posts about how an MMA fighter can’t beat a guy who spent their whole life training for just boxing, and I would normally agree, but we’re talking about a real freak of nature here. Dan has the only chance IMO now. I’m not interested in seeing Nate get destroyed. Only a wrestler can beat Andy. And they can’t do it if they’re rocked so my suggestion to Dan is “you can’t wait for the right time to go for a takedown. You have to close the distance immediately and grind out a takedown. Never stand, not even to set something up.” If he beats Dan, I want to see him fight Couture (assuming he wins and looks to still be under the hill).

The other fights that interest me with Anderson is Lyoto and I know they like to drink each others urine but I agree with Dana that this is not a team sport. The other fights are of course Hendo and the one that really gets me going because I don’t see Lyoto happening is GSP. You talk about wrestlers and he has some SICK takedowns and GnP even against great JuJitsu guys!

by Edgecrusher71 on Aug 9, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

@ Punch You in the Ovaries:

Anderson could beat seasoned boxers; he certainly wouldn’t be the first to defy conventional thought (Naseem Hamed and Ricardo Mayorga come to mind). What you and many others are forgetting, though, is that Roy spent his career doing the same thing Anderson’s been doing in the UFC; making guys miss and countering effectively, while taking advantage of his own unparalleled athleticism, hand speed and power.

Roy himself was at the Wachovia Center last night. I’d like to see Anderson win in a fight, but do you really think that Roy would be stupid enough to let the guy beat him at his own game? You’re being as unfair to Roy as boxing purists are being unfair to Anderson (in giving him little to no chance). I have this feeling that if the two ever fight it will be technical, slow-paced and a test of each fighter’s patience; something we won’t see in the UFC unless Bisping earns a fight against Silva.

As for Forrest, I feel bad for following a kneejerk reaction and clowning some of his fans (friends of mine, not complete strangers) before finding out that something was wrong with his jaw. I heard that it was thought to be a fracture just after the fight, too. Whatever the case there’s no reason to give him shit, he suffered the kind of injury that needs immediate medical attention.

I have NO DESIRE in seeing Anderson vs, GSP! I pray that fight doesnt happen. It will just be a ton of hype and a complete mismatch. Get real, I love GSP and think the world of him, but if anderson is moving up in weight and dominating top fighters from the stacktest division in mma…then how can anyone expect a welterweight, moving up in weight. its just not realistic and I hope that the pressure fr this fight from the silly fans that dont know better doesnt cause Dana to book it.

Forrest is what he is, all size and heart…average at best skills! TO think that the majority of this site picked against Anderson and BJ is a joke. I knew they were great match ups on papers but would materialize into compete mismatches. forrest should be embarressed! He couldnt land a single strike on an opponent that didnt show him any respect and fought with his hands at his waist for almost an entire round. Forrest just looked Pathetic. He shouldnt be allowed to speak Anderson’s name! Its not so easy is it forrest when your opponents show up with 2 working acl’s and in shape! hahahah…Forrest BETTER pick an easier fight than te loser of Rashad/Rampage because there is nO DOUT IN MY MIND that it would equal a 3 fight Losing streak for the “awwshucks, MMA gumP”! HAHAHAHA!

to THINK, i MADE a ton of money last night watching 2 of my favorites completely dominate opponents that I cant stand! what a night! Forrest needs to take his average at best skills and go fight other over rated opponents like TIto or something! I dont EVER see Forrest winning another fight against the upper echelon like Rampage, Shogun, Machida, Rashad. Forrest needs to fight someone like: Vera, Rematch withh Jardine (which I think he would lose)..thiago siva would be interesting. Frankin vs. Forrest would be cool. as would Forrest/Banha!

by john G on Aug 9, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

correct me if I’m wrong john G, but did you just make up the word stacktest??

besides that, i agree… i have no desire to see anderson DESTROY GSP

i’d rather see silva get the loser of rampage rashad, than forrest get beat again.

forrest needs maybe the winner of jardine/thiago silva.

BrassEye,

I pretty much agree with you. I just said “could” beat Roy Jones. As in, I think it’s possible.

John,

No need to be obnoxious about Forrest! Most educated people knew it was a horrible match-up for him even if they were rooting for him. How did you win a lot of money picking BJ and Silva? You must have dropped a shit-ton. I lost my ass on Neer.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Aug 9, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP would beat silva convincingly. St. Pierre would take him down at will. I’d love to watch him pull the legs off of the spider.

Punch…I was so focking nervous…I dropped a shit ton of money on Anderson and BJ! Im so grateful that BJ and Anderson didnt make me sweat it out, and dominated from start to finish!

Silva’s reaction it’s much faster than the guys gsp has fought till now. Let alone the strengh n’ technic, I’m not saying gsp does not have a chance, but the one he has is very slim.

Anderson could kill GSP if he wanted to.. GSP is too short, too slow for Anderson, too weak in the standup, I think Anderson could submit him too he’s just too long!…
Forrest performance was totally embarrassing though running forward and throwing arm punches, no defense whatsoever! dude needs to learn how to turn his body into his punches, and circle instead of running forward without defending yourself a la Liddell..

roberto, gsp is not too slow for anderson, gsp is a freak of nature, his hands, reflexes, etc are just as good as anderson, as far as genetics go you cant beat gsp, the dude has a 40 inch vertical, and as far as strenght goes he routenely takes LHWs down at will, he trains with HW olympic wrestlers. i think gsp could suprise people no one has his explosiveness, at takedowns, realistically he has a good chance. anderson stated in post fight interview, that under no circumstances would he fight machida. they are close friends and training partners, but he said that not the only reason, but because machida presents a big problem. it has been reported in past by anderson himself, that basically machida does to him, what he does to evryone else, make him look silly. i seriously doubt anyone will be able to even win a single round of machida for at least the next 3 yrs

Forrest was way too easy to predict with his strikes. The high kick was seen from a mile, and the combo’s he threw were all so straight forward that Anderson could see where they were headed before they even got there. Forrest’ only way of winning would have been to get in a dominant position and stay there! He got schooled.

I must admit I’m in awe of Silva’s confidence. I think Forrest was simply overcome with shame and that’s why he ran out like that. I actually feel sorry for the guy. Reports circulated last night and this morning that Forrest Griffin’s decision to leave the Octagon and the arena were due to a possible broken/dislocated jaw and hearing loss. The reports, which were circulated widely by the Telegraph, stated that Griffin left in order to seek immediate medical care.

Inside Fights has confirmed with sources close to Griffin’s camp that he did not leave the cage due to injury. While we don’t know why he abruptly left the cage (other than being upset and emotional after his loss), we can confirm that the injury reports are not true.

Any fans that were saying the fight was fixed are f’ng morons. The UFC has no reason whatsoever to fix a fight especially one that was so tailor made to be an unfortunate, one-sided beatdown. Feel bad for Forrest, there was just absolutely nothing he could do with Anderson. Anderson is like some real life comic book character. It’s like he sees everything you are doing in slow motion.

by Adam T. on Aug 9, 2009 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

Can people truly imagine what this would do to the UFC lagacy if something like this was true. Man “some” MMA Fans are morons. This is not the WWE. That’s the problem w/bring fans that crossed over from the WWE because of some beastly looking wrestler who crosses over to the UFC. They need to get a clue. Forrest is a warrior & got dropped by the best P4P in the world. How can that not truly happen? jeesh!

by neeko on Aug 9, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’ve been watching MMA 5 plus years, these fights aren’t fixed.

New fans are used to boxing gloves which are much softer. They don’t understand the amount of power that comes in these light gloves. They haven’t seen enough fights.

The bar I went to was the busiest I’ve ever seen, UFC is catching on now. Super main stream. UFC 80-99 had nothing on last night as far as trafic for bars.

by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 9, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, boxing gloves and MMA gloves generate virtually the same amount power per square inch. The big difference when it comes to power is comparing a gloved punch, and a bareknuckle punch[which is considerably more powerful]. People need to stop comparing boxing-MMA gloves…Ayt?!

I didn’t have a problem with how it ended, I figured it was cumulative damage. Forrest was completely outclassed, to be honest I expected a better fight, but Silva’s striking is insane. Probably dislocated the jaw earlier in the fight and that fade away right hand hit the injury in the right spot and put him away.

not even sure how i feel about this one……very out of character for Forrest. I can only guess that the earlier shots must have really dazed him. I don’t believe that the fight was fixed, Forest is the last guy that would play that game….besides, if it was fixed, the only way it would be plausible would be for Silva to take a dive.

I’ve dislocated my shoulder a dozen times. Occasionally I have gotten extremely dizzy and faint if it came really far out. This is just playing basketball and stuff.

Me imagining a really good dislocation that is super painful and can make you light headed followed by HUGE strikes to the injured spot is unfathomable, especially when it is the world’s most dangerous man hitting you.

Dislocations can be painful and also can cause you to be very light headed (I have a bad shoulder that has done it a dozen times).

It is very painful, add that Silva’s punches to the same spot and NOT putting the jaw back into it’s socket is SUPER painful, you could tell he was faint at the end of the fight. It wasn’t faking.

I just think it was an terrible fight stylistically for Forrest. Forrest is a striker but not on par with Silva. They only advantage he had in the fight was size which he could potentially push silva around. Forrest is not known for knockout power so that aspect of size was not a real advantage either. I think the type of fighter to take on anderson is either a wrestler that can survive the standup like Hendo and then beat him up on the ground or a striker like Machida who is equally elusive and technical. I also think GSP could take him skill wise but the size advantage would be rough for GSP

He fought to his capabilities before. Cote has vicious power and an iron chin. Anderson was taking his time, picking his shots and would have won the decision if not finish him in the fourth or fifth. Leites just plopped on the floor and Anderson was smart to take away any chance, albeit small, that he could get caught. Against Forrest (who can’t bust a grape) Anderson could go right at him with zero fear of being hit.

When Forrest ran out of the Octagon, I knew something had to be wrong. There is no shame in losing to Anderson Silva, especially in that manner. This report confrim’s that he did in fact need help right away.

I’ve never had a dislocated jaw so I have no idea what that pain feels like but I have been hit hard and it sure isn’t a pleasent feeling. Add that to the fact he couldn’t hear, amongst all that noise. Dang…I’m surprised he still had the where with all to even sprint to the back of the arena without stumbling face first into the ground causing an even bigger scene. These guys really do deserve a lot more credit than people realize.

Should he of stuck around for a few minute’s taking the pain like a “Man”. I don’t know guys and gals. Unless you’ve walked in those shoes. Any negetive response is basically invalid. Another thing, did said injury happen against the Pound 4 Pound BEST MMA Fighter alive?

Fighters receive immediate medical attention after getting knocked out. If Forrest was really concerned about the injury, he would have stayed in the octagon and had the cage-side doctor examine him. Forrest ran out of embarrassment. As a Forrest fan, I wish there were some other reason, but sadly, I don’t think there is.

Can you imagine the downer associated with devoting six months of your life of training 24/7 and then to have the fight ended like it did? I can’t help but have some sympathy for Griffin. I think that he might throw in the towel – he could easily get a job with the UFC in some other capacity.

Am I the only only who didnt see a single person watching Silva/Griffin that said it looked fixed, or even “went home scratching their heads”?

That never crossed the minds or came up in the discussion of the 8-12 fight fans at my house (or all the people that called and text me as soon as it happened!). Actually, everyone with me was just like “holy f****** s***!”

I mean, when his back was against the wall, with his boss criticizing his performances, when given a handpicked opponent who would push a brawling pace, against a former 205 CHAMPION who happens to be one of the 2 or 3 biggest fan favorites in the UFC, Spider made him look like an amateur.

When I saw the fight, my reaction was immediately that Anderson had further cemented his legacy and had done so in a way that reeled Dana White right back to his old home on Spider’s nuts. He couldnt have had a more impressive performance in my eyes.

“The fight was fixed” never crossed my mind, Forrest was made to look silly by one of the 3 best fighters in the world. I dont know how any fans could have left scratching their heads after that beatdown!

You probably don’t boo an active guard or chant “USA!” at every non-Caucasian fighter either — but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Unfortunately our fanbase is peppered with idiots and losers. Just spend a few days in the Sherdog forums for proof of that.

@ Reid W…I had about 4 or 5 people telling me they thought the fight was fixed. My first thought was, “Are you facking serious right now?” Jesse hit the last nail in the coffin with his reponse.

I like going to the bar and watching event’s in that type of atmosphere. I actually got the Owner to start sponsoring fighter’s. However, I hate it when people boo or just say stupid stuff at the most simple things. I just roll with the punches and try to answer any question’s or comment’s people have about what just happened. It is kinda cool seeing their expression after you’ve told them something they’ve never even thought about. We still got a long way to go before folk’s out there realize EXACTALLY what they are watching.

Yeah, I never thought that either.

I was flat out amazed with Silva.

I think those of us that know the sport, know the strikes can damage and also we know that Forrest would NEVER do something like that. His personality wouldn’t allow him to toss a fight.

Plus the UFC is so ambitious that they would never try to have a fight fixed.

by the prodi-G$ on Aug 9, 2009 12:20 PM EDT reply actions

People criticizing Forrest, have you ever considered that his jaw got dislocated earlier in the round. And every shot he took after that sent shattering pain in his face? And that’s why he just couldn’t take anymore after the fadeaway jab?

As far as sanctions for Griffin leaving the ring, if Lesnar wasn’t sanctioned for his UFC 100 antics, nobody will.

by ftg314 on Aug 9, 2009 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

Neither fighter did anything to warrant any sanctions on their immediate post-fight activities, IMO.

Lesnar, regardless of how tacky it was, decided to display his true feelings for an opponent who trash-talked him. Nothing to apologize for, while according to the report, Griffin was legitimately hurt. None of the people who have criticized him leaving the arena and call him a “baby” would have stuck around if they’d been punched so hard their jaw was dislocated and they lost hearing in one ear. More likely they’d urinate and defecate themselves, and wait for a stretcher to come take them out.

Anybody criticizing Forrest for getting knocked out by the Spider is smoking crack. There is absolutely no shame in losing to Anderson, no matter how it goes down. Forrest is still a champion. Rogan was out of line with that “most embarassing knockout in the history of the UFC.” Just like there was no shame in Penn losing to GSP. Some fighters are just on another planet, like Silva, GSP, Machida and Penn. All of the weight classes with the exception of Heavyweight are firmly established, and will remain so until the champs retire or change weight classes.

I couldn’t believe how many people thought forrest would win, I knew it was a horrible match up. The only guy who would give silva a good fight standing IMO is machida. Silva’s striking is way beyond anyone in the ufc other than machida. I still think if gsp was bigger it would be a good fight, but he is kind of small compared to silva. One thing I know for sure is gsp isn’t dumb like forrest and since his loss to serra never fights against his opponents strengths, he knows he’s too small for silva and said he wouldn’t fight him unless he was over 200 lbs. I believe in a year or 2 gsp could beat silva in a non title fight maybe at a catch weight of 190, because I know gsp want’s to do it for the challenge not the belt. In a three round fight gsp could win the fight if he could keep silva down for most of it and pull off the W by decision thats about the only way I see him winning unless he really improves him bjj and subs him.

I have to disagree with you there. I don’t think he flopped to the floor. He got hurt early in the fight and the last well placed shot caught him flush. His momentum as much as Silva’s power dropped Griffin. Forrest always looks awkward when he gets dropped.

by ftg314 on Aug 9, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to admit. I didn’t think it was fixed, but I do think Griffin realized he was not gonna win this fight within the opening minutes of the first round and decided to flop like an NBA player at the first opportunity. If Griffin’s jaw was dislocated early in the match, then why wasn’t it stopped for Doctor Check like when their is a cut by the eye? Griffin spilled out like a WWE wrestler after a chair shot and that is why I think most people are saying “wtf” and “holy sh*t”, not because of Silva’s performance. Most of the people watching this fight were already expecting an unbelievable performance by Silva, so it was no surprise he won.

by Mr Niceguy on Aug 9, 2009 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

Forrest was shocked at how good AS and for the first time in his fighting life was confused and didn’t want anymore of it was my impression during the fight. After he got hit a few times it was like he was trying to say “stop, I’m done” and wave the fight off.

I agree with Rogan that it was one of the worst KO’s ever in terms of embarrassment. It’s not embarrassing to lose to AS or to get KO’d by him, but when you are a recent former Champ and deep down you believe on any given night that you could beat anyone in the world, and then you face a guy that shows that you are nowhere near his class and basically clowns you in front of the world, that has to be very hard to accept.

Forrest will be back, of course, maybe against someone like Franklin. It shouldn’t be a gimme fight, it should be someone that can get him some pride back. This has gotta be bad for his book. One second he is on top of the world, even with his loss to Rashad, and the next he is running out of the stadium so he doesn’t have to face the cameras. I feel for the guy.

But hey, AS had something to prove and he used Forrest to do it. I’d like to see two more fights from him at MW (Hendo is on and then the Maia/Marquardt winner) and then he should move up to LHW and beat everyone there except Lyoto.

Lyoto is the one guy he doesn’t want to fight and not just because they are friends but because Lyoto is just as hard or harder to hit than he is.

by revjames13 on Aug 9, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

I want to see Henderson for sure his last fight he was doing good until he ran out of gas early in the second wich was mainly from the weight drop he was not use to dropping to 185. I don’t understand Forrest’s game plan against Silva? I know he’s tough but he was chasing Anderson with some wild strikes against one of the greatest counter punchers in MMA today if not the best? He glazed Anderson a couple times but that’s about it he got aggressive way to early in the fight and should of thrown more controlled strikes and when Anderson backs away stop re group and come in again chasing Anderson with strikes is murder for any fighter? At least try to get in grabbling match or get Silva down to try and fatigue Silva a little to hopefully slow him down a little on his feet. Brutal idea Forrest to try and stand and strike with Silva.

One thing a lot of people don’t understand are the same basic striking principles of what hand is stronger in a forward motion and a backward motion. In going forward it is the hand opposite the lead leg. For example right foot out in front then its the left hand or when the left foot is out in front then its the right hand. Then in going backwards its the same hand as the lead leg. Right foot right hand and left foot left hand.

So Silva while backpedaling in a right foot lead stance lands a solid right jab the strongest possible punch he could in his given stance and its a fluke knockout? Not to mention it was targeted perfectly on the jar line which is exactly where you need to hit someone for the knockout.

But the fact that Silva just walked up to Forrest which is something you never want to do in a fight shows how much he didn’t fear him at that point. Silva is an amazing fighter but his over confidence is his biggest weak point. Right before he landed the knockout shot if Forrest had landed a single punch or kick it would of been a easy knockdown since he was walking. When your legs cross your body is off balance for a split second and if a shot was landed then it would of been a different fight. But Silva also knew at that point Forrest was not that educated or tactical of a striker by that point so it did not matter.

Why would the fight be fixed for Anderson Silva when Forrest Griffin is more popular? Usually in the situation of a fixed fight, the fight is fixed for the guy that everybody likes which is Forrest Griffin. Anderson Silva doesn’t have anything to gain from a fixed fight because he refuses to fight Lyoto Machida. Yes, Forrest Griffin usually fights to the death, but his body can only sustain a certain amount of damage before it catches up with him. By the way, it’s not the first time he’s shown bad sportsmanship.

But, Silva seems to be content destroying his opponents will power / fight spirit.

Franklin left the division.
Henderson rolled over and gave him his back.
Toyed with Cote.

Forrest ran out.

He doesn’t seem to be looking for the amazing knockouts anymore. It seems he would rather make the fighters look unworthy.

Silva will NEVER fight Machida. Screw what Dana white thinks and screw eveyone else that thinks they should fight. Silva will retire as being the best p4p fighter in the world or will move out of the UFC. What will Dana do ? Fire him ? Silva doesn’t care. Dana will ofeer him a gazillion dollars. Silva has more respect for himself and Machida than that. Last but not least why take the chance of losing the fight and losing his status as best p4p fighter. He even said during the post fight press conference that Machida would be a serious problem for him.

by Jagger on Aug 10, 2009 8:37 AM EDT reply actions

Hypotheticaly speaking, if Silva were to dominate the 205 division and then loose to Machida in a decision does that really hurt his P4P status? I think it would only soildify it even more,as long as he doesn’t get ko’d or submitted n the first round. He beat the #5 LHW in the world while teasing and playing games, with little to no effort. If he beats Rashad and Rampage and looses to MAchida. There is absolutely no shame in that. Like I said if he can take that to a decision lose or in the event that he wins the fight, he would still be the best p4p fighter in all of mma ever. 3 weight classes beating top 5 conteders is ridiculous and unheard of with the exception of him. I personally would love to see that fight being a fan of the both of them way before their UFC days, even though I know there is very little chance for it to happen.

Forrest was going to lose the fight no matter what in my opinion, but he could have made it a lot further than he did, and probably not have embarrassed himself as badly if he had just stuck to his gameplan.

It was clear that as soon as Silva stunned him the first time, Forrest threw everything out the window and decided to go for broke. Silva played him, and he ate it up. He deserved to lose, and he made hmiself look like a child (again) with the way he handled it.

This stuff about Roy Jones jr is nutts. Maybe if they limit the event to boxing and make them wear those cushy boxing gloves, Roy has a chance. But, in an MMA fight with Roy coming into the octagon with boxing his only skill, he would get killed.

If anyone tht saw the Silva fight- knew what they were watching they would know it was a fix—— Forrest Griffin is know for being a tough fighter, Bloody toe to toe fights…… He must have had someone bet money against himself and then took a dive——— He flopped2 seperate times when he got hit on the cheek from a punch that Silva threw off of his rear foot—— UFC is BS…..

by Jesse B on Aug 10, 2009 11:22 AM EDT reply actions

That silva fight was such a fix- Griffin flopped 2 times from weakly thrown jabs that Silva threw off of his back foot 2TIMES And they only hit him in the cheek -not the chin—-Griffin is known to be a toughguy in the sport- bloody fights and never gives up- he flopped like fish and I’ll never watch him fight again

by Jesse B on Aug 10, 2009 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

You are such a twat. Lets see you get hit by Silva a couple of times and see if you can stand afterwards.

by Casualfan on Aug 10, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not saying it was fixed by the ufc—— but Griffin took a dive——HE got hit in the CHEEK- not the chin—— Watch it again—-and he flopped twice—- Silva may be a good fighter but he’s not strong enough to knock someone out on his back foot- with a jab—- Come ON—I’ve seen griffen in blood baths getting his ass kicked—— and now he gets knocked down by a jab—— Griffen had someone place a BIG bet against himself - that he would go down in the first round—— The odds wouldn’t be incredibly high but He undoubtedly could —-and did control the outcome…..

BOO HOO I’m FORREST!

by GLASS JOE on Aug 10, 2009 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

Ok so there are some that say Forrest was hurt but there has been no offical report that his jaw was injured. But think of this Forrest gave it his all, and not to down him or anything, he just doesnt have the skill to compare to Silva. I can understand the frustration on Forrests part from training all this time and then only to be toyed around by Silva. I still dont see why he waved off the fight after he was knocked down. It was called a KO, but it was still awake, Forrest just took an embarassing beating and didnt want anymore. I think that Silva should stay at 205, because there is no one that can match his skill.

by Just-n on Aug 10, 2009 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Kick a man when he’s down, only cowards do that. Forrest fights on heart and conditioning, but that only takes you so far. As far as stating Anderson Sliva doesn’t have that kind of power to knock someone down backing up,watch some of his fights. It might have been Travis Lutter he was fighting and was on his back punching Lutter’s ribs and i couldn’t help but notice the noise his punches made. Gsp, I’m afraid wouldn’t last very long either. Lyoto and Anderson could be fight of the decade as far as hype goes, something like the first Ali Fraser fight. You can agree or disagree but it takes a ton of guts to enter the octagon, something not many men have.

by Vinnie on Aug 10, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s the easiest thing to do in the world, kick a man when he is down. Forrest what outmatched but he will never back down from ant fight and doesn’t deserve this crap. GSP is a great fighter but his only hope to beat Anderson Sliva is to take the fight to the ground, good luck with that. Lyoto Machida and Anderson Sliva would in my mind one of the greatest machups in UFC history.

i agree that silva and machida would be awesome. i knew forrest was a bitch when he ran out after jardin dribbled his head like a basketball.

If you watched one of the pre-fight interviews with Forrest, he speaks about the fact that he is a different fighter than Silva/Mchida in the sense that they don’t get hit that much. Whereas he makes the point he is one of the most hit fighters in the game. He stated that he doesn’t like getting hit as much any more and regrets that his go for broke style getting blasted every fight has taken a toll, and he was working on trying to be more technical and elusive. Which brings me to the point re: the morons who say the fight was fixed. Just because he was taking bombs vs. Bonnar and everyone else doesn’t mean he can do it every fight. After so many fights ( and each fighter is different ) the brain/pain impact resilience may not be what it used to be ( ala Wandy Silva and others over time). Watch him against Rashad when he was on the ground getting his faced punched- he was tapping and giving up whilehis face was beating Rashad’s fist) So cut with the bullshit of " the fight was fixed because he was taking shots against Stephan Bonnar. That bombs a blazing style aint workin for him anymore. There’s something to being a smart fighter who doesn’t just go for broke taking a hundred shots to the head just to please the fans and show how much heart you have.

by Frank n' Sense on Aug 11, 2009 2:16 AM EDT reply actions

Forrest was already hurt so saying the fight was fixed is silly. I once read you are born with one punch knock out power and it’s not something every fighter can get in the gym. The chin Patrick Cote must have as he took a knee to the head from Anderson in their fight, one which whould have finished most guys. The whole or most of the card was below par, which is funny when you look at all the fighters they have to pick from. I think the 155lb division is as good as it get’s. Love to see BJ and Diego fight, stand up whould be great but BJ has big advantage on the ground. Frank Mir making only 45,000 to fight is a joke as he is one of the top 10 heavys in the world. One last point why does a fighter with Kendall Groves reach not use a jab more like GSP.

I officially hate Silva now… granted he school griffin but that was the most retarded match-up known to man. I can’t stand Silva now because of his total disrespect for a decent fighter. He didn’t have to showboat. Forrest never recovered from the first knock down and Silva knew it… played with him like a cat does a stunned mouse. In my book that goes against the true martial arts way. Silva is turning into a media whore.

My Take.

Fight Fixed? Possible. Likely? No. Why? Everyone would have to be involved in some way and on some level and the risk wouldn’t be worth the payout. Also, the beauty of the fight business is that no matter what the outcome there is going to be options generated. Who cares who wins or loses or how – it’s all just scrap material to build another project for re-sale. Maybe if someone was threatened by a mafia or some such. Even then so many factors are involved it’s just retarded.
If I had to bet on some conspiracy-rigged-fight or whether or not I could eat a can of beef-o-reeno and blow my ass to the moon, I’d put hard currency on the latter.

Also, pay attention to the law of averages. Listen to what people say and watch how they act. Dana White appears to have a life goal. Above all the drama and media blitz there is a purpose – we’ve all got this shit going on – and for DW it seems he wants MMA to become recognized under the umbrella of mainstream sports like NFL, NBA, NHL and the like. So why in the Christ would he risk leveling everything he’s built for a few extra bucks. He’s a little impulsive, probably his fair share of greedy too but he’s not an idiot. It’s not good business.

He should have been arrested for fleeing the scene of a Crime, because that was felony beating he took. All jokes aside Forrest is a great fighter and one of the reasons for it being so popular, also Forrest did not punk out, he fought with alot of heart he just got beat. I still respect Forrest and I don’t hold it against him.
