Dana White conference call for July 31 to break latest UFC news and developments

UFC President Dana White will be holding a special conference call today (July 31) at 2pm ET to discuss all the latest news and developments within the Las Vegas-based promotion.
And there's certainly a lot to talk about.
First order of business is of course the fall of Affliction MMA -- who quickly returned to the UFC as a talent sponsor after closing up shop, bringing some leftover fighter contracts with them.
Also on tap is the recent UK television deal with sports network giant ESPN, who will now broadcast UFC events and programming throughout the UK and Ireland.
And let's not forget about the return of a certain "Huntington Beach Bad Boy," as former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz is expected to be announced back into the fold.
Who knows, maybe we'll even get a few surprises along the way.
To help you stay current with all the latest happenings, we'll be live blogging the media call and keep you posted on breaking news just as soon as we get it, so be sure to refresh often.
Let's get on with it.
2:05pm: Came to the table willing to give up anything except co-promotion to sign Fedor Emelianenko. Offered "amazing" deal that he won't see elsewhere but M-1 turned it down.
2:07: Vitor Belfort is signed and will fight Rich Franklin in Dallas at UFC 103 due to fan apathy towards Franklin vs. Dan Henderson.
2:08: Belfort vs. Franklin will be contested at light heavyweight.
2:09: ESPN to carry UFC programming in high definition for UK and Ireland.
2:10: Tito Ortiz is back and will finish his career in the UFC -- plans to fight before the year's end, possibly against Mark Coleman.
2:15: Dan Henderson is next in line for Anderson's Silva belt, Demian Maia not far behind.
2:20: Some uninteresting questions followed by some serious UFC butt-smooching.
2:25: Dana slams the sport of boxing.
2:30: UFC shooting for Vancouver in 2010.
2:33: If co-promotion was off the table, Fedor would be in the UFC right now.
2:35: UFC has no interest in Tim Sylvia or Andrei Arlovski.
2:38: No hard feelings towards Affliction and Atencio.
2:40: Dana still working on a deal that will "change the UFC forever."
2:50: Ten minutes of Dana screaming about the Fedor deal.
2:55: More Tito talk. Dana and Tito are in a good place according to them. Tito picked the UFC because he would have smashed Babalu and Frank Shamrock in Strikeforce anyway.
3:00: Tito won't give specifics but will fight in the UFC for the rest of his career, thinks Coleman would be a good test.
3:05: Call ends with Dana and Tito being giggly.

Demian Amaia is next right after Henderson huh? Way to completely overlook Marqaurdt.

Yeah. Hendo’s earned another shot, but I still think he should fight the winner of Marquardt/Maia and the winner of that fight should get the shot. Anderson has a limited number of fights left and I want him to face the best possible opponent.
We’ve already seen what Anderson can do to Dan, and it isn’t going to look any different with Dan a couple years older.
I really hope we see Belfort/Wand 2 at MW once the Franklin fight is done. One of those two guys against the Spider would be damned entertaing. A short fight, perhaps, but damned entertaing.
An interesting news day yet again, that’s for sure.

I disagree JJ… Dan showed that he is a much more capable Octagon fighter than when he first came to the UFC. He rebounded nicely and realistically, he is the only person to win a round againt Andy in like 5 years.

JJ-
Agreed with Hendo v. winner of Nate/Maia.
Wand v. Belfort 2 = YES!

Spooner-
How has he shown that? He’s just fighting way easier guys than when he first entered the UFC. Rampage and Anderson are a helluva step up from Palhares, Franklin and Bisping.
And the only one of those three wins he really looked impressive in was the last one against Bisping, and that was due to a combination of being able to walk right through Bisping’s strikes and Bisping forgetting one of the fundamental rules of boxing. Franklin was owning Hendo standing up in the third round of their fight, and we all know how Rich’s striking compares to Anderson’s. If that was a five-rounder Dan would have been in very deep shit.
Don’t kid yourself bro, Dan isn’t any better a fighter than he was when he entered the UFC – if anything he’s lost a step. The laws of nature can’t be broken. You don’t start getting better when you’re a c-hair from 40.

UFC has no interest in Timmay or AA? Weak. Get everyone you can, within the boundaries of reason, says I.
by Synyster on Jul 31, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Timmay was like 60 pounds over the HW limit last time we saw him. I’d be perfectly content to never see him fight again. AA could make a comeback though, he just needs to start letting his hands go more and incorporate some head movement into his defence.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 31, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Timmeh is a decent fighter. Needs to get his shit together though. I would agree, right now, that he don’t deserve to be in the UFC.
Does anyone know the full list of new fighters acquired?
by Synyster on Jul 31, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right now AA’s head movement is a sharp 90 degrees to the right, followed immediately by six feet straight down to the mat.

Great news about Vitor signing, though that’s another MW not facing Bisping at 105, looks like we are getting another awful main event. I’m also not sure how fighting at 205 will help Vitor, I’d rather see him stick at 185 though him against Franklin is a much more interesting fight than Rich-Dan II.
Maia and Marquardt got a shocking deal here, there is no way that Hendo should leapfrog them two to get another crack at Andy. Since that fight, Dan’s not shown any improvement, he’s still the same excellent wrestler with a big right hand that lost to Anderson. Sure the Bisping win was impressive and wins over Franklin and Palhares, no matter the circumstance, are both good but Hendo only finished one fight and that was because Bisping came in with a horrible gameplan and even then he ruined the moment with poor sportsmanship and tasteless comments. Andy-Dan II is as pointless to me as Rich-Dan II, arguably even more so because the result isn’t in doubt.
As one sided as Andy-Nate was, a win over Maia would be more impressive than anything Dan has done in the UFC and would warrant another shot, seeing how Nate has beaten all of the other contenders and pretty much beat Leites before blowing it with point deductions, and even then I had it 28-27. As for Maia, nobody is on a hotter streak than him at MW and for him to miss out on another title shot is bogus, if he beats Nate (which I’ve been calling since it was announced) then I’ll be fuming that Hendo got the shot instead of him.
No suprise that Tito is back, funny how that whole situation turned out, Kevin called it from day 1 so hats off to him. However, I’m not particularly interested in seeing him fight Coleman, it’s as relevant as Royce-Shamrock III. Coleman got a good win over Bonnar but Stephan’s wrestling has always been awful and after the Jones fight he looked finished mentally as a fighter, whilst if Shogun was in shape then he would have won their fight in R1. I’d rather see Tito face stronger competition and this just seems to be a blatant attempt to get Tito an easy win. After seeing what happened the last two times Coleman was brought in to lose, I’d laugh if something similar happens again. Coleman’s turning into the new Jardine.

interview with Jerry Millen of M-1:
Going back to co-promotion, so you’re saying co-promotion for M-1 means a 50/50 investment between the two parties?
Yeah, yeah. You sit down with the hard numbers. What’s the fight purses? What’s the venue? What’s the advertising budget? Travel, food, throw it all in a pot, split it down the middle, and at the end of the event if the ink is black and there’s a profit, split the profit, and if the ink is red, then just split the loss.
How has other miscellaneous topics that have been reportedly been an issue in the past, such as Sambo, the inclusion of other Red Devil (Fedor’s camp) fighters, the amount of M-1 branding, played into negotiations?
You know all of that stuff is negotiable. If the UFC would have sat down, and conducted as a true co-promotion and say “ok we’ll do half M-1 fighters, and half UFC fighters,” all that can be worked out. At the end of the day it’s about the main event card. That’s what they want: Brock vs. Fedor. Everything else can be worked out as long as they’re willing to work with us. That’s all. And at the end of the day if you’re really a fan of the sport – not a fan of the UFC – You got to step back and see what is best for the sport. Fedor sell his soul to the UFC for an X amount of dollars? Or break their model? I know they have a business model but to me they’re the WWE of MMA…………………….funniest part of this
" and at the end of the event if the ink is black and there’s a profit, split the profit, and if the ink is red, then just split the loss." ufc only gets profits and these russians are greedy
by JG on Jul 31, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
M-1 are leaches and clearly couldn’t give a toss about the fans, they are only interested in lining their own greedy pockets. If the UFC is the WWE of MMA, then M-1 is the XPW.
You have to be a fan of Fedor the fighter but clearly Fedor the businessman is as shady as the likes of Millen and Finkelstein. How can anyone possibly demand half of the profits and half the spots on the card when negotiating over one fighter is absurd. If anyone is going to give the UFC competition then it will be a promotion like Strikeforce who actually care about the fans and putting on the best cards, M-1 are a crooked company with one great fighter who doesn’t even fight on their shows. They just want to make money out of other people’s hard work, well screw them and Fedor. Give me the UFC, Strikeforce and Dream over M-1 anyday.

Truth be told they are both greedy, dana makes about 30-70 mill alone an event on top of other commissions for merchandise and on top of a hefty salary. The problem here is respect and integrity, dana a few years ago basically spit in fedor and his representations face wanting them to give up everything, and not offering them a reasonable deal money wise to fight as well as rights, not too mention the slave ownership and brand of UFC on his forehead and not letting him be affiliated with his sambo tournaments which he has done more than anything. And another thing, Did you know that Fedor is a partner in the M-1 company meaning he owns part of it. He puts a lot of time and effort into broadening his company around the world to help mma grow, he is a pioneer. He wants and hopes for everyone to see MMA the way he does and partake. Both are businessmen. People talk about the russians being this and that, but they are brought up right and are men of integrity and are not just going to bow to a monotheistic company, that can’t take over the world like This Gov’t is trying to do as well so come off it. If dana offered this present day offer back then, he would be in the UFC, no question. He basically said hey fedor, you get what i pay you, wear my brand, you are a slave, and oh about YOUR company M-1 you can abandon that just to fight a rookie gym rat mma fighter. And an arrogant but foolish frank mir and broken down Randy Coutoure. Please, now he is trying to kiss fedor’s ass with an incentive clause saying he can make x amount of money on a gamble type deal. If every event was like UFC 100 then he could make a 6 fight 30 million dollar deal but that won’t happen. The money isn’t the issue, sambo isn’t the issue any more, him being on the MMA video game which, fedor is trying to promote the sport and make a little dough by doing it is no the issue. Both are businessmen and want to grow their companys and help continue their efforts, fedor for the sport, dana for his company and his wallet. The Medium is respect, let them co promote, it is only for the Fedor Fights which would be 3-5 a year? Everyone gets paid, everyone gets famous, both companys promote MMA and Fedor will help bring the UFC over the top to mainstream.

If he were closer to a title shot it would matter, but he is just kinda stuck between both divisions. I think it is a testament to his character, everyone says they’ll fight anyone anytime, but Rich is the only guy doing it at whatever weight the other guy wants to.

Screw Fedor. The UFC has bent over backwards for a guy who may or may not perform well in the octagon. I’ve attended many live ufc’s, and the majority in attendence aren’t hardcores like us. Many don’t even know who Fedor is. Yes it would be a dream come true for us bloggers, but from a business standpoint, why pay him more than any fighter in the history of the ufc when 1. he doesn’t speak english 2. his physique 3. his management are douchbags 4. he’s a nice guy. Basically, he’s not marketable. Piss on him. If he wants to continue fighting in a no-name organization against no-name opponents for the rest of his short career, let him. Besides, if the Arlovski fight showed us anything, it’s that he’s not superman. He was buckled many times.
by Josh Hauck on Jul 31, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
AGREED DUDE. I could care less about Fedor now. I was excited for like 1 day, then they kept complaining and saying this or that.
Go away now Fedor. You aren’t the best because you fight guys who are cut by the UFC. You don’t fight the best.
by Bennie Blanco on Jul 31, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You guys are not very smart, Fedor has a 3-fight contract with M-1 Global, he is tied up with them for probably another year. Arlovski and Sylvia were not cut by the UFC, Affliction over-payed both fighters by half a mil each. How is the competition in UFC HW division the best? Brock has one loss in five fights, Couture is almost 50, Shane and Cain only have one quality win.
by Gleb on Jul 31, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I’m sick of hearing about how AA is a ‘UFC castoff’. Dana said himself that he wanted to keep him, but Affliction was the highest bidder.
I still think Andre is a damn exciting fighter if he’d get back to throwing nasty combinations instead of the same safe little jab, straight-right, leg-kick combo that everyone knows is coming. It keeps a fighter at bay, but it doesn’t do enough damage. AA can mess people up if he changes his style, he is a very talented MMA boxer, with great hand speed and power.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 31, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
As much as I would love to see Fedor compete in UFC, there was too much speculation going around over the past week or so that really hurt his reputation. Not his stupid management but people like you that have no life and blog away 24/7 with their irrelevant thoughts (or brain farts) have spilled all this crap and tainted Fedor’s name. Does Anderson Silva speak english? How many Brazilian fighters speak english? Can you answer that? You do not need to look like a steroid monkey to be in great shape, he’s a machine and I don’t think that UFC officials would even mention anything in that regard. What does “being a nice guy” have to do with anything? :))) Another brain fart? Oh and if you look closely at AA fight – he was never buckled, he was just ducking, bopping and weaving the barrage of quick punches. He’s no superman but he’s a true artist in what he does and there is no need to prove anything to anyone. His legacy has been solidified and no Brock Lesnar or Frank Mir will ever achieve what he has.

White: the deal that White said “would change the UFC forever” is “very close” to happening and NOT the Tito Ortiz deal.

Finaly a conference call or “big announcement” worth having, thats a first, lovin all the news (minus the fedor BS, could care less now) bring on Vitor vs the 185 and eventual 205 division, vitor/wandi at ultimate 2009 if he gets past franklin!!!
by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 31, 2009 2:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
looks like the ufc will have to wait for fedor to have a freak loss somewhere. once he loses, the ufc will then be able to sign up him for a lot less money. i’m calling brett rogers vs. fedor, and everyone will be pulling for rogers to win the fight if they ever want to see fedor in the ufc

by JR on Jul 31, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
so tito would smash babalu and frank shamrock anyway, so instead he’s going to fight coleman (basically a 10 year older and slower version of tito) as a “test”? i’m confused…

I would hate to see Lesnar stay champion for a long time. Come on Fedor. Sign the deal.

of course it’s stuff we already knew. Most of us stay glued to mma forums all day, how could it get passed us?

Fedor is a punk..if he wanted in the UFC he would accept the offer and quit asking for UFC to co promote..He knows they are not going to do that..they would be stupid too do that..this is just his way too punk out..keep fighting middle weights u PUNK ASS…..

Honestly, as much as I hate to say it, I really don’t care if Fedor Emelianenko comes to the UFC. He and his cronnies can go cause another org to go under for all I care. I am certain Zuffa gave them the best offer any MMA fighter has EVER gotten, this I am sure.
If M-1 is so hard up on co-promoting, are they saying they want to invest their money into the UFC and spend their money to help put on shows whenever Fedor fights SO THEN they can reap the benifit’s of their desired co-piggy back whatever the fuck? Ok, this is the UFC – they run shit with and/or without you, Vadim. They do not need you. If they would’ve let Fedor wear 5, 26, 69, 100 M-1 logo’S…isn’t that not co-promotion in itself? Grrrr…I’m done wasting anymore thought on that subject until we see a clear cut result.
Any-who…Glad to see Hendo getting a rematch, not sure he’ll win but it is an awesome fight nonetheless. Dan has earned it. Belfort vs. Franklin should be at 195 or 205. I think I’ma have to go with Rich on this one. Both fight’s are outstanding and I can’t wait to see them unfold.
Tito “Fuckin” Ortiz…this guy just needs to win. WIN. He is a top notch Entertainer, has great coaching skills as seen on TUF 3 and had a lot of great bout’s when people didn’t even care about the sport. No matter how you slice it, this guy belongs in the UFC. All he needs to do is win and/or put on a good show before, during and after his fight’s.
Cheers!!!

Fedor said he has 3 more fights with M-1. They could easily be against Rogers, Overam and Roger Gracie. After that he will be free to come to the UFC.
by Casualfan on Jul 31, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He’s part owner of M-1. Unfortunately, I doubt that he will ever be disentangled from their meddling. If the UFC can’t come to some agreement with these bozos, I don’t think we’ll ever see him in the Octagon.
But don’t despair quite yet, grasshopper. All is not lost. There is a negotiating process underway. It is still entirely possible that M-1 will come to their senses and realize they can’t match the UFC’s offer elsewhere, and will cave with regard to their unrealistic co-promotional demands.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 31, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Once the UFC get’s into Japan and China Fedor’s value will drop huge and M1 will not survive unless Strikeforce helps them out but i can’t see there sponsors being stupid enough to let M1 take half the profits for one fighter even if it’s only when he fights. You know M1 is hurting when they are threatning Affliction with a law suite
by Puck Head on Jul 31, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fedor is pretty much done now. There are no fights at the caliber of the UFC now. Dana made a damn good point whether people like him or not…what on earth do M-1 have to offer UFC is terms of promotion? Nothing.
Fedor could have been coming out to the octagon to the Russian national anthem, draped in M-1 logos, with a cool few mill in his pocket, and everyone would have known who Fedor and M-1 are! What a waste. Give it a year, and the Russians will realise what fools they were passing up this opportunity.

Some other signings from the Affliction fallout:
L.C. Davis vs. Javier Vazquez will not be on the WEC bout
Mark Hominick as well.

2:55: More Tito talk. Dana and Tito are in a good place according to them. Tito picked the UFC because he would have smashed Babalu and Frank Shamrock in Strikeforce anyway. LMAO!!
It’s true but it’s funny because i can see Tito’s little smirk

On the M-1 Global thing that no one understood on here, or anywhere else that Dana said:
"People from other countries just don’t walk in and jump in business with the Fertitta brothers," he said. "There has to be full background checks and all kinds of crazy sh-t. It doesn’t work that way. It’s impossible; it will never happen."
Any dealings that Fertittas are involved in are subject to due diligence of the company that is being acquired or bought. The Fertittas cannot be involved in anything that has any type of organized crime connection or corruption connection because of their involvement in the Nevada Gaming industry.
Even if the UFC wanted to do the co-promotion to get Fedor signed, they have legal restrictions that won’t allow it. And I’m sure they explained that to the M-1 guys. But if the M-1 guys can’t understand that, and find some way to make arrangements to get the deal done, then good bye and good luck. The only people who know about Fedor are hard core fans like us, and most of us have lost a lot of respect for Fedor. The U.S. has the biggest market in the world for MMA, and it is growing faster here than anywhere else. Fedor can make a good living fighting cans in Japan, but he isn’t the best in my mind (and I think many others) anymore. But then again he never cared about things like the P4P rankings, his legacy, money or any of that stuff, and boy does that show after this week.
