***Update: Strikeforce has confirmed that light Mike Kyle has agreed to step up and face Werdum on August 15.
Fabricio Werdum will no longer be fighting at the upcoming Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" event after a nagging hand injury forced original opponent Alistair Overeem from the August 15 card according to MMA Fanhouse.
"Vai Cavalo" was anticipating a last-minute replacement for his debut with the San Jose-based promotion but Strikeforce officials have instead opted to scrap the bout all together.
The Brazilian has gone 2-2 since his short tenure in the UFC that started back in April 2007. After losing a cautious slapfest against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 70, Werdum put together two straight TKO victories over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, only to get bounced from the promotion when he was upset (and uppercut) by out-of-the-blue bruiser Junior Dos Santos.
Werdum was hoping to erase some bad memories this August in a rematch with Overeem but will have to settle for a potential Fall 2009 fight -- which just so happens to coincide with the planned debut of newly-signed heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.
We'll keep you posted on the future bouts of both men in the coming days.
Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" will feature a 145-pound title fight between female fighting sensation Gina "Conviction" Carano and her nemesis Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos as well as a 170-pound scrap between Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title.
