Gray Maynard has a plan: Kick Roger Huerta's ass on Sept. 16

Props: MMAWeekly

Quoteworthy:

"I’m trying to learn how I can avoid (getting caught). If I get caught, then I’m an idiot. Because that’s part of the sport: defense. Blocking stuff, movement, which I think a lot of guys don’t do. You see offense everywhere, but if you can just move a little bit, it’s a lot easier. I’m here to win. (I’m not going to say), ‘I think it’s going to be a bloody, an unbelievable throwdown [and] we’re going to get the fight of the night check.’ To be honest, I don’t even want it to be close. I want to kick this dude’s ass. That’s the plan."

Undefeated UFC lightweight Gray Maynard looks to bully his record up to 8-0 when he collides with former UFC 155-pound sensation Roger Huerta at UFC Fight Night 19 from the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 16. "El Matador" is returning to the Octagon to satisfy the remaining fight on his current deal after declining a five-fight contract extension to pursue a career in acting and modeling. He may go out on a high note if he shows some of the ability that took him to an impressive 20-2-1. Or the former Ultimate Fighter 5 (TUF) contestant could deport him to the land of also-rans with his suffocating wrestling. Who ya got?

Go Maynard POWER!

by Kobajack on Jul 26, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

noway he’s so boring, ugly, no personality, no reason to like him.. he needs to lose!.. and even if he beats Roger, Roger is still the winner!

by RoB on Jul 26, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pfft. Hardly! That’s harsh, man. Although, I don’t think it will be one-sided, I still think Maynard should take this one. And if he wins, well, he’s the winner. Yeah, Roger is still a winner if he loses because he can go and get cast as Zorro 2000 or something and make really good D-grade movies.

Thank God! Finally a fighter who doesn’t think “Standing and Banging” is cool- Dominance over excitiment, technical superiority over all other garbage. Let me get on that wagon ufcaddict, I officially like Maynard now! funny thing is that i actually liked his fight with No Love.

Lay ’n Gray can go suck eggs.

Huerta’s been given this fight to kill his marketability, Maynard is a horrible match-up for him. He is going to repeatedly takedown Huerta and win another decision through Lay and Gray. This fight was not made to give Huerta an exciting fight, it was done simply to have him lose in a boring fight in as convincing fashion as possible.

Used to be a Huerta fan until he decided that he didn’t want to be a fighter after all. Playing a new character in a horrible film about a video game where he’ll get 2 scenes at most is hardly going to lead to a successful acting career.

WAR HUERTA! im a fan for life ever since the guida fight. that fight is tied for me in comeback victory with smith-sell. my pick is huerta by ko from a knee. maynard will try for the takedown and huerta will get the big ko ruining the ufcs plans sending him out with a loss

by Jared on Jul 26, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya Im with you. Huerta has had so many exciting fights. Now he is wanting to take off I hope Maynard smashes his face and ruins all chances of modeling.

Dana needs to match up Lay ’n Gray with Huggie Bear and have a promotional tie-in with the Bruno movie.

you could have sasha baron cohen as the ring card guy in between rounds, attract a whole new slew of gay fans to the sport… i think i just puked a little in my mouth

by brendan on Jul 26, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

PW: THat is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time (just saw Bruno)! hahaha

LIke a few people posted, this isnt supposed to be an exciting fight! Its Dana being Dana with his spiteful crap. No crap Maynard doesnt want fight of the night. He doesnt need it cause Dana will cut him a fat bonus check anyway for putting an L on Huerta’s record!

I dont like Gray but my money will be on him. Stylistically its a bad fight for Roger and with the long lay off and cage rust, its going to be too much to overcome!

by JOhn G on Jul 26, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m a Maynard Fan too ufcaddict. I don’t even think this one is going to be close. Gray is going to maul him in the stand up and GNP Huerta. Gray is going to kill Roger’s modeling careerby smashing his face in. Trust me, this one isn’t going to be close.

by DB on Jul 26, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve been a fan of Gray since the TUF show. He was one of my favorite guys, along with Joe Lauzon, Nate, and Matt Wiman.

I also don’t think that he’s just going to lay on Huerta. With his last fight in mind, I think Gray is going to stand a bit with Huerta, but if/when he gets tagged, he will take him down. Huerta’s defensive grappling isn’t that well, so I think Gray is going to maul him there.

Gray Maynard FTW!!!

Plus all the training with Shawn Tompkins. Look at the improvement in his hands from the Clementi fight to the Jim Miller fight. And If he continues to improve at that rate who knows how good he’ll be. I too became a fan of his on TUF 5 (the best season so far) and have enjoyed watching him improve. Add the fact that Roger Huerta will not have fought in over a year by fight time and the ring rust that comes with that kind of layoff you get a one sided beatdown.

by DB on Jul 26, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maynard is boooooooring and is not in the top 5 so I hope Zoolander kicks his ass

by Big D on Jul 26, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you watch the Miller fight? And if he’s not top 5 (I think he is) he is right on the cusp.

BJ
Kenny
Diego
Frankie Edgar (is probably ahead of him because he’s fought better competition, but Maynard beat him)

Yeah he is a farm boy from born and raised in Las Vegas, wrestled in High School for St. Edwards in Ohio then MSU. Thats about as close to a farm he has been lol.

by halljam2 on Jul 26, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, just look at him and you can tell.. he’s still a farm boy even if he didn’t grew up there, his personality is that of matt hughes..

Your quite a fan eh Rob!! Know where your coming from tho, he has the personality of a can of tuna.

by Nick J on Jul 26, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wrestled with him in college. He is a quiet reserved guy. Take him down a few times and you see a completely different guy. I definitely see where your coming from though.

yeah, i’m just saying.. it’s more fun when the fight happens if i talk a little trash

soooo’ RoB u would like Maynard a little more if he was better looking? Do feel that way about all the fighters? hmmm..

by DAVE A on Jul 26, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hehe nope, but it would be better for him… I mean i can’t say i don’t like cool guys in sports, personality and looks goes hand in hand he just looks very grey…

Gray beat frankie edgar who i think could beat just about anybody in the light weight division not named kenny florian or bj penn and he beat him miller who has done well i think maynard muscules him around shows some new skills with his stand up and wins the fight by decision i dont see how roger has a chance maynard will pick were the fight goes and thats that
WAR MAYNARD!

Maynard does what he has to, to win. His last 4 fights went to Decisions. i think champs should be finishers. so i hope he doesn’t get a title fight anytime soon until he can prove he can finish fights against decent competition. i met Veres in NJ at the CFFC event when he beat Dwayne Shelton. Veres relied on wrestling, which is sub-par compared to Maynard. i have to admit, his last 3 opponents were good fighters (Miller, Clementi and Edgar) but he took them all down and wore them out on the ground. Lets see him fight Cole Miller or Nate Diaz again.

by Nate on Jul 26, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I recall him standing with Jim Miller a majority of the fight boxing his ears in.

I know a guy who claims to have seen Grey at an event in Canada. XtremeCouture has a gym in Toronto and he thought Grey was a complete monster. Hard to believe that Maynard could cut down to 170lb according to this guy.

Exactly how much bigger is Grey or at all compared to Ol’Roger?

by Big Zino on Jul 26, 2009 1:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He wrestled 157 in college. It has to be a decent cut to get to 156. I bet he walks around at 175.

by halljam2 on Jul 26, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

170? He fights at 155 BigZino.

I met maynard and I go for him every time he fights
Not this time tho

Roger is sick, hope he kos grey

by phenomenal angel on Jul 26, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just great Gray wants to be a Lyoto or a Ken-Flo. He’s just about the most powerful wrestler and GnP at 155 but he never trys to finish and fights reserved. To stick and move and not get hit just isn’t his style. On the main card of big ppvs like UFC 90 but as long as he doesn’t get hit it’s ok to be boring. I’m so sick of this guy already let him get choked out by Diaz again.

Huerta tapped arianny
Awesome role model if u ask me

by phenomenal angel on Jul 26, 2009 5:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m a big fan of Huerta, but this is a bad matchup for him. Any guy that can beat Frankie Edgar as effortlessly as Maynard did, is going to be a huge threat in the lightweight division.

Boar fest would be fantastic!! Have you ever tried it? It’s delicious. Roast with some aromatics like you would in a good ol fashioned southern pig pickin’. Oh, wait….did you mean it would not be interesting?

by chefdaddy on Jul 26, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just made some pork ribs not too long ago in my slow cooker with a cola/brown sugar glaze. Meat fell right off the bone.

by PW on Jul 26, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve heard of brazing them with cola, but haven’t tried it yet…one of those techniques where enough people have done it that you know it works…kinda like “beer can chicken!”

by chefdaddy on Jul 26, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mixed the brown sugar and cola together until it formed a really thick liquid, about the consistency of honey or molasses. And beer butt chicken is awesome! Plop a whole bird down on top of a half a can of beer, season the outside and roast it.
