Yeah, Hendo’s KO felt a little extra special.

Hornbuckle is crazy tall for a 167 pounder. Kind of like a Kendall or a Corey Hill. I didn’t know anything about this dude, other than he was supposed to lose to Gono. He looked really good, had Gono mounted at one point and dropping some good shots on him. I wonder how he’d do vs DREAM’s Marius Zaronskis.

never rated Marius. He fought and lost twice to Che Mills in cage rage. Che Mills is the guy that lost to James Wilks to get into the house for TUF9.

So with your MMAth , what are you trying to prove?
by Synyster on Aug 2, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dan is big on the canadian MMA scene, he defeated my sensei by rear naked choke. He always gets a lot of boos and likes playing the villain. He is tall and difficult to handle. Good fo him though, he is a very tough kid. He derailed my sensei’s chances of going to the UFC, as he was close and we train with Cote, Kang and sometimes GSP an Loiseau among others. But maybe now Hornbuckle may get the opportunity for a shot at the UFC, he is deserving.

Syn: Chill the f**k out. We all base our views on fighters by past performances. I was mearly stating that i’ve seen Marius fight four times and he lost twice.
If I had said James Wilks would beat Marius beacuse he beat Che who has beaten Marius twice, that would be MMAth. But I didn’t.

That’s because you wouldn’t wish that on Gono….but Bisping…well

WTF was that? A big toe knock out kick? Man that had to hurt. Nicely timed and precise kick.

gono’s hands were way down, thats what he gets. but ya OUCH.

gono has been hit too many times NOW!
cum on gono is a joke now, who’d fight with their hands so low?!?!?!?!?
I hope he’s ok?!?!?
I really wonder what longitudinal studies will show from mma fighters who have gotten knocked out….is the sport too young to ask suck questions and can’t a kick have more power than the best boxer can throw???
by iamdanawhite on Aug 2, 2009 12:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ask steve young about post concussion sydrome. you can only take so many shots that big.

Whe has gono ever fought with his hands up? How many times has he been KO’d in 13 years of fighting? I just don’t get how fast people jump on and off bandwagons.
by NameNotRequired on Aug 2, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not about jumping on and off bandwagons. It’s about Gono failing to evolve his stand-up.

Kick boxing and other martial arts have been about for years!! Boxing is the worst because even if a fighter is almost ko’d the fight can start again after a ten count, the result being continual damage!! Mma the fight is over, very little un needed punishment!

The larger boxing gloves distribute the force of the blow across a much larger surface area than small MMA gloves, causing significant brain trauma while also providing enough cushioning to prevent loss of consciousness. Small gloves or even just going with taped fists causes more superficial damage (minor cuts and bruising) but will not have anywhere near the long-term negative effects that boxing causes.
by PW on Aug 2, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well also you have to add the whole speed x mass = powngae equations…Boxing gloves are not designt to protect the recipient only the user’s hand.

Where do you guys get this stuff. Ever taken a bare-knuckle punch? It is like ten times harder than a punch with an eight-ounce glove. It’s basic physics. Bone-on-bone shots have absolutely no padding. The impact is not distributed across the surface area of the glove. The padding of a glove lessens the impact of the blow. Period. That’s why it is very difficult to knock someone out with 16-ounce sparring gloves. THE MORE PADDING, THE LESS JARRING THE IMPACT. Anyone who has sparred with MMA gloves will tell you the punches are harder than with boxing gloves.
I agree that boxing gloves can lead to eating more shots than with no gloves or smaller gloves, because the recipient is less likely to lose consciousness immediately and as a result can end up eating more shots. An accumulation of lesser blows may well do more damage than one KO blow; but a KO is doing big-time damage as well, and there is no evidence to support the theory that boxing gloves are more dangerous.
Brain injuries ARE more common in boxing, but it is not because of the gloves. It’s because punching your opponent in the head is the only way to win in boxing, and guys don’t have the option of going to the ground when they’ve had enough. Also, standing 8-counts give the fighter a chance to recover and an already bleeding brain then absorbs even more punishment.
by Jeremyjackson on Aug 2, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh right, there isn’t any. Pretty hard to measure the long-term effects of MMA gloves when they’ve only been in use for about 12 years, and by a much smaller sample size of athletes.

im not sure those theories have been proven… just hypthesized?

I think you guys are jumping to conclusions. Yeah, his hands were down, but it was also the 3rd round of a tough fight (you could see Gono was breathing through his mouth), and Hornbuckle had just caught his kick. Whenever that happens, you instinctively put your hands down for balance. It was just a perfectly timed kick (may be a technique he’s even worked on) that caught him. This doesn’t demonstrate that Gono sucks – rather, it shows that Hornbuckle is pretty good.
by Collin on Aug 2, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree, his hands go down because he’s off balance from being on one foot.

Saw this live last night..
Identical KO to Marius Zaromskis over Jason High.
Japanese MMA is spoiling us with these lately.

his hands were down for awhile though. i understand the fact that he was tired and hornbuckle isnt a scrub but cmon thats basic stuff. if you cant take 3 rounds of a fast paced fight and still keep your hands at least somewhat up to protect yourself you are asking for it. his head movement wasnt that good either for most of what i saw. ive had a kick caught before too and my first instinct is usually to try and clinch or at least get close and cover up to avoid any strikes with power behind them. if he takes me down thats fine but at least i dont get my blocked knocked into the 2nd row. i have respect for all fighters im just callin it like i see it. sloppy defending ;)

WOW! That was one of the best head kick knock outs!

Sick KO, gutting that it happened to Gono though, it’ll be difficult for him to recover from that.

Props to the winner for showing some respect after the knock out and backing off. He also did not jump around the cage like a jack ass.

We used to rip on this kid in high school because his name was Hornbuckle (I know, pretty lame but I was just a kid). I hope this dude isn’t a relative looking for revenge.

And some say Japan put on freak shows. TBH Japanese events deliver the goods even without the build up that UFC puts on.

Is it me or is that most miserable someone has ever looked after winning a fight? He looked like he was about to cry! It was like Gono was his best friend or brother and he was sorry to have to put him away. Or he was paid a crazy amount of money to take a dive and screwed it up by accidentally knocking out Gono.

yeah it look like he knew he hurt him bad with that shot

Dan is one of the most respectful fighters there is! I know he trained very hard for this fight so it wasn’t that he was miserable,he was happy he won and I’m sure the adrenaline was running, but keep himself restrained since his opponent was very hurt!! That is what you call respect! There should be more people like that in sports and in the world! So great fight Dan you should them what a greast fighter and person you are!!! Your on your way to the top!!!
by HANDLER FAN on Aug 3, 2009 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is Japan maybe the fight was suppose to go another round? Maybe he has some respect. The humane way to act after a KO is how this guy acted. Jumping around in celebration is a lack of class.

Just so you know Dan Hornbuckle is one of the most respectful fighters there are!!!He wasn’t miserable ,he just trained very hard for this fight and it meant alot to him to win!! He wants to make it to the top!! And with the training and dedication he has I know personally he can do it!!So no he wasn’t miserable he was happy he won but also being very respectful of his opponent who was really hurt!!! More Fighters should be like that!!!!
