The best of PRIDE 'Unleashed' on Spike TV this January

So long, grainy YouTube footage.

In news that’s sure to excite both PRIDE fanboys and MMA enthusiasts alike, PRIDE FC will make its return to television this January on Spike TV featuring a "Best of" format that will highlight some of the greatest moments in the now-defunct promotion.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement on Aug. 7 at the UFC 101 Q&A session.

Zuffa — the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship — purchased the Japanese mixed martial arts promotion (and its biggest rival) in 2007. With no television deal and most of its top fighters signing UFC contracts, the entity known as PRIDE became no more.

Now fans will have an opportunity to relive the glory days in early 2010 -- but don't expect to see any fights featuring famed heavyweight and recent Strikeforce acquisition Fedor 'The Last Emperor' Emelianenko.

From White:

"It will kind of be like 'UFC Unleashed.' All the great PRIDE fights that happened with all the stars who are now UFC guys will be on it."

Some of those stars include Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson, Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua, Antonio Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira, Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic, Wanderlei 'The Axe Murderer' Silva and even Anderson 'The Spider' Silva -- who tapped out to Ryo Chonan at 'Shockwave 2004' in one of the craziest submissions you'll ever see.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details on the upcoming "Best of PRIDE" show as they become available. And if you can't wait until January, you can always pick up one of our PRIDE DVD's over in our DVD Store by clicking here.

Yeah, I frigging adored Pride. They had their problems but they can lay claim to so many of the greatest MMA fights ever. Good news that the mainstream will get a look at some of the stars thst crossed over, and why they were considered such legendary fighters.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 8, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sad that no one is gonna see things like the bushido tournament or fedor fights. No Diaz-Gomi. No one will see the greatness of Igor V besides when he got highlight reeled by cro cop or smashed by coleman. No one will see one of the greatest all time fighters in Saku doing relevant fights, only when wand stomped him out. As good a news as this is, i can see a very large part of MMA history being omitted.

True. But it’s better than no exposure at all, and sooner or later most of those fights will be aired. Time heals all wounds, just ask Tito and his bitch Dana.

for me Pride was the golden age of mma! IMO, the biggest fights in mma history took place in Pride! Fedor vs. Cro cop n Nog

by john G on Aug 8, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, they can only show so many “best of” containing fights of UFC-only ex-PRIDE fighters. How many permutations are there of just those guys fighting each other? Surely they’ll have some non-UFC fighters in the mix, but those dudes will be getting their butts kicked in the “best of” clips.

by MMACrossfire on Aug 8, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Come on, John. Everybody that’s been watching MMA for a year or two knows that Lesnar vs. Mir was the biggest hevyweight fight ev- Bwhahahahah! I tried, but I couldn’t complete the sentence.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 8, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well it took them long enough to through all lawsuit and other legal crap and now we’ll finally get to see these fights. In time they’ll air all of them.

JJ- I couldn’t believe that fight was #5 in the 100 greatest fights. I fast forwarded right through it.

by DSmith on Aug 8, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its just a spit in the face to fans who have stuck by mma thrughout the years and know better! when the ufc does crap like that,i honestly feel insulted

by john G on Aug 8, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was conveniently placed in the top 5 right as the rematch was about to take place at the main event of UFC 100. So long, integrity. We hardly knew you.

If Henderson/Franklin 2 had actually taken place, the UFC would have probably added their first fight to the top ten all-time as well. The truth-stretching of fight promoters knows no bounds.

Hell yeah this is goimg to be great, back to the early glory days of MMA. DAM I MISS PRIDE FC!

I guarantee they wont show all the fights we would like to see. Their just gunna show fights with Americans in them.

I see everyone is going crazy over this. I actually think its pretty cool. I was never around for Pride in its heyday, so this is cool.

I dunno how accurate this is, or if it was reported on here before, but I just found this out — Andrei Arlovski playing suicide games: http://www.fighters.com/08/05/andrei-arlovski-confesses-suicide-games-after-losses-to-fedor-emelianenko-brett-rogers

This is better for the UFC. It never made sense why SpikeTV still showed Unleashed episodes featuring Arlovsky, Babalu, and Tim Sylvia.

by TabascoSAUCE on Aug 8, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is awesome. Too bad they will never show fights featuring Fedor or anyone else not in the UFC. Nick Diaz vs. Gomi will never be on Spike.

So?

Diaz got owned by Sanchez. ;)

by Natas on Aug 8, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ithink they will show fights with any UFC ties. i can see them showing Cro Cop vs Fedor, NOG vs Sapp and so on as long as there’s a connection they will also show the most exciting fights that have no connections but for the main part we will see mostly current UFC fighters that fought in Pride Sho Gun against Overeem hell any of Sho Guns fights him, Wandy & Rampage were all aggressive fighters fun to watch. we will see the same NOG his fight against Sapp is one I’ll remember I think the night they fought Sapp was around 380!!

by Puck Head on Aug 8, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its about time Dana expose the TUf noobs to the golden age of mma which was PRIDE FC!. Its hard for me to get my newly-casually converted mma fans to sit down and watch my PRIDE DVD’s, but oncw it airs n spike, they will all watch it and get hooked!

bad news***
The fight between Nck Diaz vs. Heiron is in Jeapordy because Nick Diaz missed his scheduled drug test yesterday. There is a chance Diaz ca take the test monday, but the results needed to clear him to fight probably wont be ready in time!
Fock the CSAC!!! is testing Nick really neccessary? we all know, he gets high everyday, and is good at masking it…so just let him fight!

by john G on Aug 8, 2009 1:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Once you sign on the dotted line, once you get your fighter’s license then you know what obligations you have. It up to Nick to make the fight not the CSAC to bow to Nick because he’s the Golden State’s resident pot head. Its his responsibility once he signed on the dotted line.

by dandeman on Aug 8, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John i gotta agree with dandeman here- f diaz, finally the CSAC is doing it’s shit right and actually busting habitbual roiders and drug users. You all know that i don’t believe there is such a drug that can give fighting abilities but rules are fn rules so yea f diaz for ruining a great and even fight that would have forced both guys to show new creases in their technical games.

by NameNotRequired on Aug 8, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Recreational drugs should be completely eliminated from testing. It is ridiculous. Why don’t they test them for alchohol and tobacco as well (I know the difference is that these substances are legal, but that only furthers the hypocrisy of the test).

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 8, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

GOOD POST jj,

dANDEMAN AND NNR: I wasnt being serious…just being biaased towards not wanting another great fight in the month of august cancelled. This month was an mma nightmare that left me with mma blue ballz! tonights frigin fights better deliver. I am drunk already! lol…if yo want my honest oppinion on this matter its something to the effect of JJ’s post. Marijuana should be eliminated from testing all together. Its just a pointless reason to keep great fights from heppening. who the hel cares if these guys smoke weed on their spare time. I wanr ro see them fight@

by john G on Aug 8, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If it’s all about protecting fighters from themselves, they should test for McDonald’s as well. BJ would never fight again.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 8, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree about the but then there people who say safety first. For example Guillard busted with coke- what if the intensity of the fight causes his bloodpressure to blow out his heart? Same example can possibly be made for roids. I disagree with the performance inhancing aspects of these drugs but i have a hard time going against them from a safety standpoint. Even with that established though you can say that well – weed does nothing to people etc… which would mean CSAC would have to look at all drugs and cherrypick what’s ok and not which i don’t believe they would ever do. So it forces them to do an all or nothing rule that i can understand.

by NameNotRequired on Aug 8, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Guillard OD’s on coke in a fight, that’s his business. A guy could have all kind of congenital ailments that would result in the same thing occuring, that’s whuy they undergo physicals and medical testing. Showing up high on coke to a fight would give the other guy an advantage, and I higly doubt that is happening.

This Big Brother stuff is a slippery slope, and the idea of “safety first” in a sport that features all-out attempts to knock your opponent unconscious seems a little hypocritical as well. Beyond rules, gloves and testing for performance-enhancers, there’s not a helluva lot left to worry about IMO.

cocaine is a hell of a drug

by brendan(formerly a bunch of names that no one cares about) on Aug 8, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If their policy is “safety first” they should just cancel the fight altogether. There is nothing safe about MMA.

Brendan-

I know. It’s really for the best to never learn that firsthand.

All thanks to the UFC. ;)

Japan seems to make people better than they actually are.

Well there are still enough awesome fighters and fights to fill up hours of TV time.

I think they will show Fedor you guy’s? They will put him against Randleman folowed by Cro Cop against Randleman. it will show his fight against Kohsaka… hell they can show all his fights and put up his oppnents career record after just to rub in what kind of quality fighters this guys has piled up. I can totaly see them doing I can see Dana’s grin right now LMFAO.

by Puck Head on Aug 8, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Fedor has exclusive rights to his highlights and fights, but I may be mistaken. Either way, showing Fedor’s fights in an attempt to smear his accomplishments would backfire, because it would show people his talents and what the UFC fan is missing. Dana knows that. They would much prefer to continue pretending he never existed.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 8, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How can it backfire during Pride every MMA fan believed Fedor was the best it wasn’t his fault the quality of HW during that time were brutal. It would show us how the UFC turned MMA into a sport and how much improved and deep the UFC is in talent during that time Pride had the Best HW Fedor, NOG, Cro Cop & Barnett the only fighter the UFC had that was as talented was couture not to many thought Tim was a top HW even though he was the Champ and AA was just up and coming fighter with great strikes that some believed was in the same bracked but was shown to have to many weaknesses before he left the UFC. Cro Cop and NOG put up the only challenges really for Fedor and he and Barnett wouldn’t fight each other I guess you can throw Randleman in there he slammed around Fedor pretty good for a brief time and short fight. A lot of Fans now believe Fedor shouldn’t be the #1 Hw in the world and by showing him getting slammed by Randleman like a rag doll even though Fedor pulled of the submission it would make fans wonder what if that was Carwin or Brock they would destroy him if Randleman was trained better in JJ he might of beat him? Fans are very critical of Fedor and rightfully so if the UFC did it right they could add more fuel to the fire easy.
