Anderson Silva: Don't boo for me Argentina

The truth is, I never bored you...
"Sometimes, I can't believe it, man, I can't believe it. Every time I step inside of the cage, I put my life in danger. Sometimes when you are standing outside of the Octagon, it's a lot different than being inside. I am there for the fans, but for the fans that boo, it comes down to a lack of knowledge"
An incredulous UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva tells Philly.com that he still doesn't understand the chorus of boos he received against Thales Leites at UFC 97 despite the fact that prior to the hands-off approach he took against Patrick Cote at UFC 90, "The Spider" finished the first seven of his UFC opponents in devastating fashion, including top contenders Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson. Have the fans become spoiled by Silva's devastating arsenal? Or has the champ been mailing it in while he waits for an eventual showdown with fading pugilist Roy Jones Jr.? Perhaps that answer to that question will come when he 'puts his life in danger' against light heavyweight gamer Forrest Griffin this Saturday at UFC 101.

Exactly, Anderson is going to smash Forrest and I can understand his frustration, these boo boys are the same “USA, USA” chanting, stand and bang cheering drunk morons who are the equivalent of those fans who boo their own players in team sports. I can’t wait until Andy silences the critics after smashing the poster boy and everyone suddenly jumps back on the Silva bandwagon.

There will be boos, no doubt about it. Anyway what do you expect, he finished much more dangerous opponents in a much more exciting fashion. Anyone imo who can stand and trade with Franklin and go to the ground with Hendo has nobody left to fear. He should have killed Cote and Lietes. I’m just speaking honestly here, I wasn’t booing but I understand why people were. Booing is the best way to get your opinion heard by the UFC. Fighters who don’t please fans shouldn’t headline shows without a strong card. The UFC trusted that Silva would give them a great performance twice and he fell through. This may be a dangerous sport, but its an entertainment sport so yes there will be drunken booing. One thing I can say about the US fans is that they don’t normally go on riots or kill refs so you can stop cutting on them.

People that don’t want to see a master Mix Martial Artist perform should go to one of those streetfight internet sites to get their fix of combat. This guy is a martial artist. PERIOD! His style is to inflict maximum damage while receiving minimal damage in return. Besides the Lutter fight, when he was coming off double knee surgery just 16 weeks before, when have you seen him take damage? when have you seen him in trouble? He is correct, uneducated fans boo his last fight. Did any of you see what Leites looked like after that fight? He was a mess. If Anderson was only dancing and not engaging, then how did Leites get beat to a pulp? And what about those legkicks? As awkward as they were he, was still banging him with them over and over again.
,
I had no issue with his performance in that fight. I do however call into question Leites. To win a title you have to do everything to take it from a champ. It is an opportunity some wait their whole careers for. To throw it away like that was him saying he never wants to ever fight for the title again. Why would the UFC risk it. For Leites to ever get a title shot again he will probably have to win like 6 fights in a row in dominating fashion. Not gonna happen.
,
Forrest is a different kind of fighter though. He needs to get hit to get going. He thrives on exchanging so he will definately play into Anderson’s strength but coming forward and will get the same result that Franklin got. This will be great for the fans. They will see the devestating Silva again because he never left!!!!

Anderson Silva is a great martial artist, he on the top of many pound for pound lists. He has racked up devasting wins among many great opponents. He is a classy guy and wants respect.
Many people have been upset by his last two performances. Seemingly out of the ordinary, two lackluster wins yet he remained unbruised and photoshoot ready minutes after each fight.
Yet who are we to blame? The unaggressive combatant attempting to climb to UFC glory or do we blame the king of the hill who only asks that someone try to storm his castle before he unleashes fury?
Anderson is as much a victim as the fans. Being met with opponents that are more satisfied with a resemblance of competition than they are with stealing the belt from the king. Leites and Cote were lackluster opponents with as much willingness to engage as a trigger shy teenager out on his first date. Great ability results in great demands from fans, yet doesn’t it take two to tango?
Anderson, I hope you dance. I really do hope you dance.
UFC, please send an appropriate partner.
Forrest Griffin you say? Ahh. Thank you.
Thank you very much.

Awesome post Jerry J! I think the one thing that MMA needs to take away from boxing if anything, is the challenger has to take the belt! If the challenger doesn’t engage then the belt stays in its rightful place. People can blame Anderson all they want but it was a 2 way street. Leites had no biz being in the cage with Silva and did everything in his power to avoid any exchanges. Griffin will be a great test, hope fully is does not get Irvin’ed….
by Da Monkey on Aug 5, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Great posts, Anderson destroyed Leites and made him look like an amateur, if Thales and Patrick weren’t too scared of Silva to engage then he would have KO’d them both and everyone would be saying how wonderful he is, instead he was stuck fighting two cowardly worthless opponents who had no business in a title fight and he became a victim of the drunken boo boys.
Like Lyoto Machida, he fights smart and is able to strategise in the middle of a fight, changing his gameplan on the fly. His striking is so accurate and powerful that he’s deadly and his ground game is also excellent. Machida used to get booed because he didn’t finish fights, despite outclassing all of his opponents and showing great respect to them and the sport, but now is suddenly popular because he KO’d Thiago and Rashad. Now Andy is getting booed because he’s no longer stopping fights in under 2 rounds and it’s pathetic. He has every right to be angry and I’m looking forward to another dominating win for Andy on Saturday night.

That was very obviously Thales’ fault. If you watch the fight it was the most embarassing display of manhood ever. Anderson doesn’t need to follow someone to the canvas when they won’t stand and fight him. Anderson fights only as hard as his competition and Leites didn’t deserve to be in the ring with him

If he is their to win and not impress then he shouldn’t complain about being booed. If he wants to fight for the fans, then he should go in and try to put on a show…if he just wants to win then he needs to just take the boos he gets for being what some fans see as “boring”. You can’t have it both ways though. People aren’t being haters because they PAID to see something and didn’t get it. Anderson isn’t in the wrong for fighting the way he did, but the fans aren’t in the wrong for wanting to see a more exciting fight. So he has to deal with it, they are the customer.

He called Robert Drysdale a fool and an idiot!!! Doesnt sound classy and respectful to me. All drysdale did was say he thought forrest would submit anderson. That doesnt make you a fool or an idiot, that makes you a person who has an opinion. Frankly I used to think Silva was one of the more humble people in mma, but over the last year or so Ive slowly started to notice that he has gotten a little more arrogant and full of himself. (By the way, Robert Drysdale may not be great at MMA, but that “fool” would submit Anderson Silva in a grappling match rather easily I think)

if he takes that cautious approach when he finally does get to fight RJJ, RJJ will hospitalize this man and impede his speech to something the likes of Evander Holyfield. hey Spider, ur not a world class boxer, u don’t have world class hand speed!! Thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Roy Jones might beat him but he won’t impede his speech. Its not his hand speed that is so great about AS. Plenty of guys have good hands. He has great head movement and if you think that you can punch as fast with 10 oz gloves as you can with 4 oz gloves you are crazy. It is so hard to hit him in the face. Also RJJ isn’t exactly in his prime… He’s freaking 40 years old. I am gonna stop short of calling you stupid but wise up man. Watch Anderson fight

You are right deuce, Fedor isn’t afraid of a size difference. Unfortunately he is afraid of competition, hence he takes the freakshow bouts against 300lb+ cans knowing there’s no way on earth he could possibly lose!
by attakdog on Aug 5, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
the guys that aren’t confident in their abilities cut weight b/c they can’t hang unless they’re in a lower weight class. AS is NOT a 185lb man. He’s naturally 200+ if he’s a lb. and he has been since he was fully mature in his early 20’s. he’s as big as any LHW in the ufc except for forrest and rampage, and he’s BIGGER than any MW the ufc has. i think he’d prefer the easy rout to a great legacy, fighting guys nowhere near his size and strength, but dana finally stepped in and said enough is enough. how can someone even mention that AS is the top p4p fighter in the world when Aug. 8 will be the 1st time in his LIFE that he’s fought someone bigger than him. Every opponent he’s ever had has been smaller than him, i’m not even sure he’s fought anyone his own size

by Cantrim on Aug 5, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Come on stop with that. He could’ve jump right in Leites guard and work from there, it’s not kickboxing. If he is indeed the greatest P4P like people like to call him, he wouldve went there and finish the fight.
by 10DoLLaTriP on Aug 5, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions
Why would you jump into the guard of a guy who is more dangerous on the ground then you? Doing that would lower Anderson’s fight IQ in my opinion, and TAKE AWAY from the argument that he is the best pound for pound. Being the best doesn’t only mean you have the best skill set, but that you are also know how to utilize your skill set to its best advantage in each fight.
by RyGuy on Aug 5, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Why should he go to the one place that Thales may have the advantage. If you can dictate where the fight goes then I say do it. GSP takes the fight to the ground because he can and wants to. He knows he is dominant there. If he fought a guy that could stop the take downs then he would have to prove that he can beat someone standing up. This is the exact same thing for Anderson except he is a tremendous striker and it would make no sense for him to go to the ground when his opponent can’t take the fight there.
If Thales wanted to win that fight then he should have been prepared to stand and trade with Anderson. This is why Leites did not deserve a title fight against the best LB for LB fighter in the world. You need more than just one great skill to be a champion in the UFC.
by MMAFan1981 on Aug 5, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
couldnt of said it better myself, this guy is right on the mark. I 100% agree as should any knowledgeable MMA fan.
by Mathias420 on Aug 5, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
If you consider yourself a very knowledgeable MMA fan then you should also know that it takes two fighters to create an exciting fight. You cannot expect a guy to create a highlight reel knockout if his opponent is running away and dropping to his back every time he attacks him.
The fights that have been exciting with Anderson are the ones where his opponent attacks him. This allows Anderson to use his counter punching and shows how he can attack. If you run from the guy and fall to your butt every time he attacks, the fight is going to be boring.
I blame Thales for the boring fight not Anderson. He is the champ and why should he have to prove himself. Thales acted like he deserved the title shot and would take the belt from Anderson. We all know how that turned out Thales looked like an amateur that was afraid to engage. If your only skill is BJJ in the Octagon to beat fighters then you should not get a title shot against the LB for LB best fighter in the world. In my opinion Dana White F’d up on this one and instead of admitting it he insulted his best fighter. After hearing what Dana said about Silva’s last two fights I have zero respect for “The President” of the UFC.

I can see this argument for the Leites fight, but what about Cote. . . he stood in front of Anderson the whole fight ready to engage and all Silva did was dance. . .
by Jesse G on Aug 5, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I haven’t watched the Cote fight in a while but if you expect to see an extremely exciting fight from Silva every time out you are bound to be disappointed. Cote had a decent game plan and was able to stay away from Silva’s power. He was also able to throw off Silva’s timing. I would have to say that of all the fights Anderson has had in the Octagon the Cote fight showed his weakness better than the rest.
Cote was able to attack effectively but didn’t quite have the reach to land some of his punches. This is why I feel that Forrest has a good chance at upsetting Silva. He is as long as Anderson and we know that length has helped Anderson out quite a bit in the past. It should be interesting to see how Anderson adjusts to Forrest’s size and length.
The one knock on Forrest is that he tends to get sloppy and ends up paying for it. When he fights smart and sticks to the game plan the entire time he is tough to beat. The two fights that are good examples of that are Jardine and Evans.
by MMAFan1981 on Aug 5, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions
So if Leites didn’t deserve a shot because all he had was BJJ why does AS keep the belt if all he does is strike? At least GSP tries to finish every fight. I think the definition of a lb. for lb. best is someone that’s well rounded. GSP hasn’t finished many fights lately, but they were all exciting and GSP had them all very close to being finished, he dropped Fitch numerous times and dropped Alves, he traded with Alves even though he took it down a lot. GSP has gone against many good BJJ guys and has taken them down and not been scared of being on the ground.
I mean, how could Silva not know that Leites would have a strategy to go to the ground, I mean flopping to his back was extreme, but did he not practice for that type of match?
by AS/BS on Aug 5, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
AS/BS in 9 fights in the Octagon Anderson Silva has only not finished 2 fights. Every single fight was won in dominating fashion except for maybe the Henderson fight. However he made Hendo look bad in the second round of that fight.
I am not sure what you mean by AS does nothing but strike. Did he not roll with Thales during there fight and was in no trouble what so ever. He just prefers to stand and the only reason he went to the ground that one time was because Tales took the fight there. Also did he or did he not submit Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson? In two fights he has submitted just as many opponents as GSP has in his 15 fights in the Octagon.
Also saying that GSP will fight anywhere is true but he is always looking for a take down. Obviously we all know that taking an opponent down takes more than just walking up to them and saying, “hey could you fall down for me”. If you prefer to stand up you are already there and do not need to set anything up to get to that position. GSP uses his striking to take his opponents down. If he chooses to stand with a fighter it is normally in the later rounds where he has worn them down which makes there striking less effective. At that point he can pick his shots and is in less danger of getting caught.

Silva should take a page from Machida’s new look, combine defense with timed KO aggression, that’s why he was able to take advantage of Rashad and KO him!

I got a question (or statement) regarded something Anderson Silva said during the countdown show regarding Robert Drysdale. As far as I knew, Drysdale was the BJJ coach of Xtreme Couture, right (if I’m wrong here, then it all makes sense). Andy says Drysdale wanted to train with him, which is reasonable, seeing Andy has pretty good jits, and Drysdale wants to train with the best. Forrest vs Andy is announced, and since Forrest and Drysdale both at XtremeCouture, Drysdale trains Forrest in BJJ, as he always does, and shows his support by saying Forrest will submit Andy (I’m sure his kickboxing coach says Forrest will KO Andy too, its just them showing support and confidence in their fighter). Andy then goes on about “who is Drysdale, the guys an idoit, he shouldn’t have an opinion because he doesnt fight.” So Anderson is saying that if you dont fight you can’t have an opinion on a fight? Sounded to me that Andy was a little butt-hurt by that.

He was definatly winning his fight with cote but he wasn’t outclassing him. I like anderson and the way he fights, I honestly think people are starting to catch up to him, (Not thales though) and I dont see him blowing forrest out in this fight. His next two or three fights are all going to be tough for him and much closer than any of his previous.

I’m torn on this. I hate to see a fighter get booed but it isn’t just a fight, it’s also entertainment and he is getting a pretty decent amount of money to entertain us. If he wants to avoid damage, the crowd paid hard earned money and have the right to let their displeasure be known.

I do hate the UFC fanbase that seems to be at all their events booing because the bullshit beer they are swilling down has run out or the fight that is in the cage is ::gasp:: on the ground. I will agree with him on the “lack of knowledge” part. But it seems as though he fights just to get the wins anymore and not really to finish a fight. We can argue all day about whether or not that’s good or not, but there are other fighters (on his level AND with just as much, if not more, to lose—being titles and/or records) that fight and try to finish the fight.

Regardless of that not only are we guaranteed the right of free speech by the constitution but as consumers we can boo all we want. I do draw the line at insulting fighters as that is 1. A really bad idea since they could kill most people and 2. That truly is disrespectful. Just my opinion.

Kind of agree with you there, you put your life in danger every time you cross a street or start up your car. More people die in car wrecks getting hit by drunk drivers than in MMA fights. And btw how many people have died as a direct result from participating in an MMA fight to date? I think like 1..

Yea I read about one of those, still though, the argument that fighters make about putting their lives on the line is kind of true/untrue; yes they are directly in harms way, but the statistics don’t really back up the claim; I mean just statistically they’re in much more danger partying at the club after the fight, or driving to and from the gym on a daily basis. And also Spooner in regards to your comments up top about mod, yes same problem here.

You’re thinking that you are so right, pointing out points that aren’t even discussed. Its not about the lack of VIOLENCE or KO, its about the fact that Spider did’nt do what he could’ve done and people were upset about it. I dont see anybody asking for blood and KO? Just a damn good fight.

I kind of understood the caution with Cote, he’s got power and he could clip Silva and make something happen if Silva gets careless. I think what really killed that fight is Cote collapsing in the 3rd and grabbing his knee, not Silva’s fault that it ended that way but he catch’s a bad rap on that one, guilt by association. Leites on the other hand? I think Silva had the tools to finish Thales at any given time in that fight, he looked disinterested and almost bored in there. I can forgive the Cote performance but the Leites one still has me confused.

For some reason I want to see this guy brutally ko’d, stiff on the ground like loud mouth bisping, it would make my year, I’d laugh my ass off, but know it would be a one hell of a freakish punch with some luck involved(like throwing a perfect bullseye with no prior skill) yes there was intent and yea you threw it but it was lucky, to all the farts out there who says there’s no lucky punch.

by Pat on Aug 5, 2009 12:50 PM EDT reply actions
I remember being confused when I heard several fighters, including Forrest Griffin, actually say they thought the Silva-Cote fight was exciting, but after going back to watch it I agree. Cote was a bit outclassed, but he always moved forward and he took shots that were definitely harder than those that put guys like Marquardt, Franklin, and Henderson in trouble. Not only that, after taking those shots Cote wasn’t fazed at all!
I think it was a good fight and Cote showed that with his solid striking and toughness, not even the best striker in the world could run through him. I hope they have him fight a good striker in the MW division in his return and he can prove me right.
As for Leites, that was like 10% Silvas fault, and he certainly should not have been booed.
Bottom line, I’m with Anderson on this one. If I was him, I wouldn’t understand it either.

you risk you’re life everytime you get in your car, and in your daily commute from work to home there’s a greater chance of you dying than of a fighter dying in MMA; no one wants to get hurt/killed but I don’t think thats a legitimate excuse for being so passive in a combat sport where you are intentionally, knowingly and willfully putting yourself in harms way to begin with.

I mean the UFC has become anti-grappling because of “uneducated” fans.
I want to be able to enjoy watching technical grappling (during and MMA fight), but when two fighters get stood up right before a guard pass and then end up dancing on the feet with no action for the rest of the round drives me nuts. Just my 2 cents.

Next to Japanese fans the American fans are the next most educated group of people that watch MMA! look at the first card in germany stacked with strikers; why? Cause they know those ppl don’t appreciate the ground game! Not to mention the old Josh Thompson fight in Canada, when it went to the ground the croud started throwing projectiles and cursing the fighters and the ref. They had to RUN for their lives out of the arena because they thought they were gonna get seriously injured. To my recollection, nothing like that has ever happened in America.

Fight fans watch in hopes of seeing a GOOD FIGHT. That doesn’t make one ignorant. Sometimes styles or skill level discrepancies or whatever else do not allow an exciting battle – fine. It’s unavoidable and it’s something people need to accept and get over, but to be disappointed at a boring fight is a natural reaction. It isn’t absurd at all. It’s supposed to be a fight. One shouldn’t have to feel bad for wanting to see a good one.

Also in the Leites fight while neither fighter even tried to finish the fight I have to fault Silva way more for not trying.
