Vitor Belfort signed for UFC 103 to fight Rich Franklin in Dallas Sept. 19

Dana White confirmed today that Vitor Belfort (18-8) has been acquired from the fallout of Affliction MMA and will replace Dan Henderson against Rich Franklin (25-4) in the main event of UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19.
White cited fan apathy towards the original main event between Franklin and Henderson as a catalyst for the change. "The Phenom" has agreed to meet "Ace" at a catchweight of 195 pounds -- despite rejecting a recent Affliction fight against Gegard Mousasi because it was outside of his new home at 185-pounds.
Dan Henderson will now be granted a rematch with Anderson Silva with a timetable pending the results of "The Spider's" Aug. 8 fight against Forrest Griffin.
Company president Dana White made a surprise announcement during "Inside the Octagon" back on June 20 that he was interested in bringing Vitor back under contract to possibly face Anderson Silva.
It was a bit strange because Belfort was booked to battle Sengoku Middleweight Grand Prix winner Jorge Santiago at Affliction 3: "Trilogy" on Aug.1, 2009, but White seemed confident that the Brazilian would return to the eight-sided cage for a third tour of duty after he satisfied his commitment to the "tee-shirt guys."
That commitment ended sooner rather than later.
Belfort has indeed looked fantastic since he made the decision to shed 20 more pounds and compete at 185 pounds.
He iced Terry Martin in the second round at Affliction: "Banned" with a nice combination that was set up by a flying knee. He followed up that performance at "Day of Reckoning," pulverizing Matt Lindland with a brutal first round blitzkrieg, landing six of seven strikes en route to a scary-looking knockout.
Whether or not a move back up in weight will affect that recent success remains to be seen -- though he may have little margin for error against the former middleweight champ.
Franklin scored a big win over the always dangerous Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99: "The Comeback" via unanimous decision back in June at a catchweight of 195 pounds. It was the third win in the last four attempts for the Cincinnati, Ohio, native, solidifying his position as a serious, and capable, light heavyweight contender.
It's going to be a ridiculous main event between two established veterans -- don't even think about missing this one.
Recently confirmed for UFC 103 is the heavyweight tilt between former Pride FC superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos. In addition, Martin Kampmann and Mike Swick will collide to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre’s 170-pound title.

Dont know if I would pick Vitor via KO though. When was the last time franklin was ko’d? A. Silva tko’d him twice, but the guy does have a chin. Anything can happen though!

So, obviously Vitor never really had a problem fighting at LHW like he claimed. It was a case of not wanting to risk a loss against a dangerous but as of yet low-profile (in NA) fighter in Mousasi. Thompkins basically admitted it in an interview a few weeks ago.

103 has gone from an OK card to an I-can’t-F*cking-wait card.
Rich Franklin is my favorite fighter (equal with Fedor) and this is the kind fight he needs. Belfort is one dangerous mofo and win or lose, this is good for Franklin, fighting top level competition.
YEAH!
(Ending with a “yeah” makes it all the more better. You should try it.)

I’m so stoked for this fight. They took a terrible match up of Hendo Franklin 2 which would have had no real winner in the fight and hooked Franklin up with a solid opponent. Vitor is going to rough Franklin up quite a bit in this fight but I have to give it to Ace in the end.

I gotta give it to Vitor. He has been looking great lately, and Im hoping he gets some wins at middle weight and fights Anderson. Even if Anderson loses to Dan, I want to see that fight. Go Hendo!

This fight will be much better to go head to head with Mayweather. THE RETURN OF VITOR BELFORT! This is going to be a sick stand up fight! Then we got Cro-Cop/Dos Santos, Kos/Trigg, then the Tyson Griffin fight should be exciting like most of his fights are. This card just shaped up with that main event.

Dana cares about making money. Which just so happens to go hand-in-hand with pleasing fans. Try not to allow your naivety to confuse the two.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 31, 2009 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah. Indeed, JJ. Although it’s the same kind of thing as fighters (like Tito) saying, “We do it for the fans.” Of course they consider it, but it’s not the number one reason they fight.
by Kobajack on Jul 31, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And nor should it be. In my opinion, Dana has more responsibility to the fans, but within reason of course. As I’ve said before, it’s a given that he’s trying to make money, but not so much that what the fans want isn’t a factor. It’s equivalent to having excellent customer service.
by Kobajack on Jul 31, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m usually not so keen on following a mainstream entity, whatever it may be, but the UFC is the best promotion and has the best service. It has the best fighters, the best events, and the best “customer service” in regard to putting on the fights we want to see and propagating MMA the right way.

This was a slap in the face for Marquardt and Maia, but i think mostly for Marquardt.
The guy has racked up FOUR straight wins after his loss to Silva, thats FOUR (4) which will soon be FIVE (5) after he beats Maia, and Hendo gets another shot with only 3 wins? Please…
Marquardt keeps getting screwed, id be pissed off if i was him.

I hope D-Dubya just devotes the next few years of his life, to smashing M1 into the ground.
M1’s business plan was as follows. They weren’t a successful company, and didn’t want to fail. Instead of just using Fedor by a contract, they gave him 20% of the company, so the fat Russian would always be committed. Fedor isn’t that big of a draw, and there are no more interesting fights for him outside of the octagon.
I was one of the foolish people crossing my fingers for him to be in the UFC. I was let down again, and never care to here about him again. Go beat up freakshows.
As soon as Fedor loses, or retires, M1 will go out of biz faster than EliteXC after Kimbo.

this match up makes no sense whatsover
vitor has dedicated and resurected his career at mw now hes ganna go back to lhw where he was unwilling to go just recently
in my opinion it woould have made much more sense to
A) give vitor an immediate shot to dethrone silva at 185 with his only chance his incredible hand speed
or
B) have the franklin/ vitor bout at a 195 catch wieght
I just think fans would be much more curios and fired up to see belfort vs silva instead of henderson/silva II

Why not give Rich – Coleman and have Tito fight his way back into the UFC rankings by fighting Vitor. He already has a win over him right?
Although there is the one problem Tito would have…
Vitor would knock his FOCKING block off quicktime.

Wasn’t there a lot of talk that Vitor was willing to step up and fight Fedor? If he’s willing to fight at HW, why not against a really great fighter in Rich Franklin at LHW? I’d like Hendo vs Franklin 2, but Belfort vs Franklin is a lot more exciting. If Belfort wins, i think he should fight Maia for spot behind Hendo. If Belfort loses, he should fight Wandy, as both are looking to fight in MW and both would have a recent lost to Franklin. MW divison is starting to get exciting again, first Wandy is moving down (hasnt debuted yet) now they have Belfort. Still waiting to see Irvin debut in MW.

Who gives a crap! Hopefully another/new fight will move into main event status. This is not what I want to see. And to think I was about to drop some cash driving to Dallas from Houston and buying this ticket, hotel, food, buze, and gas. This fight does not mean anything. Unless Vitor gets an immediate title shot following the win, and with the way things are going in the UFC it is more than likely. Sorry, but drunk and ranting. Have been waiting to see who was going to take Hendo’s spot after the fight was pulled off of UFC.com. Was hoping at least the return of Tito (would have accepted this, but not approved), but this? I come home and read this crap. F**K. Anyone agree? Again, thankful for the card as a whole, but ashamed of the main event.
Junior Dos Santos vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic

Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller
Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg
Hermes Franca vs. Tyson Griffin

Looks like a good card to me. Not sure what the problem is unless you want to see Lesnar or GSP in action. UFC keep all their really big fights for Vegas anyway. Vitor v Franklin is a pretty good main event IMO.
by MK on Jul 31, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To follow up to my last rant, Hendo is right where he should be. I considered it a slap in the face to have him KO Bisping and not get a title shot, when Bisping would have. The way I looked at the previous main event is Hendo/Franklin, both reaching the end of great careers. Why not have them fight again. The loser goes down in the rankings, a lesser opponent next time, and if it is a loss that can only mean that the doomed undercard would follow. Leading to the eventual end of the career/retirement. Meaning a release of a larger salary. Although if Franklin was to win (which I think he would not) it could set up the rubbermatch. Still not convinced that it could that large of an interest).
Again, drunk and ranting.

Actually after his fight with Wandy, he said 195 is perfect for him now.
by RockhardMMA on Aug 1, 2009 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
As I said, Rich said when he was eyeing the MW title that 185 suits him, of course he’s not even going to consider 185 for the time being because he’s not going anywhere there, my point is, in response to danasmassiveego, who was implying that Vitor is at a big disadvantage at 205, that Rich would have probably preferred to stay middleweight too except for the fact that he’s in limbo there because Silva/Franklin III isn’t going to happen anytime soon.
And Vitor has done well at 205 in the past. Yeah, there would be differences if they fought at 185, but both guys still do well at both weight classes.
