Vadim Finkelchtein: Brock Lesnar is a product of 'The great hype machine'

Strikeforce and M1-Global today held a press conference to discuss their recent partnership that includes the signing of Fedor Emelianenko, as well as their intention to co-promote future events.
On the call were Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, M-1 President Vadim Finkelchtein, Showtime executive Ken Hershman and of course newly-signed heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko.
While no details were announced surrounding a possible opponent or precise event date for "The Last Emperor's" debut (still fall 2009), the call instead focused on introducing Fedor to a new Showtime audience, as well as the partnership between Strikeforce and M-1.
Below are some notes and quotes from the M-1 Global/Strikeforce press conference:
Scott Coker: Feels like he won the lottery with the signing of Fedor Emelianenko. Doesn't yet have an opponent or event date for their new acquisition.
"Dana White is a promoter and will say what he's going to say, but we've been in business a long time and look forward to putting some on big shows with Fedor."
The Fedor deal went down so fast he is still running to catch up.
Alistair Overeem should be ready to fight in the fall.
Pay-per-view model is still 6-9 months away.
Fighting is their core business and they don't anticipate going anywhere.
Scott Coker dropped from the call. Fedor can be heard giggling in the background.
Has considered holding a Grand Prix Tournament but has no current plans to do so.
Vadim Finkelchtein: UFC wouldn't let Fedor fight anywhere except the UFC and that was unreasonable. They presented "nothing special" in their offer.
Wants to know if a 4-1 Brock Lesnar is the best heavyweight in the world or the product of "The great hype machine."
(via M-1 attorney) UFC tries to stop the fight between Mousasi and Sobral in Strikeforce, but Mousasi already signed on for the fight and will honor that commitment.
Question about recent "Breakthrough" event is rejected as inappropriate for this call.
Vadim is missing from the call. Dogs can be heard barking in the background.
Fedor Emelianenko: Doesn't know his opponent yet, but looks forward to fighting whoever they give him. Would like to progress MMA and earn some money and can do both with Strikeforce.
Dana White is wrong about him ducking the best fighters in the world. Considers his last two fights to be against difficult opponents.
Insists he has full control over his contract and finances related to fighting under M-1.
Does not like the way UFC treats fighters, says they do not treat them like human beings.
Calls UFC offer "terrible."
Ken Hershman: In the planning stages now of how to market Fedor beyond the hardcore fan base and into the mainstream. Recognizes it's a big task but looks forward to it.
Stay tuned in the coming days as more details are announced surrounding the signing of Fedor Emelianenko and a future opponent and event date.

No, this d-bag never gets to talk about the UFC and its fighters… he had his chance to come over and prove that Fedor is the best, and he chickened out! This just proves even more that that is the reason Fedor isn’t inthe UFC, so he can sit back and talk trash knowing he never will have to fight Brock!

Now they’re sayin “Fedor would only be allowed to fight in the UFC and thats unreasonable.”
So no co promotion is unreasonable, then Fedor not being able to jump ship and fight wherever he wants to is unreasonable. Being offered a boat load of money apparently is unreasonable as well. Who’s making concessions here?? Not M-1 for damn sure.

Fedor’s management team is a bunch of f*cking p*ssys, their only looking out for themselves because they know if Fedor comes to UFC and loses to Brock Lesnar, the Hype machine that is Fedor, will be over and they will not be able to profit off the Fedor name anymore. Keep protecting Fedor and feeding him B level fighters.

I’m now officially off the Fedor bandwagon, if it wasn’t bad enough that he let down the fans by thinking of M-1 first but here he admits that he only signed for the money, criticised what sounded like a fantastic contract and made inappropriate remarks about how the UFC treats its fighters. His comments are similar to the infamous “slave” rant from Cristiano Ronaldo last year.
I’m a Strikeforce supporter but I can’t stand M-1, they are a bunch of greedy, crooked Russians who want something for nothing. Fedor can fight nobodies around the world for all I care, he is a great talent but doesn’t seem to care about anything other than making money these days and considering that he dismissed an offer that is worth more than any of us will ever make as “terrible”, he has no respect for the fans and is clearly deluded about how much money he is worth. I’m not interested in making him or his fat cat Russian friends any richer. Hopefully Grim or Alistair will KO him.

You sign somewhere else for less and then start talking about how Brock is all hype?

OK. So you get offered more and better than anyone in the history of the UFC yet they treat you horrible. So everyone else is being treated SUPER horribly?
GSP happy, BJ happy, Tito happy, Silva happy, Forrest happy.
I guess they are all confused. Yet Fedor was offered more and he was treated poorly?

Strikeforces lacks the talent to ask people to pay to watch their shows. I am not paying $50 to watch Fedor fight some can. All of their divisions are thin except lightweight but its not much better. They have one good fighter in each division and pretty much any matchup they make is onesided and not worth paying for.

I really have a strong feeling he will fight Brett Roggers and the grim will bum rush him and get a KO I know its a long shot but I have a strong feeling its gonna happen than Dana will say how he was never that good and stuff like that, dawm I really wanted to see Fedor vs Brock The grim is ok too but besides that match theres no one else I would like to see him fight

If Scott Coker plans to “build up” to a Fedor vs. Overeem fight it will be the theoretical “kiss of death.” I would assume that Brett Rogers would be one of these “build up” fights and if that is the case look for Fedor to get KTFO. This is not the WWE. In MMA they need to put the best against the best while they are the best.
by Mike on Aug 6, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
That would be the perfect scenario for me, though I have confidence in SF and I’m sure that they would build up Grim, having KO wins over AA and Fedor on Showtime would make him a huge star.

Arlovski’s biggest wins are against Big Poopy and Roy Nelson. And he was cut from the UFC. Big Poopy’s best wins were over Arlovski, and he has lost 4 of his last 5 fights and was also cut from the UFC. Those are hardly quality wins.
And the last three guys Lesnar has fought, including two world champions, have all been better than anyone Fedor has fought in the last 4 years.

by Reservoirdog119 on Aug 6, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions
If he’s such a hype why’d your boy Fedor decide to puss out of the UFC??? They’ve got the best competition in the world, yet Fedor isn’t signed there. Seems to me he know’s he’d come in and get beat. All bullsh*t aside(business), Fedor SHOULD want to fight the best in the world. If they couldn’t meet in the middle somewhere and make an agreement, I just think it comes down to Fedor not wanting to come to the UFC and lose.

Well everytime I read an interview they got a new reason as to why he’s not in the UFC. If I start puttin it all together it reads something like

This right here. I currently buy every UFC PPV, because we enjoy having poeple over and making an event out of it, and we can afford to do that once a month. As soon as there is like 2 or 3 PPVs a month, that’s basically forcing me to choose the ones I’m going to buy. If the card isn’t fantastic, I’ll pass to save some money.
I imagine that a lot of other people are in the same boat, so if Strikeforce goes PPV and their card isn’t as good as a UFC card the same month… well, they are going to lose money.

Be ready to see guys like Wand, Hughes or Alves and maybe even guys from the 101 or 102 card! I’m sure it won’t be a card as bad than the last one!

Anyone who can make ground beef out of Frank Mir’s face like he did is not “hyped up.” Lesnar is a beast and a serious threat in the heavy weight division, and it’s time to give credit where credit is due. I think a PPV model and a first round TKO at the hand of Brett Rogers would both expedite the inevitable Strikeforce demise…I hope Brett Rogers KO’s him on their first ever PPV. Then Dana White will only let Fedor in the UFC through TUF, LOL….TUF 15 staring The Last Emperor!
by KillaC on Aug 6, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions
Yes Marcio Cruz and Ian Freeman, who both turned Mirs face into ground beef are also both world class talents. Not to mention Brandon Vera who lost to Jardine, also beat Frank like a child.
Don’t jump on the hype train yet, wait for Brock to fight more people and see him in more diverse situations than dry humping people while punching them in the face.
He looked incredibly awkward in the fence clinch with Couture and he outweighs Couture by 50 pounds.
by DirtyML on Aug 6, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you there. I thought Randy really controlled him well up against the fence. If you can wrestle and know how the use the cage you can beat Brock… Randy was just too small. You gotta be at least 240

And don’t forget Mir stunned him with that jumping knee. Brock still got the takedown, but he took a couple of steps back. His standup is still far from being good. He’s got great reach/power, but he’s got a long way to go on his feet. That’s why I think Carwin can beat Brock. He’s a wrestler who’s almost as big with better striking
by Bob on Aug 6, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions
dude just look up gonzaga vs couture……thats ho0w randy fights, dirty boxing …and in defence of frank all those fights were after the accsident when he wasnt the fighter he is today
by JG on Aug 6, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I know that’s how Randy fights, but it shows that a guy who is undersized can still give him trouble.
And the Ian Freeman fight was not after his accident, if you did any research at all before replying.
The Marcio Cruz fight was his first fight back after his accident, which he lost after taking the belt from Tim Sylvia. So I guess he can use that excuse there.
Either way, Frank Mir is not a good example for Brocks prowess in the ring.

I hate Brock just as much as the next guy, but in the past year, he has beaten a semi-respectable Heath Hearring, an old but dangerous champion in Randy Couture, and the best Frank Mir that we’ve ever seen. Brock is literally fighting anyone they put in front of him, and continues to dissapoint his haters (me included) by pulling off dominant wins.
Fedor on the otherhand is coming off back-to-back wins against a couple of UFC rejects/has-beens. Both were disposed of rather fashionably, yet, he doesn’t seem interested in stepping up to the plate and squashing what his management dubbed as “a hype machine.”
But whatever… I still hope he puts on some killer fights for Strikeforce, but I could already tell that Team Fedor isn’t interested in proving their reign over the MMA world…

Brock is good but not the best. I still believe Fedor is the best heavyweight in the world. The belt doesn’t seem to mean anything anymore especially if you get to fight for it having a 2-1 record. While other contenders have 4 fight win streaks and lose 1 fight and fall down the ladder.
I will consider Brock #1 once he defends the belt atleast 3 times. Then I will shut my mouth but until then Fedor is #1.
Fedor is 30-1. His only loss was to Tsuyoshi Kohsaka in 2000 which was a cut stoppage.
by skelow on Aug 6, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions
The only reason he got the “loss” is because it was a tournament and he could not continue. Otherwise it would be a NC.
Brock was given the title shot strictly for marketing and PPV reasons, but since then he’s proven that he’s got some serious skills to go along with the strength. However, beating a gatekeeper in HH, a Korean who had no business being in an MMA ring, and a 46 year old LHW is no reason to claim him as the best. But the Mir fight was a great win and really opened my eyes. I really want to see Brock vs Carwin. (of course I want to see Brock get KTFO)

Remember a few years ago when a guy by the name of Tuffy Rhodes was bashing the hell out of the baseball in Japan, and threatening to break Oh’s all-time record? Nice for him, but it’s not all that incredible because he didn’t do it over here against top-flight talent. M-1 = Brett Rogers hype machine.
M-1 = Masters of MMA math.
Vadim Finkelstein, M-1 Global’s president, also had some stern words for the White and the UFC.
"I wonder whom does Dana White considers to be the best fighters? The fighters that have 4-1 records?" asked Finkelstein, referring to UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. "Maybe this is the fighter which became the product of the great PR machine of the UFC. Brett Rogers is a much better opponent for Fedor and also should be very interesting for fans as well, because he has 10 fights and not one loss." OMG! Give me a break…does he REALLY believe that??? He must think MMA fans are stoooopid.
“If the fans want to see a Brock Lesnar fight, hey, all they have to do is keep pressure on Dana,” Millen said. "Do a co-promotion. They do it in boxing every day. – maybe NOT following boxing is why UFC is doing well.

Why do Fedor fans bring up that his one lose was a ref stoppage due to a cut????
Lots of fighters have a loss due to a ref stoppage, you never hear them making excuses.
A loss is a loss

who’s this alistair overWHO??? oh that’s right he’s the guy who lost to nogeara twice, chuck liddell and werdum. He was the guy who tried to take on the ufc fighters but gets knocked out in the first round. I guess someone has to be a champion of a second banana fighting league. Hey if fedor fights him and wins that means he will be king of the shit pile right! People don’t get hiked up about a peice of crap league who has two girls fighting as their main event. I know that strikefArce will crash and crumble were they stand. Dana white sit back on your lawn chair with a beer and enjoy the show cause its gonna be funny!
