Nick Diaz vs Jay Hieron Strikeforce welterweight title fight slated for Aug. 15

Foul-mouthed fightmonger Nick Diaz will face International Fight League (IFL) veteran Jay Hieron for the newly-created Strikeforce welterweight championship at the "Carano vs. Cyborg" event from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on Aug. 15, MMAmania.com has learned.

Hieron -- who was training to fight Paul "Semtex" Daley this weekend at Affliction: "Trilogy" before the promotion folded -- apparently beat out Phil Baroni as a late replacement for Joe Riggs, who was hospitalized and forced out of the rematch against Diaz last week.

Diaz comes into this fight on an absolute tear. Aside from dismantling the clearly-overmatched Scott Smith at June’s "Lawler vs. Shields" event, the Cesar Gracie-disciple busted up the legendary Frank Shamrock en route to a second round TKO at the last San Jose-based event back in April.

The Stockton, Calif., native is riding a five-fight win streak and has finished each of his opponents in dominating fashion.

Star-divide

Hieron is also currently enjoying a five fight winning streak, including his most recent first round knockout win over the previously unbeaten Jason High on the Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" card back in January.

The Xtreme Couture trainee was a staple under the now defunct IFL, fighting nine times for the promotion in a span of just under two years. Since then, however, "The Thoroughbred" has only been in action twice, defeating High earlier this year and also out-pointing Chris Kennedy en route to a unanimous decision victory at a "Super Fights MMA" event last October.

Hieron and Diaz were actually rumored to face off at the Strikeforce event back in June; however, the promotion instead ended up booking Scott Smith as Diaz’s opponent for the event. It was a fight that Hieron wanted real bad at the time.

That’s because he was part of KJ Noons corner the night he and Diaz had that melee in the cage following KJ’s technical knockout win over Yves Edwards at Elite XC: "Return of the King." There’s even video footage of Hieron throwing a punch at the Cesar Gracie-trained black belt.

Now he may get another opportunity to do that several times over, and much more, on Aug. 15.

Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" will feature a 145-pound title fight between female fighting sensation Gina "Conviction" Carano and her nemesis Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos as well as a lightweight title unification bout between reigning champ Josh "The Punk" Thomson and interim champ Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez.

well mania wont post what i wrot but Fedor got offered 6 fight deal for 30 million dollars, He would get an immediate tittle shot, he would have been able to still compete in sambo, he would have been able to wear as manny m1 global logos as he wanted and on top of the salary he would have had a % of ppv buys and M1 global would have gotten a % of ppv buys to, but they still refused the deal becouse they would only do it to co promote, I think fedor needs to stop being an idiot and listening to these stupid m1 people that is to good of a deal to pass of I know he was the best in pride without a doubt but since prides demise he really faced much of a challenge at all and dont say Arlovski or tim cause we all know when they were champions the UFC heavyweight division was a joke, if Fedor really doesnt sign he will quickly become irrevelant the opposite would happen if he signs with the UFC Im a huge fedor fan, I know he was the best but if he thinks he still is(and im not saying hes not) he needs to come and face the best it almost seems like now that he is regarded as the best his trying to dodge tuff competition and dont say hes not becouse that deal is almost unheard of in the UFC!!!!!!!!! If he doesnt sign i hope he goes to japan and loses to a can!!!!!!

goes to show fedor knows he can’t compete with the real top HW’s !!! he is a loser!!!!!
this post is for you JJ
BROCK WOULD CRUSH FEDOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by TheDragon on Jul 30, 2009 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

no these guys are bringing up the facts. when you get faced with an offer like that and you refuse well your a big fuckin pussy. fedor should be in the ufc fighting the best but he chooses to stay away from the cage and continue fighting ufc washouts. only good heavyweights who have never been in the ufc are rogers, overeem, and i guess yvel in terms of striking. if he wants to continue fighting washouts for the rest of his career thats his choice. i just hope someone outside of the ufc knocks him the fuck out so he has no markability and just fades away in the mma world. no casual fan will ever no who he is, and the hardcores will no he was that guy who was on top of the mma world and chose not to fight the best.

Cant decide but Hieron UD for now. Diaz has looked great lately because he was facing mediocre opposition. His game looks brilliant against them. His wrestling still sucks so he should get at the worst LNP’d here.

by NameNotRequired on Jul 29, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

THANK YOU. there is a huge change Diaz loses this.

by Bill Maher on Jul 29, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

actually theres a small chance. Diaz will more than likely kill Hieron.

by jaykiz on Jul 29, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

There is always a chance fro a guy like Heiron, but Diaz wins this fight 8 times out of 10.

by Cut the Blue Wire on Jul 30, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed NNR, except for the stuff about Heiron winning. Diaz will take him.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 29, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

DIAZ is going to kill this chump, hes got go back to the UFC and fight a real champ cause thats where he belongs. Hes in another level fighting in these other promotions.

by TaPouT on Jul 30, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Hieron is no joke, he got nastly destroyed by gsp but that was while back, plus he’s in good camp I think he can pull it off.

by phenomenal angel on Jul 29, 2009 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

Diaz wins by mistquito bites lol naw diaz by submission 2 or third round

by king criminales on Jul 30, 2009 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

I call Diaz taking this fairly easily.

by SiamMMA on Jul 30, 2009 12:35 AM EDT reply actions

I am so tired of Nick Diaz. Seriously I can’t wait to see Nick get Knocked Out…no saying that jay heiron will do it, just saying i want to see it happen one way or another.. The way he taunts people and disrespects his opponents… lets just say i would never go to a diaz mma school and have an asshole instructor… nate diaz just looks annoying.

by drowzy on Jul 30, 2009 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

They’re a couple of pea brains, but I find Nick amusing for some reason even though he is a tool.

by DAVE A on Jul 30, 2009 3:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey Mania and Jesse,

Just read on bloody elbow that the following was offered to Fedor and he STILL turned it down!

 - The UFC offered Fedor a 6 fight, 30 million dollar contract. That’s 5 mil a fight

- The UFC offered Fedor an immediate title shot

- Lesnar/Fedor would be the biggest PPV in MMA history (we assume), and the UFC offered M-1 Global a cut of the PPV on top of Fedor’s purse.

- Fedor was free to wear as many M-1 logoed items as he wished.

- The UFC also relented on allowing Fedor to compete in combat sambo.

Apparently, for good or bad, M-1 refuses to sign a deal unless the UFC agrees to co-promote.

by MMAFanatic on Jul 30, 2009 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

I wrote the exact same shyt like an hour ago and mania wouldnt post it I even wrote my opinion

by Nor Cal Mexican (formely Philicutioner) on Jul 30, 2009 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

SAME. copied and pasted the exact same thing and was ignored..

by newfie on Jul 30, 2009 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

anyway heres what I wrote Fedor is a dumb ass if he doesn’t take this deal, I mean I know he was a the best heavyweight a few years ago (not saying hes not anymore) but he has been facing cans and and not top tier competition, (and dont say tim and arlovski becouse when they were UFC champions the UFC heavyweight division was a joke and there last perfomances have proved that) I mean if people still think he is the best he should be facing the best, it kind of seems like since he is now considered the best he wants to dodge tuff competition to keep hes standing as the best and is dodging the UFC fighters and don’t say he is not becouse that is the most exclusive contract and someone would either have to be a dumbass or scared of the competition to pass that, Im a huge Fedor fan but if he really passed on this offer he is a dumbass and deserves to be controlled by the m1 global russian if he trully passed on this I hope he goes to Japan and gets beat by a can !!!!!

by Nor Cal Mexican (formely Philicutioner) on Jul 30, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

WOW!

That is indeed an UNHEARD of deal!

FEDOR is either legally mentally handicapped or just plain ducking IF HE DOES NOT take this deal!

again…..WOW!

That is the MMA version of a “Money” Mayweather type deal!

and say he were to fight 3 time PER YEAR for 2 years he wuld be making 15-20 MILLION annually (for 2 years granted).

THAT IS as much as the HIGHEST paid CELEB gets for their movies!

one more time…..WOW!

by SoCalStunNa on Jul 30, 2009 5:09 AM EDT up reply actions

now tell me he isnt ducking comp . . . please tell me this some fedor fanatic . . . rediculous!!!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 30, 2009 6:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Is this true? Can some1 actually confirm that he was offered 30 million for 6 fights? He is truly scared of losing if that’s true. And I love fedor. But he’s losing marks imo. Especially w/ the offered ppv % and m1 global clothing ok’d

by Daniel worby on Jul 30, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

From a business point of view this looks like a good signing. I am sure they got him very cheap, maybe $5 to $10k per fight ?

He is the type of guy who will step in on a week or two notice and at least provide an entertaining fight.

by Casualfan on Jul 30, 2009 3:01 AM EDT reply actions

diaz k.o round 2

by pjh on Jul 30, 2009 4:18 AM EDT reply actions

diaz wins if he takes it to the ground even with hieron’s wrestling but diaz jiu jitsu is on another planet….if it stays standing jay’s muay thai will get the better of diaz…the last striker diaz faced was kj noons and we all know what happened and i dont even like noons….shamrock is not a striker….jay wins standing and diaz gets the win on the ground

by hokaze on Jul 30, 2009 8:38 AM EDT reply actions

UR COMMENT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MAKES SENSE IN THIS WHOLE PAGE I REALLY HOPE NICK WINS

What a sad title fight.

by ~Savage~ on Jul 30, 2009 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

Really? There has been WAY worse title fights and Nick could clear out 80% of the UFC WW division without question.

Jay Heiron has been around and is very dangerous for anybody.

Not even close to sad.

by Big Zino on Jul 30, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Who has Heiron beat to deserve a title shot?? Not that there’s really anyone else, but thats my point…sad!!

by ~Savage~ on Jul 30, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

no he couldnt nick cant handle good wrestlers.

by Jared on Jul 30, 2009 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

If that FEDOR contract offer is legit, then we all know what Danas interview will say 2moro. More f bombs then ever and a lot of calling FEDOR a pussy 4 turnin it down. Until I heard this contract I wasn’t sure they were offering enough, now I’m 100% sure they are.

Its also very hard for me being a huge FEDOR fan to stand by him and defend this. I can’t. And I’m not gonna bother arguing w/all the Brock lovers cause I can’t win after this.

Mania!? Do an article plz on his contract allegations. Ugh FEDOR ya putz.

by Daniel worby on Jul 30, 2009 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

Hieron is a legit fighter. I think it will be a good test for Diaz. I still have to take Diaz in this one but Hieron is not a chump.

And for anyone who trains MMA or does MMA workouts , youtube Hieron and you can see an awesome workout he goes through while training. I have stolen some of his secrets..But to my dismay, I am still not even close to his level, lol
