UFC Quick Quote: BJ Penn is a little small

"His intensity seemed forced, and he seemed a little small. I am ready to go five five-minute rounds, and we will see tomorrow night if he is ready too. I sacrificed a lot more than B.J. B.J. may have done a lot to get ready for this fight, but I doubt he did more than me. I have dotted all my I’s and crossed all my T’s, I am ready to go."
-- Number one lightweight contender, Kenny Florian, shares his post-UFC 101 weigh-in thoughts with Sherdog.com. "Ken Flo," who looked sucked out himself, contends that the "Prodigy" perhaps did not prepare as much as he did for the lightweight title tilt set for tomorrow night at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Penn has been training in California with strength and conditioning guru, Marv Marinovich, to prepare for the fight. Is this more self motivation from Florian or has Penn not done enough to handle the Bostonian?

I finally put some money down.
Kenny
Silva
Neer
McCrory
I’m not confident about any of it though. I just get weird feelings about this one.

I love the Barncat, but this is a dangerous fight for him.
Neer is a damn good pick!
I hope no one is betting on kendal. His comments yesterday really disturbed me….He is battling a rib injury and his comments made it sound like he already has an excuse prepared for a lackluster performance tonight. If you havent bet money on Kendall yet, I suggest staying away from him!

Kenny is too arrogant.
Shut up and fight dude. BJ is going to own him.
Kenny has been talking so much smack (probably promotional smack, but as we learned with Brock, athletes can’t always tell the difference between promtional smack talk and smack talk).
But Kenny keeps telling us he might finish BJ in round one and all this stuff he has sacrificed BUT it has ALL been in 2 years or less. BJ has worked his skills for a lot longer than 2 years. PLUS BJ has innate talent.
Sorry Kenny. Show time tomorrow.

Kenflo has good kicks and jits. But his punches are weak. He needs to lift weights to build up his upper body Maybe he is he trying to keep his arms skinny so his helbows are razor sharp. His upper body weakness may keep him from beating BJ or Diego. But I would sure like to see him beat both of them.
by DrPepper on Aug 8, 2009 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
his kicks are more powerful than any shot BJ could throw so that’s ok.. Diego would kill both of these guys though 100% sure of that!

My thoughts exactly shamo84.
As for BJ Penn looking small… Ken Flo is looking smaller to me in the weigh-in pictures.

I am really surprised at how small Kenny looks. Where are his muscles? I knew he’s not the biggest lightweight out there but now he looks like the smallest one to ever compete. He’s never gonna be able to control BJ on the ground. As much as I want him to win, it’s not looking good.

by Shadyone33 on Aug 7, 2009 11:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Head games, my friend. He’s trying to instill a sense of doubt in ole’ Coconut-head. And when it comes to “unnecessary comments”, I think BJ wrote the manual. In fact, right after the 94 weigh-ins BJ said the exact same thing to GSP. That he looked small and cut too much weight. It didn’t work for BJ and it won’t work for Kenny either (unfortunately).

CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME A REVIEW ON CHANNELSURFING .NET? HAHA. THANKS
by *PrettyBoy* on Aug 8, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Channelsurfing never worked for me.
Justin.tv is good, but it gets crowded, and somehow Zuffa sends out the hounds and shuts down alot of the streams. If you’re lucky, you can find one that doesn’t get shut down (99 and 96 were good for me), but again, it gets reaaaal crowded and it might lag some.
BUT — after a day or two, there will be one channel that replays the event over the next week or so, so you could just tune in a day late and experience the “free” PPV of UFC 101, instead of finding all the individual fights piece by piece.
To find the MMA channels, there will be a drop tab at the top left side, drop that down and click to sports. When you get there, click on the “All” tab and drop down to “Martial Arts” and theres your MMA channels.

Yeah, Kenny’s obviously trying to get in BJ’s head. If he can, more power to him. I like BJ more as a fighter, but on a character level I can’t stand either of these guys. Florian is so affected and smarmy and Penn is, well, BJ Penn, which is an insult of character almost by itself.

both of these guys deserve to lose. BJ continues to make excuses for getting squashed by GSP, and Kenny has done nothing but trash talk leading up to this fight. if Kenny wins, it gets interesting because he has not avenged his losses to diego or sherk. edger deservs a title shot more than diego btw.
by spitforce on Aug 8, 2009 9:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You do know that Edgar just lost to Maynard a little while ago, right? Edgar would get killed by BJ, where Diego has a legit shot.

I hope kenny pulls it off. Dont forget boys anything can happen in mma. Kennys my favorite LW and i dont see him better than BJ in any one area but ive seen crazier things happen in the octagon.. he definatly has a chance.
by Antdogg1110 on Aug 8, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
antdogg, kennys overall standup, will be better than bj, since standing bj is a one dimentional boxer, who doesnt know how to utalize kicks, elbows, and knees as well as kenny. Also unlike sherk kenny will have a big reach advantage. Just remember the best muay thai practioner, will allways beat the best boxer, when fighting at the same weight. kenny has more weaapons than bj in the standup, and his footwork, timing, and accuracy have evolved to the next level. dont be suprised, if after the first round, this turns into a one sided mismatch. bj grew up as a rich spoiled kid, he is nothing but a bully, and usually what happens is when he is in a fight with someone he is unable to dominate, he mentally quits, which is understandable since he never had to work a day in his life, and evrything has allways been handed to him, and people told him how great he is. he will allways have a poor work ethic, and dedication compared to hungry fighters like kenny.
by dtoto on Aug 8, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the best muay thai practitioner will always beat the best boxer when fighting at the same weight? always? come on, apparently forrest and rashad forgot about that in their fight. so did gsp and alves.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on Aug 8, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There are so many variables. Dtoto is right in the sense that a Muay Thai fighter has so many more weapons at his disposal. But you are correct in the sense that no MMA fighter is a boxer that just got pulled out of a boxing-only gym and thrust into an MMA fight. Even an MMA “boxer” like BJ has an understanding of checking leg kicks and defending the clinch.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 8, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
“dtoto”, i don’t know what you consider a bully, but it’s not someone who chooses to jump UP in weight classes fighting guys with bigger frames and longer reach
(Ex.—Lyoto Machida, Renzo Gracie, Rodrigo Gracie, GSP)
..next..this stigma of bj being a spoiled rich kid..how do you know anything about the guy except what you read on sites like this from opinionated proffesional bloggsters??
Or maybe you watched a ufc countdown or two and consider it to be “the word of God”…
just a few things to ponder over before you make another misleading comment…Did someone give these to the “so called” spoiled rich kid? —
Former UFC Welterweight Champion
Current UFC Lightweight Champion
(only the 2nd fighter ever to capture a championship belt in two seperate weight classes)
oh yeah and one-dimentional standup? i get he likes to throw hands but seriously bj is a little more well rounded than just your typical mma boxer..
din thomas—bj knee to the face—TKO
sean sherk—bj flying knee to the face
leads to—TKO
also just a few of bj’s grappling credentials which i guess were given to him since he’s never worked hard a day in his life? —c’mon dude read up before you believe the all the BS…

2000 Black Belt Pena: 1st Place
1999 Brown Belt Leve: 3rd Place

Misc. stuff:

1997 Joe Moreira tournament – blue belt, 1st place.
1999 Copa Pacific tournament – Gold medal.
And finally last but not least—-you kinda have to work hard just “a lil” to get your black belt in just 3 years.. i mean i guess if i thought like you i could make the assumption that all other bjj black belts are lazy cause it took them 5-10 years to accomplish what he did in 3…
***and i concede the fact that time frames for awarding belts varies with each style, student, & teacher but this analogy only applies in principle to your comments… Look dude i’m not attacking you personally so don’t wigg out on me—and i like both fighters involved in this fight so i’m not trying to be a nut-hugger here—so what if the guy gassed in 2-3 fights against world champs or is too proud to admit defeat when he is dominated because of it—these guys are under a magnifying glass and there is pressure everywhere—what would you do if every dumb thing you wish you never had said was blown up for everyone in the world to pass judgement on??—put yourself in their place for a minute and i can promise you will see things from a different perspective…but for now just educate yourself before you question someones dedication, personality, or work ethic…

How is Kenny calling BJ small when he is skinnier than BJ? Standing Kenny may have a more rounded advantage, but BJ has never taken damage in the stand up. If GSP couldn’t rock him in the stand up and needed it to go to the ground how is Kenny going to hurt him standing. Penn is a great boxer with just enough kicking prowess to off balance Kenny. The main difference here is that BJ has the hands to KO K-Flo. On the ground I don’t think there is much anyone (outside of GSP) can do to BJ. I want to see a great fight but I just don’t think there is anyone in this weight class that can give BJ problems except for Diego or maybe Maynard in a lay-n-pray.

The BJ looking small comments show just how new a lot of these MMA fans really are.
BJ is notorious for under training, looking/being out of shape, and gassing after the first round or two… Any of you newbs that want to see a small BJ, go back to his 2001-2003 fights, say against Uno, Gomi, or Hughes 1. Bj was tiny, and he MASSACRED everyone in his path. No my friends if anything you should see BJ now and be SPRINTING to your bookie to lay down cash on his ass whoopin of Kenny. BJ is in the best shape he has been in in years, it seems the spanking he got from St Piere lit a fire, good, hopefully it humbled him a bit too. BJ will own Kenny, I just put down $1500 on it.
A motovated BJ is to lightweights what St Piere is to Welterweights. Best in the world hands down.
by Sheeves on Aug 8, 2009 4:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think BJ is the best in the world at 155 until someone proves otherwise.
That being said, this statement you just made-
“A motovated BJ is to lightweights what St Piere is to Welterweights. Best in the world hands down.”
-is utter horseshit. GSP has PROVEN beyond any doubt he is hands down the best in the world at his weight class (by beating a lengthy who’s who of the WW division in dominating fashion), and BJ hasn’t. He doesn’t get GSP-level P4P status based on what we THINK he can do at 155.
