Wilson Gouveia vs Ed Herman in the works for UFC 102 with James Irvin scratched

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 season finalist Ed Herman (15-7) has agreed to replace the injured James Irvin opposite Wilson Gouveia (12-6) at UFC 102 from the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., on Aug. 29, according to Sherdog.com.

Bout agreements have not been signed; however, if and when they are it will mark the third opponent for American Top Team (ATT) standout. Chael Sonnen was pulled to take on Dan Miller at UFC 98 on short notice and "Sandman" recently blew out his knee.

Herman is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Canadian fighter David Loiseau at UFC 97 in April, which turned out to be a "loser leaves town" match. Prior to that, "Short Fuse" had lost two in a row to Alan Belcher (via split decision) and Demian Maia (via triangle choke).

He was supposed to return against Aaron Simpson at UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16 before getting the call to replace Irvin. Herman will most likely be unable to keep that date, but nothing is official at this time.

Since making his debut at TUF 3 Finale — a losing performance that still earned him a six-figure contract with the promotion — the Pacific Northwest native has racked up a total of four wins and four losses inside the Octagon.

Star-divide

Gouveia (12-6) is coming off a disappointing loss – Nate Marquardt went bananas on him in the third round of their fight at UFC 95, unleashing a sensational barrage of strikes from all different angles for which he had no answer.

He notched a submission win (armbar) over late replacement Ryan Jensen at UFC Fight Night 15 in his divisional debut back in September. He also smashed Jason MacDonald with vicious elbows at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 Finale to score an impressive first round technical knockout in Dec. 2008.

This will mark the fourth fight for Gouveia at middleweight. And with losses to top division players such as Marquardt and Goran Reljic, he will need to prove that he he has what it takes to be successful at 185 pounds when he collides with Herman later this month.

UFC 102 will feature a main event between former champion Randy "The Natural" Couture battling former Pride FC champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira in a dream match up between two legendary mixed martial arts competitors.

Perennial light heavyweight contender Keith Jardine is also slated to throw down in a 205-pound slugfest against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva on the televised PPV portion of the card, as well as a possible number one middleweight title contender eliminator match between Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt.

I think it will be a good fight for Ed.. He will step up vs. Gouveia. And then what will you say. (I hope I am not wrong)..!!.

I hope Wilson knocks Herman out of the UFC.

by rockwell on Aug 5, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think so.

Should be a pretty easy win for Wilson if his head is in the game 100%. Herman go zero standup to offer Wilson. He will get dominated standing. HErman’s wrestling should be able to get the larger Wilson to the ground, but Wilson has high level BJJ and we know that submitting Ed Herman is possible.

My money will be wagered on Willy G for this fight.

Short Fuse is going to change his name to Short Stay. He’s gone after Willy gets doen with his stepchild ass.

IMO, Wilson would have knocked out all three of his opponents (although Chael woulda LNP for 3 rounds). Willy~G FTW.

by Synyster on Aug 5, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Willy G has no heart,I think Herman will get the TKO.IMO

by NM on Aug 5, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

may have no heart but he has a hell of a punch

I like Ed Herman. I had him picked to win tuf 3. I hope he takes this one. It will be a tough fight thats for sure. If he wins that will be a good win for his record.

by markg on Aug 5, 2009 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Herman is getting KTFO

by nelson on Aug 5, 2009 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

Yup, easy win first round KO… possibly K.O.O.T.N.

by JonnyBoy on Aug 5, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

what he said.

by warwagonmma on Aug 6, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Irvin was a much better match up. I think Gouveia will walk through him.

by ducknow on Aug 5, 2009 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

Rooting for Herman in this one, but all you people who are saying he is getting KO’ed should know that he has NEVER been (T)KO’ed. Sure Herman is super excited about being able to be on the Portland card.

Dont think Herman will be able to submit Wilson, but I do think Herman will outwork Willy G to a UD.

I hope your rights.

Has herman been knocked out?

I think herman pulls through somehow, he’s had some bad luck but nobody thought he’d beat the crow

by phenomenal angel on Aug 6, 2009 12:56 AM EDT reply actions

Bisping hadn’t ever been knocked out until a few weeks ago. Rashad hadn’t ever been knocked out until he fought Machida. Yet those are probably the most spectacular KTFOs in the UFC so far this year.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 6, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Comparing Willy G to Machida and Hendo is so ridiculous!!LMFAO Willy G is no way near neither!!Herman get KO’d due to a choke from Maia…..

by NM on Aug 6, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Wilson has big punching power, and the comparison is sound when you consider that Herman is no Bisping or Rashad. The point is that no fighter is impervious to being KO’d when facing a good striker, regardless of their fight history. And I didn’t know submissions counted as KOs now. Thanks man. Guess it’s time to rewrite the books.

by Jeremyjackson on Aug 6, 2009 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure Will G isn’t Hendo or Machida, but hey, Herman is no Evans or Bisping either. I think the biggest reason Herman is a dissappointment is because of all the self promotion and hype he put on himself during TUF and he has yet to really back that. He beat some scrubs with the exception of Smith who at the point was exactly show his championship caliber regardless of whether he even deserves to have that anointment but when he had to face good competition, he got destroyed. Gouveia may not be top tier but he is better than Doerksen and Price. And if you want to argue Doerksen, sure he has 42 wins but is 1-5 in the UFC and has never beat any of the top fighters he has faced.

by Five Finger Death Punch on Aug 6, 2009 7:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Herman would beat Bisbing and would love to have that match-up…I’ll take it to the bank on that one ! And who destroyed Ed Herman ? Let’s hear some names.

by Jimbo on Aug 8, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Na I was serious I wasn’t sure if he’d been kod before

by phenomenal angel on Aug 6, 2009 3:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh man, Ed Herman is going to get crushed by Wilson!!!!

by the spyder on Aug 6, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

Good bye Herman. Get your manager to email Strikeforce you number.

by UK_Chris on Aug 6, 2009 1:13 PM EDT reply actions

I like Ed herman also. I think this is a good match-up for him. He has been training for the Fight Night Card in Sept. so his conditioning is good. He will just have to step it up a bit to be in top shape. This will be a good win for THE SHORTFUSE

by Jimbo on Aug 7, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

I’m a Herman fan and think this will be a good matchup for him. He has been preparing for a Fight Night Sept card so his conditioning is pretty good…he will just have to step up his training a bit as he took this fight on short notice. This is another opportunity for The SHORTFUSE to gain some more believers as Gouveia is a very good fighter. I’ll be there and plan to celebrate with him after his WIN. ED HERMAN…BMF !
