Paul 'Semtex' Daley signs four-fight contract with UFC

Former Elite XC number one welterweight contender and Cage Rage champion, Paul Daley, is the latest fighter to join the deep Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) talent-rich 170-pound pool, according to Fighters Only magazine.
The report indicates that "Semtex" signed a four-fight contract to compete inside the Octagon. No possible opponent or date for his debut is known at this time; however, UFC 105 at the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14 would seem to be a good fit for the Nottingham native.
He'll certainly be more than ready -- Daley was training to collide with Jay "The Thoroughbred" Hieron at Affliction: "Trilogy" this weekend before the event was scrapped.
Daley -- who boasts a sick Muay Thai game and has the ability to finish his opponents at any time — has 16 career stoppages because of strikes in his 21 wins (75 percent). The British brawler most recently put his stamp on Junior Barata, needing less than three minutes to take care of business.
He has now won his last two contests after dropping two out of three to Nick "The Goat" Thompson and Jake Shields prior to that. Daley holds notable career wins over Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Duane Ludwig, John Alessio, Mark Weir and many others.

who’s marcus davis fighting? it’d be nice if they were smart and put him against davis or lytle or hardy or just someone that will keep it standing with daley.

About time!! He’s one guy that needed to be in the UFC for their UK cards instead of 2-0 scrubs from Cage Rage. More than talented and actually cares about at least training his ground unlike your drew mcfedries of the world.

wut? what evidence you got for daley training a ground game?
by JB on Jul 30, 2009 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions
Semtex signs with the UFC and there’s 34 comments and not one from John…..something is amiss.
by Crowls on Jul 30, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Good observation Crowls…I do remember John always hyping Paul Daley up.

JB: I’ve seen him training his ground game.
If you look at where he was two years ago Jake shields would have sub’d him in 20 secs.
He is improving but will never be awesome.

“Semtex signs with the UFC and there’s 34 comments and not one from John…..something is amiss”
That’s because he’s too busy jerking off.

Great another UK can to take up another slot on every UK card for the next 5 years. I can’t wait UFC 105 Semtex Daley vs Marcus Davis to determine who’s 73rd in line for a shot at GSP.

Attack, you are the most negative poster on here. Why has everything got to be bad news?
Semtex is an exciting fighter full stop, I am hyped to see him fight.

I hear what your sayin A-dawg, but even if a guy will never be a contender, if he can fight, and fight well, and is able to be placed in good match-ups, it doesn’t bother me. For example, even if Nick Diaz would never get a shot at the title in the UFC, his fights will always be good to watch. They should bring him back to the UFC and keep him there.
Back to the point, title fights are good, but good match-ups are even better. A title fight is, in itself, usually an excellent match-up, but not always; Silva/Cote, Silva/Leites weren’t the best.

Maybe Nick J if you’d been to every UK show like I have, you’d get a bit tired of the cards being clogged up with British cans! I’ve seen semtex fight live at cage rage 23 and I wasn’t impressed. The guy has no wins over anyone in the top 50 of any division and I couldn’t care less about seeing guys like that, particularly if they’re rammed down my throat because they happen to be British.
by attakdog on Jul 30, 2009 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Nick Diaz isn’t the greatest example Kobajack, the guy does have some decent wins on his CV, unlike Daley but I see where you’re coming from.
Put yourself in my shoes Kobajack. You pay your money every time to see a numbered UFC show and they fill it up with British cans who couldn’t get on the undercard of a FightNight show in the states, wouldn’t you start to get a bit p!ssed off? Some of these cans might be entertaining to watch but only in the same way as two tramps fighting over a sandwich is entertaining.
I long for the days of 70, 75 and 80 when British fans actually meant something to the UFC.

I can’t see why a fight with Marcus Davis wouldn’t be good.
by Kobajack on Jul 30, 2009 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions
But for you, well, if one ain’t impressed with a fighter, one ain’t impressed with a fighter. I don’t know much about him. I’m neither here nor there. Word.
by Kobajack on Jul 30, 2009 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ve seen Marcus Davis 47 times now Kobajack lol, that’s why I couldn’t care less about that fight!
by attakdog on Jul 30, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ve been to 4 UK events and agree there are a lot of UK cans padding them out but Semtex doesn’t fall into that catogry.
by Nick J on Jul 30, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions
I believe he does Nick, the WW division is stacked and he’s nowhere near top 20. The guy’s a decent striker granted but has zero ground game and will get heavily exposed for this against any remotely top performer.
We shall agree to differ on this one Nick J.
by attakdog on Jul 30, 2009 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree attakdog…Semtex is the WW version of Cheick Kongo.
by Buster Bluth on Jul 30, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know dog, Semtex is a decent signing imo and is a much better fighter than the Paul Taylors of the world. I agree that the UK cards have too many British cans but Daley has a decent name and has faced some great competition. I say give him a chance, his ground game isn’t great but he’s still an exciting fighter and if he works on his weaknesses then he has potential to be a solid fighter in the UFC.
Daley-Davis would be a fun fight to watch and would have a decent story seeing how Daley and Hardy are teammates and Davis still thinks he won that fight.

He should train at Wolfslair. I hear their wrestling coach is pretty good.
by Synyster on Jul 29, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah so is there boxing coach… and they have the best gameplans man, they make couture, and greg jackson look foolish
by randy murders on Jul 29, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I know, like circling into an opponents power hand. Who would have thought of that?? BRILLIANT!
by Synyster on Jul 29, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah and keeping your guard down at your waist and eating the punch is even better… that was embarrasing
by RoBerto on Jul 30, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
and trying to shoot for a takedown in the fight was pretty bad too….
by eric on Jul 30, 2009 5:41 AM EDT up reply actions
What are you smoking randy? Their gameplans suck! Rampage just throws bombs these days, and eats leg kicks, and Bisping circles into Hendo’s monster right hand. Couture and Jackson are the best IMO! I hope you were being sarcastic. :)
by LJ on Jul 30, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Any UFC level guy with a ground game = Loss for Daley. Fun guy to watch though.

daley vs marcus david at 105 !!!
also some good fights daley vs hardy, daley vs alves, and daley vs swick
by Jared on Jul 29, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions
all fights daley gets subbed in the first round in
tho i do think if davis stood with him he might be able to tko davis and would knock hardy’s headoff
by randy murders on Jul 29, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Yep both train at rough house. No fight betweent them two on the horizon.
by Nick J on Jul 30, 2009 7:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Daley v. alves would be SICK!!! that would be a fuckin muay thati war, but I am kinda hoping to see Alves v. Condit
by charr552 on Jul 29, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
daley looked small compared to shields. alves would make him look like a child. lol. seriously? i’d fear for daley’s life against alves.
by JB on Jul 30, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions
is daley’s ground game that bad, shields destroys everyone on the ground. he’s no demian maia but i dont think he’s gonna end up like houston or Mcfederies .
by tim on Jul 29, 2009 8:45 PM EDT reply actions
You’re right. Daleys defensive ground game is actually pretty respectable. Getting subbed by the goat or shields is common place. No shame in those 2 losses.
by Machine on Jul 29, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions
gsp, alves, koscheck, fitch, hughes, serra, even marcus davis, and mike swick have great ground games
by randy murders on Jul 29, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
But some of those guys would keep probably try to keep it standing, which would give him a chance.

This guys pretty fun to watch. He’s never going to contend for a belt, so they can use him to match up with up and coming strikers. He’s fights would be a great potenial undercard fight to fill in on their PPV’s.
by MXN on Jul 29, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions
Would love to see him fight Rumble, Davis or Hardy at some point – all guys who like to bang. In his first fight I could see him fighting Matt Brown maybe.

Solid signing, could make for some exciting fights.

I’m just waiting for the signing of the emperor man!
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Jul 30, 2009 4:11 AM EDT up reply actions
good signing. Dana should talk to him about dropping to LW. he is only 5’6
by Bill Maher on Jul 29, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions
he comes in barely at 170. not disciplined enough, i imagine.
by Synyster on Jul 29, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions
as in, being overweight and barely making it.
by Synyster on Jul 29, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions
5’6 and 170? Put him against Serra, he will tap his ass!
by Zach on Jul 29, 2009 10:41 PM EDT reply actions
hah and even THAT was understated…that fight would be over before it started…serra would have him tapping at weigh-ins thats such a mismatch
by magicmike on Jul 30, 2009 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions
This is a great addition. The WW division needs a great striker. I’m not expecting him to take the title but he brings a lot of spice to the division
by zachy on Jul 29, 2009 11:37 PM EDT reply actions
prediction: he gets cut after his third straight loss. the only people he beats are tuf cast-offs. anyone with mild respectability beats him; yoshida, karo, kim. guys he might beat are matt brown, goulet, paul taylor…
by JB on Jul 30, 2009 1:33 AM EDT reply actions
daley is a good thai guy who held on the cage rage title for years, he’s still very young but he’s what he is, a thai fighter. My prediction is a premature cut ala foupa pokam
by antisarko on Jul 30, 2009 7:22 AM EDT reply actions
Stick him against Marcus Davies to headline 105 undercard. Davies talks about his great boxing, Semtex would make a bigger mess of his face than Hardy did. I saw Semtex fight last year in Nottingham and looked sic. Excellent striker.
