ya but he’s never been a really big 155- I must admit though Bj looks in fantasic shape- Kenny by UD he ain’t gonna quit… i wonder if GSP is gonna be in the audience to support kenny…. Andy for TKO by whatever he wants

BJ needs to come forward right away, keep his defense tight and throw hard leather! I don’t think Kenny has that good of a chin. However i think Kenny’s gonna win!
Anderson vs Forrest can only go one way, Anderson is a born fighter Forrest is not! He doesn’t have it in him.

LOL. So many people think Kenny is going to win on these MMA sites.
Vegas opened BJ at -150 and he moved up to -250 because too many pros were taking BJ with nice profits at -150.
Out of the 20+ pros on ESPN, I think 14 chose BJ and 6 Kenny.
Kenny has a shot but he isn’t really better than Penn at… ANYTHING. Maybe kicking but BJ doesn’t kick, so that is a given.

the game ain’t just about skill, it’s about being an athlete and having your head in the right place..
BJ’s a bad athlete and he’s weak mentally..
by RoBerto on Aug 7, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Why is this? Because of a fight with GSP or his comments outside of the ring.
I don’t think we really have any proof that BJ is mentally weak.

On a side note, today I was trying to estimate how many times I ’ve heard Kenny Florian say:

I’m guess 1500 times.
I WANT BJ’S BELT!

I’ve never seen him come back in a fight that he’s losing.. he just doesn’t seem to be as motivated as he should be, and that goes for his training and everything!

The pro’s on ESPN was actually interviews conducted by Sherdog, reposted by ESPN with permission of course. Including fighters holding belts in other organizations and fighters that have fought for the belt in the UFC. Also mma journalist. It was 20 Penn, 6 Kenny. I actually didn’t give Penn his due.
Plus BJ is a huge favorite in vegas. Vegas isn’t always right, but they are good at picking winners. BJ -250.

hahahahahah LMAO. BJ is going to CAVE Kenny’s chest in! I have been called BIased for my picks, but you guys are a joke. There is no way in hell that the majority of the people on this site should be picking Kenny, and thats exactly what’s happening. YOu fools dont like a few things that come out of his mouth, and saw him get dominated by the best welterweight in the world AND top 5 p4p fighter, and now you all forgot why he is undoubtedly the best lightweight on the planet! Wake the Fock up!
I know mma math doesnt add up, but this is a much better versoin of the BJ Penn that went the distance with the lHW champion, Lyot Machida! THere isnt another lightweight on earth that couldsurvive 15 minutes against Machida and make it competitive! do youo people have any idea what would happen to Kenny if he steps into the Octagon with Machida or GSP? The UC would have its 1st DEATHH in the octagon! It wouldnt even be funny! Yet, because people dont like BJ “the person”, BJ “the fighter” has been written off! Get a clue you Biased Nincompoops!
YOu fools have any idea how valuable leaving Hawaii and secretly training in Cali will be for BJ? Did you see the weigh ins? BJ looks phenomenal!
NO distractions + training with Marv + BJ’s skills, DIVIDED by Kenny’s bird chest = Kenny getting demolished!
Kenny is going to get Jabbed to death and everytime he throws a kick, he will eAT a left straight! THere is no doubt in my mind that Kenny has never been hit as hard as bj will hit him.
im also sick of hearing about how the 2 p4p kings, BJ and Anderson are going to lose because of leg kicks! Get a clue, both BJ and especially Anderson are MaSTERful at checking leg kicks. Do you really think Anderson and his world class muy Tai wont be prepared for Forrest’s leg kicks? Give me a break! Anderson was throwing and checking leg kicks when Forrest didnt know that you are supposed to kick with your shin instead of the instep on your foot! lmao hAHAHAHAAH! Kicks are basically Forrest’s only real weapon besides his intangibles like Heart and size…do you really think Anderson wont gameplan for Forrest’s only legit strike?
do you reay think that bJ hasnt been gameplanning foor Kenny’s kicks?
Get real…if you guys are going to pick upsets in the 2 headlining fights, you are more than entitled. its mma and upset are always possible regardess of how great the favorite is…I just ask that you come up with something better than basic leg kicks.

by Julian on Aug 7, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions
settle down Johnny G.
I think most people here have BJ. There is just a vocal minority that supports Kenny.
Kenny couldn’t do half the things BJ does. Even if Kenny were to win one, I think BJ goes 8 of 10 against Kenny.
There is always a chance of winning.
Hell I think BJ goes 2 of 10 against GSP.
by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 8, 2009 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah settle down, how in the hell could u call him “undoubtebly” the best lightweight in the world? All the BJ hype has gotten into your head big time! beating Jens Pulver, Joe Daddy and 5’6 Sherk in a standup match shows me nothing! Roger Huerta would have dominated those three fights too, and mos def Kenny..
BJ got the crap kicked out of him against GSP and once he’s starting to lose this one he’s gonna be over!.. you don’t just forget beatings like that
by RoBerto on Aug 8, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ll be supporting Flo, but I know BJ will probably win. I think most others are the same, except people without logic. There is nothing you can do to help those people, why waste your time? That said I will LOL if I get to see BJ quit again, man that was sweet last time. Oh, and BJ should never be mentioned in P4P talks ever again.

Maybe you should ask this question to a certain Mr Emelianenko
by Ground St Pound on Aug 7, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah that is crazy shamo84.. It’s not like it’s hard to get abs, you can get it in a couple of weeks!
by RoBerto on Aug 7, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Not everyone has the genetics to get abs easily.
Just like Kenny doesn’t have the genetics to have huge shoulders and biceps.
BJ, no matter how hard he trains, is going to carry a certain body fat percentage. He is in shape and well conditioned though even without the abs.
by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 7, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions
BJ used to have abs, and he could still have them. It is easier for some than others, and it gets harder asd you age, but unless you have an extremely rare metabolic disorder that seems to be afflicting 80% of the United States, you can have abs. Really, when you’re a professional fighter who has to make weight you should have defined abdominals. Otherwise you’re wasting the opportunity to have a couple extra pounds of muscle.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I think kenny has decided to not cut much weight at all, that’s why he is so small, he will probably be around 160 on fight time.
or he has got heavy bones.
by shamo84 on Aug 7, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I believe BJ is in great shape and if he were the type of guy who had abs then he would have them now.
Because of his age and his body type, he doesn’t.
This doesn’t mean he isn’t strong or in good shape. I’m not a Fedor fan but let me use this example.
If you let me take a punch from Andre Arlovski who looks like the baddest dude on the planet or Fedor, I would pick Andre. And Andre weighs more and has less body fat.
Also look at Forrest Griffin. I would rather take a strike from Forrest than Silva, and Forrest looks cut up and shredded while Silva looks ok.
If we ask the women to chose winners they would pick Andre and whoever is fighting against BJ, but students of the sport have more intuition than “a fighter’s looks”
by Jerry Jackson is my hero on Aug 7, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, and Tyson was shredded and was probably the hardest puncher ever. It’s a pointless comparison. Striking power has nothing to do with body fat percentage, it mostly has to do with technique. Silva and Fedor would hit just as hard if they had a six-pack, and they’d have more room for muscle in other areas.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed JJ, BJ used to have abs albeit earlier in his career. He just doesn’t train hard enough to get them. I do understand that some guys naturally have the physique and it is easier for them to get ripped, but it is possible to get them no matter who you are. His body fat percentage is just too high. And Jerry punching power is about technique and core strength…and BJ has very little power IMO.
by Jake on Aug 7, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
one of the guys i was in the marines with had a similar look bodywise to bj’s. he had a gut. dude ran 3 miles in 16 mins 30 secs and could do 130 situps in 2 mins. he was one of the strongest guys for his size, he just didn’t look it. on the other hand we had some buff mofo’s that looked like they were chiseled from stone, and alot of them could barely make 3 miles in 24 mins or even 75 situps in two mins. strengthwise and endurance wise looks can be very decieving.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on Aug 7, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Karo Parisyan’s name has to be mentioned when we’re talking about pro athletes not having abs… I wonder how good he would have been if he stopped eating at McDonalds 7 days a week and actually trained!..
He’d be at LW if he trained hard

Karo is definitely a natural lightweight.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks buttcrack obama.
Exactly, body fat doesn’t mean anything. Certain people have genetics that allow them to be shredded and BJ isn’t one of those guys.
BJ is training hard and he is in great shape, abs don’t matter.

You guys can say body fat doesn’t mean anything and that you know some guy who’s really fast that has a gut, but the last time I checked the sprinters in the Olympics don’t have an olunce of fat on them.
Yes, there are guys who are gifted athletes that have fat and there are guys that are ripped who really aren’t very impressive at all. But the fact remains that, at the pinnacle of athletic competion, (and MMA is very much becoming an athlete’s sport) not having the best possiblt physique for your body type means that you are not maximizing your potential.

Kenny always looks like this at LW. He’s tall for a 155’er, and he’s totally dried out for the weigh-in.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions
kenny is tall? he is only 5.9, if u are 6 feet u are tall for a 155er
by shamo84 on Aug 7, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s 5’10. And yes, 5’10 is tall for a 155’er, that is GSP’s height. Just because there are guys taller doesn’t mean 5’10 is well above average. At 6’0 you can forget about having any significant strength at 155.
Let’s look at the top UFC LWs: Sherk, BJ, Stevenson, Griffin, Edgar, Guida, Huerta, Maynard. All under 5’10. Diego is 5’11 and looks emaciated at 155 as well. Thanks for trying though.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Joe Laozon: 5’10. Also clearly taller than the average 155’er.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions
And keep in mind that one inch usually amounts to about ten pounds more body weight on a grown man. So one or two inches makes a big difference when you’re tring to get down to the 155 range.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 7, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions
if u used your head insted of reading the statistic u would have noticed by now that kenny isn’t really 5.10 like everybody knows the ufc lists him at.
Thanks for trying though.
by shamo84 on Aug 7, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s the best you’ve got, Mr. Einstein? Well I suppose BJ isn’t really 5’9 then, either. See how Kenny is one inch taller than him in that picture? It’s also amazing to me how you are privy to the heights of fighters and yet every official listing is wrong.
Tell you what: this is how big boys argue. Instead of offering baseless and silly claims about knowing something all official sources don’t, go and find me one shred of plausible evidence that supports your claim of Kenny’s height.
And keep in mind that even if you DID return with this nonexistent evidence, it would then stand to reason that we could drop an inch off ALL OTHER LW FIGHTERS AS WELL. Which would still make me 100% right, and it make you… well, we all know what that would make you.

by buttcrack obama bin laden on Aug 7, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions
No, I don’t mean total height, buttcrack. I mean once you get over the 5’ foot mark, you can exoect a ten pound increase per extra inch of height. It’s one of the ways you measure ideal body weight as a trainer. If two guys are of a similar build and body fat percentage, you can expect the 5’11 guy to be roughly 10 pounds heavier than the 5’10 guy. it takes into account that the taller guy is probably a little bigger all over, which will make him ten pounds heavier. I should have explained the formula better.

Jay, It’s pretty easy to see that repeatedly losing debates where I have never insulted you has affected your self-esteem. I’m sorry that your primary source of self-worth stems from this site.
And if by “all hours” you mean a nine-hour period between 11am and 8pm pacific time, then yeah, guilty as charged. I am recovering from a badly broken arm and most of my work-day currently takes place in front of a computer. And when I’m at work, no, I don’t have anything better to do. Don’t fret, when I can get back to my regular duties I will be here a lot less. I am merely trying to raise the collective intelligence of the site just a tad, and I try to contribute to the site in my own unique (if arrogant and cruel) way – if you don’t like it I could care less. In fact, your feeble protestations encourage me that I’m on the right track. Your contributions, quite frankly, are nothing to write home about.
Some of the kids on this site like to make claims they can’t back up (sound familiar, Jay? It should). I am trying to teach them a thing or two about scientific method and how to present an argument in an entertaining but sound fashion. You should be taking notes. If, in the process, someone’s feelings get hurt – well, that’s collateral damage mate. I accept that eventuality. In the long run you guys will thank me for meaking you more informed individuals and better internet debaters.
Yours truly,

Wow Kenny looks so small, I don’t even think he got a punchers chance. BJ will break his ribcage with the first body punch.

I guarantee u guys that Forrest will beat Anderson Silva and put an end to all this P4P No.1 nonsense – Silva is a great fighter but he’s NOT the greatest. Forrest will outwork him and win a UD.
by jayshogun on Aug 7, 2009 7:20 PM EDT reply actions
A win for Forrest doesn’t take Silva out of the P4P talks, IMO. He is a MW fighter, this is an exhibition match really. If GSP decides to go to MW and loses that doesn’t effect his ranking so why would this change Silva’s?
by jay on Aug 8, 2009 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions
The only reason everyone is so shocked is because the only reports we would ever get about Penn were either him goofing off with other fighters or stuff like hanging in the hot tub. This gave everyone the impression he wasn’t training for this fight.

Kenflo and Forrest all the way. Silva was a nobody in pride and all these guys are
scarred to put it to him. Don’t get me wrong he’s a good fighter but alot is the fighters just
give him to much respect
by Cesar on Aug 7, 2009 7:44 PM EDT reply actions
have you actually watched his fights? it’s hard not to give a man respect when he’s peeling the skin from your face with his strikes. hendo was a monster in pride and i’ll guarantee you he ain’t afraid to put it on anyone. neither is nate, rich, or most any fighter in mw.

WAR BJ!!

He looks soooooo much better because he is 10-15 pounds lighter (I think he weighed 168 for GSP fight)…He looks the same as he did for his last 155 fight. Look at BJ 5 years ago…he was in great shape then.

Did anyone catch the Q&A with Dana in Philly? Wow, these fans are intelligent…im impressed. Good knowledge of the sport. I’m sad to say, I attended the Dana White Q&A in Montreal Serra-GSP, and the fans did nothin but kiss Dana’s ass and ask for his autograph. I like the question about Brock, about keeping respect in the sport, Dana kinda dodged it. I just hope they’ll keep impressing me and not boo when someone doesn’t punch.

Bj is def. gonna win this one…it’s crazy how so many people believe the hype that Kenny has a good chance. Kenny is so small, when Penn is the bigger, stronger man…he really can’t be beaten.

Is B.J. Penn misunderstood?

PHILADELPHIA – B.J. Penn’s not a bad guy, though he plays one on TV.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s fabulously talented lightweight titleholder is also its biggest enigma. Some see him as a spoiled rich kid who speaks before he thinks and pouts if he doesn’t get his way, but Penn insists that’s a description of him spoken by a person who doesn’t know him.
He wasn’t happy with the way he was portrayed on the UFC "Primetime" series on Spike TV that was broadcast prior to his January welterweight title fight at UFC 94 in Las Vegas against Georges St. Pierre.

He’s also begun to voice his displeasure with several mixed martial arts websites and blogs that he believes haven’t been fair to him over the years.
J.D. Penn, B.J.’s brother and manager, said the show wouldn’t work unless there was a good guy and a bad guy.
"You had St. Pierre, so they took B.J. and made him look like the bad guy," he said. "It was like in boxing what they did with (Oscar) De La Hoya and (Floyd) Mayweather Jr. They needed that. B.J. is more vocal, he’s around town, he talks to kids, he does a lot of stuff.
"They made it look like he wasn’t training and isn’t dedicated to the sport. And they didn’t show the good things that B.J. does. They didn’t show him going to schools, talking to kids, signing autographs and doing whatever he can to promote the sport. They just grabbed onto the fact he wasn’t training, in their perception, as hard as he should be. And they decided to focus on that and not show all the other things good he does. That was a way to get the good guy against the bad guy thing they needed."
The spoiled rich kid theme is one that arose again after Penn filed a complaint with the Nevada Athletic Commission following his one-sided loss to St. Pierre, alleging that St. Pierre was greasing.
Penn’s mother testified on his behalf, though the commission took no action. Penn was ridiculed by many fans as a spoiled rich kid who needs his mother to fight his battles for him, but Penn doesn’t get it.
"Where does that come from?" Penn asked incredulously. "I’ve heard that a lot, but I don’t understand it. Do people talk about Kenny Florian coming from a wealthy family and all this? I don’t think they do. People say these things about me when they don’t even know me."
Penn, who will defend his title against Florian on Saturday at the Wachovia Center in the main event of UFC 101, says what he believes despite the consequences. He understands that his willingness to answer any question is going to rankle many, but he’s long since passed the stage of worrying about it.
"You can’t make everyone happy no matter what," Penn said. "All I can do is live my life and try to be successful and please myself. I have my own morals I live by. Bill Cosby once said, ‘I don’t know the key to success but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.’ I agree with that. I live my life my way. I try to do the right thing, but I know there are going to be people who aren’t happy with what I do or say no matter what, so I’m not going to worry about it."
Penn is one of the few fighters who is blunt and doesn’t dodge a direct question. In a sport where many of his peers give politically correct answers and stray far away from controversial topics, Penn freely dives in with no hesitation.
Penn said he believes St. Pierre uses steroids, though he concedes he has no proof. St. Pierre is arguably the sport’s most popular fighter and Penn knows that making such allegations isn’t going to win him any friends.
Penn, though, isn’t the type to be shy about offering his opinion though it may be unpopular.
"It’s just my opinion that he uses steroids," Penn said. "That’s it. My opinion. I do believe it. I can’t hand you any proof, but that’s my opinion."
In an earlier conversation on the topic, Penn said, "In my opinion, he doesn’t play by the rules when it comes to steroids and growth hormones and that stuff. Look at him. He’s the worst. He looks like that every day. That’s cheating. There is a reason why there are rules against using steroids. The rest of us, we get fat, then we train and get skinny and the cycle goes over and over again. He looks the same way all the time. Come on."
St. Pierre’s manager, Shari Spencer, scoffed at the suggestion and said she would not dignify it with a response, though she denied St. Pierre is a steroid user.
Greg Jackson, one of St. Pierre’s trainers, laughed at the thought.
"Georges is a phenomenal athlete and he’s such an honorable guy, if he felt he cheated, even inadvertently, it would drive him crazy and he wouldn’t be able to sleep," Jackson said.
Raffi Nahabedian, a Las Vegas attorney who has represented Penn since 2005 on several issues, including the greasing controversy, called Penn "one of the more remarkable men I’ve met in my life."
Penn has had prefight issues with several fighters, including Sean Sherk about steroids and Florian about whether or not he tipped Penn off to the fact that St. Pierre is a greaser.
Nahabedian said Penn knew that by pushing the greasing allegations and forcing the commission to hold a hearing, he’d open himself to scorn and ridicule, but he was undeterred.
"We had conversations about public perception," Nahabedian said. "And as we’ve expressed publicly, B.J. has such a strong conviction about his values that he was willing to sacrifice those fans who don’t appreciate his cause. It’s not that he doesn’t want those fans. In his mind, though, he’s saying, ‘What kind of fans are these who would rally behind me if they don’t believe the sport should be completely clean and devoid of any unfair advantage?’ He’s amazing because he believes so strongly and is willing to go forward with something when he believes it’s the right thing to do even if he knows there are going to be consequences."
Penn knows there are going to be consequences if he doesn’t perform against Florian, who has won six in a row since losing a previous title shot to Sherk in 2006.
Penn hired strength and conditioning guru Marv Marinovich and believes he’s in far better condition than he’s ever been.
And coming off a loss, he sounded like former President Clinton after he lost control of Congress during the midterm elections in 1994.
"I’m the lightweight champion of the world and I’m definitely still relevant," Penn said. "I’m very hungry and I’m ready and willing to fight anyone. All this talk and all this other stuff, none of that matters now. This is a fight. We’re going to walk into the cage and they’re going to close the door and then, that’s all that is going to matter. And I’m ready for a fight.
"Really ready."

Roberto you gotta be joking bj is not an athlete. How man people can pick both there legs up put them behind there head without using there arms. Plus winning the Brazil championships, attaining a black belt faster than any American. Must of been just luck…

There are female yoga instructors who can do that. Saw a chick in a dirty movie do it last night. ;-)
BJ’s a decent athlete, but in terms of bigger/faster/stronger and good cardio, he’s not that impressive. He’s not going to run an impressive ‘40 or make you gasp with disbelief at his vertical jump (although the pool thing was cool). He has great reflexes and flexibility, is VERY talented at BJJ, and he is tough with heavy hands, but those aren’t natural athletic attributes. I think that’s what RoB meant.
