Jeff Monson grounded and possibly incarcerated for graffiti-related stunt

Former number one UFC heavyweight contender, Jeff Monson, is facing up to 90 days in prison and a $21,894 fine after pleading guilty to malicious mischief for spray-painting an anarchist symbol on the Washington state Capitol building, according to Yahoo!Sports.

Perhaps more damaging is that fact that "The Snowman" had to surrender is passport, which essentially rules out an upcoming rematch against Pedro Rizzo at "Bitetti Combat" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sept. 12. In addition, the 37-year-old submission specialist had other plans to compete in Japan and Russia in early 2010.

Upon hearing the ruling, Monson asked the judge:

"Are you going to support my family now?"

Monson -- who was actually photographed by ESPN the Magazine committing the graffiti-related offense -- is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

Since his departure from the UFC, Monson has performed quite well against quality competition in lesser known events. In fact, the self-described anarchist has won seven of his last eight fights following the Rizzo loss back in 2007.

After stealing a controversial unanimous decision victory against Roy "Big Country" Nelson at "March Badness," Monson made short work of Russian gladiator Sergei Kharitonov at DREAM 8, forcing the Russian to tap with a north-south choke early into round one.

The American Top Team (ATT) product also recently made headlines when he tossed his name into the hat to fight Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: "Trilogy" on Aug. 1 when Josh Barnett was scratched because of a positive test for steroids. The entire event was eventually canceled.

With Affliction out of the fight business, and restricted from international travel, Monson has just a handful of choices at his disposal. One that he may want to consider is Strikeforce, which is looking for an opponent to challenge Fabricio Werdum on Aug. 15.

Get it while you can.

You should know better than to spray paint on a state capitol building?? Peaceful protest? Maybe start a blog or something. There’s other ways to get a point across.

That is a pretty ridiculous crime for vandalism. Have him pay restitution and end it. Even have him clean it himself or paint over it.

Instead of prison maybe send him to a reeducation camp where they ingrain in him the idea that rules and order are a good thing.

Those are just max sentence’s chance’s are he’ll get fined and do community service, maybe some type of counseling will be mandatory. Unless he’s got a history of this stuff and this is a repeat offense.

"Are you going to support my family now?" comment I think refers to them taking his passport. He can’t take any fights out of country until this is sorted. They don’t want him skippin town basically.

a lot of people are crazy frusterated with government right now. It’s a shame that more people don’t take an interest in discovering whats really happening in big gov + big business. It’s scary and the gen pop is willfully blind to it… Monson is an educated guy and happens to be striking out to get attention re: a cause he believes in. Read books people.

A penelty is due, Jeff knows that but taking away his ability to earn is a poor decision. People need compassion… you think this will ulitmately correct jeff or validate what he’s fighting against?

Ya know… not to get all politcal on ya.

It’s like I told my cousin when he was going through his nonconformist phase. If you really want to be a rebel you start a movement, a business, work to get legislation changed, or anything that might actually invoke change. You don’t die your hair and wear silly pants and think your affecting anything.

Likewise, you don’t spray paint a building and think you will have any effect. Beyond being stupid, it’s lazy on the part of your cause.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 30, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

What a dumbass. What did he expect? He allowed a major news publication to take a pic of him in the act!

by tylerS on Jul 30, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

big zino if monson is so educated on the political system he should of known what would happen when he did that to the state capital.

by Drew on Jul 30, 2009 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey I can’t defend the act. I like what Punch had to say. I thought about it and I agree in full.

Jeff could use his time a lot more wisely. I just think it was more of a poorly thought out photo op gone bad sort of deal.
Monson may have thought the publisher would have stepped up – in some capacity.

Anyway it doesn’t help anyone and no one learns anything from this consequence. I expect more from the judicial system officers – they could be a lot more creative and actually try to make a positive impact. IMO Jeffs not the only lazy one in this story.

by Big Zino on Jul 30, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Anarchists are only interested in causing trouble and bringing down society so I have no sympathy for that cause. I am really frustrated with governments but Anarchism is only going to make life worse for ordinary people.

What Monson did was stupid and childish and he is rightly being punished, though a fine and community service should be sufficient to go along with the embarrassment of this situation, a prison sentence would be ott. He’ll get his passport back when he’s sentenced, they don’t want him doing a Lee Murray. And whining to the judge about supporting his family is not going to do him any favours, Monson needs to learn when to shut up.

by David W-S on Jul 30, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

How old is this guy again?

Spray painting anarchy signs like some dumb-ass high school kid, and in front of a camera. Then he has balls to ask the judge if he’s going to support his family. True socialist there.

Monson is not even relevant in MMA. Quit giving this knucklehead press.

Surrender his passport and being unable to support his family, because of grafitti, which was politically motivated, what a dumb and biased judge, then again, that’s a requirement for the job, I wonder if he would withhold the guy’s passport if he was an accountant, or hell, even a basketball player.

by PW on Jul 30, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, monson is anti capitalism right up until its time to negotiate his pay for a fight, then the capitalist in him starts to show I am sure.

by James S on Jul 30, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

One could be anti-capitalist and still want to get paid fair market value. If you’re forced to live within a given system, you make the most of it. Being poor isn’t going to help further your anti-capitalist agenda and it sucks to boot.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 30, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Well said JJ. I don’t know monson personally, but i would assume he tries to negotiate the highest fair market value he can get out of a promoter. Which I am in full support of.

by James S on Jul 30, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

But a true anti-capitalist would favor equal pay for everyone fighting. So in order for his convenient belief system to be accurate then everyone on the card in every event he fights should all take their pay, put it into one kitty with everyone taking home an equal share. It doesn’t matter if your the headliner or the opening bout. It especially doesn’t matter if you win or lose either, because in Monson’s failed world view everyone loses.

by PW on Jul 30, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

PW, you’re assuming anti-capitalist means Eastern-bloc communist. It doesn’t. It could be as simple as wanting to abolish corporate rule and reform campaign financing. To provide basic services and education for all free of charge outside taxation.

And I’m not going to get into Marxism with you, but communism does NOT dictate equal pay for everyone at all. That is a myth foisterd on us by cold war propoganda. It dictates SOME base pay for everyone, and limits the growth of the wealthy to where their needs supercede the needs of the greater public.

I’m not defending communism here, just saying that the versions of it that we’ve seen implemented by the USSR and North Korea and their ilk are not what communism’s original creators envisioned or outlined. It was merely used as a vehicle for tyrants to wield power.

"We made it clear that Fedor, now and forever is part, even part owner, of M-1 and those two cannot be separated," Raimond said. "If the rest of M-1 is excluded from any kind of deal, it makes the deal difficult."
.
there is what I took intro! They are demanding all M-1 nobodies be signed also!

by kevin on Jul 30, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s obviously talking about the ownership group, hence the reason he mentions that Fedor is “even part owner”.

Although I can see through his wording how you could take it that way.

by introvert on Jul 30, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s wording though. Fedor as part owner (20%) has a stake in all M-1 fighters. I heard that this was a sticking point in the last negotiations too! They wanted all “red devil” fighters signed to UFC contracts!

Bullshit. Again. Prove it.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 30, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Kevin I compeletly agree with you that m-1 is being ridiculous with the co promoting thing. However, if they haven’t offered fedor what he’s worth as far as money goes than the ufc is also being ridiculous.

by kevin's nemesis on Jul 30, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

we don’t know what they offered! If it was more than other UFC fighters plus ppv% for Fedor and on top of it PPV% for finkle-douche, I repeat, what more does he need? A rim job and reach around… I got John’s #, I’m sure he’s willing!

by kevin on Jul 30, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Kevin,
I was also under the impression that the 5mil per fight was an estimate of what he would earn off of PPV sales. Raimond is saying the Fedor was never actually offered 5mil per fight.
I think the 30 mil figure could have some truth to it, but Raimond could “techinically” be correct in saying there was no 5mil per fight offer.

Why side with you and start bashing and hating on the UFC for next to no reason? maybe ALL of the heat is off M-1 Global but that doesn’t mean this is a failure on the part of the UFC either. Expecting the largest MMA promotion in the sport to sign all your fighters and partner up with your rinky dink business is ridiculous. Regardless of the $30 million figure, the opportunity alone was worth it. He goes to the UFC, he helps the largest mma org in the world be more successful, in turn making MMA EVERYWHERE more successful. Indirectly/directly helping his little promo crawl along and maybe start actually walking. 1.5+ mil ppl tune in to see what you have to say and see the M-1 global logo all over you and you still think no ones going to ask a few questions or be even slightly interested? Please.. I still put majority of the blame on M-1.

by O damn he got caught on Jul 30, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

When have I bashed the UFC during this thing? All I’ve been saying this whole time is that they are using the press to negotiate…how is that “bashing”? I’ll admit, I piss on Dana quite a bit, but I’ve been doing none of that on this subject whatsoever.

They used the radio show to negotiate…now it’s M-1’s turn. And quite frankly I think that they are closing in on something…but it ain’t nothing like Charmichael Dave said, and it won’t be anything like you guys are implying M-1 is demanding.

It will be something in between….and I’ll say it right here right now that they will cut a deal!!!!!!

So, while all you guys are believing everything you read, and saying “no fucking way they’re going to come to terms”…I’m saying they are closer than ever and will sign a deal.

by introvert on Jul 30, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, we don’t know if they are demanding that the UFC sign all the Red Devil fighters. I don’t think it would hurt to give a few of them a shot. If they are good, they stay, if they suck, see ya. As far as full co-promotional status goes, yes, it’s ridiculous. But I think these M-1 idiots realize that as well, and this is posturing to get the most they can out of this deal. They should be satisfied with their logo on clothes and banners.

This is probably the early stages of negotiation, and neither side is going to show all their cards yet. I am still cautiously optimistic, simply because these guys must realize they won’t get a better offer anywhere else.

Hope there are no hard feelings about yesterday bro. We always have awesome debates and we are both passionate in our stances. Cheers.

by kevin on Jul 30, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Until Fedor signs with the UFC then I’m not going to get my hopes up, the rumoured deal sounded excellent and if he rejected that offer then I’d lose respect for him. However, that may have just been a rumour and the salary was not as good as reported, though both sides have stated that he will be allowed to compete in Sambo so at least some part of it was true.

I have a feeling that this is going to be a long, slow process with the story changing daily, so there is no chance of a Fedor-Brock main event for 103.

As long as Fedor faces top competition as his career comes to a close then I will be happy, as it would be a shame for the best MMAst of all time to waste the end of his career on cans and freaks when he had the chance to fight quality opposition and cement his legacy. Right now, the best HWs are in the UFC, now that Affliction has gone bust, as Strikeforce and Dream have limited HW divisions, with few quality fighters worth Fedor’s time. That is why I want Fedor to sign with the UFC now, but I am not getting my hopes up until he signs on the dotted line and his first fight is announced. Hopefully M-1 won’t blow the biggest HW fights in MMA history for the fans.

by David W-S on Jul 30, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It was never an option for 103 anyway. Not when Mayweather is fighting that night, and Lesnar isn’t going to have a six-week training camp to prepare for Fedor. If it ever happens, this thing has New Years or Superbowl written all over it.

Well, that’s what happens when you basically strut up to a judge and say “Sentence me, asshole – I dare you!” That’s what this idiocy essentially amounts to.

If he cares about his family so damn much, he might want to actually think about them next time he has the brilliant idea to commit a crime, photographically document it, and then have the evidence printed and distributed to the public. What a clown…

He would have been better off getting loaded, hitting a couple of cars and leading the cops on a high-speed chase.

Alright guys, nurture away. Take this child under your wing and work him into something special.

We wouldn’t want to lose this gem to another board.

Vote Libertarian!!!

That is the only way changes will be made,

or we can just keep voting Dem and Rep, and complaining for the rest of our lives.
You cant make changes by getting yourself thrown in jail, Brilliant.!!

Hey Jeff, was it worth it? did you feel cool, rebelious when you marched up those steps and made your statement?

Now you might not be able to make a living and support your brood. Here’s an idea for a protest next time, just go buy a flag with a big A on it, stands for a hole, and wave it around in front of the building as you are free to do in this society.

you break the law, you go to jail, its reeeeeeeel simple.
