UFC 101: Josh Neer is 'sick of fighting guys who want to hit and run'

Props: Fight Hype
Quoteworthy:
"I'm expecting a tough fight. He's well-rounded a lot like I am, but I think he's more like a Jiu Jitsu guy more than a standup guy. I think he will stand a little bit to set up his shots to take me down. I think it has the potential to [be fight of the night]. I think this fight could be over in the first round. That's my plan, to end it in the first round! I'm prepared for anything that he has to offer, but I would prefer to keep it standing. I'm so sick of fighting guys that want to hit and run. I want to fight guys that want to stand and bang, but they don't want to stand and bang. They want to stand and run. I want to fight someone that wants to fight and not someone that just wants to hit me and run. We'll see if he sticks to his word because he's been saying that he's going to stand and bang with me, so we'll see if he sticks to that."
UFC lightweight standout Josh Neer prepares for another tough test in the 155-pound division when he locks horns with Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101 on August 8. "The Dentist," who is coming off back-to-back "Fight of the Night" awards against Mac Danzig and Nate Diaz, may lose the opportunity to earn his third straight if he sticks to the plan and finishes "Batman" in the first round. Easier said than done against the crafty jiu-jitsu veteran.

It would be interesting to see Neer and Gray Maynard arguing this point. I believe Maynard just made the point recently about the fake machismo behind the “stand and bang” philosophy. While I like a good brawl, I do agree that Neer’s point is kind of illogical.
If that’s all you want to do, then it’s not really MMA… it’s a different sport… it’s rock-em sock-em robots.

wasn’t that Mark Dellograte telling Miguel Torres?
I do agree with you though!
by kevin on Jul 29, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Maynard made the point that, hey, a win is a win, even if all you do is hold a guy down for 15 minutes.
by PW on Jul 29, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
lol, thats what I was thinking, but didn’t know if collin was right, I don’t want to discredit anyone!

If Mac would have had that strategy and made it technical he would have Tko’d Neer and i would have loved it!.. this guy trying to be gangsta is soo annoying, no teeths, and nothing in his head all he wants is to be demolished!

fuk off! danzig is done in the ufc and neer is a good fighter. i bet noone expected him to pull off the sub, i no i didnt. this is what makes a good fighter. he’s younger he’s improving and i think he’s going to brutalize batman and finish it in the second. wether by tko or sub.
GUARANTEED THIS FIGHT IS A WAR!

isnt neer the same guy that was getting the shit kicked out of him on the feet by guillard so he took him down and triangled him.
by Drew on Jul 29, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
the fight was in danger of being stoped because of his cut, and he got taken down and sunk the triangle in……and whoever just said danzig shoulda won by ko needs to go watch that fight again because neer looked great
by JG on Jul 29, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
i think neer should go back to welterweight and gfight chris lytle lol
by JG on Jul 29, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Neer needs to realize that this is the Ultimate FIGHTING Champoinship, not the Ultimete Brawling Championship. These days, if you don’t stand directly in front of your opponent and swing wildly away trading bombs, you’re a pussy.
What a joke. I like the fact that some talented stand-up is starting to emerge in MMA, where guys utilize angles and footwork and weave in and out of the pocket to land strikes without getting hit themselves. I find a good tactical kickboxing match more entertaining than two talentless hacks swinging away at each other like they’re in the parking lot of a shitty nightclub.
The only fighters that have a problem with true technical stand-up being utilized in the Octagon are the scrubs that have no technical striking pedigree and can’t possibly beat a guy who actually has some skill and knows how use it in an intelligent fashion. Obviously nobody wants to watch somebody run away all night, but there are very few fighters who actually do that. Brawling with an unskilled fightter is just giving them a great chance of beating you. It’s stupid, and so is Neer for suggesting that using skill is somehow unmanly and something to be frowned upon.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 29, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Neer would have been TKO’d, just look how horrible Neer looked in the standup! If Mac had his head on his shoulders when he fought he would have kept his distance and picked him apart, not getting into a slugging contest…
by RoBerto on Jul 29, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions
i agree wit you Jeremy, UFC is not a stand up sport like boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, etc. It’s pretty idiotic of Neer making statements like that and he’s not even a phenomenal stand up fighter, more of a brawler obviously. i don’t get why guys oppose againts jujitsu, wrestling, and ground n pound, i mean look at Cain Velasquez who’s a hit and runner threw pretty impressive ground n pound performance while Kongo heavily relies on stand up that shows ground n pound is effective. it’s funny when guys says guys who don’t wanna stand and bang don’t have balls but those who don’t wanna go to the ground really don’t have balls to suffer from poundings and submission attempts. f*ck Neer, i hope he gets some ground n pound til lights out.

i like neer hes a tought fighter with bjj skills he just rather have a brawl…hes fought so many guys and alot of them were at welterweight…hes a tough fight for almost everyone in the lightweight division
by JG on Jul 29, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Ya it that fight was in danger of being stopped because of the cut and also because neer was in danger of getting ko’d. Watch that fight again he had no answer for guillard on the feet. If he wants a stand up fight rematch him with guillard, I will bet 100 that neer goes for a takedown in that fight JG.
by Drew on Jul 29, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Neer’s an idiot, not only did he get caught drink driving, now he thinks that the only way to be exciting is having a mindless brawl. There is no techinque involved in standing and banging, all of the guys who fight in that style are going to have short, unsuccessful careers, give me smart fighters like Lyoto and Anderson over mindless thugs anyday.
by David W-S on Jul 29, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly what we need – another “let’s stand and bang” idiot. Too bad coz he’s one of the few fighters who’s very well rounded and equal in all his skills even though they’re not by any means at a high level.
by NameNotRequired on Jul 29, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, lets just stand there and bang…ever wonder why Neer talks so slow??? Maybe he’s gone toe to toe too many times….. The dude sounds like he’s half retarded or something. I do like to watch him scrap though!
by allamerican on Jul 29, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions
soo true!!!! " hu hu hii ma ma my nnaa name iis jooosssh neer, eh errrr emmm " haha but he is deff tough! Just sounds like a retard in the process.

This is good fight to start the night out for 101. I am way more excited about 101 than I was for 100, that’s for sure. :-P

NEWS***Dana will announce the signing of Fedor on Friday at the press conference.

Well Brock, Fedor and John I guess counts as three dudes, but that’s as high as I’m going!
by PW on Jul 29, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
There’s no Effing way Lesnar fights Brock on two months rest.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 29, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
^^^fights ‘Feds’ on two months rest. Yeesh.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 29, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think pounding on Mir for 7 minutes really took that much out of him. And it’s not as if he could watch film on Fedor for an extra month and suddenly pinpoint a weakness. If Dana gets this deal done Bock will take the fight.
by PW on Jul 29, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Part of the deal may be contingent on him getting a fight ASAP, considering he just had a fight for this weekend cancelled.
by BNF on Jul 29, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Heard this a few times, normally I take these announcements as fact but considering that it’s Fedor I’ll believe it when I see it. Fedor-Brock would be the biggest MMA fight in the sports history so I’d be amazed if they put it on 103, considering it’s pretty short notice and is up against Mayweather-Marquez. I hope this news is true but I’m not getting my hopes up until Fedor and Brock appear at a UFC press conference.
by David W-S on Jul 29, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Forrest and BJ are probably my 2 favorite fighters, so I am much more personally invested in 101. But no, maybe not fight for fight. This is a good scrap and I am also looking forward to the Grove/Almeida.
by BNF on Jul 29, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
I like Neer a lot. That being said he’s a crazy mofo and only an idiot would just stand there and get hit which is why I envy Machida’s style more.
by kibbled_bits on Jul 29, 2009 11:25 AM EDT reply actions
nothing like a arrogant douche who thinks ppl have to do what he wants to fight, i want batman to submit him dumass..
by guyverbob on Jul 29, 2009 11:32 AM EDT reply actions
Well I guess we should take strategies out of MMA as well, they don’t belong there..

F**k off you w**ker JOhn G. Unless you can quote a OFFICAL source, you are repearted unconfirmed rumours that have been on every MMA message board since Friday. I am bored of this shit, lets see on Friday what Dana says.
by Casual fan on Jul 29, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions
Yea, ive heard that rumor is VERY false, I trust Josh Gross from SI.com more than I do than any blogger, no offense John G, if you end up being right then I am sorry

i’ll take a stand and bang fight over a 15 minute gay porn movie anytime
by HellaHectic on Jul 29, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions
Stand and Bang fights have literally ruined several fighters careers. I cant tell you how many fights Ive seen where the more technically sound fighter loses because he feels obligated to “Stand and Bang” Aka Sherk, Gurgel, Davis and the list goes on. You should fight to your strengths, if you have the particular skill set to win a fight, then win the damn fight.
by Dave on Jul 29, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with Sherk and Gurgel but Davis is a plug that can just stand and bang. I cant believe that Sherk in his last few fights has tried to stand and bang. He would win if he just takes his guy down and controls him on the ground. I cant say much about Gurgel cause I cant stand him, glad he is gone and dont care if I ever see him fight again.
by Spyder on Jul 29, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Win or lose, give him Spencer Fisher – he may regret this.
by Johnboy on Jul 29, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah mate…its called skill. You know, martial arts. That sport your in.
Mr Neer, you sir, are an idiot.
by UK_Chris on Jul 29, 2009 11:57 AM EDT reply actions
The “art” of fighting is about inflicting damage, while taking as little as possible.
I don’t get comments like this. If your opponent can hit you, but you can’t hit your opponent then maybe you need to worry about your game and not his.
by jtc2112 on Jul 29, 2009 11:57 AM EDT reply actions
Sounds like Neer shuld be Boxing for a living!
I hope he gets taken down and loses a decision!
a boring one!
by badguy on Jul 29, 2009 12:03 PM EDT reply actions
Josh Neer is just a meathead, I have a hard time believing that he is still in the UFC!!!!
by Spyder on Jul 29, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions
yeah i agree, hopefully he some gets ground n pound beating til lights out, get cut from UFC and go to Rage in the Cage where all crappy fighters belong.
by Texican on Jul 29, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions
What does Neer want??? someone to stand there and let him punch him in the head. GEEEEZ he is one of the biggest idiots in the UFC!!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOHISSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
by Spyder on Jul 29, 2009 12:22 PM EDT reply actions
If Brock vs Fedor is UFC 103 I will be so pissed. I almost got tickets to the event but there was no real headliner. I will be in Dallas that week.
UGH I am happy to see that fight but man it sucks if that happens because I could have been there live
by mr-fancypants on Jul 29, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions
Its not hit and run and called fighting smart. Just look at boxers they probobly have the endourance to punch 10x more times than MMA fighter and yet they dont just stand there and bang or throw down the whole time. This comment is just stupid. If he wants to throw down the whole time then he needs to work on his angles to keep his opponent in front of him.
by Texasboy on Jul 29, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions
Im pretty sure Neer knows he’s an idiot, so i find it hard to hate him as much as i used to! His amateur fights sounded crazy!
